He follows her. He finds out that she has a secret male lover. When he confronts her, an argument ensues, and Avinash drinks himself to sleep. The next morning he is woken up by Police Inspector Vishnu Patnaik, arrested and charged with killing Sanjana. On being questioned, Avinash admits that they did have an argument, but he does not remember anything thereafter as he had too much alcohol. Avinash's advocate friend, Rohit, does not think that he is a killer and is on the verge of proving it in court, when a man claiming to be Sanjana's maternal uncle, Chamanlal, gives evidence that he had seen Sanjana being killed at the hands of her husband, and that her body is buried in the backyard. The police locate the body, identify it as that of Sanjana, and the court sentences Avinash with the death penalty. While being transported to jail, Avinash manages to escape in order to try and find out who killed his wife, and who framed him. Avinash then consume an unreasonable amount of alcohol which leads him into a deep sleep. The next morning Avinash finds himself handcuffed for the murder of Sanjana. The case is called up in court with Avinash's close friend Rohit as his defense lawyer who also gives him the assurance not to worry. Rohit is on the vogue of winning the case when a man named Chamanlal enters claiming that he is Sanjana's maternal uncle and providing evidence which leads the court to a rotten half decompose dead body. Alysia is a singer, and has come to Switzerland under a contract in order to do a show with Sam Hams. Her friend Shilpa accompanies her. However the people who Alysia and Shilpa have come to Switzerland with, are drug smugglers. Shilpa is murdered when she finds this out, and Alysia pretends she knows nothing. She meets up with Adit, and together they help each other. Joint Commissioner of Police Dev Pratap Singh (Amitabh Bachchan), a duty-bound, self-righteous officer (He has just killed a minority community student leader as he was conducting unlawful activities on campus), and Special Commissioner Tejinder Khosla (Om Puri), the balancing force between the political interests of Chief Minister Bhandarker (Amrish Puri) and Dev's commitment to the law, are lifelong friends, each with his own ideals. Tej believes in using excessive force for control, while Dev believes in upholding the rule of law. Tej reminds Dev that his own 8 yrs old son Armaan was killed by the bullet of a Muslim terrorist.. Dr. Bharati Singh (Rati Agnihotri) is Dev's wife. Farhaan (Fardeen Khan), a law graduate, was brought up with ideals of non-violence and patriotism. On a train bound for Bombay from Surat, a Police Inspector questions Farhaan, who has just obtained his law degree, for his reason to go to Bombay, and whether he has any alliance with Pakistanis. Farhaan answers that he is going to Bombay to live with his father, and he does not know anyone from Pakistan. Farhaan finds out that Bombay Police have been targeting the Muslim community, and in the name of fighting terrorism, have been killing innocent Muslim men, women and children. Dev has had a meeting with Muslim community leaders asking them to share list of all people attending their madrasas, their funding and any suspicious activities. corrupt politician Latif (Ehsan Khan) is angry with this biased attitude from Dev, but moderate leader Ali Khan (Pramod Moutho) wants to cooperate with the government. Ali is Farhaan's dad. Farhaan comes to know from Ali that Joint Commissioner of Police, Dev Pratap Singh, is involved in this witch-hunt. Dev orders the encounter of Kareem Khan of Latif's party involved in smuggling of arms. Kareem tries to hide behind his family and as a result, the family is also killed. The community is outraged and launches peaceful demonstrations (egged on by Latif). Latif publicly asks Ali to lead the Morcha. Latif's men start throwing stones & petrol bombs at the police during the Morcha, prompting Dev to open fire. As a result, Ali is killed. Latif meets CM's right hand man MangalRao (Milind Gunaji) and conveys that he helped the CM get elected in exchange for a promise of a MLA ticket. He reminds Mangal Rao for the CM to keep his promise. Meanwhile Farhaan meets Latif and says he wants to kill Dev. Farhaan is provided training in handling guns, and is subsequently made ready for this task. Aaliya (Kareena Kapoor) is the light in Farhaan's life. Beautiful and innocent, the young woman also gets caught in extraordinary circumstances that transform her life and she dares to stand up for the truth. Unfortunately, Farhaan is unable to kill Dev, who escapes unhurt. But one of Farhaan's assistant is killed and is identified to be Latif's man. Chief Minister Bhandarkar views this incident seriously, and instructs Tej to root out terrorist elements in the city. Tej raids Latif's hideouts and manages to capture Farhaan. Farhaan is eventually released as there is no evidence against him. Dev tries to counsel Farhaan that Latif is using him for political purposes. Tej is an ultra Hindu Nationalist, while Dev is a secularist in his views. Dev sees Armaan in Farhaan. Latif is alarmed by Farhaan's release as this was unexpected. He plans to divert their attention by conducting a bomb blast in the city and stoking communal tensions. Latif chooses Farhaan for the job as he does not intend for Farhaan to escape alive. Farhaan is told to deliver a package to a man near a Hindu temple, and he does so. While at a stop to buy some snacks, the package explodes prematurely, killing several people, but Farhaan survives. Since this incident occurred near a Hindu temple, a right-wing political party member, Mangal Rao, organizes a wave of riots against the Muslim community. Riots take place, and CM instructs Tej to observe and not prevent the violence. As a result, hundreds are