Alex (Jack Gore), a socially reclusive boy who recently lost his father in a fire, reluctantly attends a summer camp in southern California called "Rim of the World". He meets two other "misfits" - Zhen Zhen (Miya Cech), an initially mute, adorable orphan girl from China (who bribed her way into America to attend camp), and Dariush (Benjamin Flores Jr.), an outspoken boy from a rich family. Logan (Andrew Bachelor) is the leader of Alex's group. Alex can't do the zip line activity due to his fear of heights. One afternoon, while in a lake, Zhen Zhen wanders off into the woods, looking for the lookout point she had seen on a camp poster, while Alex attempts to follow. He comes across Dariush, who happens to be nearby answering the call of nature. Dariush mistakenly tries to 'cure' Alex's fear of heights by making him stand near a cliff edge, and Gabriel (Alessio Scalzotto), a boy they hadn't seen at camp before, intervenes. Zhen Zhen, hearing the commotion, comes back down and meets up with the boys. At that moment, they all receive alarming texts advising they immediately evacuate the area. The 4 see explosions in the upper atmosphere and later realize that those were EMP bursts that knocked out all electronics on Earth. While hurrying back, they find out that other campers have left the lake and they witness alien ships invading the valley. The kids head back to the camp, and afterward discover the camp to be empty of people - all except for Conrad, a camp counselor. Suddenly, a Dragon spacecraft fleeing the International Space Station lands heavily nearby. The dying astronaut inside the spacecraft gives Alex a key, with instructions that it should be taken to NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) facility in Pasadena, and that it was the only way to destroy the aliens. An alien appears with its "dog" and kills the astronaut. Alex and his friends try to hide out and Conrad gets killed, but the kids manage to elude the aliens and escape the camp. JPL is 70 miles away, but ZhenZhen suggests that they don't need to go all the way to Pasadena and that they can hand over the key to a Govt official, who will take it rest of the way. They make their way to the sheriff's office and discover an inmate, Lou (Scott MacArthur), who has been left behind in the cells. Lou claims to have a son waiting for him, so an empathetic Alex decides to release him before the group continues on their way to JPL. Later, the group encounters Marines who are evacuating civilians. The commander gratefully takes the key and puts the children on a bus to safety. However, alien ships attack the vehicle convoy, and the soldiers are killed, whereupon Alex retrieves the key from the dying commander and the group sets out for JPL once more. During the night, after briefly taking refuge in Gabriel's old house, Gabriel explains that he is an escapee from Juvenile detention, where he was placed due to a misunderstanding at his mother's store, in which a customer assumed Gabriel was attempting to steal his change at the cash box, unaware of Gabriel's Dyscalculia. Sometime after, they are attacked by a gang of masked individuals, led by Lou, who reveals himself as a murderous thief and tricked the group into releasing him. He agrees to let the kids go, but only if Alex gives him the key, which Lou thinks he can sell on the black market. Alex refuses and Lou attempts to kill Alex with a knife, but right before Lou attacks him, the alien from the camp appears and attacks them all. Lou and his men are killed, but the kids manage to escape after trapping the alien in a backyard swimming pool. While they are walking in the forest, Dariush and Gabriel fight and Dariush reveals that his father lost their car dealership, meaning he will go to jail, hence the reason why Dariush was placed at camp. Suddenly, they receive on their transmitter an S.O.S. from the doctor at JPL they were instructed to give the key to, encouraging them to move forward with their journey. The kids walk into a mall and change clothes. After that, the group takes a Ford Mustang in the parking lot, which they discover Zhen Zhen is able to drive, to quickly journey the rest of the way to JPL, but they are again attacked by the pursuing alien. They abandon the vehicle while trying to escape the alien and realize that they left the key in the car. Dariush attempts to go alone to get the key, only to be injured by the alien in the process but manages to get away with the key. The group finally make it to the JPL facility, but find that the doctor is dead, and his S.O.S. message was only a result of his blood dripping onto his transmitter. The kids are able to make radio contact with a general at NORAD, who explains that the key holds information that can be used to destroy the alien mothership in orbit via a Cold War defense project named Excalibur. Zhen Zhen goes into the basement to start the emergency generators, where she is attacked by an alien dog, while Alex goes to the roof to realign the communication dish, where he is attacked by the alien. Zhen Zhen manages to lock the dog in the basement and returns to the command room to help Gabriel and the injured Dariush insert the keys that will launch the Excalibur weapon. Zhen Zhen, Dariush, and Gabriel evacuate the JPL building, while Alex lures the alien into an engine test room and kills it with the engine's exhaust. The teens watch from the ground as the alien mothership is blown up in the atmosphere. Alex is reunited with his mother and the children are celebrated as heroes.

