Enzo and his wife Laura started the automobile company called Auto Construzioni Ferrari in 1947, in the aftermath of the 2nd world war. In the summer of 1957, Italian entrepreneur Enzo Ferrari (Adam Driver) prepares his racing team for the Mille Miglia, an open road, endurance-based race lasting one thousand miles. Grappling with both domestic and professional crises, Ferrari and his estranged wife, Laura (Penelope Cruz), grieve for their only son, Dino, who died a year prior. While he has kept Laura from learning of his infidelities, Ferrari's mistress, Lina Lardi (Shailene Woodley), pressures him to grant their illegitimate son, Piero (Giuseppe Festinese), the Ferrari name as his confirmation nears. Enzo wants to hire the Maserati driver Jean Behra (Derek Hill) for the upcoming racing season. Enzo is late arriving at the train station due to his visit to Lina and misses him. Behra has announced his intention to challenge the world record held by Ferrari driver Eugenio Castellotti (Marino Franchitti). Enzo is shown to be very connected to his son Alfredo/Dino who died at the age of 24. Enzo visits Alfredo's grave from time to time. Enzo admits to Dino's grave that Laura is not the person anymore whom he fell in love with. Enzo's mother Adalgisa (Daniela Piperno) says that she lost Enzo's brother Alfredo in WW2 and believes that she lost the wrong son. Behra breaks Ferrari's speed record, and Eugenio is too slow to be able to take it back. A race car driver Alfonso De Portago approaches Enzo for a job at the tracks, where Eugenio was struggling with the speed. Eugenio has an accident and dies on the tracks. He is survived by his fiance Cecilia Manzini (Valentina Belle). Ferrari is blamed by the media for his terrible driver safety record. Ferrari blames Eugenio's mother who wanted him to marry a woman of high class, which put a lot of weight on his shoulders and distracted him. Laura typically manages the money side of the business. Laura stops Eugenio's paychecks, but Enzo wants Laura to give $25,000 to Cecilia so she can buy a house. Meanwhile, in the wake of the groundbreaking development of the team's Formula One car, Ferrari's manufacturing company is suffering from severe financial hemorrhaging. Ferrari's accountant Giacomo Cuoghi (Giuseppe Bonifati) says that Enzo is not making enough production cars to pay for the racing business. Cuoghi asks Enzo to bring on a financial partner to increase production from 98 cars to 400 cars per year. In order to sell 400 cars, they need to win at the Mille Miglia. Enzo hires Alfonso De Portago after watching him race on the tracks. Enzo asks him to keep his romantic conquests away from the tracks as it takes the media focus away from his cars. De Portago is dating actress Linda Christian (Sarah Gadon). Carlo Chiti (Michele Savoia) is Enzo's engineer. Other Ferrari drivers are Peter Collins (Jack O'Connell), Piero Taruffi and Wolfgang Von Trips (Wyatt Carnell). Sergio Scaglietti (Lino Musella) is the car designer. Faced with no other choice, Ferrari must merge with a sister company to continue doing business. However, Laura owns half of Ferrari's shares, and in order to move forward on deals, Enzo must convince Laura to sign the entirety of the company over to him. A resentful Laura demands a check for $500,000, which will bankrupt the company if she cashes it. Laura visits the bank to get a check for Cecilia. The arrangement is that Laura will own the property, while Cecilia will have the rights to stay rent free. The banker mistakenly reveals that Enzo has a similar arrangement for another property in Castelvetro. Laura confirms her suspicions that Enzo has been having an affair after finding where Lina and Piero live in the countryside outside Modena. Enzo agrees to write the check and trust her to wait to cash it till a deal for the future of the company is made. Enzo makes a deal with reporter Gino Rancati (Andrea Dolente) to plant a story that Enzo is not negotiating a partnership with Ford for the future of Ferrari. Laura pressures the bank to give her details of the payments made to Lina Lardi. When confronted, Enzo admits that the boy is his. Laura blames Enzo of ignoring his own son Alfredo and causing his death. Enzo is devastated at the