Between 1983 and 1987, Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar (Javier Bardem) had a romantic relationship with the journalist and the television presenter, Virginia Vallejo (Penélope Cruz). Naples Ranch, Colombia, 1981. Pablo lives in a palatial property with his wife Maria Victoria Henao (Julieth Restrepo). Pablo orders a hired gun to attack a Govt building to find a file on him that connects him to the murder of a dozen agents. Pablo pays him USD 30,000 for the hit. Virgina arrives by chartered plane for a huge party that Pablo is throwing at his house. The plane lands in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by men with guns. She thinks she is being kidnapped. Virginia notices the social hierarchy. The soldiers are at the bottom, handling security and operations. Above them, are the cream, the artists, businessmen, soccer players, journalists, models. Pablo has made a lot of money in a short amount of time and Virgina is curious, how. At the top, are the kings of the hill. Pablo says he is building 2000 homes for the people living on the garbage dump. In reality this was the founding of the Medellin cartel and crowning of Pablo as its king. Later, Virginia interviews Pablo at the garbage dump about the housing project for the poor. She sees the 600 units he has already built and sees that the locals hold Pablo in high respect. Virginia respects Pablo for how he uses his money. Virginia starts dating Pablo. She is married to a plastic surgeon, who doesn't want to divorce her (but they are separated), since he doesn't want to marry his teenage girlfriends. Pablo forces her husband to sign the papers by abducting him from his operating room. Pablo takes Virginia to a private island, and they have sex. Pablo also attends a congress of drug traffickers. They are the Narco millionaires, and she is the only journalist with access to their exclusive club. That night they divide the USA among them. Medellin gets Florida. Cali gets New York. Virginia loves the power Pablo enjoys. In 1982, Pablo starts landing flights full of drugs on highways in Florida to supply cocaine in his territories. One kilo of cocaine is $7K in Columbia. Pablo adds lactose to make it 3 kilos and sells it for $150K in US. The traffickers transfer the drugs and abandon the plane by the time the police respond. Reagan appoints DEA Agent Shepard (Peter Sarsgaard) to lead the war on drugs. 80% of the cocaine is coming in from Columbia. Columbia offers to extradite the Narcos to US for trial as in Columbia they kill the judges. Pablo knows this treaty will hurt the drugs business, so he decides to get his men elected to the Columbian government to fight it from the inside. Congressman costs 10 MM pesos, senator 50 MM pesos and President 1500 MM pesos. It's about money and they have it. Cartel funds both sides of the election, so they can't lose no matter who wins. In exchange they ask for guarantees to repeal the treaty with the US. Maria asks Pablo to end it with Virginia and he promises. Pablo continues to have sex with Virginia. Pablo's party wins the elections, and he reaches the Columbian Congress in 1982. Pablo sends Virginia to US with a suitcase full of money to buy herself a new wardrobe for her TV show. Shepard meets Virginia after waiting in her hotel lobby for her to arrive. Virginia tells Shepard that US is not worried about the drugs coming in, but they are more worried about the cash flowing out of the US. Shepard guesses that Virginia is involved with Pablo. Meanwhile in Columbia, the minister of justice calls a special session to revoke the election of Pablo to Congress. Pablo questions the justice minister about the source of funds for his campaign and says he will give solid proof proving the corruption. Maria wants Pablo to resign as the President backs the minister (as even the President has stuff to hide). The justice minister leaks a story on Pablo's involvement in the murder of police officers. The hired gun spent the money on women and never did the job. He is put to death in the most brutal manner possible. Pablo gets all the cartels