But when they attempt to pull off one last job with more money at stake than ever before, the crew may find their plans interrupted by a hardened detective (Matt Dillon) who is hell-bent on solving the case.

A group of biologists discovers a huge network of unexplored caves in Romania. The biologists believe they have found an undisturbed eco-system that has produced a new species. They hire the best American team of underwater cave explorers in the world. Jack (Cole Hauser) is the team leader, and his brother Tyler (Eddie Cibrian) is the team's best scout. Their scuba equipment is also the best in the world; the scuba tank or rebreather will allow them to stay underwater for 24 hours. The team is so excited about the new cave that they start the dive immediately along with the biologists. While exploring deeper in the underwater caves, a cave-in blocks their exit, so they must find a new way out. They soon discover a larger carnivorous creature has added them to its food chain. A group of scientists set out an expedition to Borneo to look for the Blood Orchid, a flower which could grant longer life. But the Blood Orchid was gaurded by an anaconda, and they all end up running from the snakes and each other.

In Los Angeles, Quincy and his cousin Evan work at Spoil magazine. Quincy is an editor but Evan's job is never specified. Evan warns Quincy that Philip (known as Junior) is now in charge and plans layoffs. Philip calls Quincy to his office, but it is not to let him go. Because of Quincy's psychology degree, Philip believes Quincy is the right person to design procedures for laying people off without making them mad enough to take revenge. Quincy takes numerous books home where he is greeted by his girlfriend Helen's dog, who is still there for some reason. Quincy goes to Sig Sag to meet Helen, for their engagement party. But Helen wants to spend time apart. Quincy returns to work with a plan for firing people, and Philip hands him a list of the people to let go and tells Quincy to do it. After having to fire Sam, who thought he was coming in for a friendly chat, Quincy puts his name on the list of people to fire and walks out. Evan comes to Quincy's house because his mother was concerned about him. Quincy is a mess and so is the house. However, he has a big pile of papers on which he has attempted to write a breakup letter. That process is similar to being let go from a job. Spoil agrees to publish a book called Spoil's Breakup Handbook and before long it is climbing the newspaper's best-seller list. Quincy is making appearances at bookstores and on TV. Evan's girlfriend Nicky sees Quincy on TV while getting her hair done and realizes she wants to make a change. Afterward, she regrets what she has done. She had long hair but now looks like Halle Berry. Evan comes over but she won't let him see her so Evan goes to Quincy's house. Evan, thinking this means their relationship might be over, asks Quincy to meet with Nicky, telling him she has long hair. Quincy goes to Sig Sag where Evan and Nicky were supposed to meet but none of the girls with long hair are Nicky. But Quincy is attracted to the short-haired girl sitting next to him. Nicky has heard everything, and she decides to introduce herself as Mary. Quincy is supposed to say positive things about Evan, but he tells the truth about Evan instead, including some things that are not flattering. Quincy and Mary hit it off. Quincy tells Evan that Nicky never showed but he met a girl he likes. Also aware of Quincy's book is Rita, Philip's girlfriend. Philip wants to break up and on several occasions he and Quincy meet so Quincy can give him advice. Evan is still at Quincy's house, getting drunk and getting Helen's dog drunk. Rita shows up and, believing Evan is Quincy, says she knows Quincy is helping Philip break up with her. Rita indicates she wants a relationship with Quincy, who is a real man unlike the wimpy Philip, and when Evan wakes up he finds her phone number on the mirror. At Philip's place Rita is reading the book in the bathtub, and