Balraj Kapoor (Amitabh Bachchan) is a rich businessman, happy and content with his world. He and his wife Shobhna (Hema Malini) live happily together, and they wait for their only son Avinash 'Avi' (Salman Khan) to return from his studies abroad. After an absence of 7 years, Avinash comes back to India. He reunites with his parents at the airport and races home. Back home, Avi joins his father's business. Balraj is very competitive and even engages Avi is a car race from time to time. Balwant is Balraj's elder brother. Pushpa Kapoor (Sarika) is Balraj and Balwant's widowed younger sister-in-law who has always been looked down upon by Balwant for being a widow. Panchi (Rajpal Yadav) is the household servant and chauffeur. Balwant has a son Khushi (Parmeet Sethi). Balwant insists that Indian traditions are followed in the house with full respect to the culture and religious practices. One day they decide to go golfing. Avi and Balraj engage in a friendly banter. Avi accuses Balraj of cheating at sports. Avi picks the ball and accidentally throws it in the wrong direction which ruins a painting. The young woman painting the picture, Malvika 'Millie' (Rani Mukherjee) gets furious with Balraj and leaves. Balraj admonishes Millie for trying to paint on a golf course. Balraj says that he had paid for a round of golf and that it is not a park where Millie can spread her equipment. Balraj insults Millie by saying that her painting was not very good in the first place. Millie is distraught as she had invested 3 days in the painting, and her father had taken special permission for her to paint on the golf course. Later on, Avi runs into Millie on the golf course, and they start to talk. Millie tells him that a stupid old man ruined her painting and points out that it was Balraj; but she doesn't know that the 'old man' is Avi's father, and he doesn't tell her. Avi says that Balraj is his boss, and he works for him for a pittance. They start to hang out together while slowly falling in love with each other. Avi tells Millie that he was fired from his job for speaking up his mind and standing up for the truth. Avi pursues Millie, but makes it sound like they are meeting by chance and that destiny is bringing them together. Later, Avi tells Millie that Balraj apologized for his actions and begged him to come back to work. Millie stays with her parents Jeet (Sharat Saxena) and Suman (Smita Jaykar). When Millie comes home, she is visited by her childhood friend Rajat (John Abraham). She tells him that she loves someone, which devastates him because he is also in love with her. One day, Millie goes to Avi's office to drop off a painting (Avi's interior designer had purchased 3 of Millie's paintings and she was delivering them) and finds out that Balraj is Avi's father. When Avi shows up, she leaves the office crying. He chases after her and says that the only reason he lied to her was because he loves her. She doesn't accept his apology right then, but when Balraj apologies to her for ruining her painting, she forgives them both. Avi asks Millie to get dressed up for a party at his house. When she arrives, there is no one except Avi. He proposes to her, and she accepts. The next day, Avi's whole family visits Millie's house to discuss marriage and everyone agrees, except Rajat. Rajat tells Avi that he'll let him marry her if only he promises to always keep her happy and never let her get sad. Balwant brings his entire family to the wedding, except Pushpa, whom he considers a bad omen and not fit for public functions. Balraj respects his wife's wishes and invites Pushpa for the Phere ceremony, overruling Balwant. Avi and Millie get married and soon they're expecting a child. Time goes on, Millie's water breaks while in yoga class and Avi and she flee to the hospital where they are blessed with a healthy baby boy. Their child Ansh grows up to be a sweet and intelligent boy. The family throws a birthday bash for Ansh and wait for Avi who is in a meeting. But Avi never arrives home. He is involved in an accident and dies. Millie is devastated. Balraj seeks to bring happiness back into Millie's life and gets into contact with Rajat. He learns that Rajat still loves Millie. Balraj asks Rajat to marry Millie. Rajat meets Ansh and bonds well with him. However, there is stiff opposition from Shobhna and Balraj's conservative older brother Balwant (Om Puri). Shobhna fears losing her grandson Ansh, while Balwant thinks a widow's remarriage is a sin. However, Balraj stands firm and convinces everyone. In the end, Rajat and Millie get married, and everything is well. Avinash comes in as a ghost and blesses his dad with happiness.