to deposit 10 MM pesos each and forms a company to kill the justice minister (this way they are all guilty). Pablo hires the Sicarios to assassinate the minister. The Sicarios are boys from the slums who are trained to be hit-men. They are prepared to die as the hit gives their family more money than they could earn in a lifetime. The minister is killed. The govt declares war on the mafia and the cartels relocate to Panama in 1984. This is where they keep the money. Columbia sends an ex-President to negotiate with the cartels. Pablo offers to pay the external debt of $12 Bn and 80% of income to be brought to Columbia for investments, in exchange for amnesty against extradition. Columbian govt is not willing negotiate the extradition as they are under pressure from North Americans. Govt offers reward of 1000 MM Pesos for Pablo. Pablo arms the slums and offers hard USD currency for every dead cop (2k for every beat cop, up to $50K for every dead major). The civil war is on. Bring the badge and get paid. Law sets its own exchange rate in the slums. 10 executions for each dead police officer. The Govt creates a special unit Search Bloc, to hunt Pablo. Shepard meets the Columbian officials and secures permission to hunt for the cartel members in Columbia, rather than wait for the extradition in US. Virginia is fired from her job due to her association with Pablo. Shepard meets Virginia in Columbia and offers protection in exchange for cooperation. Virginia is seen having this meeting with Shepard. Virginia begs Pablo to leave her alone. By now Pablo was having sex with teenage girls from poor neighborhoods, handed over to him for a few thousand pesos. This made it very easy for the Search Bloc to track down Pablo, as they now had many more informants. Pablo releases birds into the air to crash the helicopters to buy time to escape. As Pablo goes into hiding, the Cali cartel moves into Florida. One by one his main men are picked off. By 1989, Pablo has lost his strongest men and now he can only run. Virginia moves to Miami to host a TV show. Pablo declares all-out war against the government. Bogota airport is closed after a plane is shot down midair. Bombs go off all over Bogota. The country begs the Government to give Pablo what he wants. 2 US citizens were killed on the flight, and Shepard uses this to authorize military ops in Columbia to guarantee safety of US citizens. Pablo surrenders but is imprisoned in a prison that he built for himself in 1991. La Catedral, Medellin. Pablo builds a home for himself and lives in luxury. The business stabilizes and starts growing again. Pablo imposes protection taxes of 20% on his territories, while the Cali were only charging 5%. Virginia loses her ad contracts and has to sell her home to pay her debts. She moves into a small apartment. She meets Pablo at the prison to understand if she is safe. Virginia asks for protection and for $80K to go to Europe. Pablo refuses her and calls her a slut. Palo murders 2 business partners (who were stealing from Pablo) inside the prison. The news reaches the media, and this makes the Government an accomplice. They decide to move Pablo to a military prison. Pablo escapes before that. Government releases Narcos willing to fight Pablo in exchange for clearing their records. The Narcos, the search Bloc, DEA and FBI make a ruthless hunting party. Men are killed for working for Pablo. Bodies appear all over Medellin. Anyone ever close to him, is a target. Virginia is also attacked but manages to escape alive. Virginia reaches Shepard and informs him that Pablo is trying to get his family out of Columbia. Once they are out, he will wage war against the country again. Shepard lobbies hard with the US govt to deny entry to Pablo's family in Germany. They are returned back to Bogota and escorted by the military to a strong hold. They are held as bait for Pablo to come and mount a rescue. Pablo calls Maria and the agencies use the call to triangulate his position. Dec 1993. He is found and gunned out at his hideout while he is talking to his family. Virginia agrees to testify before a judge.