allegation and says that he did everything in his power to save Alfredo. As the Mille Miglia commences in Brescia, Ferrari is in direct competition with Maserati owned by Adolfo Orsi (Domenico Fortunato). The winning team gets to survive as both companies need cash infusion, but only the winner will get it. Ferrari encourages his drivers to remain ahead of the competition. Ferrari has 5 cars in the race, while Maserati has 2 cars driven by Behra and Stirling Moss (Ben Collins). Moss is out in the first leg of the race as his brake pedal falls off. Gianni Agnelli (Tommaso Basili), the owner of Fiat, picks up Ferrari's planted story about negotiations with Ford and calls Enzo. Gianni offers a partnership to Ferrari to keep the company ownership in Italy as he considers Ferrari a national treasure. Behra is run off the road by De Portago and now he is in the lead for the race. With both Maserati's drivers out, it is Ferrari's race as all of his drivers are in the top slots. So, now the Ferrari drivers start competing among themselves. Enzo refuses to order them to hold their positions as he knows that the drivers will not listen. During a pit-stop in Rome, Enzo's newest addition to the team, Alfonso De Portago (Gabriel Leone), refuses to change tires in order to stay in the lead; he suffers a blowout and loses control of the vehicle, which veers off the road, killing De Portago, his navigator, and nine onlookers in the resulting crash, including children. Another of Ferrari's drivers, the veteran Taruffi (Patrick Dempsey), completes the round trip to Brescia and wins the race. Ferrari is blamed by the media for De Portago's lethal accident, and Laura cashes her check to provide bribe money for journalists. She signs over the full rights to the company, requesting that in return, Enzo refrain from giving Piero the Ferrari name until after her death. Enzo agrees, and later brings Piero to his half-brother's grave. Piero joined Ferrari as Engineer when he was 19 years old. Enzo was cleared of all charges from the accident during Mille Miglia. Laura died in 1978. Enzo and Lina lived together in Modena. Piero is now Vice Chairman at Ferrari.

Between 1983 and 1987, Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar (Javier Bardem) had a romantic relationship with the journalist and the television presenter, Virginia Vallejo (Penélope Cruz). Naples Ranch, Colombia, 1981. Pablo lives in a palatial property with his wife Maria Victoria Henao (Julieth Restrepo). Pablo orders a hired gun to attack a Govt building to find a file on him that connects him to the murder of a dozen agents. Pablo pays him USD 30,000 for the hit. Virgina arrives by chartered plane for a huge party that Pablo is throwing at his house. The plane lands in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by men with guns. She thinks she is being kidnapped. Virginia notices the social hierarchy. The soldiers are at the bottom, handling security and operations. Above them, are the cream, the artists, businessmen, soccer players, journalists, models. Pablo has made a lot of money in a short amount of time and Virgina is curious, how. At the top, are the kings of the hill. In exchange they ask for guarantees to repeal the treaty with the US. Maria asks Pablo to end it with Virginia and he promises. Pablo continues to have sex with Virginia. Pablo's party wins the elections, and he reaches the Columbian Congress in 1982. Pablo sends Virginia to US with a suitcase full of money to buy herself a new wardrobe for her TV show. Shepard meets Virginia after waiting in her hotel lobby for her to arrive. Virginia tells Shepard that US is not worried about the drugs coming in, but they are more worried about the cash flowing out of the US. Shepard guesses that Virginia is involved with Pablo. Meanwhile in Columbia, the minister of justice calls a special session to revoke the election of Pablo to Congress. Pablo questions the justice minister about the source of funds for his campaign and says he will give solid proof proving the corruption. Maria wants Pablo to resign as the President backs the minister (as even the President has stuff to hide). The justice minister leaks a story on Pablo's involvement in the murder of police officers. The