Govind (Amitabh Bachchan) and Rajesh (Vinod Mehra) (who is limp in one leg) are two brothers who are happy being brought up by their considerably older stepbrother Hari (Sanjeev Kumar). However, when Hari has to leave home for two months to complete his law degree, his newly married wife Seema (Tanuja), jealous of her husband's excessive affection for the two, ill-treats them, forcing them to leave home and escape to Bombay. Hari returns back after 2 months and realizes that Seema drove his step brothers away from the house. He is very angry. After days spent doing menial labor. They are then picked up by a stranger, who puts them to work as beggars. They manage to escape after a few days. The two brothers are finally given a home by the widower Rahim Chacha (A. K. Hangal), who has a son Anwar (Ali Masood) and daughter Farida (Madhu Malini). Govind takes on the responsibility of providing for his brother's education by becoming the taxi-driver Chhotu Ustad. Govind earns all day and then massages Rajesh's legs at night.. The years pass and Rajesh's legs are all better now. Jagan (Mehmood) is Govind's friend, who sells bananas on marine drive. Govind's car has a unique quality that it can sense if passengers are carrying any illegal stuff or not. One day Govind picks up Mary (Parveen Babi) who is heavy pregnant and offers to drop her to Parel. But the car wont start. Later Govind finds that Mary (who had recently moved across the street from Govind) uses her pregnant belly to transport illegal country made liquor across town. Mary is angry that Govind destroyed her stills. She hires Peter and his goons to abduct and trash Govind. But Peter tries to force himself upon Mary and only timely intervention from Govind saves her. Mary apologizes to Govind. Govind and Mary start dating. Rajesh, however, is ambitious and foppish (he tells his friends that his brother is an international business). Manju (Bindiya Goswami) is Rajesh's fellow student and is tired of his boasts. To embarrass Rajesh she invites Govind to the college's annual fest where Rajesh is performing in a play. Rajesh gets really nervous when he sees Govind in the audience and fluffs his lines. The audience turns on Rajesh and Govind starts a fight with the entire auditorium. Govind continues to help the police by chasing and catching criminals involved in transporting drugs and other contraband across Bombay. In one of the chases Govind sees Anwar in the smuggler's car. Anwar convinces Govind that he only works for a transport company and that Govind has a case of mistaken identity. Manju and Rajesh start dating. Rajesh is good at cards and is introduced to gambling by his room mate. Rajesh wants to get rich quick and doesn't want to work hard for money. Govind runs into Hari at his office and instantly recognizes him. He goes to Hari's house and meets Seema. But Seema is rude and tells Govind that Hari is a famous lawyer now and he is only a taxi driver. She throws Govind out and warns him never to try and contact Hari again. Verma's brother Bansi (Prem Chopra), who has actually been instrumental in fixing up this marriage (Bansi had seen Rajesh playing cards at his club and casino) (Bansi asks the casino manager, who is close to Seth, to propose the match. Seth hates Bansi as he is opposed to Bansi's illegal activities). Seth likes Rajesh, but wants Rajesh to live with them after the marriage. Govind is not agreeable, but Rajesh spurns his brother and the latter's pride by marrying the rich Seth Verma's (Pinchoo Kapoor) daughter Manju (Bindiya Goswami) and staying at his father-in-law's mansion. To pay for the wedding, Govind had mortgaged his taxi and eventually loses it. Rahim uses his EPF retirement money to get the cab back. Bansi employs the unsuspecting Rajesh to carry on a drug-smuggling trade using the vehicles of the Verma Transport Company, owned by the Seth. Meanwhile Rajesh's univ results are declared and Govind finds that Rajesh has failed. Govind confronts Rajesh, who ends up insulting Govind saying that he has no ambition. One of the smuggling operations is foiled by the police (The truck topples in a chase), and Anwar, also mixed up in his business, is left seriously injured. Bansi's men attempt to kidnap Anwar to destroy evidence when Govind is not at home. In the skirmish that ensues, Rahim is shot fatally. In the aftermath of the tragedy and Rajesh's realization of how he has been used by Bansi, Rajesh seeks his brother's mercy. However, at this very moment, Bansi murders Seth Verma and tries to frame Rajesh for it. However, it is Govind who is found at the scene of the crime (he was called there by Bansi's casino manager, who was mimicking Seth Verma on the phone) and accused of murder. The judge at his trial is Hari, who is now one of the leading legal eagles in the city. In the course of the trial, the real identity of the accused and his brother are revealed to Hari. Hari adjourns the court and meets Govind in the locker that night. Hari knows that Govind is innocent and decides to fight the case. Hari now steps down as judge and becomes Govind's defense attorney. Through a series of astute investigations, he unearths the truth. Hari is able to prove that Bansi was the murderer as his watch was photographed near the dead body, before Bansi came back 30 mins after the murder and took the watch back. The police had not informed anyone about the murder for 4 hrs, so it is not possible that Bansi knew from anyone else that Seth Verma had been dead. Bansi, cornered, attempts to shoot Hari and escapes the courtroom, but is finally tracked down by Govind in his beloved taxi 'Basanti'. As the smuggler is arrested, the three brothers are reconciled.