Jodi Kreyman is a 16-year-old who has been tall for her age since she was three, which has made her insecure her whole life. Jodi (Ava Michelle) is 6 feet 1 inches (1.85 meters) and students regularly joke about her height by asking her "How is the Weather up there". She was always the tallest student in her class, and now wears men's size 13 Nikes. People ignore her intellect and knowledge and focus on how tall she is, ignoring all other aspects of her personality. Guys would talk to her while she is sitting, and be interested in her, but would walk off as soon as they realized how tall she is. Ever since childhood she received criticism from her friends who saw her as an outcast. Her parents Richie (Steve Zahn) and Helaine (Angela Kinsey) are concerned for her and her dad has this weird belief that Jodi will keep growing till her organs explode. He even consults a doctor to give her hormones to stop her growth but stops when he learns that hormone therapy could lead to infertility. Harper (Sabrina Carpenter) is Jodi's hot sister and has been winning pageants since she was a kid. Harper is of short height and has won multiple beauty pageants. Harper is preparing for the Miss Teen Louisiana pageant and does not have a talent to showcase for the same. Fareeda (Anjelika Washington) is Jodi's best friend at school and stands up for her when she is bullied. Only Jack Dunkleman (Griffin Gluck) (who has a long-time crush on Jodi), a short boy who carries books in milk crate instead of a bag, admires her. However, Jodi believes she can only be with someone as tall as her. Her dream comes true when Stig (Luke Eisner), a tall Swedish exchange student, comes into her life and joins her class for the year. Stig is drop dead gorgeous and also smart and intelligent. Dunkleman is distressed to learn that Stig will be staying at his house as the host family. Jack argues that even if Jodi and Stig fall in love, get married and have a baby, that baby is likely to be a giant and would have to be taken out in a Cesarean section. That means Jodi would have to live with a scar for the rest of her life. However, every girl at school wants to win Stig over. Jodi is constantly reminded of her ugly height by classmate Kimmy (Clara Wilsey). Kimmy is a selfish and pretty girl who is the most popular girl at school and is Jodi's rival. Kimmy is a travel enthusiast and is destined to become a travel agent in the future. Kimmy befriends Stig and practically spends every waking minute with him. She even speaks a little Swedish. Jodi takes help from her older sister Harper Kreyman in order to impress Stig. Jodi needs help getting Stig to notice her, so Harper and their mother give her a complete makeover. Harper tells Jodi that going after an exchange student is a full-on war and she would have to be willing to go "all the way". Harper does think Jodi is capable of that. Meanwhile Jake tells Stig that with him around, Jake just looks like a dork. Stig reveals that back in Sweden he is the dork, and nobody wanted to be friends with him. Jake tells him that he is the most popular guy at the high school now. He could have anybody he wants. Kimmy and another bully, Schnipper (Rico Paris), prank call Jodi, pretending to be Stig and asking her to homecoming. Jodi is embarrassed when Kimmy reveals the truth to her. Kimmy says that Jodi is the Tall Girl and will never be the pretty girl. To her best friend Fareeda's frustration, Jodi hides in the bathroom to avoid Kimmy. Jodi takes the courage to come out in the hall, but then sees Kimmy and darts into the music room. Stumbling across Stig playing the piano, he encourages her to join him, and they sing the duet "I've Never Been in Love Before" from the musical Guys and Dolls. Jodi finds her father has organized a tall people club meeting in their house, which she finds upsetting. Jodi complains that every time her father tries to make her feel normal, he makes her feel even more like a freak. She turns up to Dunkleman's house, and Jake becomes jealous when he realizes she is there to see Stig. He continually interrupts their evening. Stig kisses Jodi on the subway ride home. Later, feeling guilty, Stig asks Dunkleman for advice, and he tells him to focus on being with Kimmy. Jodi gets angry at Dunkleman when she learns this. Meanwhile, another