In 1961 London, Jenny Mellor (Carey Mulligan) is a 16-year-old schoolgirl on track to get accepted to Oxford University. Her studies are controlled by her strict father, Jack (Alfred Molina). Her parents (Mother Marjorie (Cara Seymour)) are conservative & want the best for her. They trust Jenny completely & give her the freedom to live her life the way she wants. But her parents are very disapproving of all the class boys that Jenny brings to her home. Jenny's dad likes people who know what they want to be doing in life. He appreciates Jenny for her focus on getting into Oxford & hence automatically disapproves of any young man who comes into their home & says that they aren't sure of what they want to be doing next in life. He calls them "teddy boy". After youth orchestra rehearsals, Jenny waits at a bus stop on the street in heavy rain when David Goldman (Peter Sarsgaard), an older man stops his Bristol 405 and tells her that he is a music lover and is worried about her cello getting wet, and he convinces Jenny to put her cello in his car while she walks alongside. As the rain becomes heavier, Jenny asks David if she can sit inside the car. The two talk about music and, before being dropped off, Jenny confides that she is looking forward to attending university and being able to live a life of culture, doing things such as going to art galleries and watching French films. The following week, David has flowers delivered to Jenny's house, wishing her luck at her youth orchestra's concert. Later, she sees him in town and approaches him. David asks Jenny if she is free to go and see a concert and have supper with him and his friends. She happily agrees and thanks him. On the night of the concert, Jack disapproves of Jenny going, but when David comes by to pick up Jenny, he easily charms Jack into letting him take Jenny and bring her home later than her normal curfew. David introduces Jenny to his equally charming friends, including a lady by the name of Helen (Rosamund Pike) who ends up becoming a mentor to Jenny in the grown-up group of David's. Jenny is smitten by the high lifestyle of effortless elegance of Helen & wants to emulate her. Danny (Dominic Cooper) is Helen's "boyfriend" & by the looks of it is enormously wealthy. Danny & David are friends with each other. David, Helen and Danny seem to hang out together for too often. Finding she is also interested in art, they invite Jenny to an art auction. David picks up Jenny at school and they go to the auction, winning a bid for a painting by Edward Burne-Jones and going to Danny's place afterwards. Jenny starts spending a lot of time with this group & her grades start slipping at school. David even manages to convince Jenny's parents to send her away on a weekend trip with him on the pretext of a chance meeting with a famous author Clive Lewis (one of Jenny's favorites who wrote The Chronicles of Narnia) who is currently visiting Oxford. That night David acts as gentleman with Jenny & doesn't force her into sleeping with him, although there is fondling. Jenny then shows a signed copy of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to her parents (in fact signed by David, as they had never met Lewis). Impressed by David's connections and charisma, Jack and Marjorie approve of their romantic relationship. Later, Jenny discovers that David is a con man who makes money through a variety of shady practices. She is initially shocked but silences her misgivings in the face of David's persuasive charm. Soon, David takes Jenny to Paris as a 17th birthday gift. Jenny's parents invite Graham (Matthew Beard), a boy Jenny knows from Youth Orchestra to Jenny's birthday party, but David arrives, and Graham goes home. David takes Jenny to Paris and that night David and Jenny have sex for the first time. In Paris, the two go sight-seeing, take photos, and go dancing, and Jenny loses her virginity to David. Back in London, Jenny gives her favorite teacher, Miss Stubbs (Olivia Williams), Chanel perfume as a gift from her trip, but Miss Stubbs refuses the gift, telling Jenny that she knows where it came from and is both concerned and disapproving of her relationship with David. They argue and have a falling-out. Later that night, David proposes marriage. After talking with her parents, Jenny accepts the proposal, but the news causes an argument with her headmistress Miss Walters (Emma Thompson), and she decides to drop out of school and not pursue a place at university. When David proposes marriage, Jenny accepts and leaves school. All of Jenny's teachers plead with her to continue on her journey to Oxford, but Jenny is exulted with the attention she is getting & accepts David's offer. Her parents aren't the least bit bothered & in fact her dad seems happy that now Jenny will be well looked after & there is no need for her to go to oxford after all. She one night, while David is treating Jenny's family to dinner, Jenny happens to check David's mail & discovers David is already married. Shocked, Jenny tells David to take her and her parents back home. Jenny tearfully argues with David, telling him she gave up her education to be with him. David says he will get a divorce and agrees that he will tell her parents the truth with her, but after she goes inside her house, he drives off and is never seen again. Jenny despairs, and goes to see Danny and Helen, blaming them for not telling her the truth early on. She also blames her parents for encouraging her to throw her life away with an older man. Jenny goes to see David's wife Sarah (Sally Hawkins), who tells her that David is a serial adulterer, and has a son. Later that night, Jack apologizes to Jenny, admitting that he messed up and that he believed David could give her the life she wanted. Jack points out that although David wasn't who he said he was, Jenny had also deceived her parents about David's nature by playing along with some of David's lies to her parents. When Jenny is then refused re-admission to her old school to repeat her last year and take her exams, she goes to Miss Stubbs, apologizing and asking for her help. Miss Stubbs eagerly agrees, and Jenny resumes her studies and is accepted at Oxford the following year. In a closing voiceover, Jenny shares a story about dating boys her age and starting over with fresh eyes, despite her experience with David.

