Cheenu is loved by all while Shiva is the black sheep. During a family function, an estranged relative returns with her daughter. Confusion leads to a love triangle between Cheenu, Shiva and the girl.

The film starts off by showing Chithambaram (Prakash Raj), and how he's an important man in the village. He is an adamant character who always sticks on to his decisions. When the temple festival starts, Kausalya (Priyanka Trivedi) goes to her grandfather's house to celebrate. There she meets Suresh (Vikram), and they fall in love. Meanwhile, Chithambaram gets into many conflicts with Suresh, not even knowing who the other was. All the things that Suresh did were unintentional, but Chithambaram doesn't realize this. Therefore, Chithambaram ends up with a very negative opinion of Suresh. One day, everyone in Kausalya's grandfather's home find out that Suresh and Kausalya are in love by seeing Suresh pressing Kausalya's sweating navel, thereby tasting her lips, and she is unable to stop him as she has applied mehandi on her hands. On seeing this they try to get Chithambaram (Kausalya's father) to agree to the wedding. He, however stubbornly sticks to his decision that the marriage should not take place. Finally, Suresh asks him what would make him happy. Chithambaram says that he would be happy if Suresh dies. Realizing arguing further would be futile, Suresh decides to go back to Madras. Meanwhile, while Kausalya washes her clothes, Ilavarasu gets attracted towards her physique, and she is being molested by him. She somehow manages to escape and reports it to her father, but she feels she is insecure and needs a companion. Kausalya tries to join him at the railway station to go with him, but Suresh refuses saying "If I marry you, it will be with your father's permission and acceptance," so at that time Chithambaram had arrived at the station to prevent his daughter from eloping with Suresh to Madras. He hears this conversation and now after this incident Chithambaram realizes how good Suresh is so finally decides to accept Suresh as his daughter's love, and fiancé. Suresh, seeing that Chithambaram is no longer withholding consent for their match, also agrees.

On a business trip to Switzerland, Vijay meets Meenu and decides to get married to her. Meenu's brother Nagaraj asks Vijay to leave India and get settled in Switzerland with his family.

When Ratnapuri's king passes away without naming a successor, the imperial council of the kingdom unanimously vote for Marthandan to be their next ruler. A story of two rival kings, (R. Balasubramaniam, T.E. Krishnamachari); Sivaji Ganesan is the son of the latter. Krishnamachari is under the influence of an ambitious spiritual guru (Nambiar) who manipulates the king for his own ends. The prince works hard to prevent him from achieving his designs. He moves around the kingdom incognito fighting for people's rights. During this time he meets and falls in love with a dancer (Padmini). The rival king's daughter Lalitha is also in love with him. The wily advisor (Veerappa) of the other king tries to work out things in his favor and marry the dancer. After many twists and turns, the villains are exposed and the princess sacrifices her love in favor of the dancer.

Vadivambal's mother Anjalai and her husband Namachivaayam Pillai force Vadivambal to marry Masilamani. One day Vadivambal is visited by her maternal grandmother, she came to know from her grandfather that he is staying in Mannnargudi Velayudham Pillai's house and Vadivambal's mother is not married. She decides to leave their house to Mannargudi to meet her maternal grandfather. Meanwhile, Digambara Samiyar (M. N. Nambiar)m who has renounced his life, is advised by a female monk to save people from crooked Sattanathan Pillai. One night Digambara Samiyar passes by Alangaram house and overhears the judge and Alangaram discuss their cruel intentions. On his way Vadivambal is attacked by robbers. Digambara Samiyar passes by and saves her and gets to know about Vadivambal's forceful wedding arrangement with Sattanathan's brother Masilamani. While they reach Mannargudi, they are attacked by Masilamani and Namachivaayam Pillai. However, Kannapa passes by and rescues Vadivambal and Digambara Samiyar. Both Kannapa (P. V. Narasimha Bharathi) and Vadivambal fall in love at first sight. Velayudha Pillai and Kannapa greet Digambara Samiyar into their house. Velayudha Pillai had once worked in Sattanathan Pillai. Once Velayudha Pillai's pregnant wife was ill with cholera. Sattanathan Pillai chased out Velayudha Pillai. Velayudha Pillai was helped by Chokka Lingam Pillai. Sattanthan Pillai cheated Chokka Linga Pillai and tried to rape Chokkalingam Pillai's wife. She was saved by Velayudha Pillai. Digambara Samiyar visits Sundaram Pillai and hears about his wife's status. Sundaram Pillai says that his 3-year-old daughter was kidnapped 15 years ago. His wife gets upset and visits a saint to know the whereabouts of their daughter. The good man tells Sundaram Pillai's wife that she will not return until she is married. While Sundaram Pillai and Alangaram decide to leave, Sundaram questions his wife's presence. Alangaram and Sattanathan Pillai accused Sundaram Pillai's wife of having an affair with the saint, which makes Sundaram Pillai reject his wife and leave. The lawyer is at cutting corners, and a person in saintly robes known as Digambara Saamiyar (M. N. Nambiar) is out to expose him. He appears in various disguises and succeeds in his attempt after the story has several twists and turns. The novel is based on a theory that if a man is made to stay awake without sleep for 3 to 4 days, he will be in a mood to confess everything hidden in his mind. This theory has been used to great effect in the film; to keep the lawyer awake, a song-and-dance sequence featuring Kumari Kamala is introduced.