girl, Liz (Paris Berelc), asks Dunkleman on a date. Schnipper is now interested in Jodi, so he gets Kimmy to ask her to join them for an escape room activity. Jodi ditches a concert with Fareeda to go. In the escape room, they kiss in couples: Jodi and Schnipper, Kimmy and Stig, and Dunkleman and Liz, until Jodi gets frustrated and leaves. Jealous, Stig talks to Jodi and agrees to go on a date to Harper's pageant competition. Harper wins, but Stig does not turn up. At Dunkleman's party, Stig explains that he lost track of time. Dunkleman rejects Liz when she asks him to the homecoming dance. He gives Jodi platform heels to apologize for being a bad friend. Jodi is sent a video from after she left the party. Stig pretended that Jodi had an unrequited love for him and says he stood her up. Schnipper joined the conversation, and a fistfight ensued, leaving Dunkleman with a black eye. At the homecoming dance, Kimmy and Stig are crowned Homecoming Queen and King, but he breaks up with her. Jodi arrives in the high heels Dunkleman gave her and makes a speech expressing newfound confidence in herself. Stig asks Jodi out, but she rejects him. She talks to Dunkleman: he finally reveals why he always carries a milk crate: he stands on it and leans in to kiss her.

Twelve-year-old Cole Johnson is bullied by his neighbor Jeremy, but his babysitter Bee stands up for him and scares Jeremy off. The following day, when his parents go out for an overnight stay at a hotel, Bee and Cole spend quality time together until he has to go to bed. Cole is encouraged by a text from his neighbor and best friend Melanie to go see what Bee gets up to after he goes to sleep. To his surprise, he sees what looks like Bee and several of her high school friends: Max, John, Allison, Sonya, and Samuel. They are playing a game of truth or dare formatted as a game of spin the bottle. However, as Bee kisses Samuel on a dare, she pulls two daggers from behind her back and stabs him in the skull. The others collect Samuel's blood, revealing themselves to be members of a demonic cult. Cole hurries to his room where he calls 911, puts on his shoes, and finds a pocket knife. He pretends to be asleep as Bee and the cult members enter his room to draw a blood sample. After they leave, he tries to escape out the window but Bee stays in the room, and Cole passes out from the exhaustion. Bee and her cult question Cole, while fending off his questions by saying it was a science project. When the cops arrive, Max kills one with a poker, but the cop accidentally shoots Allison in her breast, whereas Bee and Max kill the other cop. Bee forces Cole to give them the police code to call off the other cops. While Allison complains about being shot, Cole rushes up the stairs; John pursues him, but is pushed over the banister, landing on a trophy that impales his neck. Cole escapes out his bedroom window and hides in the crawlspace under his house. Although Sonya finds him, he traps her in the basement and then ignites a firework rocket and bug spray to blow her up. After showing appreciation for Cole's ingenuity, Max chases Cole up the old tree house; he is killed when he falls and is hanged by the rope swing. Cole escapes to Melanie's house, but Bee follows him. While hiding in a room, Cole apologizes to Melanie for dragging her into this situation and assures her that he is going to take care of things. He asks Melanie to call the police, then she kisses Cole before he leaves. Cole returns to his house to find Allison, who tries to kill Cole with a kitchen knife; she is instead shot in the head with a shotgun by Bee. Bee explains to Cole that when she was young, she made a deal with The Devil to get whatever she wanted by sacrificing innocent people and spilling their blood on the ancient book while reciting its verses. Although she wants him to join her cause, Cole refuses and burns the spell book. He rushes to Melanie's house to take her dad's car, and drives it straight towards his house while Bee fixes the book in the living room. After crashing into her, they have one last emotional farewell before Cole climbs out of the wreckage. As the police and emergency crew arrive, Cole tells his parents that he no longer needs a babysitter. Later, a firefighter going through Cole's house is attacked by Bee.
