In 2011, a deadly pathogenic virus killed 99 percent of the Earth's population, forcing the survivors to regroup and scatter across the Earth. A scientist named Trevor Goodchild developed a cure to the virus. Four centuries later, in 2415, the remaining five million humans inhabit Bregna, a dystopian walled futuristic city-state, which is ruled by a congress of scientists. Although Bregna is largely an idyllic place in the destroyed Earth, people routinely disappear, and the population is plagued by nightmares. The Goodchild dynasty has ruled Bregna for 400 years. But now, rebels have emerged to challenge the Goodchild regime. The Goodchild regime provides for the city, till they relinquish their freedom and agree to live quietly in a gilded cage. Relical, the dirigible, floats above the city to remind the people of what they have survived. The city is surrounded by an impregnable wall and citizens are not allowed to go beyond. A skilled warrior, named Aeon Flux (Charlize Theron), is a member of the Monicans, an underground rebel organization who communicate through telepathy-enabling technology and are led by the Handler (Frances McDormand). After a mission to destroy a surveillance station, Aeon comes home to find her sister Una (Amelia Warner) has been mistaken for a Monican and killed. Una was married to her husband Claudius (Nikolai Kinski). Aeon feels her life has been stolen from her and now she dedicates her life to her mission. Aeon is sent on a mission to kill the government's leader, Trevor Goodchild (Marton Csokas). Goodchild is addressing the congress of scientists at the citadel. Aeon has to cross the frontier garden and then cross a confusing maze inside the citadel. Aeon is told that Goodchild will be at the Forum. Sithandra accompanies Aeon for the mission, who has hands instead of feet. The Frontier Garden is defended by many autonomous defense systems, such as self-aiming darts and razor blades concealed in grass. At the Forum, Trevor is worried that his brother Oren is being too brutal against the Monicans and soon, brute force will not be enough to stem the rebellion. Trevor believes that the system they put in place was temporary and was meant to allow Trevor to continue his work. He knows that the control system is wrong, but Oren believes that the system can be controlled and be made permanent. Aeon finds Trevor alone, while he is practicing his speech to the Forum. But as she prepares to shoot Trevor, Aeon has flashbacks of kissing Trevor, and Trevor calls her by the name "Katherine". In her hesitation, Aeon is discovered and arrested. It is revealed that the attack on Trevor was organized by Oren who had passed on the information to the Monicans and allowed Aeon to overcome their defenses. Aeon escapes custody and finds Claudius alive inside the Citadel. Claudius tells Aeon that Trevor is trying to help by solving the problem of nightmares and memories that people have, of things that never happened to them. Aeon turns back into the Citadel and seeks Trevor. They end up having sex as Aeon has feelings when she is in Trevor's presence. Aeon finds Trevor's secret lab and is attacked by Oren's guards, forcing her to escape. Sithandra is livid that Aeon came out of the citadel without killing Trevor. Aeon tries to convince Sithandra to help investigate the matter further, but she refuses. Aeon breaks into the Relical. There she meets Keeper (Pete Postlethwaite), the old man who monitors everything. Aeon finds that her sister Una has been "recycled" and assigned a new identity. Meanwhile, Oren declares Trevor a traitor and assumes power. The Handler declares Aeon a fugitive on the basis on Sithandra's report. Trevor realizes that all the members of his test group 7B, of which Una was a part, have been killed in police action, by being labeled as Monicans. Aeon visits the address, where her sister had been reassigned, and only finds a newborn baby, with eyes exactly like Una's. Aeon questions the origins of everyone in Bregna and in particular, her personal connection to Trevor. Trevor arrives at the address and reveals the truth to Aeon. Everyone in Bregna is revealed to be a clone, grown from recycled DNA. With the dead constantly being reborn as new individuals and bearing partial memories of their previous lives, their troubling dreams have increased. Cloning was required because the antidote to the virus made humans infertile. Trevor's ongoing experiments were attempts to reverse the infertility. His preceding clones had all worked on this problem. Aeon learns that she is a clone of the original Trevor's wife Katherine and that she is the first "Katherine" clone in over 400 years. Una was one of Trevor's most successful experiments; part of a group of clones that proved to be fertile, with Una having been pregnant when she was killed. However, in order to keep the dynasty of Goodchild clones in power, Trevor's brother, Oren (Jonny Lee Miller), had Una killed along with the other members of the fertile experimental group. He ordered all of Trevor's research to be destroyed. In a confrontation with Trevor and Aeon, Oren reveals that nature has corrected the infertility problem and that some women are becoming pregnant without intervention by scientists. Oren has had them all killed to maintain the Goodchild reign. Aeon then goes against both Oren and her former allies, who want to kill Trevor and also kill her for not killing Trevor. Aeon convinces the other Monicans tracking her, including her friend Sithandra (Sophie Okonedo), to ignore the Handler and to help her kill Oren and his men. Aeon goes to destroy the Relical, the dirigible that stores the DNA for cloning. She discovers that he preserved Katherine's DNA for years, although an earlier Oren clone had ordered it to be destroyed so "Katherine" could not influence any Trevors. The dirigible crashes into the city wall, breaking it down to reveal the surrounding land for the first time in centuries.