A secretary's life changes in unexpected ways after her dog dies. Peggy (Molly Shannon) is single, childless, in her forties, a lonely executive assistant in a friendly office. Her dog Pencil is the love of her life, and when he dies after eating some sort of toxin, Peggy's life spins out of her control: a friendly neighbor invites her for dinner; a friendly staff member at her vet's calls with an abused dog he recommends she adopt - she does, and also finds herself attracted to this fellow. She becomes a vegan, supports animal-rights causes, and embroils her brother's young children in these concerns. In 1989, Anthony Swofford (Jake Gyllenhaal) is getting trained in a U.S. Marine Corps boot camp by the choleric, hard-boiled Drill Instructor Fitch (Scott MacDonald). After finishing boot camp, "Swoff" is dispatched to Camp Pendleton. Swoff then explains how he tried to fit into civilian life. He thought about going to college but he instead joins 'shows' some highlights of his life including taking a 'dump' and 'studying' (having sexual intercourse) with his girlfriend; who later cheats on him. Swofford finds boot camp tough as he struggles through making friends and living day to day. He then writes "fuck it" on a light billboard with large letters before the movie cuts to him sitting in the head. In the head trying to be "sick" (by drinking a whole bottle of liquid laxative), is slipped food under the door before he is approached by Staff Sergeant Sykes (Jamie Foxx), a Marine "lifer" who invites Swofford to his Scout Sniper course. After arduous training sessions that claim the life of one candidate, Swofford is one of the 8 remaining from the original 60 candidates and is selected to be trained as a sniper and paired with his roommate Troy (Peter Sarsgaard), who becomes Swofford's spotter. During all of this Swoff is put through his paces and learns a variety of sniper techniques. Although he first thinks of it as a joke, he starts to fall in love with the idea of getting to kill someone. Shortly after, Kuwait is invaded by Iraq and Swofford's unit is dispatched to the Persian Gulf as a part of Operation Desert Shield. Although the Marines are very eager to see combat action, they are forced to hydrate, wait, patrol the nearby area and adjust themselves to the arid environment. A main technique suggested for boredom and loneliness is masturbation. During the waiting period the "wall of shame" is shown and as Swoff is looking at it a fellow Marine (Fowler) teases Swoff that its only a matter of time before Swoff's girl is up there. this majorly plays on Swoff's mind throughout his deployment. During an impromptu Christmas party thrown by Swofford, who has obtained unauthorized alcohol, Fergus (Brian Geraghty), a member of Swofford's unit, accidentally sets fire to a tent and a crate of flares. Swofford gets the blame because he was supposed to be on watch but had Fergus sit in for him. As a consequence, Swofford is demoted from Lance Corporal (E-3) to Private (E-1) and is forced to undertake the degrading task of burning "diesel fuel" (excrement). The punishments, the heat and the boredom, combined with suspicions of his girlfriend's infidelity and feelings of isolation, temporarily drive Swofford to the point of mental breakdown. He threatens and nearly shoots fellow Marine Fergus then turns the weapon on himself and demands the traumatized Fergus to shoot him. When Fergus refuses Swofford leaves the tent. After the long stand in the desert, Operation Desert Storm, the coalition force's ground campaign, begins. The Marines are dispatched to the Saudi-Kuwaiti border. Briefly before the action begins, Swofford learns from Sykes that Troy concealed his criminal record when enlisting and will be discharged after the end of hostilities. Troy begins to keep distant from his fellow Marines. Knowing that Troy will never be allowed to re-enlist, the Marines brand him with a hot USMC iron, marking him as one of their own. Following an accidental air attack from friendly forces, the Marines advance through the desert, facing no enemies on the ground. The troops march through the Highway of Death, strewn with the burnt vehicles and charred bodies of retreating Iraqi soldiers, the aftermath of a U.S. bombing campaign. Later, the Marines suddenly catch sight of distant burning oil wells, lit only moments before by the retreating Iraqis, and they attempt to dig sleeping holes as a rain of crude