Dev (Prithviraj Sukumaran) falls in love with Ragini (Aishwarya Rai), a spunky classical dancer who is as unconventional as him. They get married and he takes up his new post in Lal Maati, a small town where the word of law is not the police but Veeraiya (Vikram), a tribal who has shifted the power equation of the place.

A son decides to avenge the murder of his father, an army officer, who was falsely framed and killed by three corrupt officers. However, as the fate has it, he ends up falling in love with the daughter of one of the murderers.

Ramanathan (Muthaiah) from Jankanur, Karaikudi's Chettiar community was adopted despite living parents. Married to Visalakshi, they cope with losing their baby and yearn for a child. Muthiah (Arvind Swamy) and his wife Visalakshi (Gouthami) are a loving couple, and they come across Saroji (Ranjitha) who with no one to go for, takes refuge in Muthiah's house. Muthiah and Saroji develop soft corner towards each other. The rest is what transpires between the trio, exploring the nuances of an extra-marital affair.

A professor/scientist (Prabhu) develops a formula that enables the soul to move out of a body into the closest dead species. He accidentally exchanges bodies with his lookalike college student (also Prabhu). The student refuses to switch back into his body, so that he can get the professor to sit in on an important examination as his double. Johnnie shares a good relationship with his brother who studies in another city. When his brother visits him, he convinces Johnnie to start studying again. The film gets its title from Mammootty's character's role Johnnie Varghese. He has a brother Bobby Varghese who studies in Bangalore degree college for Economics. A visit from his brother and friends changes Johnnie's mind and he joins college despite of his age. From there he clashes with Swamy who rules the college with his drug gang.