hired gun spent the money on women and never did the job. He is put to death in the most brutal manner possible. Pablo gets all the cartels to deposit 10 MM pesos each and forms a company to kill the justice minister (this way they are all guilty). Pablo hires the Sicarios to assassinate the minister. The Sicarios are boys from the slums who are trained to be hit-men. They are prepared to die as the hit gives their family more money than they could earn in a lifetime. The minister is killed. The govt declares war on the mafia and the cartels relocate to Panama in 1984. This is where they keep the money. Columbia sends an ex-President to negotiate with the cartels. Pablo offers to pay the external debt of $12 Bn and 80% of income to be brought to Columbia for investments, in exchange for amnesty against extradition. Columbian govt is not willing negotiate the extradition as they are under pressure from North Americans. Govt offers reward of 1000 MM Pesos for Pablo. Pablo arms the slums and offers hard USD currency for every dead cop (2k for every beat cop, up to $50K for every dead major). The civil war is on. Bring the badge and get paid. Law sets its own exchange rate in the slums. 10 executions for each dead police officer. The Govt creates a special unit Search Bloc, to hunt Pablo. Shepard meets the Columbian officials and secures permission to hunt for the cartel members in Columbia, rather than wait for the extradition in US. Virginia is fired from her job due to her association with Pablo. Shepard meets Virginia in Columbia and offers protection in exchange for cooperation. Virginia is seen having this meeting with Shepard. Virginia begs Pablo to leave her alone. By now Pablo was having sex with teenage girls from poor neighborhoods, handed over to him for a few thousand pesos. This made it very easy for the Search Bloc to track down Pablo, as they now had many more informants. Pablo releases birds into the air to crash the helicopters to buy time to escape. As Pablo goes into hiding, the Cali cartel moves into Florida. One by one his main men are picked off. By 1989, Pablo has lost his strongest men and now he can only run. Virginia moves to Miami to host a TV show. Pablo declares all-out war against the government. Bogota airport is closed after a plane is shot down midair. Bombs go off all over Bogota. The country begs the Government to give Pablo what he wants. 2 US citizens were killed on the flight, and Shepard uses this to authorize military ops in Columbia to guarantee safety of US citizens. Pablo surrenders but is imprisoned in a prison that he built for himself in 1991. La Catedral, Medellin. Pablo builds a home for himself and lives in luxury. The business stabilizes and starts growing again. Pablo imposes protection taxes of 20% on his territories, while the Cali were only charging 5%. Virginia loses her ad contracts and has to sell her home to pay her debts. She moves into a small apartment. She meets Pablo at the prison to understand if she is safe. Virginia asks for protection and for $80K to go to Europe. Pablo refuses her and calls her a slut. Palo murders 2 business partners (who were stealing from Pablo) inside the prison. The news reaches the media, and this makes the Government an accomplice. They decide to move Pablo to a military prison. Pablo escapes before that. Government releases Narcos willing to fight Pablo in exchange for clearing their records. The Narcos, the search Bloc, DEA and FBI make a ruthless hunting party. Men are killed for working for Pablo. Bodies appear all over Medellin. Anyone ever close to him, is a target. Virginia is also attacked but manages to escape alive. Virginia reaches Shepard and informs him that Pablo is trying to get his family out of Columbia. Once they are out, he will wage war against the country again. Shepard lobbies hard with the US govt to deny entry to Pablo's family in Germany. They are returned back to Bogota and escorted by the military to a strong hold. They are held as bait for Pablo to come and mount a rescue. Pablo calls Maria and the agencies use the call to triangulate his position. Dec 1993. He is found and gunned out at his hideout while he is talking to his family. Virginia agrees to testify before a judge.

