Premi is a bachelor who has re-located from distant Uttar Pradesh to Bombay, and makes a living selling poems to a wealthy man by the name of Benni. While visiting Goddess Durga Devi's temple, he sees an attractive young woman and instantly falls in love with her. Subsequently he finds out that she is a courtesan named Laila-Jaan. When he does venture into the dance hall, he finds out that she is singing his very poem that he had penned for Benni, and then he witnesses Benni himself as one of her clientèle. He gets himself hired by Laila-Jaan just to be close to her. He finds out that she is contemptuous of married women and regards herself much more superior than them. When the Thakur of Rajgarh invites her to sing and dance at his son's wedding, she goes there to perform. It is here she will find out that the ordinary women, she loathes, have nothing but hatred for her and her kind. Confused and surprised, she wants to give up her life as a courtesan. It is that night that she gets abducted. In the morning the Thakur finds out that she is missing, and also missing is Premi. After committing a murder on the train, he is sentenced to jail. His new bride finds a job and gives birth to her son Gopi. It is when Gopi is a school going boy, a few years later that things come to a head. Ram's wife has been unable to conceive. A comic interlude occurs when a neighbour's wife Sundari gets pregnant. Ram and his wife contract for her to be a surrogate mother and hand over the child to Ram. Sundari agrees to carry the baby to term and hand it over to Ram and his wife. She herself has 6 sons named after each of the days of the week; one more child would be one too many. Kaamesh Singh, on his release from prison, turns his sister-in-law against his wife, by implying that his wife is having an affair with her husband. Ram's wife is so angry about his infidelity and swears vengeance against her sister. This sets the stage for the killing of Kaamesh Singh. How will this love triangle be resolved?

Shyam Sunder lives a wealthy lifestyle in a small village in India along with his widowed step-mother, Nirmala. He has taken to alcohol, and womanizing, goes away very often without informing anyone, and frequently asks Nirmala for money. One day Lucky informs Nirmala that he has seen Shyam's dead body. She summons the Police, who arrive but find the dead carcass of a bear, and eventually decide that Shyam may have gone to Goa without informing Nirmala. Subsequently a young man named Prakash, who claims he is the son of Lucknow-based Tehsildar Somshekhar, arrives there, meets with Nirmala, informs her that he is Shyam's friend and business partner, and a author by profession. She permits him to live in her spacious house, but subsequently asks him to move to the guest house. Prakash meets and falls in love with Roopa, who lives a middle-class lifestyle with her widowed mother, Radha, and servant, Gopal. Soon Roopa also falls in love with him and introduces him to her mom, who approves of him. Prakash will soon find out that all is not well when he comes across a framed photograph of Roopa in the company of a young man, and yet another photograph with the same man, as well as a child in Roopa's arms. Then he is told about an abandoned house that has a ghastly secret. Prakash must now find out who the man in the photograph is, whether Roopa is a mother of the child in the photograph as well as the secret of the abandoned house, and the reason why Shyam is still missing. Chandru lives in a palatial house with his dad, Ram Kumar; mom Sita; elder brother Shyam and his wife. Chandru is in love with Geeta Sinha, the only daughter of wealthy Dr. Sinha, and would like to marry her. Geeta, too is in love with Chandru and introduces him to her dad. Dr. Sinha has no objections, the young couple are then formally engaged and a wedding date is set. The wedding preparations take place in both the households, and soon the big day arrives. Before the marriage could be formalized, Dr. Sinha asks Ram that he has heard that Chandru is not the son of Sita but of a prostitute named Radha. This shocks everyone present, and it looks like Ram has a lot of explaining to do in order to get his son married or else live with this stigma for the rest of his life.

An abused homeless male and a mentally-challenged woman become friends. Impoverished residents of a Chawl ill-treat a homeless collegian orphan, Bhola, make him do a lot of work, run errands, do not pay him, make him beg for food, and often refuse to feed him. After Gauri's marriage is canceled due to her being institutionalized for 10 years in a mental hospital in Agra, her mother, Leela, secretly decides to marry her off to Bhola. As both are shunned by everyone they become friends but then Bhola is blamed for stealing valuables, accused and beaten for writing a love-letter to Renu, and is beaten even more before his exams. Then things dramatically change after Bhola graduates, and a wealthy businessman from Singapore arrives and announces that he is Bhola's father. Gopal does manages to find a lead in this case and work together with the help of Amarnath's sister, Kamla in locating some incriminating photographs that clearly shows a car registration number. He meets and fall in love with Sunita who then introduces him to her dad, Damodar. Gopal and Seema are two small children who live in a small town in India. Balraj (Dharmendra), affectionately called Raj, by his elder brother (Nana Palsikar) and sister Vija (Madhumati), is a student in college in the arts semester. As the family is not very rich, Raj decides to move from the hostel to the residence of a family. He finds one such family in Gandhinagar, which consists of Choudhury Hukumat Rai (Ashok Kumar), a lawyer by profession, his wife (Nimmi), and only daughter Shanti (Mala Sinha). Hukumat takes an instant liking to Raj, and tells him that his wife will only allow him to take up residence if he tells her that he is already married. Raj reluctantly does so, and thus acquires residence with the Rai family. Eventually Mrs. Rai takes a liking to Raj, so does Shanti. Shanti finds out Raj and her dad had lied to the family about Raj's marital status, she confronts Raj, and he readily admits that he lied. Both fall in love. Mr. and Mrs. Rai are thrilled, when they come to know that Raj and Shanti are in love, and excitedly plan their marriage. As Raj's brother is critically ill, Raj has to return to his village. After several days when Raj returns to the Rai family, he refuses to marry Shanti on the ground that he is going to marry Gauri (Sandhya Roy). The Rai family is devastated. Gayatri, daughter of a poor labourer, falls in love with a rich businessman. But the relationship sours and she is left pregnant with his baby. She keeps the identity of the father a secret. Narayan works as a laborer on the farmland owned by businessman, Ratan Kumar, in Ramnagar, who also has a rubber estate in Singapore. Although Narayan was an ex-convict, Ratan had assisted him getting a job, some land, and a small house where he now lives with his grown daughter, Gayetri, who used to work as a tutor/teacher. While bringing him his lunch one afternoon, Gayetri faints, and a woman tells him that she is pregnant. A shocked Narayan tries to find out who the father is, but Gayetri refuses to answer. He is all ready to beat the truth out, when Ratan intervenes, asks Narayan to take some money and re-locate, which Narayan gratefully does. Gayetri and Narayan eventually return to Ramnagar where Gayetri finds a job as a teacher in the very orphanage that her son (now named Shyam) lives in. When Ratan's son, Kamal, returns from Singapore, he meets with Shyam and likes him, but when he finds out that his school-teacher is Gayetri, he informs the Manager to fire her as she is not of good character.