Two British nationals (who were tiger experts investigating the large scale poaching of tigers in Indian National Parks) are killed by a ferocious tiger in Corbett National Park in India. This incident is followed by several other tiger attacks, and many deaths result, prompting National Geographic to send a correspondent, Krish Thapar (John Abraham) to the national park and ascertain what really happened. Thapar is accompanied by his wife Riya (Esha Deol). Bashir Khan (Parmeet Sethi) is the forest officer suspected of facilitating poaching in all National Parks that he is assigned to. A group of youngsters, consisting of Dev Malhotra (Vivek Oberoi), his girlfriend Ishika (Lara Dutta), Sajid (Kushal Punjabi) and Vishal (Vishal Malhotra), are on a hunting trip in the hopes of sighting and shooting some big prey. The youngsters' car breaks down (After Dev hits a black cat which Ishika considers very very bad luck). Bagga (Vineet Sharma), a passing by driver, gives them a lift to the farmhouse they were heading towards. Bagga convinces the group to head towards the Orbit National Park for some big game hunting. Bagga tells them that venturing into the core area of the jungle is prohibited and is very dangerous. Bagga's car accidentally hits Krish's, which also breaks down and is at the middle of the road. The two groups decide to travel together in Bagga's car, leaving a mechanic repairing Krish's car. Just a few seconds they set off, the mechanic disappears, and they believe a tiger just took him away and decide not to risk their lives to look for him. Bagga finds them a place to stay -- a guesthouse owned by Pandey (Daya Shankar Pandey). Pandey is a guide who agrees to lead them the next day to the core area, where tigers live, for hunting. Pandey disappears the very night and his body is found in the wild the next day by Bashir Khan, with his head chopped off. Krish starts to be suspicious about the real cause of the recent rising deaths in the jungle, as he is an animal expert and recognizes Pandey is not killed by a tiger or any animal. Warned by Bashir Khan and scared, the group decide to leave the jungle. Before they depart, they find Sajid missing, again not by an animal. Dev, close friend to Sajid, assumes the latter is going to the core area alone for hunting. However, the group decide to leave without Sajid. Expectedly, Sajid joins the series of mystery deaths and is found with his head chopped off. The rest are soon confronted by three tigers on the way. Kaali Pratap Singh (Ajay Devgan), who claims to live in the jungle, saves them from the upcoming tiger attack. On their continued way out of the jungle, they find the road is blocked by rocks due to the landslide caused by rain. Kaali shows up again and agrees to lead them out of the jungle. On the way the car has a minor accident when Bagga cant take his foot off the gas pedal. The group is forced to take a break while Bagga repairs the vehicle. Kaali appears to be very knowledgeable about the jungle. Krish, who is now more curious about the mysterious deaths, asks him if he knows what's behind those deaths. Kaali answers that there was a mad guide in this jungle, who always led tourists to wrong places to make them killed by animals (he did this as he didn't like the exploitation of animals and forests by humans and wanted humans to learn a lesson). Angry villagers later found about it and beat him to death. But his spirit -- the ghost -- remains in the jungle and keeps killing tourists. But none of them believe Kaali's story. Bagga later disappears when repairing his car, rising the fear among the rest. Vishal is also killed by their car explosion a few moments later (the group tries to cross a small wooden bridge to get to the other side, but the car gets stuck and leaks gasoline. Vishal acts weird and refuses to get out of the car and is blown away when a stray cigarette that he threw in the water, ignites the fuel). The rest carry on and reach a deserted guesthouse in the evening, outside which there is a well. All go to sleep after being warned by Kaali not to get close to the well. Riya wakes up thirsty in the night. She decides to get water from the well despite Kaali's warning, and is later accidentally hung by her foot in the well and dies. The rest figure out Riya's death and try to pull out her body, while Dev suddenly realizes that Kaali does not have a reflection in well's water. He also sees that Kaali is not visible in any of the videos that had been recorded by Vishal so far. He realizes that the story Kaali told them is true and he is the ghost referred in the story. Dev makes an excuse to push Kaali off and convinces the others that Kaali is a ghost. They decide to escape from Kaali. They encounter several accidents on their way out of the jungle, apparently arranged by Kaali, but finally manage to escape. Krish now knows what's behind those mysterious deaths but he is not going to tell anyone because no one is going to believe him. Meanwhile in the jungle, Kaali keeps killing tourists.