When Quoyle was a young boy, his father, Guy (John Dunsworth), tossed him into a lake, expecting him to swim naturally. Images of flailing in water and nearly drowning often resurface in Quoyle's memory when he is under stress. Many years later, a 40-year-old Quoyle (Kevin Spacey), works as an ink setter at a small newspaper office in Poughkeepsie, New York. He lives a lonely life. He becomes infatuated with and marries a vivacious local woman named Petal (Cate Blanchett). Petal is an unfaithful wife and a negligent mother to their six-year-old daughter, Bunny (Alyssa, Kaitlyn and Lauren Gainer), whom she leaves on a daily basis with a local babysitter named Grace (Katherine Moennig) to carry on extramarital affairs. Petal runs off with a boyfriend, taking Bunny with her. Soon after, Petal and her boyfriend are killed in a car accident. The police return Bunny to Quoyle, informing him that Petal sold her to a black market adoption operation for $6,000. Shortly before those events, Quoyle's elderly parents commit suicide together. Quoyle's aunt, Agnis Hamm (Judi Dench), arrives to pay her respects to her late brother, though her real motive is to steal Guy's ashes (which she later dumps down an outhouse hole and urinates on). Agnis is moving to the ancestral family home in Newfoundland, Canada, which has been abandoned for 44 years. Agnis agrees to stay a few more days to help Quoyle through his recent turmoil, then persuades him to move to Newfoundland with her. While struggling to build a new life for himself, restore the derelict house, and care for Bunny, Quoyle meets Wavey Prowse (Julianne Moore), a widow whose young son, Harry, has a learning disability. Wavey and Quoyle gradually develop a deepening relationship. Wavey eventually admits she pretends to be widowed, ashamed that her philandering husband left when she was pregnant. Quoyle learns that the ancient Quoyles were pirates that ran ships aground and savagely pillaged them. When those Quoyles were driven out, they moved their house over a frozen lake to its present location, now known as Quoyle's Point. Quoyle's cousin Nolan (Marc Lawrence), an old hermit, reveals that young Agnis was raped and impregnated by her teenage brother Guy (Quoyle's father), resulting in an abortion. Quoyle applies for an ink setter job at the the local newspaper Gammy Bird. Owner and publisher, Jack Buggit (Scott Glenn), instead hires him as a reporter covering auto wrecks and the town's shipping news. With no journalism experience, Quoyle struggles to produce decent articles, incurring managing editor Tert Card's (Pete Postlethwaite) constant scorn. Reporter Billy Pretty (Gordon Pinsent) tutors and encourages Quoyle. When Quoyle's article about a millionaire's vintage yacht docked in town is popular with readers, Jack assigns him a weekly column profiling an interesting boat in port. Meanwhile, Agnis resumes her former occupation as a boat upholsterer to help support the family. She later confides to Quoyle that a woman she loved and had a long-term romance died six years earlier from leukemia. Rather than running his newspaper full time, Jack Buggit commercially fishes to prevent his adult son, Dennis (Jason Behr), who nearly died at sea, from obtaining his own commercial license, which are limited. Jack drowns while securing his boat in an oncoming storm. During the funeral wake at the Buggit house, shock and chaos erupts when Jack miraculously revives from a coma-like state caused by hypothermia. Jack gives Dennis his fishing license, believing the generational curse of Buggits dying at sea has been broken. After Jack's revival, Bunny is upset and angry at Quoyle, believing Petal could also have been "awakened," but she finally accepts her mother's death. Agnis, Quoyle, and Bunny have been living in town during the winter months while their house is renovated. On the night of the big storm, Bunny awakes and can "see" the house at Quoyle's point being blown away. When the family drives to their property, they discover the house is gone, symbolically freeing them from the dark Quoyle legacy.

