N 1992 LA, the situation is tense as it is close to Rodney King's verdict. In this situation, Mercer has just gotten out of prison and is trying to get close to his son Antoine. When Antoine was growing up, he lived with his mother and grandmother. Antoine holds this against Mercer for not being there for him as a father. Now that Antoine's mother is dead, Antoine lives with Mercer. Mercer has been in prison and has a reputation. Therefore, he is doing everything he can to ensure Antoine does not make the same life choices as Mercer. That day, Mercer asks Antoine to get back home after school as the situation can worsen on the streets depending on Rodney King's verdict. In a store nearby, Mercer runs into his boys, who were with him back in his violent days. It is clear Mercer is trying to change and does not want to do anything to put him back in jail. Later, Mercer returns to work, where he gets a second chance at life thanks to his colleague and friend Joe. Simultaneously, a small-time thief, Lowell, and his sons Riggin and Dennis want to rob Pluton Metals, as platinum is much more expensive than gold. A brand-new vault has been installed to store the platinum bars. Both Lowell and Riggin discuss how to break the vault and steal the platinum bars. The first problem is that if anyone presses a panic button inside the security office, the vault gets covered with a steel cap. Unless the LAPD arrives and unlocks it, the vault will be encased. Despite that, Riggin is confident that they can pull off the heist. However, Lowell has never done such a big job, so he fears security. Sadly, Riggin Lowell does not think it's worth the risk. That day, Antoine gets home early and watches the news. During this time, Mercer is at Pluton Metals working when the news breaks out that the police officers in Rodney King's case are found not guilty. The employees of Pluton Metals are asked to get home safely as riots have begun on the streets. At home, Antoine is infuriated listening to the verdict and goes out on the streets. This is the perfect opportunity for Lowell and the gang to pull off the heist, so they prepare the tools to get to Pluton Metal. Since Mercer lives in the hood, he asks Joe if Mercer can bring Antoine to Pluton Metals, as it is safer for him. Joe agrees to give security clearance when Mercer arrives. When Mercer gets home, the riots are aggressive, and Antoine is not home. Worried about Antoine, Mercer searches for Antione on the streets. Mercer runs into his old buddy D-Ville, who gives Mercer a gun for his safety. However, Mercer refuses as he wants nothing to do with his old life. Meanwhile, Lowell and the group have reached the gates of Pluton Metal. The security guard asks Riggin the purpose of the visit. Riggin gets out and uses a Taser on the security guard. The group ties the man to a pole nearby and enters Pluton Metal. What they don't expect is to find someone inside the building. Unfortunately, Joe is in the wrong place at the wrong time as he faces the robbers. When Joe reaches for his gun, one of the thieves fires at Joe. Meanwhile, Mercer finds Antoine and drives him to Pluton Metal. In the car, Mercer tells Antoine that he is scared Antoine will turn into a mini Mercer, especially because Antoine feels deeply about the injustice and racism that is taking place around him. The robbers have begun their plan as they get to the vault. These guys don't know that Joe is still alive. He has activated the panic button. In a hurry, Riggin drives the forklift to stop the steel cap. By then, the cops are alerted. The cops fly through Pluton Metals and don't see any movement, so they head back. Immediately, Joe is found and killed by the robbers. When Riggin drives the forklift, he accidentally runs over Copen's leg. At this time, Riggin is worried about Copen, but Lowell only wants money. So they cut Copen's leg, and Dennis tends to Copen. As Mercer and Antoine drive by, the cops stop them. As they are black, they search them and the car thoroughly while letting white drivers go without asking anything. It is also tough for Mercer to see his son struggling against the cops. Inside Pluton Metals, the robbers have successfully broken the vault and are happy to see the platinum bars. Without knowing what is going on inside, Mercer and Antoine enter the building. Here, the duo splits as Antoine needs to use the washroom. In the washroom, Antoine comes face-to-face with Dennis, who holds a gun. At the same time, Mercer finds Joe dead in the security office. So Mercer grabs a spare weapon and runs, looking for Antoine. Mercer runs into Lowell's men at this time, and they fire at each other. Since Mercer knows the building well, he shuts off the power in that area, forcing the robbers to chase after Mercer cautiously. Luckily, Mercer hurts one of those men and escapes from the other. Now Dennis brings Antoine to his