Anita finds shelter with a street perfomer Birju when she is abandoned by her relatives due to dowry issues

A wealthy man, Rai, has a no-good son and is glad to have found trustworthy Anand to help him with his business. But Anand is actually part of a conspiracy against Rai. Mr. Rai is a wealthy businessman in Jammu, India, and lives in a palatial house with his wife, Shobha, a wheelchair-bound daughter, Ashu, a grown son, Rakesh, and a school-going son, Raju. His son despises him and is waiting him for to die, so that he can inherit all the wealth and spend it on dancing girls, alcohol, and gamblers. One day while Rai was returning from the Jammu & Kashmir Bank with a suitcase full of cash, he is attacked by bandits, but is rescued by a young man named Anand. Anand is injured in this attack and is nursed by Shobha and the rest of the Rai family. Rai himself trusts Anand and initially appoints him as a Chief Supervisor, very much to the chagrin of Rakesh, who attempts, in vain, to implicate Anand in the theft of 2 Lakh Rupees. Anand uses fisticuffs to convince a hoodlum named Girdhari to let go of Rai's property. These incidents provoke Rai to ask Rakesh to leave the house, and promote Anand as the Manager. What the Rai family do not know is that Anand actually works for Girdhari and enacted this charade just to get in the good books of the Rai family - his motive to steal a golden statue of a Hindu Deity. A poor rickshaw-puller adopts an abandoned child and brings him up as his son but tragedy strikes when the boy becomes crippled as a result of polio infection. Mahesh is a poor rickshaw puller. One day, he goes to temple and sees a child lying on the stairs. He takes him inside the temple to give him to his parents but the priest assuming that the child is his sin, asks him to get out of the temple. Police constable also helps the priest and asks Mahesh to take his child along-with him. Mahesh tells them that it is not his child but they do not listen. Then Mahesh tries to leave the child but fate lets him take the child home. There also, he faces opposition from the neighborhood due to the child but irrespective of their behavior, Mahesh starts bringing up the child and names him 'Hindustan'. On the other hand, Radha, the child's mother attempts suicide because the child's father, Vinod, refuses to marry her. So, unable to bear the burden of sin, she tries to commit suicide but is saved by the local people. When she comes into conscious, she starts searching her child. She goes to police and also requests Vinod but Vinod rejects her cruelly. Vinod gets injured in an accident and is ashamed of his behavior. He apologizes to Radha and both of them get married. They along-with Inspector Ramesh start finding their child. In bringing up the child, Sheela, helps Mahesh. One day Mahesh comes to know that Hindustan has got infected with polio. He, feeling responsible for Hindustan's disease because of his uncleanliness, works hard to give the child a good education.