In 1865, at the conclusion of the American Civil War, Richmond, Virginia is in ruins. The CSS Texas, captained by Mason Tombs (Robert Cavanah), is loaded with the last of the Confederacy's gold to keep it from Union forces. It then disappears into the Atlantic as it escapes the approaching Union army. The Union army unleashes its cannons on the CSS Texas, but the cannon shells simply bounce off the thick armor of the ship, which covers the entire ship from top to bottom. In the present day, in 1990s, World Health Organization doctors Eva Rojas (Penelope Cruz) and Frank Hopper (Glynn Turman) are investigating a disease that is spreading across Mali, Africa. Eva and Hopper are stationed in Laos, Nigeria, and find evidence that people who show symptoms of the plague have traveled to Mali recently. Eva tries convincing Hopper that they need to go to Mali to find the source of this outbreak. In Mali, there is a civil war between dictator General Kazim and the Tuareg people. Hopper says that WHO won't be willing to lose any more staff to the civil war in Mali. Eva investigates more cases in Lagos and goes to a lighthouse, where she finds the dead father of one of the victims she examined before. The father had also been to Mali. Assassins attempt to murder Eva, but she is rescued by Dirk Pitt (Matthew McConaughey), from National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA), who was working nearby. The assassins run away with Eva's medical kit with all the samples she had gathered so far. Dirk is a famous person who is known to hunt down missing battleships, and the CSS Texas is one of the ships on his list. Dirk gets a call from a dealer in Nigeria. He sells Dirk a gold Confederate States of America coin, one of supposedly only five in existence, which was found in the Niger River. Dirk believes that this is a clue to the long-lost Texas. He convinces his boss, retired admiral James Sandecker (William H. Macy), to let him, Al Giordino (Steve Zahn), and Rudi Gunn (Rainn Wilson), from NUMA, go to Mali to search for the CSS Texas. Sandecker leads a private organization and partners with Governments to explore undersea wrecks and restore national treasures to museums. Dirk borrows his boss Sandecker's yacht to search for it. They give Eva and Hopper a ride, so that they can continue their investigation, for the WHO. While taking water samples they discover red algae, which puzzles them as it is not usually found in fresh water. Businessman Yves Massarde (Lambert Wilson) and dictator General Kazim (Lennie James), who controls half of civil war-torn Mali, try to stop the doctors from discovering the source of "plague". Kazim sends men to kill them and the NUMA team, not realizing their CIA and Navy background. Kazim sends men to attack the yacht. Dirk, Al, and Rudi survive, but the yacht is destroyed. Rudi tries to get out of the country to get help while Dirk and Al go to rescue the doctors. Kazim's men track down the doctors and kill Hopper. Dirk and Al rescue Eva. As they are leaving Mali, they are captured by the Tuareg insurgents. Tuareg who are fighting the civil war. The Tuaregs leader, Modibo (Paulin Fudouop), shows Eva his people, who are dying. After taking samples, she finds out water contains toxins, and there is no treatment available. By accident, Al stumbles into a cave with a painting showing the ironclad Texas. Dirk believes that the Texas became stranded when the river water dried up after a storm and that the same river that carried the Texas now runs underground, spreading the contamination. They start to follow the dry riverbed and work their way to the border. Dirk still hopes to find the ironclad along the way. Their plans are interrupted when they stumble upon the solar detoxification plant owned by Massarde and realize that it is the source of the contamination. Rudi and Sandecker have already deduced that chemicals are creating the red algae and seeping slowly towards the ocean, where they will expand rapidly upon entering salt water and kill ocean life worldwide. But they can't get any government help to intervene during a civil war in a sovereign country. However, Massarde and Zakara capture them, keep Eva, and send Dirk and Al in a truck to Kazim. They escape in the middle of the desert. Rebuilding a plane wreck into a land yacht, they leave the desert. They contact Sandecker, who warns them that Kazim and his troops are after them. Dirk and Al enlist Modibo's aid to return to the plant and rescue Eva. He helps them infiltrate the plant and rescue his people who are working there as slaves. Rather than risk discovery, Massarde plans to destroy the plant, making it almost impossible to stop the contamination. Al goes to defuse the bombs while Dirk tries to head off Massarde and save Eva. Massarde escapes. Dirk, Eva, and Al get away from the plant in a stolen Avions Voisin C-28 that was originally owned by Kazim but are strafed by Kazim in a helicopter gunship. A series of explosions along the dry riverbed reveals the Texas, right where the cave painting showed it to be. They take cover inside, but Kazim's helicopter's armor piercing ammunition is too much for the old ironclad's armor. They manage to fight back with the old cannon and destroy Kazim's gunship, just as Modibo arrives with Tuareg reinforcements. In the end the contamination is dealt with, and Sandecker is offered a deal to do some covert work, while the government in a serendipitous manner funds NUMA, which he accepts, tentatively. Massarde, busy eating with a businessman, does not notice that the waiter who serves him water (which he drinks) served only him and disappeared with the rest of the bottle. The Texas gold, which belongs to the CSA - Confederate States of America, is left with Modibo's people. It is implied that Massarde is poisoned by Carl, an undercover US agent, while Dirk and Eva start a relationship.