then the two have a conversation that doesn't go well. Evan goes to Nicky's place and when he sees her hair, says he doesn't like it. He says she stood him up but she says she didn't and that she went out with someone. Evan says he thought she wanted to break up while Nicky says she didn't want to. While massaging the flirtatious Mr. Lynch at work, Nicky tells co-worker Amy that Evan dumped her. Quincy doesn't know so Nicky continues to date him. However, when Evan asks for advice he says Nicky cut her hair. Quincy realizes Mary is Nicky but doesn't say anything. Helen is on a plane reading Quincy's book. Rita and Philip have naughty sex. After Heather Hadley's concert Nicky asks about Evan and Quincy says Evan and his girl broke up and Evan isn't happy. While Quincy and Nicky are making out, Quincy gets an angry phone call from Rita and Nicky hears the message. Believing Quincy is cheating on her, she gets mad. Quincy has no idea what the message is about. He visits her at work but is told she is not there. Evan and Rita, who still thinks he is Quincy, meet for sex. But she meets Philip in a post office since it is a public place where violence is less likely, and says she wants to get married. Quincy and Nicky meet in a park and admits who she is and Quincy says he didn't know, at first. At a surprise party for Quincy, everything goes wrong. Nicky didn't want to go but Amy insisted. Evan sees Nicky with Amy and hides. Helen is there, and she introduces herself to Nicky as Quincy's girlfriend. Then Rita also introduces herself. Evan, who now knows Quincy was dating Nicky, gets angry and leaves. Philip is in the hospital. The explanation is shown in flashbacks. As he and Rita plan for their wedding, Philip has a heart attack. When Evan and Quincy are visiting at the same time, Rita learns Evan is not Quincy but doesn't get mad. She wants to continue the relationship. Helen comes back to Quincy's place intending to resume their relationship. However, her dog now hates her. Later, she demands that Quincy have the dog put down. Quincy takes the dog to the animal shelter but is told that pugs don't usually get adopted. There are already several pugs. Quincy adopts them all and they chase Helen out of his house. Quincy wants to get back together with Nicky but learns she is taking a train to Portland. In fact, Nicky is taking Mr. Lynch on the train at the request of his daughter. Quincy narrowly misses seeing Nicky at the train station. Then he finds out what train she is on and starts chasing the train. Nicky pulls the emergency brake and the train stops, and they get on the train together, to Mr. Lynch's disappointment.

A group of Grifters rip off their latest mark and celebrate, while the group leader, Jake Vig (Edward Burns), explains the art of the con. In their latest con, they get their mark Lionel Dolby (Leland Orser) to pay them a briefcase full of money, to get away from being an accomplice to an apparent homicide (Jake made it look like he shot Gordo in a drug deal gone wrong). The local cops Omar and Lloyd work with Jake for a 10% cut, to add to the dramatic effect. When one of the four, Big Al (Louis Lombardi), is found shot to death, the other three learn that the latest money they stole belonged to a local Los Angeles crime lord known as The King (Dustin Hoffman). Lionel was an accountant for The King, and the money he gave to Jake was collection money that Lionel was holding on The King's behalf. When questioned, Lionel revealed the the sequence of events with Jake and his group. The King tracked Big Al, when Al made a large cash payment to a bookie, and bragged about how he had carried out a big score, which netted him the cash. Jake goes to meet The King, and accepts that he didn't know that Lionel worked for him. But he refuses to pay back the money, since The King killed Al. The Kind orders that the Grifters work for him and steal money from Morgan Price (Robert Forster), a rival who owns a bank. Jake enlists the aid of his remaining partners, Gordo (Paul Giamatti) and Miles (Brian Van Holt), and also convinces an independent con artist named Lily (Rachel Weisz) to round out their foursome. The King, a ruthless killer with ADHD, demands that one of his men, Lupus (Franky G), also go along. The con involves bribing a bank vice president to wire $5 million money offshore disguised as a business loan. Jake will withdraw the money and bring it back into the US in a carry on bag. Jake owed The King only $150,000. Jake asks The King to lend him $200,000 to bribe the banker. The King is livid with Jake, but Jake is confident of himself, and The King does extend him the additional credit. The gang finds Leon Ashby (John Carroll Lynch), VP of Corporate loans at Price Bank and decide that he will be the mark. Leon has no friends, no family, no life. Lily is the shell, who is supposed to make the whole pitch believable to Leon. But Lily dresses in a red wig, and wears a pigeon themed scarf, both of which Jake says has put a huge jinx on the entire operation. Lily proceeds with the plan and makes initial contact with Leon, posing as a start-up executive, looking for a business loan. She invites Leon for dinner with the gang, who also play their roles as executives of the start up. At dinner, the group convinces Leon that they have a buyer lined up for the company at 5-6X valuation, and need the loan for working capital till the sale takes place. That night Jake and Lily have sex. Leon agrees to sanction the loan the next day, in exchange for his own cut. The plan hits a snag when Special Agent Gunther Butan (Andy García) shows up in Los Angeles looking to finally bust Jake, who he has followed for years. Butan forces corrupt LAPD detectives Omar Manzano (Luis Guzman) and Lloyd Whitworth (Donal Logue) to switch their allegiance from Jake to him. Butan had videotapes of Omar and Lloyd dealing in drugs, which could put them away for a long time. After hearing about Butan's arrival, a nervous Jake pulls the plug on the whole con. He screams at Lily when she presses Jake to continue with the scam with some changes, making her walk out. Lupus gets Jake to reconsider nixing the con, hinting that The King will torture and kill the Grifters if the plan falls short. The con is back on, although now without Lily's help. Leon wires the money to Gordo in Belize. Jake tips off Lupus that they can keep the money and cut out The King. Lupus informs The King, who decides to intercept the money at the airport. Gordo brings it to Ontario Airport, where he is met by both Butan and The King's men, both sides after the $5 million in a carry on bag. Butan arrests The King and confiscates the money. Omar and Lloyd are also arrested by Internal Affairs, based on video evidence shared by Butan. Gordo disappears. Lupus, thinking The King has the money, reveals he was the one who killed Big Al. Lupus holds Jake at gunpoint, but he is shot by Travis (Morris Chestnut), a henchman for Morgan Price. It turns out that when Lily walked out, she went straight to Price and revealed the entire con, which was taking place that minute. Price told Travis to locate Jake to find out exactly how the con was engineered, and to stop such a thing from ever happening again. Travis takes Jake to an abandoned lot, and forces him to explain the entire story. A furious Lily takes out a gun and shoots Jake. Travis demands that he and Lily both disappear immediately. Minutes later, Butan arrives in a car, and Jake sits up from a pool of blood, unharmed. The final parts of the con are revealed. Lily's "quitting" was faked; a set-up to confuse Lupus. Butan is actually an old confidant of Jake's. He managed to "confiscate" the money and arrest The King at the same time. Butan has the money, and it's split five ways. Jake was wearing squibs to fake his own death in the lot. In the end, everyone was in on everything except for The King and Lupus (the first marks), Price and Travis (the second, bigger marks), and the two corrupt LAPD detectives, who have been arrested. The four Grifters reunite and celebrate, driving off into the night.

