A young medical student works as a night watchman at a forensic institute with the intent to find out more about her troubled family history. When she discovers that the serial killer who almost killed her parents is alive and meets him, she sets into motion a catastrophic chain of events.

Jacob Harlon is a successful stockbroker living with his wife, Katherine, and son Joshua, in California. One night he drives his wife and friends home after dinner and causes a collision which kills one of his friends. Advised to take a plea deal due to him being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, Jacob is sentenced to 16 months at the California Institution for Men in Chino. Shocked by the brutality of prison life, Harlon stands his ground and attacks an African-American inmate when provoked, drawing the attention of Bottles, the "shot caller" for a violent white supremacist gang, PENI. In return for protection and entry into the gang, Jacob is forced to smuggle heroin and kill a "snitch" within the gang. Harlon rises in rank, obtains the alias "Money", and acquires several gang-related tattoos. Harlon also appears muscular and his personality changes dramatically, hardened by prison life. During a riot, Harlon stabs another inmate to save the life of the head of the Sureños, but is caught on camera. This earns him respect from other gang leaders, however he is sentenced to nine more years. Harlon ceases all contact with his family, demanding that they move on and forget him. Harlon is transferred to Corcoran State Prison under maximum-security. There, he is introduced to an inmate called "The Beast", who commands the Aryan Brotherhood, the top of the white prison gang hierarchy. Impressed with Harlon's dedication, Beast promotes him to his second-in-command. Set to be released after serving over seven years, Harlon is ordered by Beast to orchestrate a weapons deal with the Sureños. Knowing he will be on parole, Harlon hesitates until Beast informs him that membership in the gang does not end when leaving prison and threatens his family. Upon release, he is greeted by "Shotgun" and other gang members, including Howie, a young Afghanistan war veteran with no criminal record. Harlon survives an attack at a party and orders Howie to answer to no one but him. Harlon's parole officer Ed Kutcher, is tipped off about the weapons deal and places Harlon under surveillance. As Harlon prepares to sell a cache of weapons, Howie reveals that he does not want to become a gang member. Harlon also discovers Shotgun is Kutcher's informant. After Harlon transfers his finances to his wife, she brings Joshua to meet him against his wishes. Seeing how his son has grown up without him, Harlon holds his emotions. Joshua demands answers but is unable to understand his father's gang life. Harlon shuts the door and has a brief emotional breakdown. On the day of the deal, Harlon escapes his surveillance and goes to Shotgun's house where he kills him. Kutcher finds Shotgun's body and retrieves his cellphone. After meeting the Sureños, Harlon texts their coordinates to Shotgun's cellphone. Realizing that Shotgun hid more of the weapons to sell himself, Harlon warns Howie to leave the criminal life. and forces him out of the vehicle. As the deal closes, the police, ATF, and SWAT-alerted by Harlon's text-surround the gangs; only Howie escapes and watches from a distance, realizing Harlon saved his life. Fully validated, Harlon is sentenced to life imprisonment with no possibility of parole. He turns down Kutcher's offer to testify against Beast in exchange for a full pardon. Harlon is returned to Corcoran, where a corrupt prison guard brings him to Beast. Realizing Harlon was responsible for the raid, Beast orders him to live out his sentence with the guilt that his family will be killed for his actions. This provokes Harlon, having smuggled in a handcuff key and a razor blade, he frees himself. Harlon subdues the guard and forces him to drop his radio before locking him in a cell. Beast realizes that Harlon tipped off law enforcement knowing he would be sent back to Corcoran. Harlon unlocks Beast's cage and a brief fight ensues leaving Beast mortally wounded. Harlon watches a dying Beast and demands "nobody's touching my family". He orders the prison guard to claim that he acted in self-defense, and assumes Beast's place as the new leader atop the gang hierarchy. With his family's safety secured, Harlon accepts his life sentence, and notifies Kutcher about the remaining weapons. He receives a letter from Joshua, explaining that he and Katherine are moving on, living a successful and happy life, and that he has forgiven his father. This touches Harlon emotionally as he looks at pictures of his former life with his family. He realizes that sacrificing his own freedom to kill Beast was the only way he could truly protect his family from his other enemies. The film ends with Harlon exercising in the yard.