father, Lowell. At this time, Copen is struggling to survive and moaning, which infuriates Lowell. When questioned, Antoine lies to Lowell that he had come looking for his father. Antoine could not go home because the bus lines were cut off. On the same floor, Mercer listens to the conversation. When Copen gets loud, Lowell shoots him dead. Unfortunately, both Dennis and Antoine watch this act. Later, Mercer captures Riggin, tying him up to a railing. The robbers load up the van with platinum but realize that the engine rotor from the van is missing. One of the thieves finds Mercer, and they fight. In the end, Mercer kills the man who falls from the roof right in front of Lowell. Angered by this, Lowell decides to use Antoine to get back at Mercer. After that, Mercer relays everything that has happened to Riggin, who cannot believe Copen is dead. Meanwhile, Lowell uses Antoine by making Antoine speak on the loudspeaker. Now, Lowell asks Mercer to bring Riggin and the rotor to Lowell in exchange for Antoine's life. However, Riggin knows Lowell and warns Mercer that once Lowell gets what he wants, he will kill Antoine and Mercer. Mercer uses Riggin to save Antoine. At the loading docks, Mercer shows up with Riggin. The thieves take the engine rotor. Mercer wants his son Antoine, but Lowell threatens to shoot Antoine. So Mercer picks up the gun and shoots at Lowell first, but Lowell escapes. Mercer, Dennis, Antoine, and Riggin take the opportunity to get inside the van and drive away. Another car is in the building, so Lowell and the other thief chase after them. The annoying thing for Lowell is not that his sons are taken but that the platinum bars are in the van. In the shootout, Dennis is shot and loses a lot of blood. As Mercer is trying to drive to the hospital, Lowell and their partner start shooting at the van. Dennis is now dead. Fuming with anger, Riggin starts shooting at the car his father is in. One of the thieves is dead; however, Lowell fires at Riggin. Unfortunately, Mercer loses balance, and the van topples. When Lowell gets out, he kills Riggin. Next, Lowell is ready to fire at an unharmed Mercer when Antoine shoots Lowell from the back, killing him. Soon after, Antoine is shaking in fear, so Mercer takes away the gun and hugs his son. The father-son duo takes the car and drives away. (thanks to highonfilms)

Cromwell Jackson, an entrepreneur and major business owner, gains knowledge of Alice's predicament from his future self and will do anything to get information on the future from her. After immigrant Mireya Sanchez is deported, officer Max Brogan takes care of her little son, and brings him to the boy's grandparents in Mexico. Later the woman is found dead near the border. Brogan returns to the grandparents to tell them the bad news. Cole Frankel, a corrupt immigration officer, makes a deal with Australian immigrant Claire Shepard: he can have unlimited sex with her for two months, then she gets a green card. In the course of the two months he separates from his wife and wants to make the relationship with Shepard one of love, but she declines. He exempts her from completing the two months and arranges the green card. However, authorities find out and arrest him and Shepard is deported. His wife Denise Frankel adopts a little girl from Nigeria, who has already been in the detention center several years. Brogan has an Iranian colleague, Hamid Baraheri. Hamid's family disapproves of his sister having sex with a married man. Encouraged by his father his brother plans to beat them up, but he ends up killing them, and is arrested. South Korean teenager Yong Kim, who is about to be naturalized, reluctantly participates in a robbery with four others. Hamid kills the four in a shootout but lets him go. He lies to the authorities that there were only four robbers. Gavin Kossef, a young British immigrant, pretends to be a religious Jew, to get a job at a Jewish school, which allows him to stay in the U.S. In a test where he has to demonstrate his familiarity with the Jewish religion he does not perform properly, but a rabbi asked to assess it approves it, so that the immigrant passes the test. After the test, in private, the rabbi requires from the immigrant to take lessons from him to eliminate the deficiencies in his knowledge. Taslima Jahangir, a 15-year-old girl from Bangladesh, presents a paper at school promoting that people should try to understand the 9/11 hijackers. The school principal reports this to authorities. She is not charged for this, but it turns out that her parents and she are illegally in the U.S. One parent of choice can stay with the girl's two younger siblings, who are U.S. citizens because they were born in the U.S., the girl has to leave with the other parent to Bangladesh, even though she has lived there only until she was three. She leaves with her mother, and cannot even say goodbye to her father.