In 1984 the former Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards, and since then the Sikhs have been a target of violent backlashes by radicals and the Punjab Police. During 1985 Gursharan Singh Soman lived a peaceful life as a farmer in rural Punjab, along with his elderly parents, Gurdev and Tejpal, and an unmarried sister, Guddi. Gursharan meets with and gets engaged to the Station House Officer's only daughter, Jassi Sandhu. Shortly thereafter her father is killed in a drive-by shooting, and a new Officer, Randhawa, takes over from him. Far from being ethical and honest, he is only concerned with fulfilling a quota of deaths of so-called terrorists by fake police encounters. Jassi and Gursharan get married as Jassi has no other relatives. When the police find a duffel bag of automatic weapons in Soman's house, they immediately arrest Gursharan and beat him up severely, even though he claims his innocence, alleging that real terrorists had forced themselves upon the family at gun-point. When a deputation from the town asks Randhawa to set him free, he does so, and the Soman family settle down. Guddi is soon to get married to a young man who loves her. Then in July, 1987, Sikh terrorists gun down a bus full of non-Sikhs, setting off a shock wave in the entire country. Punjab Police are instructed to maintain order, even if it means to do away with law. A large number of Sikhs are hunted down and killed in fake police encounters, scores are arrested and tortured. Gursharan is arrested again and severely beaten up in police custody. When Guddi goes to plead with Randhawa to release him, she too is imprisoned and beaten by a burly policewoman. Gursharan's American-based friend, Darshan Singh Gill, comes to their rescue and arranges for Gursharan to visit the U.S.A. on a travel visa as a hockey player. Once in America, Gursharan applies for political asylum, and is granted one, which also permits him to sponsor Jassi, and his new-born son to America. After Jassi's arrival, Gursharan gets a job in a corner store, while Jassi works as a Gas Attendant. It is then Gursharan gets the news that his father has suffered a heart-attack and may not live long. Gursharan is ready to leave for India to be near his family in this crucial hour, but his leaving America may well revoke his political asylum, and even if he does leave America and arrives in India, there is more than a bullet from the Punjab Police awaiting him. —rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com)

Saraswati Batra (Waheeda Rehman), a graceful and devoted widow, has spent her life raising her three sons - Om, Jai, and Jagadish - in their ancestral home. When her husband passed away twenty years ago, her eldest son, Om (Anil Kapoor), stepped into the role of caretaker and father figure. Sacrificing his own youth, Om held the family together with love, duty, and unwavering moral strength. Now an adult, Om works at a music company owned by his wealthy childhood friend, Shekhar Malhotra (Parmeet Sethi). While Shekhar believes money is the greatest power in life, Om believes in love, family, and integrity. Om has taken out large loans from Shekhar to support the dreams of his younger brothers: Jai (Fardeen Khan), an automobile designer studying in the U.S. with dreams of building the world's fastest car, and Jagadish (Abhishek Bachchan), a brilliant but impulsive computer student in college whose lazy friends beg him to help them out of trouble with attendance - which he does by hacking and changing their attendance records. Om marries Ayesha (Mahima Chaudhry), a lively and strong-willed MTV VJ who pranks him on national television. Despite a rocky start, they fall deeply in love and have a child. Meanwhile, Jai falls in love with Neetu (Urmila Matondkar), a wealthy and westernized NRI. Neetu's mother (Lillete Dubey) doesn't object to Jai as a person, but resents his middle-class family and their decision to remain in India. Her more understanding husband (Raju Kher) supports Jai silently but firmly. After Jai graduates top of his class, Om and Saraswati urge him to return to India. However, Jai wants to stay in America, as he's offered a huge opportunity by an automobile company. But Om pleads with him to return, as he wants the brothers to stay together and needs his help with the growing financial burden. Jai reluctantly agrees, hoping to find work and marry Neetu. He is offered an 8-year contract but feels trapped by it and wants to head back to America, despite Om telling him to take it to help repay Shekhar's loan. Jai clashes with Om after urging him to sell their home as an alternative to pay their debts. Jai insists that Om is forcing the brothers to sacrifice their lives by clinging to outdated ideals and refusing to sell