Sitapur-based Mangala lives with her widowed mother and seven brothers, and is of marriageable age. Wealthy Banke Thakur would like to wed her, but she rejects him. She looks after an injured male, Anand, from Latpur, and after he recovers both fall in love with each other, and get married. She re-locates to live with his family, consisting of his brother, Mukund, and childless Bhabhi, Rani, who is very displeased as she wanted Anand to marry her gorgeous sister, Rambha; while Banke takes it upon himself to ensure that this marriage breaks up. Mangala continues to live in this household, and soon becomes pregnant. Mukund and Anand decide to travel for business purposes but promise to return before the baby is due. Anand Narayan comes from a poor family, which consists of his wife, Gayetri, daughter, Kamla, and two sons Madhu and Govind. Through hard work, Anand starts on his way to success. He meets with Nekiram, who becomes his business partner, and also his samdhi (in-law) as his daughter is in love with Madhu. Both get married in a simple ceremony. After this marriage, both Nekiram, and Anand and his family work hard at preparing food in a small dhaba, which soon grows into a restaurant, then a larger fancier restaurant, finally a five star hotel. Now Anand and his family are all wealthy and live in a palatial home. Anand gets to talking to Bhagwan Shri Kishan, who regularly visits him and asks about him and his family. Anand proudly takes all the credit, and asks Kishan to accompany him to see his success and his hotel. Bhagwan Kishan declines, but agrees do so later. Things don't go quite as well for Anand, when he finds out that Nekiram has been cheating him. Nekiram leaves the house, but Madhu accompanies him. Then Anand finds that Govind has been squandering money and time on women and alcohol; and to top his disappointment Kamla gets pregnant. When Bhagwan Kishan comes to visit Anand again, he admits that he is a failure, his health is poor, and his family are all strangers to him. Lord Kishan advises Anand that this is his life and he must learn from the Mahabharat, and that every life is a struggle, which is confused by relations and near and dear ones, and also by one's ego. Once the ego is removed, then only one can see clearly. But will Anand be able to understand and carry out what Lord Kishan is asking him to? Maharaj Singh (Shammi Kapoor) is a proud owner of several derby-winning stallions, and lives in a palatial farmhouse with his wife, Rukmini (Indrani Mukherjee) and young son, Chimpu. Chimpu has a birth mark (in the shape of a trident) on his back. Maharaj Singh is a champion horse rider and prides himself on taming the wildest of beasts. One day robbers attack his farmhouse with a view of stealing the stallions, but Maharaj fights them, killing the son of the leader of the robbers, Maan Singh (Madan Puri). Maan Singh swears to avenge the death of his son and abducts Chimpu. Chimpu was 2 years old and the night he was abducted, was his birthday. Servant Ram Singh (Ramesh Deo) gets blamed & kicked out of the household by Maharaj Singh. Ram Singh used to look after Chimpu inside the house and was with him all the time. Even at the time of Chimpu's abduction, Ram Singh was sleeping in Chimpu's room and hence was the prime suspect. Maharaj Singh spends all available resources to find Chimpu, but without any success. 20 years later Ram Singh is at a circus & finds a recently released convict, Badal (Amitabh Bachchan) whose mannerisms match Maharaj Singh. Badal has the same accurate aim with a gun that Ram Singh had last seen in Chimpu. Ram Singh was running a shooting game arcade and was paying 20:1 odd if the shooter could hit 6 balloons with 12 shots from a pellet gun. Badal corrects the shooting sight of the gun and hits 12 targets in a row. Badal also says the same things that Maharaj used to say. Badal can ride horses like an expert. Badal has taken to a life of crime to support the poor villagers who are dependent on his