Sascha Petrosevitch (Steven Seagal) is a car thief who's brought in by criminal Nick Frazier (Jeffrey "Ja Rule" Atkins) to work for crime boss Sonny Eckvall (Richard Bremmer), who apparently shot and killed Sascha's wife. FBI Special Agent Ellen "E. Z." Williams (Claudia Christian) and her team show up to nail Nick, but things go bad, and Sascha gets shot. After eight months of recovery following his brief bout of being clinically dead from the shooting, Sascha is incarcerated along with Nick in the newly reopened Alcatraz prison. Sascha Petrosevitch (Steven Seagal) and Nick Frazier (Ja Rule).Run by the charismatic warden, Juan Ruiz "El Fuego" Escarzaga (Tony Plana), the place is known for its new state of the art death chamber where the condemned can choose from five different ways to die -- lethal injection, gas chamber, hanging, firing squad, or electric chair. Lester McKenna (Bruce Weitz) is the first prisoner scheduled to be executed. An older man, he stole $200,000,000 worth of gold bricks in a heist that resulted in five deaths. Federal Bureau of Prisons head Frank Hubbard (Stephen J. Cannell) and Supreme Court Justice June McPherson (Linda Thorson) have arrived to witness the execution, which is a result of June sentencing Lester. But she's not the only one interested in Lester. A small but well-equipped team of terrorists who call themselves the "49ers" have parachuted onto the island, and gained control of it. Led by 49er One, a.k.a. Hubbard's assistant Donny Johnson (Morris Chestnut), and 49er Six (Nia Peeples), the team finds Lester, and they want him to give up the location of his hidden stash of gold. When Lester won't tell them, Donny shoots a nearby priest (Eva-Maria Schönecker), and threatens to kill others if the info isn't delivered. Donny's plan is disrupted, however, when Sascha decides to step in and fight back. It turns out that Sascha is actually an undercover FBI agent who's been trying to use Nick to get to Sonny Eckvall. When Sascha rescues Lester, the 49ers strap June to the electric chair and threaten to kill her, all while Ellen and her team prepare a rescue plan from the mainland. With the help of Nick and some of the other inmates such as Twitch (Ricardo "Kurupt" Brown) and Little Joe (Michael "Bear" Taliferro), Sascha sets out to rescue June and bring Donny down, before Alcatraz becomes everyone's final resting place.

Shante Smith (Vivica A. Fox) is a woman who gives advice on how to keep a man in check. Her ideals are challenged when her man, an attorney, named Keith Fenton (Morris Chestnut), threatens to stray. Smith is a well-educated woman who feels that when it comes to men and their tricks, she knows them all. Shante is a senior advertising executive at Parker & Long agency. Keith is an attorney and was accomplished at sports in his prime. Shante says that men stay in line during the winter as they need the "indoor activity", but every year as spring arrives, it is breakup season. This is the time of the year when women start wearing short skirts, skimpy clothes and cause men to lose their mind. Shante says that she specializes in keeping men in line, who are unable to say no. Shante says that if men act right, women will automatically give them all the love and respect that they need. Shante's girlfriend Karen (Wendy Raquel Robinson) was cheated on by her boyfriend Michael (Bobby Brown). Karen was now living with Shante, and Shante was guiding her on the next steps. Karen is a top executive at a big engineering firm. Michael was a car mechanic with crooked teeth. Karen was charmed by him and in return Karen paid for his dental work and a completely new wardrobe. Michael asked Karen to marry him, but then started to take her for granted. It was 2 years since Michael proposed marriage and was now avoiding her. Shante asked Karen to kick Michael out. Tracey (Tamala Jones) is Shante's other friend, and her man Dwain (Dondre T. Whitfield) had roving eyes. Shante asks Tracey to put a Panty in the couch (that is not her own) and pull it out in front of Dwain to check his reaction. Dwain claims that they belong to his sister, who came to do laundry. Diedre (Mo'Nique) is Shante's other friend whose boyfriend Tyrone is always borrowing money from her and losing it in gambling. Shante says that before the actual cheating there are excuses like "I was working late", "I got new underwear as the old ones were worn out", Lost ring, trying to get back in shape. Connie "Conny" Spalding (Gabrielle Union) works in the same office as Keith and is the Vice President of Marketing. Conny is drop dead gorgeous. When Keith, is caught red-handed stepping out with a coworker, Shante institutes her "Ten Day Plan" to get her man in line. Keith had told