Sanam Malhotra's family becomes wealthy after selling land. When they oppose her romance with Karan, son of a bank manager, the couple elopes. After being rescued by Uncle Joe, Sanam discovers Karan has turned to smuggling. Sanam Malhotra studies in a hostel, while her parents, Surendra and Sushma, and brother, Jatin, live in Bombay in a small flat. Things change for the Malhotras when they are able to sell a large plot to the builders of a five star hotel. They move up in life and buy a bungalow and several cars and arrange for Sanam to stay with them. But these material possessions does make them a little snobbish, as Jatin cannot hear of his friend, Karan, the son of Bank Manager, Amar Nath, for falling in love with his sister. Surendra has Karan arrested for being near Sanam. Independent minded Sanam has also fallen in love with Karan, and when she is imprisoned by Surendra, both elope, much to chagrin of Surendra, who is aware that widowed Amar is having an affair with a woman named Prema Mohan. Surendra & Jatin with the help of Vishnu Dada and his goons hunt them down, but the lovebirds are rescued by Uncle Joe, a friend of Karan. After being rescued, they are asked by Joe to take a holiday. What Sanam does not know is that Karan has taken to smuggling so that he can rich as the Malhotras. The question remains will Sanam join forces with Karan as his crime partner, or will she oppose him, and thereby end their short-lived romance. —rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com)

Although India obtained freedom from the British in 1947, Goa and its territories are still ruled by the Portuguese. A group of revolutionaries want a free Goa and are thus wanted by the Portuguese administration. Among them are Purandare, Narvekar, and Dinanath, and when Dinanath's whereabouts are known to the police, he escapes with his young son Ramdas and goes to their hideout. With Purandare's assistance they manage to escape, but they're shot. A horrified Ramdas watches Purandare shoot his father dead, and this is how he starts hating revolutionaries. Ramdas changes his name to Ronnie, befriends a girl named Julie, and grows up taking up crime as his career. He soon prospers and lets the villagers also prosper with him. Then when the Police Commissioner is shot dead, Ronnie helps the authorities apprehend his killer, a young man named Shekhar. He is arrested, tried in Court, and sentenced to be hanged. At this point Ronnie finds out that the people he assisted in the past are all against him and sympathize with the revolutionaries. He moves on to crime in a big way but is eventually cheated and ends up killing the boss and taking his place. He becomes a rich businessman overnight who deals in gold. This takes him towards the Portuguese government, which makes him a police officer. His first assignment includes killing some senior wanted revolutionaries. He starts to influence the villagers to become like him. When the police commissioner is shot dead, he helps the police apprehend the killer: a revolutionary named Shekhar, who is tried in court, proven guilty, and sentenced to be hanged. Sharda and her sister Poornima alias Nima live with their widowed father. Since both have come of age, he first arranges Sharda's marriage with a businessman named Balraj Kohli. Subsequently, Poornima also marries a wealthy young man. But fate has other plans for Nima, for her husband tragically passes away in an accident, leaving her widowed. When Sharda sees her sister in a widow's garb, she loses her mental balance and is institutionalized in Pune Mental Hospital. After approximately 14 years, an inmate strikes Sharda on her head, she loses consciousness for several days. When she regains her senses, she remembers everything that happened 14 years ago, but is unable to recollect her life in the mental hospital. Her treating psychiatrist is ready to discharge her to the care of her husband and her family. Sharda comes home, everything is about the same, except that her son, Sagar, has grown up and is about to be engaged to Sarita Sethi, and Nima still wears a widow's garb. A few months later Sharda sees Nima clad in a colorful saree, wearing a bindiya with sindoor in her forehead, and starts suspecting that everything is not it seems to be. She then finds out that Balraj had re-married and also has a son from his second marriage named Babbu. As details come flooding into her she experiences wild paranoia, is unable to trust anyone, as no one is what they claim to be, and she feels alone, lost, helpless, and distrustful. The rest of the family hover around - waiting to see what the new outcome is to be with Sharda and her struggle to fit into a family that has not been her's for 14 years.