Malcolm Rivers (Pruitt Taylor Vince) is a psychotic killer awaiting execution for several vicious murders. His psychiatrist, Doctor Malick (Alfred Molina), has discovered a journal belonging to Rivers that may explain why he really committed the murders. With this late evidence brought forth, a new hearing takes place on a stormy night in which Malick will try to persuade the Judge to spare Rivers. Meanwhile, a group of ten strangers, through a number of circumstances, find themselves stranded in the middle of a storm in a remote motel in the Nevada desert. With the phone lines down due to the storm, the group prepare to spend the night, taking care of those that have been injured through their arrival. However, the group quickly finds that there is an unknown murderer present, killing off each of the guests and leaving behind one of the motel's room keys to be found, starting with Room 10's key and counting down. Back at the hearing, the contents of Malcolm's journal are revealed, indicating the prisoner suffers from an extreme case of Dissociative Identity Disorder, harboring ten distinct personalities. Malick is able to bring forth one of Malcolm's personalities, Ed (John Cusack), revealing that events at the motel are occurring inside Malcolm's mind, each personality being a distinct person though all sharing the same birth date. After hearing of events in the motel, Malick informs the Ed personality that he must find and eliminate the hostile personality in order to prevent Malcolm from being executed lest all the personalities be killed off. In the motel setting, as the group is dwindled down, Ed believes that the personality of Rhodes (Ray Liotta) is the murderer, and sacrifices himself to kill Rhodes, leaving only Paris (Amanda Peet) alive. When Malick demonstrates that that homicidal personality is dead, the judge decides to place Malcolm in a mental institution under Malick's care. As Malcolm is driven along with Malick to the institution, in Malcolm's mind, Paris has driven away from the motel to her hometown in Florida. As she tends an orange grove, she discovers the Room 1 motel key in the ground, and turns around to find the young boy Timmy standing behind her. Timmy, the true homicidal personality, had orchestrated all the deaths at the motel, and made it appear that he had been killed as well; he finishes his task by killing Paris, reciting Hughes Mearns's Antigonish. Now driven only by his last personality of Timmy, Malcolm strangles Malick, and the transport van runs off the side of the road.

A young George Jung (Johnny Depp) and his parents Fred (Ray Liotta) and Ermine (Rachel Griffiths) of Weymouth, Massachusetts. When George is ten years old, Fred files for bankruptcy and loses everything, but tries to make George realize that money is not important. As an adult, George (Johnny Depp) moves to Los Angeles with his friend "Tuna" (Ethan Suplee); they meet Barbara (Franka Potente), an airline stewardess, who introduces them to Derek Foreal (Paul Reubens), a marijuana dealer. With Derek's help, George and Tuna make a lot of money by retailing pot on the beaches. Kevin Dulli (Max Perlich), a college student back in Boston, visits them and tells them of the enormous market-and demand-for pot in Boston. With Barbara's help, they start bringing the drugs to Boston (Barbara starts by taking 25 pounds of pot to Boston per day on her flights, as her bags are not checked). The demand for the "good pot" skyrockets. As the demand grows, they decide to start buying the drugs directly from Mexico with the help of Santiago Sanchez (Tony Amendola), a Mexican drug lord. But two years later, George is caught in Chicago trying to import 660 pounds of marijuana and is sentenced to two years. After unsuccessfully trying to plead his innocence (by reciting the lyrics of Bob Dylan's "Pretty Boy Floyd (Woody Guthrie)") and insisting that he did no more than "cross an imaginary line with a bunch of plants"), George skips bail to take care of Barbara, who is suffering from, and eventually succumbs to, cancer. Her death marks the disbanding of the group of friends; even his friend, Tuna, flees their vacation home in Mexico and is never seen again. While hiding from the authorities, George visits his parents back in New England. While he is having a heart-to-heart talk with his father, George's mother calls the police, who come and arrest him. George is now sentenced to 26 months in a federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut. His cellmate Diego Delgado (Jordi Molla) has contacts in the Medellín cocaine cartel and convinces George to help him go into business. Upon his release from prison, George violates his parole conditions and heads down to Cartagena, Colombia to meet up with Diego. They