the house. Jagadish defends Om, reminding Jai that the house represents their father's dream and values, and that selling it would be a betrayal of everything he stood for. This confrontation marks the breaking point. Jai makes it clear he loves and respects Om but needs to go back to America to fulfill his dream. He returns to America, leaving Om emotionally devastated. After Jai's departure, Om - drowning in debt - approaches Tanya (Sheeba Chadha), the real estate agent who had once offered to buy the house. To his shock, Tanya reveals that she already owns the property. Her fiance, Shekhar, has legally seized the house under a clause in the loan agreement that Om had overlooked. Om had trusted Shekhar blindly, never expecting betrayal. Now, he and his family are evicted from the home Om protected for decades. Om is shattered - not just by losing the house, but by the fact that the friend he trusted most has exploited him. Shekhar, for his part, is also deeply hurt by Om's reaction. He reminds Om that when he gave him money, Om praised him, but now resents him for expecting repayment. He accuses Om of romanticizing morality while ignoring real-world responsibility, and despises his middle-class mentality. Meanwhile, Jagadish faces his own downfall. Manipulated by selfish college friends, he hacks into the university's system to retrieve exam papers. When one of the boys is caught, he betrays Jagadish to save himself. The scandal leads to Jagadish's expulsion and public disgrace. Om, already on the edge, breaks down and asks Jagadish to leave the house, further fracturing the family. Om, Ayesha, their five-year-old son, and Saraswati move into a small flat. The loss of the house is especially painful for Saraswati, who had longed to spend her final years surrounded by the memories of her late husband. With his standing in the music industry destroyed, Om seeks help in the music world. He turns to Ram Prasad (RP) - a former lift man Om once discovered and transformed into a musical sensation. But RP, now arrogant with success, refuses to help. Desperate, Om reaches out to KK, a disgraced singer whom he had replaced with RP for plagiarizing other artists' work. Despite their history, KK agrees to join Om, seeing his sincerity and broken spirit. Om also meets a notorious video pirate who used to illegally copy music videos, named Rahman. Touched by Om's decency - even in defeat - Rahman reforms and joins Om's new venture as an executive. Together, the three form a new music label named Saraswati. Built on second chances and raw talent, the label slowly rises. KK stages a massive comeback, and artists begin leaving Shekhar's label to join Om's. Infuriated, Shekhar publicly mocks Om for having "failed brothers" - one who fled abroad, and another expelled in disgrace. Om, pushed too far, slaps Shekhar in anger. In retaliation, Shekhar vows not to redevelop the house but to auction it off - just to humiliate Om. Back in America, Jai builds and sells his dream car for $2 million. During this time, Neetu sees Jai's quiet strength and unwavering integrity, and realizes her own selfishness. With her father's encouragement - who finally stands up to his wife - she reconciles with Jai. They return to India - Neetu transformed, grounded, and ready to embrace the family. Jagadish, now working as a pizza delivery boy in Bangalore thanks to a friend who supports him and takes him in, happens to deliver food to Mr. Pillai, the CEO of a major tech firm. When Pillai's company is hacked, Jagadish offers a solution: an anti-hacking program he has been developing on his own. Pillai is impressed and agrees to buy it. As the ancestral home goes up for public auction, Om arrives with all the money he's saved. Jai joins him, contributing his share. They place their bid - but a mysterious higher bidder outbids them. Defeated and heartbroken, they prepare to walk away. But just then, Jagadish walks in, poised and confident. The three brothers embrace, reunited at last. The winning bidder steps forward - and reveals he was representing Mr. Pillai. As it turns out, Jagadish sold his anti-hacking program to Pillai on one condition: the price of the software would be the exact amount needed to reclaim the family home. Overwhelmed, Saraswati watches her sons standing together once more. Her dream is fulfilled - not through money, but through unity, sacrifice, and love Shekhar, present at the auction, watches in silence. For the first time, he concedes defeat without resentment. He turns to Tanya and tells her gently, "I love you." He accepts that Om was right all along: the power of love is stronger than the power of money. The Batras return to their ancestral home - restored, reunited, and renewed. Not just as individuals, but as a family.