meager income. Badal used to work at a racecourse but was fired for someone else's mistake and was jailed for the same. Badal was released as part of a leniency declared on India's Independence Day and that day, he had decided that honesty does not pay. Badal has no birth mark, but Ram Singh tells Badal about Maharaj and Chimpu. Ram Singh convinces Badal to get a tattoo (for which they pay Rs 5 to a tattoo artist) & to pose as Chimpu to inherit the wealth. In exchange Ram Singh will get a 50-50 share of the Maharaj's wealth. Ram Singh teaches Badal everything about Chimpu's childhood memories and toys. Ram Singh tells him about Chimpu's mother Rukmini, a toy horse, a cradle made of sandalwood, stud farms, horses and the fact that the parents have been waiting for Chimpu for 20 years. Badal reaches the Maharaj's village by train and travels on foot to his estate. On the way he runs into college students camping in the jungle protesting the cutting of forest to create roads in the hills. Sunita is part of the group, and Badal is instantly smitten with her. The students invite Badal for a meal, impressed with his singing skills. Badal saves Maharaj's daughter's Sunita (Saira Bano) life from a stray horse that had escaped the Maharaj's stables & slowly they fall in love. At this point he doesn't know Sunita is Maharaj's daughter. Badal returns the horse to the Maharaj's stables and gets a job as a farm hand on his estate. Sher Singh (Jagdish Raj) is the manager of the Maharaj's stables and is impressed with Badal's skills with horses. Badal learns that Rukmini has not emerged from the shock of losing her child. She is still bedridden and sick. Maharaj Singh doesn't visit his stud farms anymore as he devotes all his time to the care of Rukmini. Badal goes in front of Maharaj & shows off his shooting & horse skills & impresses him. He then infuriates Maharaj in a series of incidents. At first, he disrespects a gift given by the Maharaj by shooting it with Maharaj's own gun, and then proceeds to insult the Maharaj's horses, which prompts him to tear Badal's clothes off & he sees the birth mark. This prompts Maharaj & Rukmini to accept Badal as their long-lost son, Chimpu. But at this point Badal also learns that Sunita is Maharaj's daughter & technically his sister. Sunita is confused because at some level she refuses to believe that Badal is her brother. As the news spreads Maan Singh wonders how Maharaj got a new son. Maharaj starts involving Badal in his business and starts handing over the reins of the offices to him. Now Ram Singh starts blackmailing Badal for his share. But Badal is moved by the trust & respect Maharaj Singh gives him & refuses to taint that by giving in to Ram Singh's demands. When Ram Singh tells the truth to Maharaj, at that moment Badal also professes the truth to Sunita. Maharaj confronts Badal & Badal accepts his folly. But Maharaj can't kick him out as this news would kill his wife who has grown fond of having her son back after 20 long years of separation. Maharaj also notices that Badal had every opportunity to steal money from Maharaj, as he was handling transactions worth several Lakhs, but every cent was accounted for, and all the money was safely deposited in Maharaj's accounts. Maan Singh approaches Badal & says that he has the real son Chimpu & asks Badal for Rs 2 Lakhs to keep his silence. Maan Singh says that he wanted to kill Chimpu after abducting him but was swayed by the child's innocence. Chimpu was raised by Maan Singh as his own son Suraj (Vinod Khanna) (& who is now a robber). Badal gives the Rs 2 Lakhs to Maan Singh, but kidnaps Chimpu when everybody in Maan Singh's camp is asleep. This lures Maan Singh to the estate & brings Maan Singh, Suraj, Badal in front of Maharaj. Maan is defeated in gun fight & he is forced to admit that Suraj is none other than Chimpu. When Maharaj's wife finds out, she forgives Badal & accepts him as son-in-law. Suraj agrees to leave Maan Singh & come back to his real family.