meet with cartel officer Cesar Rosa to negotiate the terms for smuggling 15 kilograms (33 lb) to establish "good faith". As the smuggling operation grows, Diego gets arrested, leaving George to find a way to sell 50 kg (110 pounds) and get the money in time. George reconnects with Derek in California, and the two successfully sell all 50 kg in 36 hours, amassing a $1.35 million profit. George is then whisked off to Medellín, Colombia, where he finally meets the group's leader, Pablo Escobar (Cliff Curtis), who agrees to go into business with them. With the help of main middleman Derek, the pair becomes Escobar's top US importer. At Diego's wedding, George meets Cesar's fiance Mirtha (Penélope Cruz) and marries her. However, Diego resents George for keeping Derek's identity secret and pressures George to reveal his connection. George eventually discovers that Diego has betrayed him by cutting him out of the connection with Derek. Inspired by the birth of his daughter and chastened by a subsequent drug-related heart attack, George severs his relationship with the cartel and vows to leave the drug business forever. All goes well with George's newfound civilian life for five years, until Mirtha organizes a 38th birthday party for him. Many of his former drug associates attend, including Derek, who reveals that Diego eventually cut him out as well. The FBI and DEA raid the party and arrest George. Following George's conviction, he becomes a fugitive. Meanwhile, his bank account-heretofore under Manuel Noriega's protection in Panama-is seized. One night, he and Mirtha get into a fight while driving. They are pulled over by police and Mirtha tells them Jung is a fugitive and has stashed a kilogram of cocaine in his trunk. He is sent to jail for three years, during which time Mirtha divorces him and takes custody of their nine-year-old daughter, Kristina "Sunshine" Jung (Emma Roberts). Upon his release, George finds himself struggling to keep his relationship with his daughter on good terms. George promises Kristina a vacation in California and seeks one last deal to garner enough money for the trip. George completes a deal with former accomplices but learns too late that the deal had been set up by the FBI and DEA, with Dulli and Derek having leaked the nature and location of the action in exchange for pardons for their involvement in his prior actions. George is sentenced to 60 years at Otisville Correctional Facility in upstate New York. He explains in the end that neither the sentence nor the betrayal bothered him, but that he can never forgive himself for having to break a promise to his daughter. While in prison, George requests a furlough to see his dying father, Fred. His unforgiving mother denies the request, saying a visit would only upset Fred. George is given a tape recorder to record a final message to his father. In the message, George recounts his memories of working with his father, his run-ins with the law, and finally, too late, his understanding of what Fred meant when he said that money is not "real". The film closes with George as an old man in prison, imagining that his daughter (Jaime King) finally comes to visit him. She slowly fades away as a guard calls for George. The film concludes with notes indicating that Jung's sentence will not expire until 2015, and that his daughter has yet to visit him. The film's final image is a photograph of the actual George Jung.

In the fictional town of Garrison, New Jersey, located across the Hudson River from New York City near the George Washington Bridge, a number of residents are NYPD officers. Local sheriff Freddy Heflin (Sylvester Stallone) is secretly in love with Liz Randone (Annabella Sciorra), whose life he once saved after a car accident. Her rescue cost him the hearing in one ear and made him ineligible to become a New York City cop, as so many of his peers did, including Liz's abusive and unfaithful husband Joey Randone (Peter Berg). One night, Murray "Superboy" Babitch (Michael Rapaport), nephew of Lt. Ray Donlan (Harvey Keitel), leaves a bachelor party at Scores in Manhattan, driving over a discarded beer bottle. He's driving across the George Washington Bridge when his car is sideswiped by a couple of African-American teens. Babitch attempts to force them to pull over. The passenger points what Babitch thinks is a weapon and then the front tire of his car suddenly goes flat. Believing they have fired at him, Babitch shoots back. In an ensuing accident, Babitch collides with their car. Both of the teens are dead from the shots Babitch fired. During the ensuing investigation at the scene, Jack Rucker (Robert Patrick) is caught trying to plant a weapon in the teens' vehicle to justify the shooting. One of the paramedics seizes the gun