When confronted with the news of her son's death, Gayetri loses control and with the help of a corrupt doctor, Ugranarayan has Gayetri committed to a mental hospital, where the doctor, Dr. Neelkanth (Alok Nath) inflicts shock treatment and other tortures on the brain of Gayetri, thus rendering her a virtual vegetable. Several years pass by, and then one day Gayetri escapes from her tormentors. Then begin the sudden deaths of Ugranarayan, his family, and his goons. Sitaram runs his family in an authoritarian manner. He has planned the marriage of his son, Vasudev, only to be told that Vasudev loves another woman, Suman, who he plans to marry. Sitaram looks forward to seeing his son and his family after all these years. He is enraged when he finds that the only one sent to visit him is Sita, his granddaughter, and the excuse for Vasudev and Suman not attending is that "they are busy". Old wounds surface, and Sitaram will have nothing to do with his granddaughter, who has brought a special gift for her granddad, from her dad. Sanam Malhotra studies in a hostel, while her parents, Surendra and Sushma, and brother, Jatin, live in Bombay in a small flat. Things change for the Malhotras when they are able to sell a large plot to the builders of a five star hotel. They move up in life and buy a bungalow and several cars and arrange for Sanam to stay with them. But these material possessions does make them a little snobbish, as Jatin cannot hear of his friend, Karan, the son of Bank Manager, Amar Nath, for falling in love with his sister. Surendra has Karan arrested for being near Sanam. Independent minded Sanam has also fallen in love with Karan, and when she is imprisoned by Surendra, both elope, much to chagrin of Surendra, who is aware that widowed Amar is having an affair with a woman named Prema Mohan. Surendra & Jatin with the help of Vishnu Dada and his goons hunt them down, but the lovebirds are rescued by Uncle Joe, a friend of Karan. After being rescued, they are asked by Joe to take a holiday. What Sanam does not know is that Karan has taken to smuggling so that he can rich as the Malhotras. The second wife of kind-hearted,and generous Amirchand Bhargav is Durgadevi Bhargav (Nadira), who is exactly the opposite of her late husband. She rules over her household, alongwith her brother, Makhanlal (Madan Puri), with an iron hand, and also over her step-daughter, Shanti (Vidya Sinha), who she treats worse than her servants. Due to her brutality, there is always a dearth of servants in her household, and hence most of the work must be done by Shanti. Her other daughter is Roopa (Moushumi Chatterjee), is bad-tempered and spoiled. When a former employee of Amirchand, Ratanlal (Shreeram Lagoo) approaches Durgadevi for marrying her two sons to her two daughters, she humiliates him and turns him away. Unperturbed by this, he asks the assistance of his two sons, Ram (Sanjeev Kumar) and Laxman (Shashi Kapoor), so that the marriages can take place, and at the same time Durgadevi and Makhanlal be taught a lesson. Both the sons readily agree to do this, and Ram goes to Durgadevi household as a servant to woo Shanti; while Laxman poses as a wealthy playboy to woo Roopa. But Makhanlal and his wife, Jwala (Shashikala) want Roopa to marry their jailbird son, Chander (Ranjeet), and will not stop at anything, including abducting Durgadevi herself, to pave their way to wealth.

Chandru lives in a palatial house with his dad, Ram Kumar; mom Sita; elder brother Shyam and his wife. Chandru is in love with Geeta Sinha, the only daughter of wealthy Dr. Sinha, and would like to marry her. Geeta, too is in love with Chandru and introduces him to her dad. Dr. Sinha has no objections, the young couple are then formally engaged and a wedding date is set. The wedding preparations take place in both the households, and soon the big day arrives. Before the marriage could be formalized, Dr. Sinha asks Ram that he has heard that Chandru is not the son of Sita but of a prostitute named Radha. This shocks everyone present, and it looks like Ram has a lot of explaining to do in order to get his son married or else live with this stigma for the rest of his life.

Believing that Saroj is taking advantage of his younger brother, Vijay, a crime reporter, marries her and abandons her soon after. Meanwhile, Laxmi, the daughter of Vijay's mentor, secretly loves him. Vijay (Jeetendra) is a Crime Reporter and very often helps the police in apprehending criminals. When his stepmother (Kamini Kaushal) passes away, she asks him to look after his step-brother, Anand (Vijay Arora), which he promises to do so. Thinking that some girl named Saroj (Moushumi Chatterjee) is taking advantage of Anand, he secretly marries her, and abandons her. Vijay's mentor is Rai saheb (Ashok Kumar), who had deserted his wife (Nirupa Roy) and his daughter Saroj, and son, Chandu (Rakesh Roshan). Rai saheb unknowingly hires Saroj as a lady servant for his two daughters, one of whom is Laxmi (Sarika) who is secretly in love with Vijay, and other one, very young, is handicapped and confined to a wheelchair. Vijay and her dad want Laxmi to marry Anand, which she refuses. Chandu has fallen into bad company of a criminal boss (Prem Chopra) and his sidekick Kitty (Komila Virk). Unknowingly Chandu assaults his very own father, and kidnaps his younger sister to satisfy the boss. Saroj is determined to honor the marriage, but Vijay is not. Will these two ever get together? Sarojini re-locates to Bombay where she will eventually be treated as a maidservant, and live a life confined in the four walls, while Raghu will be dependent for all his needs on Ramesh and Shobha.