Rani is a child who is being brought up by her mother, Kamla, as her dad has gone out of the town on business. Both mother and daughter live with their cruel and selfish relatives. One day Kamla gets the news that her husband is returning, and she is overjoyed. This joy turns to sorrow when she finds out that he has passed away in an accident. Shortly, thereafter she too passes away, leaving poor Rani at the hands of the cruel relatives. Rani loves her parents, as they are her world, and she undertakes a journey into the netherworld to try and bring her parents back to life. Amit, an educated young man, an owner-driver of his taxi comes to Sapna's rescue when she is under threat and gratitude turns into love. The alcoholic step-father has designs on Sapna, and tries to exert his authority on her, resulting in Sapna assaulting him. As a result, she serves a jail term. Amit wants to marry Sapna but his family won't allow him to marry an ex-convict. How many more barriers will Sapna and Amit have to break in order to fulfill their love? Mohan (Amitabh Bachchan) falls in love with Asha (Mala Sinha). Asha is the daughter of Shiv Dayal (Madan Puri) (who is a peon at a local college). In fact he is a peon at the same college where Asha studies and keeps this a secret. He tells Asha that he wants her to be successful and doesn't want his poverty to be a roadblock to her success. Shiv sees Asha and Mohan together in college and tells Mohan to focus on studies. Mohan comes to Asha's house to ask for her hand in marriage and realizes that Shiv is Asha's father.. Shiv agrees to the marriage, but wants Mohan to check with his parents. Mohan writes them a letter saying he is marrying Asha and knows they will never accept her.. Mohan mother and her brother are greedy for dowry and know that a peon wont be able to give anything. The marriage is not accepted by Mohan's mother (but his dad (Keshto Mukherjee) is more docile and agreeable). She shows that she is OK with the wedding, but then Mohan leaves for Delhi for his IAS exam. Once Mohan leaves, his mom leaves Asha with Shiv and refuses to take Asha with her to their home. Asha is pregnant and her father Shiv Dayal, realizing that no man will marry Asha second time, decides to make her a collector. Mohan meanwhile had moved to South India, where he later married Seema (Aruna Irani) as he was informed through his parents that Asha died. They live a happy life with their two children and Seema's father (Nazir Hussain). Mohan's mom died after his 2nd marriage and her brother stole all their family property and lost it in gambling and booze.. Mohan works as a clerk in the collector's office (which means he failed the IAS exam). A new collector arrives at the office, and it turns out to be Asha. They tend to work together.. Asha is a strict operator, but treats Mohan with kindness and deference. Asha wears a Mangalsutra and has a kid named Ramesh.. The office is flush with rumors about who the husband is.. Mohan asks for forgiveness for the fraud his family brought on them both. He wants to meet his kid. Asha keeps running into Mohan outside of the office and Mansukh (an office employee) spots them. Mohan goes to Asha's home to meet Ramesh, but is thrown out by Shiv Dayal. Asha is still humble and has lots of respect for Mohan, who is still her husband.. Mansukh brings his kid to the office since he is a widower. The kid tears up important papers and thus Asha forbids him from bringing the child into the office. Mansukh (Johnny Walker) is angry and with his friends, he spreads a rumor across stating that there is an affair between Asha and Mohan. This rumor reaches Seema (Mansukh calls Seema personally) and she is completely disturbed. Mohan misplaces a critical file, for which he should be dismissed (as it would cause loss of rs 2 Lakhs to the govt). But Asha is torn, as she does not want to boss over Mohan.. at the same time, she cannot overlook the rules applicable in the matter.. She gives Mohan 2 days to find the file. Seema discovers the secret of Mohan's affair with Asha. Seems sends her son, who studies in the same class as Ramesh, to Asha's house to check if Mohan is spending time with Asha.. Office employee Dubey takes bribes and hence is never promoted. Dubey aligns with Shiv Dayal and says he will help him bring down Mohan, in exchange for Dubey getting promoted to Mohan's post of head clerk. Dubey slips a box of money in Mohan's bag and makes an anonymous phone call to the office manager Jagdish. The Manager calls the police and Mohan is searched in front of Asha, revealing the bag of money with rs 5000. The bag also has the visiting card of the company whole file Mohan had misplaced. Asha orders Mohan's suspension. Mohan is under financial distress, so Asha sends some money via Suresh (Seema's son) to Seema, but she is offended and sends the money right back. As luck would have it Mansukh's son finds the missing file in office, hidden between magazines. The matter is brought to Asha, who immediately re-instates Mohan. Mohan finds that the bribe money (which Asha had given him to deposit in the official treasury), was wrapped in a drawing paper that he had seen in Asha's house. Mohan confronts Asha at her house.. Ashs convinces her that she is not the one wanting revenge against Mohan. After much turmoil, Seema finds out that Asha and Mohan had married 10 year back before her marriage to Mohan (she finds a photo behind the photo of her own wedding to Mohan). Seema thinks that Mohan cheated on her and got married to Asha very recently. She calls Asha and Ashs confirms that she and Mohan are married, but she doesn't listen to her full explanation. Seema runs away to commit suicide. Ashs comes to Seema's house and finds the situation.. She goes after to save Seema. Asha finds Seema on a mountain where blasting is taking place. Asha tells Seema the whole truth. Blasts take place and Seema is blinded and Asha is badly injured.. Asha gives her eyes to Seema, whose eye-sight went in the accident in which Asha is injured. Asha dies shortly thereafter. The ending scenes show Mohan, Seema, her father, Asha's father, and three kids (two Seema's and one Asha's) altogether paying homage to Asha.

