Vijay Kapoor (Amitabh Bachchan) is a successful businessman. He lives happily with his wife Pratima (Raakhee Gulzar) and their four children. Ajay (Akshay Kumar), their only son who was studying abroad and has graduated from university, received an academic degree in Information Technology and came back home now. Daughters are Priti (Juhi Chawla), Priya (Simone Singh) and Rani. Ladoo Mama (Shakti Kapoor) is Pratima's brother and lives with Vijay. Ladoo is dating Sweety Aunty (Kunika). Brij (Anang Desai) is a family friend of Vijay. Jagmohan Thappar (Alok Nath) is a business competitor, but on friendly terms with Vijay. Rajesh Purohit (Mohnish Bahl) enters the family, and deviously impresses Vijay with his efficiency, and his eldest daughter Priti (Juhi Chawla) with his charm, whereas his main goal is to impoverish their family and take over Vijay's fortune. Soon, Vijay approves the marriage of Priti and Rajesh who becomes a son-in-law who stays at home. Meanwhile, Ajay falls in love with Nisha (Karisma Kapoor) and plans to marry her. Nisha is Jagmohan's daughter. At first Ajay finds a 100 flaws in Nisha and tells her that she has no sense of dressing. Nisha converts herself to a traditional Indian girl and meets Ajay. Now AJay is interested in her, but Nisha says now she can get any decent guy she wants and starts dating Suniel Shetty to make Ajay jealous. The whole family goes on a picnic to woo Nisha and it turns out that Suniel is Nisha's brother and was only acting to make Ajay jealous. Vijay convinces Ajay to first gain experience in the family business, even though Ajay wants to start his own business. However, ideological differences result in disputes between the two. Hari Singh (Ashish Vidyarthi) is a factory supervisor & union leader who mistreats his workers & gambles during working hours and Ajay sees this. Ajay confronts Hari, who is rude and dismissive towards Ajay. When Hari hits Rajesh, Ajay retaliates and beats Hari. Hari calls a strike. Vijay tells Ajay that he knows everything about Unions and he still ignores this and uses the union for his own purposes. He wants Ajay to apologize to Hari. Vijay forces Ajay to apologize to Hari. Consequently, Ajay stands firm in his decision to start his own business. He asks his father for economic assistance. When Vijay refuses to do so, Ajay takes a loan. When Vijay discovers this, he is furious and throws Ajay out of the house (Rajesh tries to talk to Ajay into accepting Vijay's money and Ajay tells him to get out of his room. Rajesh decides to leave the house (pretending to be offended of being told to leave the house), but Vijay throws out Ajay instead). Ajay finally marries Nisha and they move into their new house. Jagmohan refuses to support Ajay, but Nisha goes against him & marries Ajay. Rajesh makes Vijay sign a power of attorney, without his knowledge, hidden in a stack of normal papers. This is how Vijay goes bankrupt, and all his fortune goes automatically to Rajesh. The lenders arrive at Vijay's doorstep asking for their money back, else they will liquidate all of Vijay's properties, including his house. Rajesh reveals his true nature and it emerges, he was in cahoots with Hari and the money lenders (he had mortgaged the properties for list price, but pocketed half the amount himself). Rajesh knew that Ajay never asked him to leave the house, only his room, but Rajesh deliberately overplayed the incident to get Vijay to throw Ajay out of the house. Priti overhears all this and is shocked. As Ajay finds out what happened, he gets that Rajesh was the one who had incited arguments between the two. Ajay tries to get close to his father again, which causes a crisis in his relationship with Nisha, who is not pleased with Ajay's reunion with his family. Ajay and Nisha get separated due to consistent arguments between them, and while she finds out that she is pregnant, Ajay has already returned home. His mission now is to return his family fortune and his father's faith, as the latter still cannot forgive him their dispute. Vijay and Ajay eventually become reconciled, although he is yet to return the fortune. They get a stay order on the house auction and buy some time to figure the mess out. Vijay rules out harming Rajesh as that would impact Priti. Rajesh begins to treat Priti badly (after Ajay confronts Rajesh and beats him up), and she also comes back home. Ajay is asked by Vijay to get Nisha back home (she had gone to her father after the tiff). But when Ajay arrives there, Jagmohan asks him to sign divorce papers. Ajay brings Nisha home in exchange (in a deal made with Jagmohan only) for signing the divorce papers and asks her not to reveal the truth to his family. But Nisha is shocked when Ajay actually does sign the papers and hands them to Nisha, who goes back home with her dad. As auction is imminent, the factory workers finally realize that they are going to lose everything. They beat up Hari for conspiring against Vijay and his business. Ajay saves Hari and he is grateful. The workers pool their savings and their houses to gather enough cash to buy the factory and the house at the auctions. Ladoo bids against Rajesh at the auction and the winning bid is Rs 125 Crores. Now Ajay has 2 days to pay the money. Ajay then decides to return his family fortune violently (with the full force of all the factory workers) and forces Rajesh to sign another power of attorney which says that the money comes back to Vijay. Vijay uses the money to pay the auction bill. Priti, in a letter tells Rajesh that she can never forgive him for the atrocities he inflicted on her family and orders him to leave for good. Nisha reunites with Ajay when she learns that the divorce was not mutual and was engineered by her father, and the family finally comes together and lives happily as it used to be before.

Karan Arjun is a story of two brothers who set out to avenge their father's death but they are killed by their evil uncles, which leaves their mother widowed and alone. Years later, the brothers are reincarnated and join forces to bring justice to their mother.