from Rucker and tosses it over the side of the bridge. A brief fight breaks out but is quickly broken up. Worried about the repercussions on his career of having shot unarmed black teens, Babitch is persuaded by Donlan to fake his suicide. During the tussle over the planted gun, Ray pretends that Babitch has jumped off the bridge. Other corrupt police officers, including Detective Leo Crasky (John Spencer) and Frank Lagonda (Arthur Nascarella), fear that Babitch will resurface and testify about their corruption to Internal Affairs. While on radar patrol with his partner Cindy Betts (Janeane Garofalo), Ray zips by their position at about 70 mph. They pull him over, with Ray trying to muscle his way out of a speeding ticket with Betts, saying that he's above receiving a traffic citation. Heflin agrees to let him go but as Ray zooms off, Freddy sees Babitch stick his head up in the back seat. Internal Affairs investigator Lt. Moe Tilden (Robert De Niro) asks if Heflin will provide information on the corrupt cops who live in his town. Heflin is intimidated by the New York City cops and is reluctant to betray them, derailing Tilden's case. Superiors in the department, related to the corrupt cops, order Tilden to shut down the investigation. Although the Babitch cover-up appears to be initially successful, Ray is told by Patrolmen's Defense Association President Vincent Lassaro (Frank Vincent) that without a body, the case will not stay cold. Ray reluctantly decides that his nephew must be killed. During a loud party held by Ray at his house, Babitch is tipped off by his aunt Rose (Cathy Moriarty). Ray, Jack and Frank try to drown Babitch in Ray's hot tub. Babitch, grabbing a pistol he'd hidden in his waistband, fires off several shots just as Joe Randone, arriving at the party late, hears them. Babitch flees in to the night and goes to Freddy's house looking for help, but when he sees Freddy's friend (and fellow NYPD cop) Gary "Figgsy" Figgis (Ray Liotta), he flees. Later at the bar the police all hang out at, Joey disagrees with Ray over his plans to find & eliminate his nephew. Later that evening while on patrol, Joey Randone gets into a fight with a violent suspect and is thrown off a rooftop. While he is clinging to an TV aerial and calling for help. Donlan sees him and, out of payback for Randone carrying on an affair with his wife, closes the door to the building's atrium and deliberately stalls, trying to pick the lock as the other officers arrive to help. By the time the squad gets to the roof, Randone has fallen to his death. When Freddy realizes his mistake, he visits Tilden and is angrily told that the case was blown by his failure to cooperate sooner. As he leaves, Freddy sees a number of NYPD case files on the corrupt cops and steals them. He studies the files and realizes the extent of his friends' corruption. Deputy Cindy Betts decides to leave Garrison, frustrated by the New York City cops having turned the town into their own personal fiefdom. Freddy returns home to find Figgsy packing to leave, not wanting to be further involved. Freddy finds out that Figgsy burned down his own house for the insurance money, accidentally killing his crack-addicted girlfriend Monica (Mel Gorham). Heflin manages to convince Rose to reveal where Babitch is hiding in the town's water tower, then takes him to Garrison's jail. Heflin generously permits Deputy Bill Geisler (Noah Emmerich), who is nervous about protecting Babitch, to go home and take care of his pregnant wife. Heflin attempts to bring Babitch to New York City to turn over to Tilden, but Lagonda, Donlan and Rucker ambush him. Rucker cruelly fires a gun next to Freddy's good ear, deafening and disabling him. Babitch is taken, presumably to be killed. On foot and almost totally deaf, Heflin follows them to Donlan's house, where he quickly gets into a gunfight with Ray's man. Heflin kills both Jack and Frank. Heflin is then shot in the shoulder by Leo Crasky, but is saved by the arrival of Figgsy, who kills Crasky. In the house, Babitch is trying to escape through a window. Donlan sneaks up behind Heflin, but before he can fire, Figgsy shoots. Barely hearing the shot, Heflin turns and shoots. As Donlan lies dying on the floor, he mutters obscenities, to which Heflin replies simply: "I can't hear you, Ray." Figgsy and Heflin personally take Babitch to New York City and to Internal Affairs, refusing to allow any other cop to assist them. Tilden takes their prisoner into custody. After the scandal has been investigated and indictments handed down, Heflin, who has recovered hearing in his good ear, ends up looking at the New York City skyline from across the Hudson River. Deputy Geisler notifies him about a jack-knifed truck and Freddy goes back to work.