Shante that he was "working late", but Shante finds him on the dance floor with a woman Julie (Natashia Williams) at a club, where she was with her girls. Shante casually confronts Keith (without making a scene) but hides the situation from her girlfriends. She says that the girlfriends will only give her bad advice, that will shake her confidence. On the other end, Shante's boyfriend Keith is being led by his friend Tony (Anthony Anderson), who thinks he knows all the tricks that women play. Tony says that Keith went out with Julie as he wanted to have sex with her. Tony tells Keith not to call Shante first as whoever calls first, loses ground. Keith calls the next day, taking his time as Tony taught him. But Shante rushes him saying that a client is coming in and asks him to meet at dinner. At dinner, Shante is deliberately 15 mins late to build anxiety. Kieth admits that he was wrong, as guided by Tony. Shante says that she wants some time apart to test the waters. Shante now decides to punish Keith was his stray behavior. She goes shopping with her friends, while she knows that Keith is feeling miserable. Keith calls twice, and Shante screens him. Keith even gets tickets to her favorite concert, but Shante doesn't budge. As Keith is still playing it cool, Shante ups the ante by hugging an acquaintance in church, while Keith's friends are watching. The friends tell Tony about the "hug". Keith calls Shante 8 times ad she still screens him. Keith misses work and Tony realizes that Keith is now hurting. Keith goes over to Shante's place, but Shante had already anticipated this. Keith tries to seduce Shante and when she pulls back, they have an argument, and Shante ends up yelling at Keith. Now the frustration is transferred over to Shante. Keith goes dancing with Conny. It is evident that Conny is attracted to Keith and wants to have sex with him. The next evening, Shante dresses all sexy and goes over to Keith's with the excuse of returning his remaining stuff. Keith begs her to come inside. Shante gets Keith all hot and heavy and then leaves in the middle of foreplay. Tony tells Keith that now Shante has turned the tables on him, and she has the power. Tony says that Keith is now fighting for all mankind as if Shante gets away with her tricks, soon women all the world will be trying the same thing to get their men under control. Keith decides to go to a party with Conny, knowing that Shante would be there. Shante is mortified to see Keith with Conny, as she expected Keith to return to her begging for forgiveness. Shante tells Conny to back off, but she refuses and tells Shante to control her own man. Shante's girlfriends were also at the party, and they see Keith with Conny. They heighten the situation by panicking and forcing Shante to make bad decisions. To counter Keith, Shante brings her own guy named Calvin to the party. She pretends to have a flat tire and reels in a smooth looking guy. Shante spends the entire party talking to this guy and then takes him to a quiet corner of the party. Keith confronts Shante and says that she is back to playing her games. Shante ignores Keith and drops a condom from her purse, leading Keith to believes that she will have sex with Calvin. Keith tells Shante that if she leaves with Calvin, he will sleep with Conny. Shante takes a gamble and walks out, hoping that Keith will come back to her. When Calvin drops her home, she bids goodbye to him. To Shante's shock, Keith never arrives. She goes to bar, where she finds Keith drinking alone. Shante admits that she was trying to control Keith with her rules. Keith admits that he really loves Shante and they get back together.

A Senate Armed Services Committee interviews a candidate for the position of Secretary of the Navy. Senator Lillian DeHaven (Anne Bancroft) from Texas criticizes the Navy (Secretary of the Navy Theodore Hayes (Daniel Von Bargen)) for not being gender neutral. Behind the curtains, a deal is struck: If women compare favorably with men in a series of test cases, the military will integrate women fully into all occupations of the Navy. The first test is the training course of the U.S. Navy Combined Reconnaissance Team (similar to the SEALs UDT/BUDs) Senator DeHaven selects topographical analyst Lieutenant Jordan O'Neil (Demi Moore), because she is physically more feminine (& hence would look good on the cover of magazines) than the other candidates. Jordan is known to speak her mind and not take shit from her superiors in operational situations. Jordan is dating Lieutenant Commander Royce Harper (Jason Beghe). Royce thinks Jordan won't survive the course and discourages her. This makes Jordan more determined to make it through. To make the grade, O'Neil must