oil falls from the sky. Before they can finish them, Sykes orders the squad to move to where the wind prevents the oil from raining on them. Swofford and Troy are finally given a combat mission. Their order is to shoot two high-ranking officers in Saddam's Republican Guard, holed up at a nearby airfield. At the last second before Swofford takes the shot, a high-ranking US officer interrupts them to call in an air strike. Swofford and Troy vehemently protest but they are overruled and later watch as the planes destroy the Iraqi airfield. On returning home the troops parade through the towns in a jovial celebration of victory. Swofford returns home to his family and girlfriend, but discovers her with a new boyfriend. Fowler is seen to be with a prostitute in a bar, Kruger (Lucas Black) in a corporate boardroom, Escobar (Laz Alonso) as a supermarket employee, Cortez (Jacob Vargas) as a father of three kids, and Sykes continuing his service as a First Sergeant in Operation Iraqi Freedom. An unspecified amount of time later Swofford learns of Troy's death (the cause of which is never specified) during a surprise visit from Fergus. He attends the funeral, meets some of his old friends, and afterwards he reminisces about the effects of the war.

It tells the story of Stephen Glass (Hayden Christensen), who was the youngest journalist at the New Republic. This newspaper prides itself to have been read by everybody in the political field in Washington, and to be the only one in the American president's plane. Little by little, we see how things work in the editorial room: Stephen's direct boss and editor is Michael Kelly, who is constantly insisting on having every single detail checked through direct notes. The first time Stephen gets in trouble in the film it's on an article about a Republican young people convention, where he alleged they got drunk and called a prostitute. Stephen gets into trouble because the hotel manager complains that hotel rooms did not have any drink or food fridges in them, all the opposite of what Stephen had said in his article. Kelly talks with Stephen about that. Stephen comes back later admitting he has made a mistake: he saw so many mini spirits bottles and he took it for granted that they came from a mini-bar. Stephen says he's sorry, and that if Kelly wants his resignation, he'll sign it right away. However, Kelly is not about to do anything of that sort. Stephen's girlfriend is Caitlin Avey (Chloë Sevigny), a fellow journalist at the newspaper. She is worried because Stephen has had much success lately, she's even a bit jealous. Stephen is freelancing and writing stories for other magazines, like Rolling Stones, because his news stories have always got an edge to them: he investigates, finds out the truth and talks about humourous situations and peculiar characters. Also, to Caitlin's dismay, he's even going to be busier, as he is about to start to study law, which he considers to be more prestigious. In the small row they have over this matter, Stephen blames his parents, who follow the peer pressure of their friends and think that a lawyer is the most prestigious job in the world. Kelly is fired as editor and replaced by one of Stephens colleagues: Charles "Chuck" Lane (Peter Sarsgaard). One of his most successful stories is about how software companies try to stop hackers from damaging their products. In a computer-geek convention, Stephen tells how a computer company hired and paid one million dollars to a hacker so that he would stop breaking their security system. That hacker signed a contract right there, and then boasted about it in front of everybody. While Stephen is telling this story at the meeting room, all journalists and editors sitting together deciding the new news stories, he jumps on his chair in the meeting room and shouts "show me the money, show me the money" emulating the hacker with a cocky attitude. Everybody knows this is the best news story for years, and they all wonder "where he gets these characters from". Stephen's news story is so appealing: the attitude, the streetwise teenagers who make the best out of it and beat computer tycoons to their money, etc... In a later scene, Amy (another reporter at TNR) is trying to copy Stephen's sense of humour, but Caitlin tells her to come back to what she does best: glossing figures, explaining in plain words economic concepts and situations, and being serious and formal at all