In 1959, a widower hires a warm-hearted housekeeper/nanny to care for his seven-year-old daughter. When Manny Singer's wife dies, his young daughter Molly becomes mute and withdrawn. To help cope with looking after her, he hires sassy housekeeper Corrina Washington, who coaxes Molly out of her shell and shows father and daughter a whole new way of life. With her unexpected passing, Annie Singer is survived by her Jewish husband Manny Singer, a jingle writer at an advertising agency, and their seven year old daughter, Molly Singer, who, in a manifestation of her grief, has retreated into herself by not speaking. Needing help around the house and with Molly, Manny is interviewing for a combination nine-to-five housekeeper/nanny. Among the less than stellar applicants, who Manny ends up hiring is Corrina Washington, in some respects overqualified in being a recent college graduate in English, but being underqualified in having no professional experience as a nanny and being less than a good cook. But Manny hired her in she and Molly having made some sort of connection. And she applied for the the job in needing the work despite her degree, she already working part-time cleaning houses. Her issue is that she is a black woman who would generally not be hired for the types of jobs she truly would want, her dream job, in being a lover of music, to write album liner notes. Corrina ends up being exactly who Molly needed to break out of her self-imposed shell. She is also who Manny needed as they end up making a home of sorts for Molly, and despite set up "friend" Jenny Davis seeing herself as a potential Mrs. Singer. But as Manny and Corrina start to fall for each other despite the many obstacles, it could be Molly already treating her like a mother and Corrina responding as such that could prove to be the problematic issue. —Huggo

Michael and Karen Carr (Kurt Russell) and (Madeleine Stowe) are a couple living in an upscale part of Los Angeles, and their peace of mind is upset by an intruder coming in through their skylight one night. The intruder doesn't take anything except Karen, briefly, as a hostage, before dumping her in the swimming pool and making his escape. The Carrs call in the police, one of whom, Pete Davis (Ray Liotta), takes an interest in the couple's case. Karen wants to sell the house and move as she can't sleep in her bed anymore. Michael convinces her by getting the security system recommended by Pete Pete cuts through department red tape and expedites speedy installation of a security system in the Carrs' house. Michael wants to get a gun for protection, but Pete argues against it. Pete knows the security code word for the system installed in Michael's house. Michael is working on a new deal to open a new club in the locality and is busy gathering investors for it. He has put everything he has into the venture. Roger Graham (Ken Lerner) is Michael's investor. Jerome Lurie (Carmen Argenziano) is Michael's lawyer. When Michael expresses an interest in getting revenge on the intruder, Pete invites him on a "ride-along" with his partner, Roy Cole (Roger E. Mosley). They have dinner together and then the officers attend to a domestic violence case. After dropping Cole off, Pete takes Michael out to arrest the man who broke into the Carrs' house, offering Michael a chance to take some revenge using Pete's nightstick. Michael declines, but Pete administers a vicious beating to the intruder, leaving Michael deeply suspicious of Pete's mental stability. He suggests that Pete get some professional help and, especially, stay far away from him and Karen in the future. Pete comes by and explains his story to Karen. He says the burglar tried to run away and resisted ahead, so things got ugly. Karen thanks Pete for arresting the burglar. Karen even introduces Pete to her friend Penny (Deborah Offner). Pete ignores Michael's suggestions and instead, begins to stalk the couple particularly Karen, with whom he's obsessed. Pete tries to get over Karen by having sex with a prostitute, but his mind is only on Karen. Pete meets Penny and gives a police talk to her teaching class at school. He meets Karen there and takes her out to lunch. Pete gets Michael's credit cards canceled and his car jacked with fake parking tickets. Pete even appears in the couple's bedroom one night while they are having sex, just to "check that everything's OK." Pete claims he was there since the alarm went off earlier in the night and this was just an innocent mistake. Michael thinks that Pete set off the first alarm and is responsible for the parking tickets and the canceled credit cards. Karen finds that Michael got the gun, despite her being against it. When Michael files a complaint against Pete's unwanted attentions to Capt. Russell Hayes (Andy Romano), Pete uses his police connections to destroy Michael's business reputation (Pete sends cops to Michael's investors asking them all kinds of questions about Michael, sending a signal that he might be under investigation). Michael's lawyer advises him to bribe Pete off, but Pete says he will go after Karen who doesn't deserve to be with Michael. Pete also threatens that he can kill Michael anytime he wants. Encountering bemused apathy from Pete's superiors in the LAPD (Michael has no evidence or