survive a grueling selection program in which almost sixty percent of candidates wash out, most before the fourth week, with the third week being particularly intensive ("hell week"). Captain Salem (Scott Wilson) is in charge of the program. The enigmatic Command Master Chief John James Urgayle (Viggo Mortensen) runs the training program that involves 20-hour days of tasks designed to wear down recruits' physical and mental strength, including pushing giant ship fenders up beach dunes, working through obstacle courses, and hauling landing rafts. His fellow trainers are Instructor Max Pyro (Kevin Gage) & Instructor Johns (David Warshofsky). trainees include Sergeant First Class Cortez (David Vadim), Ensign F. Lee 'Flea' Montgomery (Josh Hopkins), 'Slov' Slovnik (Jim Caviezel), Newberry (Angel David), Stamm (Stephen Ramsey) & Lieutenant 'Wick' Wickwire (Boyd Kestner). Lieutenant Blondell (Lucinda Jenney) is the medical officer on the training program and the only other female on base. Jordan has to shave her head to make sure her hair doesn't interfere with the physical demands of training. Slovnik has the hots for Jordan and makes several attempts of sexual harassment at her. Given a 30-second time "gender-norming" allowance in an obstacle course, O'Neil demands to be held to the same standards as the male trainees (she gets the same barracks and same everything as the rest of the batch). The master chief observes O'Neil helping the other candidates by allowing them to climb on her back to make it over the wall obstacle course. Cortez sabotages Jordan by refusing to pull her up (she was the last one) and Urgayle chews him out. Eight weeks into the program (She has already missed her period, as an nasty knee injury and jungle rot on the foot), during SERE training in Captiva, Florida, the Master Chief ties her to a chair (Jordan is captured with her team, after Cortez and Slovnik refuse to obey her orders and get caught, forcing the rest of the team to retreat) with her hands behind her back, grabs hold of her and slams her through the door, then picking her up off the floor he repeatedly dunks her head in ice-cold water in front of the other crew members. O'Neil retaliates and is successful in causing him some injury, despite her immobilized arms. In so doing, she acquires respect from him, as well as from the other trainees. Navy leaders, confident that a woman would quickly drop out, become concerned. The media learn of O'Neil's involvement, and she becomes a sensation known as "G.I. Jane." Soon, she must contend with trumped-up charges that she is a lesbian and is fraternizing with women. O'Neil is told that she will be given a desk job during the investigation and, if cleared, will need to repeat her training from the beginning. She decides to "ring out" (ringing a bell three times, signaling her voluntary withdrawal from the program) rather than accept a desk job. It is later revealed that the photo evidence of O'Neil's alleged fraternization came from Senator DeHaven's office (Chief of Staff (John Michael Higgins) figures it out as all faxes have the same smudge marks on the papers). Royce informs Jordan, who confronts DeHaven. DeHaven never intended for O'Neil to succeed; she used O'Neil as a bargaining chip to prevent military base closings in her home state of Texas. O'Neil threatens to expose DeHaven, who then has the charges voided and O'Neil restored to the program. The final phase of training, an operational readiness exercise, is interrupted by an emergency that requires the CRT trainees' support. The situation involves a reconnaissance satellite powered by weapons-grade plutonium that fell into the Libyan desert. A team of U.S. Army Rangers is dispatched to retrieve the plutonium, but their evacuation plan fails, and the trainees are sent to assist the Rangers. The Master Chief's shooting of a Libyan soldier to protect O'Neil leads to a confrontation with a Libyan patrol. During the mission, O'Neil, using her experience as a topographical analyst, realizes when she sees the team's map that the Master Chief is not going to use the route the others believe he will in regrouping with the others. She also displays a definitive ability in leadership and strategy while rescuing the injured Master Chief, whom she and McCool (Morris Chestnut) pull out of an explosives-laden "kill zone." With helicopter gunships delivering the final assault to the defenders, the rescue mission is a success. Upon their return, all those who participated in the mission are accepted to the CRT. Urgayle gives O'Neil his Navy Cross and a book of poetry containing a short poem, "Self-pity", by D. H. Lawrence, as acknowledgment of her accomplishment and in gratitude for rescuing him.