Psychiatrist Dr. Miranda Grey (Halle Berry) works at a mental hospital and has a car accident after trying to avoid a girl (Kathleen Mackey) on a road during a stormy night, while driving back home. She rushes to try to help the girl. The girl turns out to in fact be a ghost, and possesses Miranda's body by burning her after she extends her hand to the girl. Miranda loses consciousness. Miranda next wakes up in the very hospital she works for, but as a patient treated by her co-worker, Dr. Pete Graham (Robert Downey, Jr.). Drugged and confused, she remembers nothing of what happened after the car accident. To her horror, she learns that her husband Douglas (Charles S. Dutton) was brutally murdered and that she is the primary suspect. While Miranda copes with her new life in the hospital, the ghost uses her body to carry out messages (most noticeably, she carves the words "not alone" into Miranda's arm) which leads her former colleagues to believe Miranda is suicidal and is inflicting the wounds on herself. Meanwhile, Miranda bonds with fellow inmate (and former patient) Chloe Sava (Penélope Cruz). Several times in sessions, Chloe had claimed that she'd been raped while in the hospital, but Miranda had always attributed these stories to mental illness. One night, the door to Miranda's room in the hospital is opened by the ghost that has been haunting her. When she passes Chloe's room in the hospital, she can hear the rape occurring and momentarily sees a man's chest pressed against the window. The man's chest bears a tattoo of an Anima Sola. Miranda realizes that Chloe was not making up these stories, and when she sees Chloe the next day, she apologizes, and the two embrace. Chloe warns Miranda her attacker said he was going to target Miranda next. Miranda begins regaining some of her memories bit by bit, and slowly comes to remember herself killing her husband. She realizes that the ghost had used her body to murder Douglas, thus making Miranda the patsy for his murder. This is why all of the physical evidence points to Miranda. Miranda escapes the hospital, having recognized the girl as a ghost. Seeking clues to the mystery of why she killed her husband, she goes to a farmhouse in Willow Creek, Rhode Island. In the cellar of the barn she discovers a room containing a blood-stained bed, what appears to be a box containing drugs, restraints, and video equipment. She watches the tape that is still in the camera and the viewer hears a woman screaming as if tortured or raped. In the final seconds of the video, Douglas walks into the shot, covers a woman's lifeless body on the bed with a sheet, and winks at the camera. At this point, police arrive, and one officer comes closer to Miranda and draws a gun on her while she is holding a knife to him. Miranda backs up to a stair case, and all of a sudden an injured, frantically screaming girl grabs hold of her from the adjoining crawlspace. The police release the girl, and Miranda is taken to jail. While she is in jail, Sheriff Ryan (John Carroll Lynch), who was Douglas' closest friend, talks to Miranda, and quizzes her on how she knew all these things. He does not believe her claim that ghosts told her everything, and asks her what sort of person the accomplice would be. Miranda uses her experience as a psychiatrist to give a psychological profile, and as she does so realizes that Ryan fits the profile perfectly. He attacks Miranda and in the fight reveals his tattoo an Anima Sola. Miranda kills the sheriff in an act of self-defense, with the help of the ghost. Meanwhile, Miranda sees that Pete just comes here to try to save her (as Pete had also discovered what she said were true). Miranda is next seen walking with Chloe on a city sidewalk discussing how each helped the other come to terms with their experiences. Miranda claims to be free of the ghost's influence and sends Chloe off in a taxi. Miranda then sees a young boy standing in the middle of the road who appears as though he is about to be struck by a fire truck. Miranda yells for the boy to move, but after the fire truck passes through the boy without harming him she realizes he was only a ghost. As Miranda walks away, a poster with the words "Have you seen Tim?" and a picture of the same boy is shown taped to a pole next to the street on which Miranda is walking.