Ely Braxton (Marcus Thomas), the youngest of two brothers and sons of aging former champion bull rider of the 1960's, sustains a serious head injury in a bull riding accident and stays out of competition for over a year. Hank (Kiefer Sutherland), the oldest of the two, has been a successful "Rodeo Fighter" (Rodeo Clown) for a number of years and is ready to get into the contract business of supplying the meanest bulls in the business. After about a year, Ely has the "itch" to ride again and starts on the rodeo circuit alongside Hank. Hank tries to date a pretty young barrel racer, but thinks he should take things slow. He invites Ely along on the date and Celia (Daryl Hannah) later invites Ely into her recreactional vehicle instead of Hank. Hank drives by, gets out of his truck and knocks on the door. Celia and Ely doesn't know it is Hank and she tells him to go away. Hank then peeks into the front window and finds Celia and Ely making out. Hank is crushed and for the first time in years is mad at Ely. The next time Ely rides and Hank "fights", Hank doesn't do his "fighting" job and could have let Ely get hurt if something had gone wrong with the bull's preformance. Hank fights with Ely and tells him to "look in the mirror" if he wants to know what their father (Pete Postlethwaite) is like. Ely eventually realizes how much he is hurting his brother and his backhome girlfriend, Connie (Molly Ringwald) and apologizes to Hank, but keeps on riding the bulls despite his doctor telling him not to. Ely and Hank go to the finals in Las Vegas, Ely being in the top 15 riders and Hank finally realizing his dream of being a contractor. Ely visits his father and finds out just what kind of man left his mother (Melinda Dillon) and his family. Ely draws the meanest bull in the country and it is the one contracted by Hank! What comes next is what no one wants to see.

Bowen (Dennis Quaid), a Knight of the "Old Code" of honor, valor and chivalry, tutoring his young protege, Einon (Lee Oakes) in both swordplay and the values of a knight. Einon is the king's son and heir to the throne. Brok (Brian Thompson), leader of the armies of King Freyne (Peter Hric). Brok tells Einon of a peasant rebellion, and King Freyne wants Einon to witness it being crushed. Bowen tells Einon to remember the difference between battle and butchery. (During the battle, a caption says the movie takes place in England in the year 984 A.D.) In battle Einon is separated from Bowen. King Freyen is killed & then Einon fatally wounded in a accident when a young girl (Sandra) pushes Einon into a pike, driving it into his chest. Einon's mother, Queen Aislinn (Julie Christie) orders only Bowen to be with her & Einon. As Aislinn examines her son's wound, Bowen says Einon is beyond all help. Aislinn looks at a small statue of a dragon and says, "Not all." Aislinn takes Einon & Bowen to a mountain cave where a dragon appears. He is reluctant to help, but Aislinn convinces him that Einon is not a butcher like Freyen & will grow up to be a fine leader. dragon insists that Einon swear to all this himself. Einon swears. Dragon opens a chest plate and removes half his heart, placing it in Einon's chest. As Einon wakes up, he commands the boy to do as he promised. Aislinn kneels before the dragon in gratitude, and Bowen promises to repay the favor any way he can, any time in the future when the dragon might need him. But Einon grows up to be as cruel as his father. He crushes the peasant rebellion, captures their leader Readbeard & orders his eyes to be burnt out. Bowen intervenes but is insulted by Einon. Bowen goes to the Dragon & yells that his gift has corrupted Einon & that now Bowen would spend the rest of his life in hunting the dragon & to kill him. 12 yrs later Bowen is a Dragon hunting mercenary. Brother Gilbert is a monk who finds Bowen on one of his hunting travels. Lord Felton is Einon's minion & keeps track of Bowen & provides him money for killing the dragon in service of the King. Bowen only accepts as he needs funds to keep his horse & equipment. Meanwhile Redbeard, now old, blind, and feeble, is working in a quarry, & has daughter, Kara (Dina Meyer). Einon, now a grown adult, kills Redbeard, just for fun & leaves her to grieve. Gilbert travels with Bowen to write poetry for his dragon slayer. They discover another dragon (voiced by Sean Connery). Bowen moves forward through the falls to kill the dragon, but it escapes. Soon, they come to an empty field. The dragon scoops Bowen into his mouth where Bowen stabs his sword into the dragon's palate. Both stuck, they come to an impasse and remain that way for a number of hours. The dragon has had enough; he pushes Bowen out of his mouth and traps him under his claws. Instead of killing Bowen, the dragon offers an alternative which would be beneficial for both of them. The dragon terrorizes the villages which allows Bowen to offer protection for a fee. Bowen then "kills" the dragon in mock battle. The dragon claims he is the last of his kind. Aislinn is disgusted at Einon, who just manages to evade an assassination attempt by Kara, who is imprisoned. Then Einon realizes that Kara is the girl who pushed him into the pike that led to his dragon heart. Einon is indebted to