witnesses), Michael turns to Cole, who orders his partner to cease his obsessing, see a shrink or face suspension (he threatens to report Pete to the department superiors). Pete then murders Cole, blaming it on a known criminal (during a drug bust in the criminal's home). Pete then frames Michael on drug charges by planting a supply of cocaine (half a pound) in the Carrs' house, enabling him to move in on Karen. Michael learns that Cole is dead as well. Jeopardizing his attorney's finances (the bail was set at $250K), Michael gets out on bail and takes matters into his own hands. Back at the Carr house, after finding that he has brutally murdered her friend Penny (as she won't let Pete into Karen's house while she was taking care of Karen), Karen rejects Pete, and Karen's rejection, plus her making an attempt to shoot him with Pete's gun, causes Pete to go berserk, dismissing her as worthless and attempting to sexually assault her. Michael returns home and an enraged Pete attacks him and Karen, attempting to kill them both. Pete and Michael fight, during which Pete accidentally causes the police to start heading over to the house after attempting to answer a phone call while acting as Michael (Michael had changed the password and hence Pete got caught out). Pete holds Michael at gunpoint outside of their bathroom where Karen is, and Pete demands that Karen open the door and escape with him or he'll kill Michael, while Michael begs Karen not to, saying Pete will kill him anyway. Karen ultimately bursts out of the room and uses an ornament to strike Pete in the face, allowing Michael to gain the upper hand, punching Pete and knocking him down the stairs. As Karen and Michael, who has Pete's now-loaded gun, wait for the police to arrive, Pete regains consciousness as Michael holds him at gunpoint. Pete tauntingly asks Michael if he'll arrest him as a citizen, but much to Pete's shock, Michael instead shoots Pete to death. A relieved Michael and Karen then go outside and watch as the police arrive at the scene.

Dr. Richard Sturgess and his colleagues cut red tape at a poorly-run hospital for veterans. A group of doctors in a veteran's hospital must contend with their hopeless situation: too many patients and not enough beds. The main cause of their problems is bureaucratic belt-tightening by the hospital administrators. Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella is inspired by a voice he can't ignore to pursue a dream he can hardly believe. Supported by his wife, Ray begins the quest by turning his ordinary cornfield into a place where dreams can come true. Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella hears a voice in his cornfield tell him, "If you build it, he will come." He interprets it as an instruction to build a baseball field on his farm, upon which appear the ghosts of Shoeless Joe Jackson and the other seven Chicago White Sox players banned from the game for throwing the 1919 World Series. When the voices continue, Ray seeks out a reclusive author to help him understand the meaning of the messages and the purpose for his field. —Scott Renshaw <as.idc@forsythe.stanford.edu> "If you build it, he will come," is what thirty-six-year-old novice farmer Ray Kinsella hears several times over the course of days from a bodiless voice emanating from somewhere in the cornfield on his Iowa farm. Later, he has a vision that the "it" is a baseball field, the "he" is Shoeless Joe Jackson, who was infamous for his association in the Chicago 8, the eight players of the 1919 White Series who were banned for life from the sport for throwing games in exchange for money from gamblers. Although it was proved that Jackson did take money, it was never proved that he participated in throwing any of the games. Ray grew up with baseball, his long-deceased father, John, who played in the minor leagues, lived in Chicago during that infamous year, and told stories to Ray about it and Jackson when he was growing up. He was estranged from his father at the time of his death, something that he now regrets. With the moral support of his wife, Annie, he tears up part of their cornfield to build that baseball field. He eventually hears the voice telling him other things, always without a clear understanding on his part of what it all means. One he believes it has to do with is famed '60's writer Terence Mann, now a recluse who stopped writing because he, renowned as the voice of his generation, didn't always want to be the answer to his generation's problems. Another he believes has to do with it is Archie "Moonlight" Graham, who played only one half of one inning of one major league game in 1922 and died in 1972. Ray's voice led path may be difficult to achieve since cynical Mann may not have the same direction of the voice as him and Graham is dead. He will have to work through these puzzles to understand the full meaning of what the voice wants for him, which may not happen if he and Annie lose the farm and thus the baseball field, a real possibility due to the latter taking away from earning income from the farm, especially as Annie's cutthroat brother, Mark, who says he is looking out for her best interest, will do whatever needed to get Ray back to what he considers reality of earning a living from the farm. —Huggo