When George is ten years old, Fred files for bankruptcy and loses everything, but tries to make George realize that money is not important. As an adult, George (Johnny Depp) moves to Los Angeles with his friend "Tuna" (Ethan Suplee); they meet Barbara (Franka Potente), an airline stewardess, who introduces them to Derek Foreal (Paul Reubens), a marijuana dealer. With Derek's help, George and Tuna make a lot of money by retailing pot on the beaches. Kevin Dulli (Max Perlich), a college student back in Boston, visits them and tells them of the enormous market-and demand-for pot in Boston. With Barbara's help, they start bringing the drugs to Boston (Barbara starts by taking 25 pounds of pot to Boston per day on her flights, as her bags are not checked). The demand for the "good pot" skyrockets. As the demand grows, they decide to start buying the drugs directly from Mexico with the help of Santiago Sanchez (Tony Amendola), a Mexican drug lord. But two years later, George is caught in Chicago trying to import 660 pounds of marijuana and is sentenced to two years. After unsuccessfully trying to plead his innocence (by reciting the lyrics of Bob Dylan's "Pretty Boy Floyd (Woody Guthrie)") and insisting that he did no more than "cross an imaginary line with a bunch of plants"), George skips bail to take care of Barbara, who is suffering from, and eventually succumbs to, cancer. Her death marks the disbanding of the group of friends; even his friend, Tuna, flees their vacation home in Mexico and is never seen again. While hiding from the authorities, George visits his parents back in New England. While he is having a heart-to-heart talk with his father, George's mother calls the police, who come and arrest him. George is now sentenced to 26 months in a federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut. His cellmate Diego Delgado (Jordi Molla) has contacts in the Medellín cocaine cartel and convinces George to help him go into business. Upon his release from prison, George violates his parole conditions and heads down to Cartagena, Colombia to meet up with Diego. They meet with cartel officer Cesar Rosa to negotiate the terms for smuggling 15 kilograms (33 lb) to establish "good faith". As the smuggling operation grows, Diego gets arrested, leaving George to find a way to sell 50 kg (110 pounds) and get the money in time. George reconnects with Derek in California, and the two successfully sell all 50 kg in 36 hours, amassing a $1.35 million profit. George is then whisked off to Medellín, Colombia, where he finally meets the group's leader, Pablo Escobar (Cliff Curtis), who agrees to go into business with them. With the help of main middleman Derek, the pair becomes Escobar's top US importer. At Diego's wedding, George meets Cesar's fiance Mirtha (Penélope Cruz) and marries her. However, Diego resents George for keeping Derek's identity secret and pressures George to reveal his connection. George eventually discovers that Diego has betrayed him by cutting him out of the connection with Derek. Inspired by the birth of his daughter and chastened by a subsequent drug-related heart attack, George severs his relationship with the cartel and vows to leave the drug business forever. All goes well with George's newfound civilian life for five years, until Mirtha organizes a 38th birthday party for him. Many of his former drug associates attend, including Derek, who reveals that Diego eventually cut him out as well. The FBI and DEA raid the party and arrest George. Following George's conviction, he becomes a fugitive. Meanwhile, his bank account-heretofore under Manuel Noriega's protection in Panama-is seized. One night, he and Mirtha get into a fight while driving. They are pulled over by police and Mirtha tells them Jung is a fugitive and has stashed a kilogram of cocaine in his trunk. He is sent to jail for three years, during which time Mirtha divorces him and takes custody of their nine-year-old daughter, Kristina "Sunshine" Jung (Emma Roberts). Upon his release, George finds himself struggling to keep his relationship with his daughter on good terms. George promises Kristina a vacation in California and seeks one last deal to garner enough money for the trip. George completes a deal with former accomplices but learns too late that the deal had been set up by the FBI and DEA, with Dulli and Derek having leaked the nature and location of the action in exchange for pardons for their involvement in his prior actions. George is sentenced to 60 years at Otisville Correctional Facility in upstate New York. He explains in the end that neither the sentence nor the betrayal bothered him, but that he can never forgive himself for having to break a promise to his daughter. While in prison, George requests a furlough to see his dying father, Fred. His unforgiving mother denies the request, saying a visit would only upset Fred. George is given a tape recorder to record a final message to his father. In the message, George recounts his memories of working with his father, his run-ins with the law, and finally, too late, his understanding of what Fred meant when he said that money is not "real". The film closes with George as an old man in prison, imagining that his daughter (Jaime King) finally comes to visit him. She slowly fades away as a guard calls for George. The film concludes with notes indicating that Jung's sentence will not expire until 2015, and that his daughter has yet to visit him. The film's final image is a photograph of the actual George Jung.