India is in a state of war with Japan and former Colonel Kapoor's sons, Rajan and Ram are both with the Indian Armed Forces. While Rajan is a Wing Commander with the Indian Air Force, Ram is a Major with the Indian Army. Rajan is in love with a doctor named Usha Choudhury, and both plan to get married. Then Usha meets with Ram, who unknowingly falls head over heels in love with her. Before anything can be finalized, Rajan is asked to bomb a secret Japanes airport located in a mountainous valley. While carrying out his duties, he finds out that his mission has been compromised, unable to return, his plane is shot down and he is believed to be dead. The Indian Army wants to destroy this secret airport and sends a crack Commando unit under Major Ram, who sets out to carry out this task. Haria lives with his widowed and elderly grandmother at a tea estate. He has no knowledge of his biological father, as his mother died at the time of his birth. He now works as a Mahout (Elephant driver) at the tea estate, with elephant-friend, Raja. He meets and falls in love with a gypsy girl, Gulabi, and both want to get married. But Gulabi has another suitor, none other than Ajay, the only son of the tea estate owner. When Ajay finds out that Gulabi loves Haria, he plans to get rid of Haria, but fails. He waits for the right moment, and has his men abduct Gulabi. But before he could have his way with her, she is rescued by Raja, but Ajay subsequently shoots Raja to death. An enraged Haria wants to kill Ajay in return, but Ajay's dad stops him from doing so. Then Ajay's dad finds out a secret about his past life, and decides to change his last will and testament. Ajay finds out about this and lays in wait with a shotgun to kill his very own father - and anyone else who dares to stand in his way.

As both are shunned by everyone they become friends but then Bhola is blamed for stealing valuables, accused and beaten for writing a love-letter to Renu, and is beaten even more before his exams. Then things dramatically change after Bhola graduates, and a wealthy businessman from Singapore arrives and announces that he is Bhola's father. A man regrets his decision of refusing to marry the woman he loves. In a nation crippled with poverty and crime, young Saraswatichandra is brought up by his rather cruel step-mother, and eventually decides to shun materialistic life. Hoping to get him to change his mind, his father arranges his marriage with Kumud Sundari, but he remains adamant. When Kumud comes to know, she writes to him, they exchange letters, he comes to meet her and both fall deeply in love with each other. He returns home, makes preparation for the wedding but his step-mother instigates his father against him, compelling him to forsake everything, and writes to Kumud's family accordingly. He changes his mind and goes to meet with Kumud but finds she is now married to Pramadh. A tearful Kumud re-locates to live with her husband and her family, but finds her husband unsophisticated, uneducated, alcoholic and womanizer who frequents brothels. Then Saraswatichandra re-enters her life when he gets employed by her in-laws under the name of Navinchandra. He notices her silent anguish but is unable to do anything while she decides to destroy all evidence of her involvement with him. A family experiences changes after a movie star moves in next to their house. Retired school-teacher and widower, Dinanath, lives a middle-classed lifestyle along with three sons: Shankar, his wife Parvati and five children; Ram, his wife, Sita, and two children; and Kanhaiya and his wife, Radha. While Shankar teaches music in a college, Ram is a Court Clerk, and Kanhaiya a Salesman.