Modesty Blaise (Alexandra Staden) is working as a croupier in a casino in Tangier. Modesty believes that the house always wins and that every person is born with a certain amount of luck. Modesty believes in saving her luck for when she needs it. The casino did not mind people getting lucky and winning large bets, when Modesty was asked to step in when a customer became greedy. Modesty was very fond of her employer Henri as he had taught her how to fleece a customer and reel him in. Making the customer win on small bets to make them feel lucky and then reeling them in on the big bets to clean them out. Raphael Garcia (Raymond Cruz) is the head of security at the casino. Irina (Eugenia Yuan) is a waitress. Irina makes almost nothing in tips, and she believes that men don't like her, Modesty tells her not to dress like a nun and show some skin as men only come to the casino to feel happy. Modesty says that when a pretty girl pays a man some attention, they feel alive. The more they feel alive, the more likely they are to spend money. She also tells Irina to smile a lot more. A group of violent criminals assassinate her employer Henri Louche (Valentin Teodosiu) and enter the casino while shooting its staff and demanding entry to the casino's safe. Modesty delays her retaliation and retribution as she protects the lives of her staff. Henri was killed on his way home and Raphael left the casino early to be with his wife. Modesty was in charge when the criminals enter the casino. The criminals, led by Miklos (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) mistakenly kill the only person Boutellis (Bogdan Dumitrescu) who can open the safe. Miklos wanted entry into the safe and Boutellis claimed that he did not know the combination. Modesty informs Miklos that he killed the only person who could open the safe, and the only other person was Louche himself. Miklos says that he killed Louche, which shocks Modesty. Modesty arranges for Raphael to arrive who has the password for the computer that holds the details of the entry to the vault. The vault combination changes every 24 hours and only the computer has the details. Modesty tells Miklos that the vault is booby trapped, and it will kill everyone if Miklos tries to blow it open. She adds that Louche never kept his records at the casino and all his main money was kept in Switzerland, and what was in the safe was merely pocket change by comparison. Miklos is livid to realize that he had been outsmarted by Louche. Modesty calls Raphael, who figures that Henri is dead, and that Modesty & the rest of her crew is in a hostage situation. As the criminals and their captives await Raphael, Modesty takes on the leader of the criminals at the game of roulette. Modesty provokes Miklos by asking him to bet with real money. She says that every man who walks into the casino bets his life, his business, his love and it says a lot about who they are. She insinuates that Miklos is a coward. Miklos argues that all the money in the casino already belongs to him. They agree that if she wins twice in a row, a captive sworn to not tell what happened is released. When she loses, she has to tell the truth about her background to Miklos who has become fascinated by her. She relates her life story little by little in the manner of Scheherazade. Scheherazade is a legendary Persian queen who is the main storyteller in the frame narrative of the Middle Eastern collection of tales known as One Thousand and One Nights (also known as Arabian Nights). She is known for her wit and storytelling skills, which she uses to delay her execution at the hands of a vengeful king. Modesty tells her life story in flashback beginning as an orphaned child in a refugee camp in the Balkans. From early on, Modesty was near soldiers who presumably sexually assaulted her, and she had no fear of guns or violence as she had grown up next to it. At the camp she meets her mentor Professor Lob (Fred Pearson) whom she saves from a gang of bullies who were trying to steal his briefcase from him. Lob and Modesty escape the refugee camp and together hike their way into Turkey. Lob teaches her his knowledge of various languages and martial arts until his death in Algeria where the government forces were battling a group of rebels and Modesty and Lob were caught in the crossfire. Modesty makes her way to Tangier. Henri watches Modesty pick pocketing wallets from tourists and decides to give her a job at the casino. The time setting of the film is kept vague. Although flashback sequences involving warfare invoke World War II or other conflicts in the late 1940s and early 1950s (in keeping with the original comic strip), Modesty as an adult is shown using computers and other current (for 2004) technology. In between Modesty keeps winning and provokes Miklos into honoring his bet and releasing the hostages every-time she wins twice in a row. She gets Olivette (Laura Iordache) (another waitress) free along with another prisoner who has been shot in the leg. Miklos also reveals that Henri sold his dad defective guns, due to which he died. Another waitress Danielle (Ana Maria Florescu) decides to escape while Modesty had kept Miklos, and his crew engaged. But Miklos finds her missing and launches a search. She is shot and captured. As Raphael is delayed, Miklos decides to shoot Irina, but Modesty says she knows the combination and can get Miklos into the vault. Modesty opens the safe, but unknown to Miklos, Raphael was waiting at the other end, having entered the safe via a tunnel. The criminals eventually enter the safe but are confronted with a revenging Modesty. Raphael takes on Miklos's men, while Modesty attacks Miklos and kills him. Modesty takes over the casino and cancels the drug deal that Henri was doing. She tells Raphael that the casino will no longer deal in drugs.