times. In the Forbes internet magazine, Adam Penenberg (Steve Zahn) is told off by his boss. Adam is supposed to be responsible for all the high-tech content of the subscription magazine; he didn't even get a hint of the news story everybody is talking about, that about about the million-dollar contract to the hacker. Adam calls Chuck asking for more details about the story, as he would like to go on investigating it. Stephen reads his notes and gives him some further details. Adam starts investigating, but soon he finds out things don't add up. He calls Chuck and Stephen once again, asking where the latter had got wind of the story. Stephen fabricates the ghost-company's website, but he doesn't realise that he put it in a net section which could only be seen by AOL subscribers. He didn't think or didn't have time of fabricating a whole fake website domain. Stephen admits that he may have made a mistake over some minor details on the story, but he insists on the truth of the main article. This time, Chuck starts to get the hint that something fishy is going on. Although he doesn't dismiss Stephen yet, this time the journalist is not going to find it so easy to move on. Caitlin supports Stephen through and through. As many more untruthful details spring to view, and Adam won't let things be, Chuck comes to the point when he insists on being taken to the location where that computer-geek convention took place right away. Stephen feels unsure, and tries to talk his way out of it, but this time to no avail. Chuck comes to realise that there are many problems with Stephen's story: the hotel where it was celebrated does not know anything about a convention of that kind, the actual room where it was supposed to have taken place is not big enough to accommodate the huge number of people Stephen says he himself saw, etc... More and more details appear missing, and the teenager who supposedly earned that million dollars is nowhere to be seen. The pressure increases, especially on Chuck. More facts come to light proving Stephen fabricated stories, but he continues to hopelessly deny it to Chuck and is subsequently fired. Chuck faces a wall display with The New Republic's old numbers, and he starts pulling them out, re-reading Stephen's editorial contributions once again, this time with a view to finding strange details, unlikely events, non-existent names of people and companies, dates which don't hold up, etc. Caitlin talks to Chuck. She is angry that Stephen was fired, and she is disappointed because Chuck and higher levels of management are not standing by Stephen. Chuck talks to her, saying that everybody believed what Stephen said because they all liked him, and that she should use her journalistic instinct to find out whether Stephen had been lying or not. This makes Caitlin think, and after reviewing articles, she admits that Chuck is right: they all had been fooled by Stephen's charm and his news bombshells. The New Republic will write an editorial retracting almost half of Stephen Glass' news stories, and admitting to some more details in some more articles which cannot be put to the test concerning their veracity. The last captions of the film say what happened to the people behind this story: Caitlin kept on writing for the New Republic Stephen did not want to comment on the film, and he dedicated full time to the study of law at university. In 1638 Queen Anne of France gives Birth to a boy, who will inherit the throne one day. But, only known to few, there is a twin brother born minutes later. 22 years later. The Kingdom of France faces bankruptcy from King Louis XIV's (Leonardo DiCaprio) wars against the Dutch, causing French citizens to starve (he has rationed all the food for the army). As the country moves toward revolution, King Louis prepares for war. At this point, the four musketeers have gone their separate ways (Of the Musketeers, who had served his father Louis XIII faithfully, only one is still on the king's side); Aramis (Jeremy Irons) is now a priest, Porthos (Gérard Depardieu) is a womanizing drunkard, and Athos (John Malkovich) has retired to his farm. Only D'Artagnan (Gabriel Byrne) has remained loyal to the musketeers and is now the captain. Louis XIV is having trouble with the Jesuits (who have declared his wars unjust and the source of public hunger). After an assassination attempt on Louis by the Jesuit order is foiled by D'Artagnan, Louis instructs Aramis to hunt