A poor rickshaw-puller adopts an abandoned child and brings him up as his son but tragedy strikes when the boy becomes crippled as a result of polio infection. Mahesh is a poor rickshaw puller. One day, he goes to temple and sees a child lying on the stairs. He takes him inside the temple to give him to his parents but the priest assuming that the child is his sin, asks him to get out of the temple. Police constable also helps the priest and asks Mahesh to take his child along-with him. Mahesh tells them that it is not his child but they do not listen. Then Mahesh tries to leave the child but fate lets him take the child home. There also, he faces opposition from the neighborhood due to the child but irrespective of their behavior, Mahesh starts bringing up the child and names him 'Hindustan'. On the other hand, Radha, the child's mother attempts suicide because the child's father, Vinod, refuses to marry her. So, unable to bear the burden of sin, she tries to commit suicide but is saved by the local people. When she comes into conscious, she starts searching her child. She goes to police and also requests Vinod but Vinod rejects her cruelly. Vinod gets injured in an accident and is ashamed of his behavior. He apologizes to Radha and both of them get married. They along-with Inspector Ramesh start finding their child. In bringing up the child, Sheela, helps Mahesh. One day Mahesh comes to know that Hindustan has got infected with polio. He, feeling responsible for Hindustan's disease because of his uncleanliness, works hard to give the child a good education. An idealistic young man fights against the exploitation of the poor by the rich. He had been at the receiving end of their exploitation when a book actually written by him was credited to a rich man. Anoop (Dharmendra) is a struggling writer. One day he meets with wealthy and beautiful Seema (Hema Malini) and both fall in love. When Seema's brother Rajan Choudhury (Pran) finds out, he is angered and forbids Seema to see Anoop again. On the other hand Anoop's sister, Rekha (Aruna Irani), and Rajan's brother-in-law Mahesh (Mehmood) have also fallen in love with each other. This angers Rajan even more and he turns Mahesh out of his house. Rajan finds out that Anoop has authored a book called "Naya Zamana", and decides to publish it and sell it under his name. Anoop and Seema find out when the book hits the stalls and is a big hit. Rajan is unapologetic. Rajan then tries to evict the poor people living in small tenements with Anoop and his mother (Lalita Pawar), but Anoop and Seema intervene, and as a result Rajan orders the tenements to be burnt secretly by his henchman Sitaram (Jankidas). Anoop is blamed for the destruction and arrested by the police. Seema's dad, Sachin Choudhury (Ashok Kumar) forbids Seema to see Anoop anymore as well as stay away from the poor people's lives. In order to get medical treatment for his sister, a brother faces challenges when he is hired to subdue three out-of-control heiresses. Ashok is unable to find employment and is in desperate need of Rs.15000/- to cure his blind sister, Roopa. He then finds employment with wealthy Sarojini Devi who asks him to subdue her out-of-control grand-daughters, Asha, Manju and Anju. He sets about to do so with considerable success but in the process falls in love with Asha. This does not auger well with Sarojini, who fires him, and sets about to get Asha married to London-based Pran. Ashok returns home and finds Roopa missing. Shortly thereafter he finds evidence that she may have killed herself. Gayatridevi wants her son Ashok to marry Sarita, whom she has chosen for him. However, Ashok is in love with Asha. Things take a turn when Ashok loses his eyesight in an accident. Gayetridevi sends her son, Ashok to get her grandson from Japan. Gayetridevi had an elder son, who married a girl of Japanese origin without her blessings. She wants Ashok to get married to Sarita, but Ashok does not show any interest in Sarita. In Japan, Ashok meets with Asha and both fall in love. Asha's uncle wants Asha to marry Pran, but Asha does not like Pran and runs away with Ashok. Pran runs down Ashok with his car, and Ashok is hospitalized and may lose his eye-sight. On the lookout for employment, Ashok (Joy Mukherji) sees the photographs of beautiful Asha (Asha Parekh), and decides to accept employment as the estate's Manager. His expectations are shortlived as Asha turns out to be a rich, spoiled, conceited bratty young lady. To complicate matters further, Seema (Nazima), Asha's sister is attracted to Ashok. Ashok and Asha do like and eventually end up in love with each other, but Ashok's dad (Ulhas) does not approve to their marriage as he knows of Asha's parentage, a father who is an escaped convict, in jail for murder, and a mother whose profession was: prostition. A wealthy woman chooses her own mate and refuses to marry the man chosen by her deceased father. Bombay-based Meena lives a wealthy lifestyle along with her Chacha and Chachi in a mansion. When asked to marry, she places an advertisement in the local newspaper, and after interviewing many males, chooses Manohar to be her future husband. She shares this news as well as introduces him to her family - who disapprove and remind her that her late father had selected a groom named Sunder even before she was born. She scoffs at this and announces that she will marry Manohar soon. Then Sunder, who was living at an ashram for Brahmacharis, shows up at her home - complete with beard and traditional clothing - and is all set to get married to her. When facing rejection, he decides to change his lifestyle and be like Manohar - and does so - albeit with hilarious results.