Kara for this. Einon has sex with Kara, who mockingly attacks him with a knife. As it slashes Einon, the dragon winces in pain. There is link between the dragon & Einon. Dragon doesn't tell Bowen what that link is. Bowen decides to call the Dragon Draco. Aislinn helps Kara escape from Einon's bedroom. She heads back to her village trying to entice another rebellion but is rebuffed by senior villager Hewe. Draco appears & pretends to attack & Bowen arrives to offer protection. Kara accuses him of blackmail. Bowen uses the village's hatred for her & suggest a sacrifice to the dragon. Draco finds the idea disgusting & flies off with Kara, pretending he is appeased. Kara realizes Draco & Bowen are working together. Thats when Einon arrives at the scene & challenges Bowen to battle. Einon says that he made no promises to Bowen & Bowen is disgusted that Einon is as treacherous as his father. Bowen is distracted & Einon defeats Bowen & is about to stab him when Draco intervenes & exposes his chest & reveals his half heart. Einon flees. Kara wants Bowen to lead the rebellion against Einon, but he refuses. Kara exposes Bowen & Draco in front of the villager in their next scam by proving they are working together. The villagers are about to kill them when Draco flies away with Kara, Bowen & Gilbert to Avalon (resting place of King Arthur). At Avalon Draco says that he is the dragon that gave Einon half his heart and he did so knowing that Einon would betray all the vows he made. To gain entry into the dragon heaven he needs to redeem himself. He is keen to help Bowen lead the rebellion. Despondent and having lost faith in the Old Code, Bowen refuses. Bowen then sees a vision at the statue of King Arthur who recites the creed of the Old Code. Bowen repeats the words and is filled with a new sense of purpose, reminded of all that he once swore himself to. Draco appears, smiling, and shields Bowen from the rain with one of his wings. Back at Kara's home village, he tells the people that he is starting a war against Einon, and when they see that he has the support of a dragon, they are all moved to rebellion. The men are trained by Bowen to fight and even Brother Gilbert proves to be a master archer. Brok comes across the village & sees them training with Draco & tells Einon. Aislinn comes to Einon and presents him with a gift... a team of five of the finest dragon slayers in the land. Bowen & the villagers attack Einon's castle. Draco attacks from the air & takes out the castle's defenses. Einon comes out with his army & walks into a trap laid by Bowen where Gilbert & Kara lead the villagers to ambush Einon's army. Gilbert shoots an arrow right through Einon's heart which drops Draco from the sky & is captured by the dragon slayers. Suddenly Einon spurs his horse and races to the castle, orders the dragon slayers not to kill Draco... he wants him alive, and safe..."for all eternity". Draco moans, "Oh... no." Kara leads Bowen & Gilbert into the castle through the secret passage that Aislinn made her escape from. Bowen & Einon battle. Gilbert battles Felton & defeats him while Kara kills the overconfident Brok. Aislinn visits Draco, who knows that she is there to kill him. The hit he took from the arrow helped Einon figure out that his life is tied to Draco's and that as long as Draco lives, Einon is virtually immortal, but if Draco was killed, Einon would die as well. Aislinn explains that she made a mistake years ago when she "saved a creature not worth saving". Einon, kills Aislinn. Einon comes across Bowen, and they battle their way up onto the parapets as Kara watches. Einon breaks Bowen's sword. As Bowen swings away from Einon on a pulley, Einon loses his balance and plunges off the parapet, breaking through a wooden walkway into the bottom of the castle. Bowen reaches Draco and starts to unchain him, and Draco reveals the final piece of the puzzle...through the shared heart, he and Einon share each other's physical pain, but Draco's half holds the life force, and he must die in order to vanquish Einon. Bowen has come to respect and admire Draco too much and cannot bring himself to kill his friend. But Einon appears, bloody but alive, grabbing Kara from behind and putting his sword to her neck. Draco bites hard on his own hand and Einon feels the pain and is forced to drop his sword. Kara pulls away from him, and Einon draws a dagger and rushes at Bowen. In a tense moment, Bown seems unsure until Draco gives him a reassuring smile, pulling back his chest plate. Bowen hurls Kara's ax into Draco's heart. Einon gasps and collapses in shock as Draco smiles at Bowen one last time before peacefully dying. Kara, Brother Gilbert, and the victorious villagers gather around the body of Draco where Bowen is mourning his passing, not knowing who or where to turn to for inspiration. Then he hears Draco's voice telling him to look to the stars. Draco's body dissipates into a rolling ball of reddish light that slowly ascends into the skies, heading toward the constellation that Bowen named him after. The other stars gather around Draco's soul-- the collective of dragons welcoming the last of their kind home. Bowen smiles as he sees that Draco has redeemed himself and gained entry into his heaven.