An assassin is sent to kill the witness from testifying against the killers. In the process, the assassin falls in love with the witness. Assistant Commissioner of Police Jaidev Singh gets burned to death by a group of people leaving behind a witness who is an air-hostess called Neha Verma. The police manages to recover her Identification Card at the scene of crime where-by they call her in to name the assailants; she does manages to provide them with a name, Samrat Singhania, who happen to be the son of Mr. Singhania, the Minister within the state's ruling party. While in Mauritius, Neha happens to meet with a young man named Vicky and is in love with him. While in Mauritius, Neha meets and falls in love with a young man named Vicky, and they have a quiet wedding ceremony. After the marriage, Neha comes to know that Vicky is not really who is says he is, but a killer who has been hired to prevent her from testifying against the Singhanias. Vishwanath (Anupam Kher) is a multi-millionaire industrialist, living in a palatial house with his only child, a son named Vijay (Anil Kapoor). Vijay has recently returned to India, after studying in USA. Salim (Rakesh Bedi) is the driver and Badri (Sadhu Mehar) is the house servant. German (Satish Kaushik) is Vijay's childhood friend and partner. Vishwanath runs a factory that manufactures underground cables. The pampered Vijay has completed his education and now indulges in life's temptations to the extreme. Vijay tells Vishwanath that he does not want to join the family business and enter the same rat race that Vishwanath endured his entire life. Vijay says that he wants to enjoy life and his wealth. Vishwanath would like his son to get married and become responsible. Khairati Lal is manager in Vishwanath's factory who wants to marry his niece Anita (Mink Singh) to Vijay. Vishwanath starts searching for suitable brides for Vijay, but Vijay says that he wants a bride that he is compatible with and that could even take years to find. Vishwanath is livid at Vijay's insolence and starts eating sugar, which is expressly prohibited to him due to his diabetic condition. Vishwanath says that he sacrificed his entire life for Vijay and now Vijay wont even let him play with grandchildren, so he has no reason to live. Vijay agrees to marriage but puts a condition. Vijay wants the marriage to be on a contract basis for a year and, if he does not fall in love with his wife in that duration, the marriage will be annulled. Badri counsels Vishwanath to find a good girl and he is confident that with time, Vijay will fall in love and the condition of divorce will never be activated. Megha (Kajol) is Vishwanath's personal assistant in his office. She is a hardworking girl struggling to support her family. Vishwanath asks Megha to quit her job and marry his son, but she refuses when she hears Vijay's strange condition. Yashwant is the local loafer who wants to marry Megha, to take advantage of her financial misery. Megha's family is in dire financial straits and, so she has to reconsider Vishwanath's offer. In return for marrying Vijay, she asks for financial support for her family, which Vishwanath readily provides. Megha's family includes younger sister Maya (Gracy Singh), brother Sudhakar (Raju Shrestha), elder sister Manju (Sudha Chandran) and mother (Smita Jaykar). Manju is married to her husband (Adi Irani) but was returned home as she has a hole in her heart and needs expensive surgery. Vijay and Megha get married. After marriage, they live together and develop a friendly relationship. Megha works very hard, wholeheartedly cooperating, even kneeling on the steps of a temple to take care of Vijay when he is badly injured in an accident. Yet, at the end of the year, Vijay decides to call off the marriage, as agreed upon. Megha returns home very sad. After the separation, Vijay seems to be enjoying himself; but slowly and eventually, he starts to feel a longing for the presence of his devoted wife. Complications arise when Megha finds out that she is pregnant with Vijay's child. People in her neighborhood start to question her stay at her mother's house and the identity of the child's father. In order to support herself, Megha gets a job in a new company. To her surprise, when the company's managing director arrives, he turns out to be Vijay. Vijay buys the company by paying a huge amount to woo Megha. Vijay tries to convince Megha that he is a changed person now and wants her