killed. Latif organizes his men to target and attack Hindus and Hindu establishments, rendering the region unsafe, with people being killed in the name of religion. Dev is at the location, but is under orders from Tej not to act. After waiting, Dev decides to ignore his orders and bring the situation under control. Aaliya escapes sexual assault and Farhaan finds her and takes her to a hospital where Bharati treats her. When Hindus and Muslims have had enough, they publicly ask for peace, it is only then Latif and Mangal Rao agree on a truce, on the condition that no Muslim male, female or child will file a FIR (First Information Report) in any police station, to which Latif agrees. Latif then warns everyone in the Muslim community not to complain against anyone. Period. But Latif frames it as saying that Muslims cannot hope to get Justice from this govt and hence there is no point begging for it. But Aaliya breaks rank and complains to Dev publicly about his police officers and Mangal Rao, whom she had witnessed during the riots. Seeing Aaliya, many witnesses come forward. Mangal Rao is arrested by Dev. CM and Tej want Dev to release Mangal Rao, but he refuses. Latif summons Farhaan and beats him senseless and wants to kill him, but Farhaan escapes. It is then Farhaan finds out that he has been treated as a pawn by Latif, and decides to trust Dev and become an informer. Tej releases Mangal Rao and he plans to kill Aaliya. Tej knows this & stops Dev from helping the victims as Mangal Rao sets fire to the entire colony where Aaliya lived (Aaliya had secretly moved in with Bharati, without Tej or Dev's knowledge). Dev writes a formal complaint against Tej and this leads to a departmental inquiry. As Dev heads to court, he is shot down by unknown assailants on the steps of the court, and it is clear that Tej instigated the shoot-out. Tej tries to use the chaos to shoot Farhaan, but Dev saves him before dying. Tej is riddled with guilt on Dev's death and understands that Dev treated Farhaan like his own son. Tej kills himself and hands over all the evidence to Frahaan so that he can fight the battle in court.

After completing his studies in London, Shakti Thakur returns to his ancestral village in India, accompanied by his girlfriend, Anita, whom he is in love with and wants to marry, much to the disapproval of his family. Shakti harbors ambitions of opening a chain of fast-food restaurants, a vision that contrasts sharply with his family's traditional values and expectations. Back in the village, Shakti quickly becomes disillusioned by the stagnant atmosphere and the deep-rooted animosity that still plagues the townspeople. He informs his father, the zamindar Raja Thakur, that he intends to sell his share of the family's property to fund his business venture. Raja Thakur, who raised Shakti as a single parent after his mother died when Shakti was just a year old, pleads with his son to stay in the village and use his education for the betterment of the community. He emphasizes that "a man gets an education not to become a selfish being but to uplift his uneducated brothers and society." However, Shakti, frustrated by the ongoing feud between his father and his uncle, Zamindar Birju, and the behavior of his older brother, a perpetual drunk and an embarrassment to the family, decides to leave. The village is deeply affected by the longstanding feud between Raja Thakur and his younger brother Birju, a disabled man whose son, Bali Thakur, holds a deep grudge against Raja Thakur. This rivalry, fueled by Bali Thakur's desire to one-up his uncle, keeps the village divided and stifles its progress. While spending time in the village, Shakti engages in a game of sticks (a traditional Indian sport) with Bali Thakur's men, which he wins, further aggravating the tension between the two factions. During a visit to an old temple that had been closed off due to a longstanding dispute between Raja Thakur and Birju Thakur over who had rights to it, Shakti insists on entering, and his friend and servant Sukhiya breaks open the lock. Bali Thakur hears of this and incites a brutal riot between the two village factions. Raja Thakur, desperate to prevent further bloodshed, considers apologizing, but Shakti insists that he or Sukhiya should apologize instead. However, when Shakti looks for Sukhiya, he learns that Bali Thakur's men have cut off Sukhiya's hand as punishment for opening the temple, leading Raja Thakur's men to retaliate by burning down the homes of Bali Thakur's supporters. Frustrated by the lack of justice after Sukhiya's arm is cut off, Shakti confronts the head police officer about why they are not taking action. The officer explains that the villagers refuse to come forward as witnesses to such violent acts, making it difficult for the police to intervene. Despite this setback, the police officer becomes supportive of Shakti. To prevent the situation from escalating further, Shakti enlists the help of a government official friend to legally open the temple for all, with his father's reluctant approval. Offended by this move, Bali Thakur retaliates by hiring goons to destroy a dam that protects Raja Thakur's side of the village. A female villager notices the goons near the dam but does not think much of it at the time. The dam is subsequently destroyed with explosives, leading to a devastating flood that kills many villagers, including infants, leaving Shakti deeply grieved The same female villager, whose son died in the flood, angrily recognizes one of the goons in the village. She confronts him, leading Shakti to capture the goon and hand him over to the police. However, the goon, out of fear for his family's safety, refuses to implicate Bali Thakur in the crime. Later, Bali Thakur intimidates Narayan, a villager living in Raja Thakur's