Inspector Ram, an honorable police officer brings the infamous criminal Ballu to justice. However, Ballu escapes from the prison, ruining Inspector Ram`s reputation. In order to aid Ram, his fiance, Ganga goes into hiding to find Ballu. However, things get tricky when Ballu develops feelings for her.

Chowdry Sarang is an arrogant man who refuses to bow down before anyone. He has a sister Chand who falls in love with Shiva, who is from an agricultural family. Sarang kills Shiva and his family members. However, Shiva`s sister-in-law, Ganga (Rakhi Gulzar), stays alive and is pregnant that time. She vows to make Sarang bow down his head one day before her son. Also, her son and Sarang`s daughter would fall in love and her son would therefore become Sarang`s son-in-law and thus make him bow down his head. Whether or not Ganga fulfills her vow (Saugandh), forms the crux of the story.

Sharda is enraged and eyes vengeance when her husband is murdered by his two cousins, Bhishamber and Bhanu causing her and her two young sons to be thrown out of their house. One of her sons, Ram grows up to be a policeman, while her second son, Lakhan turns out to be a rather ignoble man. If the family wants to stand by their vow of vengeance, Ram will have to compel his brother to mend his ways, and stay away from Bhanu and Bhishamber.

Arjun Yadav return from the city after completing his studies to get settled in his village with his family consisting of his mother Devi Chaudaran, his older brother Amrit and sister. Arjun finds out that Amrit and Thakur Bhanwar Singh does not get along quiet well and attempts to be a peace-maker between the two. One day situation takes a turn for the worse when Amrit is killed, Devi Chaudaran loses her senses, Arjun's sister is raped and he himself is beaten and tied to a tree. Arjun is then rescued by some sympathetic villagers and run off with his childhood friend Makan Malla in the deep ravines only to turn an outlaw whose only motive is to avenge the killings of his family members. —gavin (racktoo@hotmail.com) City educated and peace-loving Arjun would love to have the Thakur, his brother and the rest of the villagers to live in harmony. Villagers who empathize with bandits rescue him and take him to their hideout in the deep ravines. There he meets bandits who were his childhood friends, who have turned into outlaws due to the sufferings inflicted on them by Thakur and his men. There are the good guys and the goons. The plot begins with the murder of an union leader, Acharya which leads to a gang whose members are identified by a gold medal with the gang's logo. Enter the head of Secret Services, David, a mysterious figure who weaves a web to bring the gang to book, including the mastermind. Gopal, a young officer is tasked with the job. To support him Dimple (David's niece) alias Shoba plays the girlfriend of Gopal and acts as a communication conduit. When Bindu a nightclub dancer is murdered and Gopal become the prime suspect Gopal joins the gang and earns the trust of the leader. Exploring the netherworld of drugs, stolen antiques, smuggling of gold and silver, creating social and religious tensions he learns the innermost secrets of the gang. Is Gopal a double agent, or has he found the lure of power, money and corruption irresistible? Has he turned triple? Will Shoba play along with Gopal's deceit? While some of the plot transitions leave the viewer baffled and edits incomprehensible, the overall story line is a product of its times, credible and entertaining. —"MG" Gopalan

Orphaned Sohan Lal is a wealthy businessman based in Bombay. While on vacation in Kashmir, he meets with beautiful Neela, and after a few misunderstandings both fall in love, and get married. When they return to Bombay, his Manager, V.K. Saxena asks him to travel to London for some business, which he does. Three months later when he returns home, he finds that Neela has not come to receive him at the airport, then on the way home, he is attacked, abducted, and placed in a cell, where a woman, Gulabiya, tells him that she is his sweetheart. With her help he manages to escape, has an accident, ends up in hospital, where he gets to meet a woman who calls him her son. Baffled and exasperated at these turn of events, he returns home to get a very cold response from Neela, who is about to inherit Rs.70 Lakhs from her deceased uncle. While Sohan decides to find out what exactly is going on, and why his life is in shambles, he does not know that this knowledge may well cost him his life. —rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com)

Circa British rule in India, wealthy DIG of Police is approached by Devdutt, a poor freedom fighter, who would like his daughter, Janki, to get married to the DIG's son, Ratan. The DIG and his wife Rajlaxmi refuse to have to do anything with Devdutt, but Ratan refuses to marry anyone else. They eventually relent and agree to this marriage. Shortly after the marriage, riots ensue between the police and freedom fighters, and as a result the DIG is killed. Rajlaxmi blames Devdutt for his death, and asks a pregnant Janki to leave her house. Unable to stand up for his wife, Ratan remains a silent spectator while his wife is thrown out. Janki goes to live with her father, who eventually passes away, and it is then Janki gives birth to a son, Rajesh. Years later, Rajesh has grown up, drives a truck, and is in love with a local shop-keeper, Chanda, who he would like to marry. Janki would like her son to go and meet his dad, and when Rajesh does so, Rajlaxmi arranges a pompous welcome for him with open arms, hoping that he will leave his mother and stay on with her. But Rajesh refuses to do this unless Rajlaxmi apologizes to Janki. An enraged Rajlaxmi refuses to do so, and asks Rajesh to leave. Rajesh and Chanda get married, and soon Chanda gets pregnant. Then the police arrest Rajesh, for which he may face several years in prison. He is held in the local police station. The truth does prevail, the real culprit is caught, and Rajesh is let go. He returns home to find out that everything is not the same anymore. Chanda has given birth a baby boy, and now lives with Rajlaxmi, and refuses to return home. Rajesh must now find out what compelled Chanda to leave Janki and go to live with Rajlaxmi. —rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com)