down and kill their leader. Athos' only son, Raoul (Peter Sarsgaard), aspires to join the musketeers. At a palace festival, Louis sets his eyes on Christine Bellefort (Judith Godrèche), Raoul's fiance. He immediately plots to send Raoul to the battlefront (Raoul has already served at the front and knows that he has been recalled on King's orders as his eyes have fallen on Christine), where he is killed soon after. Aware that Louis orchestrated his son's death, Athos renounces his allegiance to the king (& makes an enemy out of D'Artagnan in the process). After Raoul is killed, Athos wants to attack Louis XIV, but is stopped by D'Artagnan. Aramis summons Porthos, Athos, and D'Artagnan for a secret meeting in which he reveals he is the Jesuit's secret leader and has a plan to depose Louis. Athos and Porthos agree to join him, but D'Artagnan refuses. Athos brands him a traitor and threatens him with death should they ever meet again. Aramis cannot understand why D'Artagnan chooses to stand up for Louis XIV. Meanwhile, Louis seduces Christine (he invites her to the palace and assigns her an apartment there), who later begins to suspect his part in Raoul's death (after she gets a letter from Raoul, which he had posted before his death, in which he forgives her for what he knows Christine would have done). The musketeers infiltrate the Île Sainte-Marguerite prison and free a prisoner wearing an iron mask. The prisoner is taken to the countryside, where Aramis reveals he is Philippe, King Louis' brother. Their mother, Queen Anne (Anne Parillaud), gave birth to identical twins. Louis XIII, to avoid dynastic warfare between his sons, sent Philippe to live in the countryside and grow up without knowing his true identity. When Louis XIII died, he revealed Philippe's existence to Anne and Louis XIV. Anne wanted to restore Philippe's birthright. Instead, Louis was too superstitious to have his brother killed and, to preserve his power, imprisoned him in the iron mask to conceal his identity, an act that Aramis executed. Aramis wishes to redeem himself and save France by replacing Louis with the more benevolent Philippe. The musketeers tutor Philippe in courtly life and how to behave like Louis. Meanwhile, Athos develops paternal feelings for Philippe. At a masquerade ball, the musketeers lure Louis to his quarters and subdue him. They dress Philippe in Louis's clothes and return him to the festivities while taking Louis to a waiting boat in the dungeons. D'Artagnan, however, sees through the ruse (Anne also visited Philippe at the ball, in a major departure from protocol) after Christine publicly accuses Philippe of Louis's role in Raoul's death (instead of dismissing her, the King bends down to comfort her). He forcibly escorts Philippe to the dungeons. Musketeer soldiers intervene before Athos, Porthos, and Aramis can escape with Louis. The king is rescued as the three musketeers get away, but Philippe is captured. Though Louis is prepared to kill Philippe, D'Artagnan, upon learning Philippe's true identity (as Louis's brother), begs that he be spared. Louis instead orders Philippe back to the Bastille and into the iron mask. Soon after, a grieving Christine commits suicide. D'Artagnan contacts the musketeers to help rescue Philippe from the Bastille. Louis, suspecting an attempt, ambushes them at the prison. Louis offers D'Artagnan clemency in exchange for surrender. D'Artagnan refuses, privately telling his comrades that he is Louis and Philippe's father from an affair with the Queen, and that that was the reason for his loyalty to Louis. As they charge one final time at Louis and his men, they are fired upon; their bravery compels the soldiers to close their eyes before firing, and all miss. Louis attempts to stab Philippe but fatally wounds D'Artagnan. Philippe nearly strangles Louis to death, but D'Artagnan's dying words halt him. D'Artagnan's top lieutenant, Andre (Edward Atterton), angered by his mentor's death, swears his men to secrecy and sides with Philippe. They switch the twins again, and Philippe orders Louis locked away. He then names Athos, Porthos, and Aramis as his closest advisers. At a small graveside service for D'Artagnan, Philippe tells Athos that he has come to love him like a father, which Athos reciprocates. Philippe later issues Louis a royal pardon and confines him to the countryside to live in seclusion, while he goes on to become one of France's greatest kings.