area, into closing off a portion of his land, making it difficult for the public to reach the main road. This action was done at the suggestion of Bali's lawyer, further complicating the ongoing conflict. In a village panchayat called to resolve the issue, accusations fly from both sides. Without any evidence, Bali Thakur accuses Raja Thakur of orchestrating attacks on his brother's family and insults him relentlessly. Disrespected and heartbroken, Raja Thakur returns home and dies from a heart attack that night. During the funeral, Birju Thakur grieves the death of his brother, while Bali Thakur reacts with cold indifference and annoyance. Shakti, now burdened with the role of the village head, reluctantly takes on his father's duties. After becoming the village head, Shakti makes his older brother swear to stop drinking, and his brother agrees. However, Bali Thakur's men, under the influence of Bali's lawyer, try to get Shakti's brother drunk again to manipulate him into signing away the village's property deed, but Shakti intervenes just in time to prevent the betrayal. As time passes, the villagers express concerns about the land that has been closed off, leading to longer travel times. Shakti successfully convinces Narayan to open the land by arranging a marriage between Narayan's daughter, Gehna, and a well-to-do man from the village and the police agree to provide protection to stop Bali men interfering. However, on the wedding day, the groom flees in fear of Bali Thakur. Distraught and feeling dishonored, Narayan believes his daughter will be stigmatized and live in constant fear. Shakti steps in and marries Gehna himself, despite still having feelings for Anita. Although their marriage begins awkwardly, Shakti and Gehna gradually move on. When Anita returns and learns the truth, she is left heartbroken. Although saddened by the turn of events, she understands the situation and leaves. Shakti, too, closes the chapter about his girlfriend and starts his new life with his wife Bali Thakur, enraged by the series of events-including the opening of the land, Shakti stopping him from tricking his older brother into signing over the family land, and the village panchayat's decision to honor Shakti's family with the right to host the village festival for reopening the temple-plots a final act of vengeance. Despite Shakti's kind offer to let Bali oversee the festival, Bali refuses, threatening to cut off Shakti's head, further escalating tensions. Bali then devises a plan to plant a bomb at the festival, determined to exact revenge. Bali's parents, Birju and his mother, become aware of his plot and, horrified, try to stop him. They attempt to call the police, but Bali, in his blind rage, imprisons them. Birju pleads with his son to end the violence, but his pleas fall on deaf ears. Bali's mother manages to escape and runs to the festival to warn Shakti of the bomb, but she arrives too late, and the bomb explodes, resulting in multiple deaths. In the aftermath of the explosion, a furious Shakti searches for Bali at his home. He finds a devastated and remorseful Birju, who does not know where Bali is hiding but Birju does not know, Shakti decides to help Birju and his innocent family by bringing them to his home, however both factions of the village, wanting revenge, go after Bali Thakur and his family. Shakti protects the innocent family and convinces the villagers to leave. Appreciative of Shakti's efforts to protect them, Birju Thakur finally ends his enmity towards him. Meanwhile, the police launch a manhunt for Bali in connection with the bombing. The next day, Shakti notices Bali's mother walking into the chicken coop area on his property and realizes that Bali is hiding there. Shakti follows her and confronts Bali, who is hiding inside. Bali's mother begs him to flee and escape the consequences of his actions, but Bali, consumed by his hatred for Shakti, refuses. When his mother tries to stop him from attacking Shakti, Bali spits in her face and kicks her in the stomach. Enraged by this, Shakti attacks and overpowers Bali, but ultimately spares his life, urging him to surrender to the police. However, Bali refuses to give up his vendetta and tries to attack Shakti again. He flees to an area filled with statues and idols, where the two engage in a final, intense battle with weapons. In the struggle, Shakti decapitates Bali with an axe, an act that leaves him devastated as he realizes that Bali has forced him to unleash his dark side. Although other villagers are willing to take the blame for Bali Thakur's murder, Shakti gives himself up to the police to end the cycle of violence once and for all. The film depicts the true meaning of education as "a tool to uplift uneducated people".

A police inspector is infatuated with the wife of a doctor and tries to break them apart by hook or crook. Dr. Rohan Verma and his wife Suman; a teacher by profession are settled and lives a happy, wealthy life-style. They will find that their lives are not the same anymore when they befriend a helpful police inspector Indrajeet Saxena who comes to their aid on several occasions. Indrajeet confides that he is romantically attracted to Suman and started to behave in a way that upturn the couple's life. Within a few days of their taking up residence, their home is broken into, and a physical confrontation ensues, with the thief escaping. The police are summoned, and take a report. The attending Police Inspector, Indrajeet Saxena (Milind Gunaji) is very helpful, and the Vermas get very friendly, and often get together. Inspector Saxena also comes to the assistance of Suman, when she is wrongly charged with possession of drugs. But Inspector Indrajeet's friendiliness starts showing it's true colours when he reveals that he is physically attracted to Suman.