Cage starts as Captain Antonio Corelli, an Italian officer whose company of soldiers is sent to Cephallonia, a beautiful Greek island untouched by war. A free spirit with a passion for music and romance, Corelli is enchanted by Cephallonia and its people -- especially Pelagia (Cruz), the gorgeous, proud daughter of the island's doctor (John Hurt). Engaged to a local fisherman (Christian Bale), Pelagia resists Corelli's attentions, but the kind and charming captain weakens for her defenses. Surrendering their hearts, Corelli and Pelagia begin a heated affair. But before their love can grow, the war crashes on Cephallonia's shores, forcing Corelli and Pelagia to make dangerous sacrifices for country and homeand risk losing each other forever.

David Aames (Tom Cruise) drives to work, he finds the streets of New York strangely deserted at rush hour. With growing unease he drives to Times Square and finds the entire city abandoned. He then awakens in his bedroom once again to realize he's only been having a vivid dream. Cut to: David in a jail cell describing a dream to Dr. Curtis McCabe (Kurt Russell), a psychologist who has been assigned to him. David has been charged with a murder he cannot remember, and he wears a mysterious pale mask. He and Dr. McCabe discuss the events that led to his eventual incarceration. Following the death of David's father, he was given 51% ownership of his father's publishing company. The rest of the company is owned by a board of directors that David disparagingly calls the "Seven Dwarfs." Each of them believed that he was next in line to take over the company after David's father died. David can have anything his heart desires, and nothing is beyond him. On the night of his birthday party which also includes a conversation with a drunken Thomas Tipp (Timothy Spall), the company attorney and an old friend of David's father, David considered firing Thomas for what he believes is his incompetence as an attorney, but he has a change of heart when Thomas makes a sad confession. David's best friend, Brian Shelby (Jason Lee), brings with him a girl named Sofia Serrano (Penelope Cruz) whom he just met at the library. Almost instantly, David and Sofia flirt with each other, almost completely ignoring Brian. However, Julianna Gianni (Cameron Diaz), a regular bed partner for whom David has no deep feelings, crashes his party. She stays distant but keeps a close eye on him the entire night. Once David realizes Julianna is there, he asks Sofia to pretend to engage in a deep conversation with him so that Julianna won't come near him. David and Sofia end up hitting it off. David walks Sofia back to her place, where they stay up all night talking. The next morning as David is getting ready to drive to work, Julianna drives up beside him asking how his night with Sofia was. Julianna makes David feel guilty about ignoring her and convinces him to get into her car. It quickly becomes apparent that she is obsessed with David. She starts driving recklessly, speeding through busy city streets, all the while insisting that she's deeply in love with him and berating him for treating her so casually. Fearing for their safety, he tries to get her to stop the car by telling her that he loves her. She drives the car off a bridge in an attempt to kill them both. Julianna did not survive the crash. David did, however, although his face and right arm are mangled, and he suffers blinding headaches due to the metal pieces holding his skull together. He spends a long time in isolation before deciding to take back control of his company and see Sofia again. She appears hesitant to be around him, and when they go on a date she brings Brian along. The date is a disaster as David drinks too much and makes Sofia increasingly uneasy around him. The three part ways at the end of the night, and David ends up passing out on a sidewalk. It is morning when Sofia wakes him up at that same exact spot and tells him that she will stay with him if he can get his act together. From that moment on, David's life is turned around. His team of plastic surgeons is able to restore his face and he finds his soul mate in Sofia. David's new-found happiness is short-lived, however, when he begins hallucinating. He looks in the mirror to see his face once again disfigured. A mysterious man (Noah Taylor) turns up wherever he goes and tells David that he has the power to control the world. And one night he goes to bed with Sofia and wakes up to find himself with Julianna, who insists she really is Sofia. He grows violent, convinced that Julianna is alive and