A revolutionary and his band take over a small Mexican town. The townspeople begin to take sides over whether to fight him, join forces with him or just try to get along with him. A ruthless, comical, fun-loving, romantic rebel general, General Jose Juan Reyes, preparing to make a stand against the Mexican-government army takes over a small Mexican town and imprisons the town leaders, including the father of fiery Maria Dolores Penafiel, who is among those citizens who take a stand against Reyes. Maria protests by slapping the face of Reyes, (the first of many times) and he is so enthralled by her spirit that he immediately declares she must become his wife. In response, she shows some more spirit, she sets off a firecracker under his horse. Reyes begins to soften and, with the aid of Father Sierra and Maria, who is about to marry her local suitor, he helps the town fight an influenza epidemic. He decides to retreat than stage a battle in the town against the advancing government troops. Maria is so stirred by the bugles of the retreating rebels, that she leaves her marriage ceremony and marches with Reyes and his ragged army across the desert into the sunset. A female Borgia is sent out to live up to the family name by killing someone, but falls in love with her intended victim. The tiny independent duchy of Ferrara is located between Casare Borgia's Rome and Venice, and Borgia has plans to conquer Venice via Ferrara. He murders his sister's husband and makes it appear that Alfonso D'Este of Ferrara was behind the killing. Jimmy goes to work with his uncle, the owner of a food factory. Before he gets there, he befriends an Irish family who happens to be his uncle's worst enemy because of their love for music and in-house band who constantly practices. Jimmy Haskell (James Stewart) closes his struggling music store and goes into business with his wealthy uncle, C.J. (Charles Winninger), who owns a health food business. C.J. hates music and has constant disputes with the McCorkle family, who run a boarding house across the alley from C.J.'s factory and play in Horace Heidt's (himself) band, which currently lives in the boarding house. When Jimmy unintentionally throws a tomato at C.J. during a dispute, it impresses the McCorkles and the band, who don't know that Jimmy is related to C.J. Molly McCorkle (Paulette Goddard) quickly falls for Jimmy. When Jimmy must substitute for C.J. on his radio program, he is confronted by Horace and Molly's brother, Willie (Dick Hogan). Jimmy admits to his identity but works with Horace and Willie to trick C.J. into taking an extended vacation by making C.J. think only he can hear music being played by the band from a hidden location. Jimmy uses the opportunity to have the band play on the radio program to great success, but Molly learns Jimmy's identity and angrily states on air that the radio show will give away $1,000 every week. During World War I, an anonymous private, (Chaplin) fighting in the army of Tomania, effects the valiant rescue of an officer named Schultz, but suffers loss of memory when the plane in which they are flying crashes into a tree. The little soldier is sent to a hospital where he remains for the next 20 years, unaware of the changes that are taking place around him. He does not know, for instance, that Hynkel (also played by Chaplin) has become Dictator of Tomania, and is ruthlessly persecuting the jews with the help of his two ministers, Garbitsch and Herring. Dismissed at last from the hospital, the amnesia victim returns to his barber-shop in the Ghetto, expecting to find everything as he left it 20 years before, because he does not realize that he has been away for so long. He is surprised and hurt, therefore, when Hynkel`s storm-troopers smash his store windows and make his new life miserable. He finds a friend in Hannah, a beautiful daughter of the Ghetto, and before long their friendship ripens into love. For a while they enjoy comparative peace firstly when Schultz, who has risen to a position of prominence in the new regime, recognizes the barber as his friend and orders the storm troopers to leave him alone, and secondly when Hynkel needs a financial loan from a Jewish financier and ceases temporarily his persecution of the Jews. The financier refuses the loan, so Hynkel takes up his antisemitic activities again, with a vengeance. He is planning an invasion of the neighboring country of Osterlich, and when Schultz questions the judgement of this move, the Dictator condemns him to a concentration camp. Schultz manages to escape to the ghetto, where he attempts to incite a revolution against the government. But before he can carry out this plan he and the barber are both captured and interned in prison camp. Pursuing his project of invading Osterlich, Hynkel invites to his palace Napaloni, Dictator of Bacteria, and after a few comic misunderstandings is able to enlist him as an ally. The invasion is successfully completed and Hannah, who has fled with her friends to Osterlich, again finds herself under the domination of Hynkel`s cruel regime. While The Great Dictator is celebrating his latest conquest by taking a vacation in the country, Schultz and the barber escape from the concentration camp. In the search that follows, Hynkel is arrested by his own soldiers, who think he is the barber, and Schultz sees that the barber is mistaken for the Dictator. Realising the importance of his new position the barber carries out the masquerade and in a speech before the assembled crowds of Tomania, denounces everything that Hynkel stands for and makes a rousing plea for democracy.