Peter Colt (Paul Bettany), an English professional Tennis Player in his thirties (he is 32 years old) whose ranking has slipped from 11th to 119th in the world, considers he never really had to fight for anything. His wealthy but not close family (including brother Carl (James McAvoy), father Edward (Bernard Hill) and mother Augusta (Eleanor Bron)) easily put him through studies and allowed him to pursue his Tennis ambitions. Peter bravely exchanges jokes with his German sparring partner Dieter Prohl (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), who is in a similar position. For a tennis player, winning a Grand Slam title is the pinnacle of their sporting career. Though, he earns a wild-card spot to the Wimbledon tournament, but internally feels that it's time to admit he's getting too old to compete with fitter coming men (or boys) and intends, after this last Wimbledon, to take a job with the prestigious tennis club instead. The job offered to him by club manager Ian Frazier (Robert Lindsay). However, as Wimbledon begins, by accident, he bumps into Lizzie Bradbury (Kirsten Dunst), the American rising star of female tennis, falls in love with her and finds her interest in him changes his entire perception, even gives him the strength to win again. Peter finds that his game gets better as he spends more time with Lizzie. Meanwhile, Lizzie comes with a reputation of arguing with the chair umpires as a tactic to disrupt the game. Lizzie invites Peter up to her room, and they have sex as Lizzie believes that this can help one relax and help with their game. After an unexpected win in the first round, Peter is about to lose his second match (against an opponent who had won the French Open previously) but turns it around when he hears Lizzie cheering for him in the crowd. In his third match, he unexpectedly comes up against his training partner and best friend, Dieter Prohl. Peter beats Dieter, who comments that Peter has developed a 'killer instinct', the ability to win the match no matter the cost or the method. Peter's unexpected success makes him a sensation in Britain, as many place their hopes on either him or his next competitor, Tom Cavendish, to deliver a British win at Wimbledon. Meanwhile, Carl had been betting against Peter on every match and kept losing. Carl is mystified as Peter has always come through for him previously. Ron (Jon Favreau) is Peter's agent who asks him to capitalize on his fame before his next match with Tom. As their love grows, Peter's game becomes better and better, but her game starts worsening as she spends too much time with Peter, ignoring her practice and tiredness. However, her overprotective father-manager Dennis Bradbury (Sam Neill) proves determined to nip their relationship in the bud, believing it detrimental to her career. At a reception for the Wimbledon players at the London Eye, Lizzie is approached by an old flame, arrogant American star and world number 1 Jake Hammond. Hammond deduces that Peter and Lizzie are seeing each other when Peter defends her. When Hammond insults Lizzie, Peter punches him and the couple run away to Peter's flat in Brighton. They spend the entire day together and their picture was taken by Carl, who sold it to the media to make good on his betting losses and to put more against Peter in his upcoming game. That next day, Dennis comes to Peter's apartment and yells at him for spoiling his daughter's game. She overhears this and decides to leave him. Lizzie says that they can be together after the tournament. Both of them play several games with different opponents and win. Peter faces off against Tom Cavendish and beats him when Cavendish sprains his ankle, demonstrating his ability to go all the way. But without Lizzie's support, Peter's confidence and concentration start to shake. Lizzie enters into semi-final while Peter also manages to reach semi-final but with difficulty. The night before their semi-final games, Peter sneaks into Lizzie's hotel room and persuades her to have sex. Initially, she denies as she requires more rest and sleep for her semi-final game next morning, but later on agrees to. Next day, he performs quite well and wins his semi-final match in straight sets, whilst Lizzie loses her match due to tiredness for lack of sleep and losing her focus after last night together with Peter. Lizzie gets upset and breaks their relation while accusing his madness and last night greed for sex as cause for loss of her match, her dreams and perhaps her career too. She leaves before he can say or explain anything and decides to immediately return to USA. Peter has to play the final match against Jake Hammond (Austin Nichols), an arrogant American star who Peter has already had an argument with involving Lizzie but finds himself out classed. At the airport, Lizzie watches an interview on TV in which Peter apologizes to her and declares his love for her openly. She drops her idea to go home and comes back to Wimbledon. Before Lizzie reaches the stadium, Peter has already lost two sets and is running behind in the third one due to the fast and forceful tricky serves by Jake. He has lost all of his focus due to breakup with Lizzie. Before the game is interrupted by rain, his back muscles get stressed, and he has started thinking about quitting the game rather than face a sure defeat. Suddenly, Lizzie comes to him in the dressing room and tells him that she has forgiven him and prepares him to play and face the fate rather than quit. She tells him the secret about Jake's tricky serves. With Lizzie cheering him on, Peter makes a recovery in the game and wins the title (3-6, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 {7-5}, 6-4) with a diving volley. After the game he retires. He and Lizzie get married, and with his support, Lizzie goes on to win the U.S. Open and Wimbledon twice, ultimately achieving her dreams. In the last scene, Peter is with their youngest child, a boy, watching Lizzie and their eldest child, a girl, playing tennis together on a neighborhood court in New York City.