playing games with him. He is arrested and told by Tipp that he severely beat Sofia, but Tipp will have the case thrown out. Tipp shows David photos of Julianna with a bruised face, but everybody, including his best friend Brian, tells him that it was Sofia he attacked. David breaks into Sofia's apartment and finds that every photo he'd seen of Sofia is now of Julianna. Julianna attacks him thinking he's an intruder but then apologizes while still insisting she is Sofia. She leaves the room and the actual Sofia returns in her place as if nothing unusual had happened. They begin to make love but while they are in the middle of the act he finds that he is making love to Julianna. In a fit of panic he suffocates her and then discovers he has just killed Sofia. When David is finished telling Dr. McCabe his story he still can't bring himself to believe that he killed anybody. Dr. McCabe, frustrated by David's failure to tell him anything meaningful that might help his case, tells him that he can no longer help David and will try to argue for "temporary derangement". This odd turn of legalistic phrase is just one of many clues that in this version of David's world all is not what it seems. As Dr. McCabe leaves, David sees an infomercial for a cryonics company called "Life Extension." This infomercial involving a dog that has been frozen and brought back to life has appeared at several points throughout the film. David is entranced by the commercial, and McCabe sees that there may be a connection between Life Extension and David's amnesia. Escorted by Dr. McCabe and the police, David visits Life Extension and realizes that he had signed on as a client. He had opted for an extra feature called the Lucid Dream. This allows cryogenically-frozen, clinically dead clients to experience an unending custom-made dream life with no memory of their physical death. David realizes that he is now living in the Lucid Dream and that the mysterious man is his "Technical Support." The Support Technician explains that the Lucid Dream was "spliced" into his memories at the point where he passed out on the sidewalk after his night out with Sofia and Brian. But the dream went awry and turned into a nightmare. Since nothing he experienced after the splice was real David realizes that he never murdered anybody. Dr. McCabe tells him that the guilt he felt for the way he treated Julianna may have caused his subconscious to merge Julianna and Sofia. But it turns out that Dr. McCabe isn't real either; he's just a character David created in his dream to be the father figure he always wanted. Most curious is the fact that Dr. McCabe seems to believe that he himself is real and only reluctantly comes to accept the truth (he had previously mentioned that he was going out with his two daughters for dinner after a session with David, but when The Support Technician asks him "What are their [your daughters'] names, Dr. McCabe has no response). Tech Support tells David that in reality, he never saw Sofia again, and that Thomas Tipp, the attorney that David considered firing in the beginning, had saved the company for David and helped him regain control from the board of directors. But David, suffering constant pain and depression following his disfigurement, committed suicide. In the end, technical support reveals an upgrade to the software which allows David to either be reinserted into the lucid dream with no memory of the nightmare portion or to be awakened in the present time (which is 150 years after he was frozen) and live in the real world with a restored body. David chooses to be awakened in this future present realizing that everyone he ever knew will be long dead and his wealth will be worth far less. After one last lucid-dream rooftop exchange with Sofia in which she vows to "find you again" he leaps off the skyscraper. Multiple memory-images cascade frenetically through his mind as he falls. The final shot is of a brief whiteout (rather than the blackout) accompanied by the sound of a woman's voice telling him to "open your eyes" and an extreme closeup of a single human eye opening and staring into the camera.

She befriends 5 Irishwomen. This is the story of a young Irish woman who comes to Spain to escape from the pressures she feels about her impending marriage to a political activist in Ireland. But in Spain in the 1930's, taking a job of governess in a wealthy family, she finds the same kinds of political unrest. In fact, it isn't long before she finds herself attracted to a married man who is similarly involved in the struggle against fascism and Franco.