back. But, despite repeated convictions, Megha remains unconvinced as her faith in him is shattered. Vijay continues to try to convince her. But Megha does not miss any opportunity to show him that she does not care for him at all. Later, Megha and her family organize a 'Godh-Bharai' ceremony for the welfare of their upcoming child. Vishwanath and Vijay also attend the ceremony and give their gifts. Megha reveals Vijay to be her husband and tells all the guests about the marriage contract, insulting him. Vijay feels very bad. He explains that in the situation he is in, he can marry anyone and live happily. But he has made a mistake by entering into the marriage contract, he accepts this from his heart and even today he truly loves only Megha. This makes the situation clear to everyone. Vijay and his father come out after all the guests. Near the completion of her pregnancy, Megha learns that Khairati Lal (Shakti Kapoor) and Yashwant Kumar (Parmeet Sethi), who have been creating trouble for Vijay's company and had once attempted to kill Vijay, have escaped from jail. They are in search of Vijay, who had fired them from his father's company for fraud and forgery. Megha gets worried and tries to reach Vijay as soon as possible. On the way, she learns that this was a whole plan hatched by Vijay's friends to lure her towards her husband. In anger, Megha goes to insult Vijay. Meanwhile, Khairati Lal and Yashwant Kumar, who had come hiding behind Vijay in the office, actually attack Vijay suddenly and severely injure him by stabbing him in the stomach with a glass. But Megha thinks that Vijay is pretending to be injured. Megha turns around to leave after abusing Vijay, but Vijay turns towards her and screams in pain while pulling out a glass shard. Megha turns around and sees that his stomach is bleeding, and he is badly injured. Then she is convinced that Khairati and Yashwant have really attacked them. Megha runs towards him and slips and starts screaming in pain due to the fall as she is pregnant. Vijay ties a shirt on his stomach and gathers all his strength and takes Megha to the hospital. Their families also reach there. On one hand Vijay is being treated and on the other hand Megha gives birth. Megha gives birth to a healthy baby and wants to see Vijay first. Her bed is taken near Vijay's bed. Both of them meet happily. Vijay's father Vishwanath feels extremely happy by laying his grandson between them and shaking hands with all three as per his habit.

A thug terrorizes people in his area until he falls in love. Desperate to convince his love of his mended ways, he leaves the gang he has been a part of, inviting hostility. Advocate Anand Saxena lives in a small apartment with his wife, Kavita, who came from a wealthy family, and their young son. They live in a crime-prone area as Anand cannot afford to live in a better locality, due to his honesty and integrity. Almost daily they are mocked at, made fun of, and even have their motor-cycle burned at the hands of the goonda elements, led by Captain Dada, who owes allegiance to criminal don, Uncle Kalra. Then Captain Dada meets and falls in love with Anshu Mehra, and introduces himself as Vijay. He changes his character to impress Anshu, and even befriends Kavita. He takes Anshu to meet Kavita, and that's when Anand rips off the mask of respectability from Captain's face, with Anshu having her heart broken, and refusing to have anything to do with him again. He manages to convince Anshu that he is a changed person and she gets him to promise to give up all criminal activity, which he does. Uncle Kalra, however, does not see it his way, and asks his men to kill him at any cost, additionally he wants his son, Raj, to marry Anshu. Now Captain is on the run from Kalra's men, and also from the police as he finds out that Anshu is the niece of Police Commissioner Mehra, who will not leave any stone unturned to capture and kill Captain at any cost - and write off his death as a "Police Encounter". —rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com)

After the passing away of his son and Caucasian daughter-in-law, London-based widower Purshotam Agarwal brings up his granddaughter, Namrata, on his own. When she matures, he pressurizes her to get married to Tikamgarh-based Ranveer's son. She travels to India, and much to his chagrin refuses to get married to the boy of his choice, and instead brings back a wealthy male named Romi, who she claims is her fiancé.
