John Hay Forrest (George Gaynes), noted scientist and cheese-maker, dies in a single-vehicle car accident. Private investigator Rigby Reardon (Steve Martin) is approached by Forrest's daughter, Juliet (Rachel Ward). She hires Rigby to investigate the death, which she thinks was murder. In Dr. Forrest's lab, Rigby finds two lists, one titled "Friends of Carlotta" and the other "Enemies of Carlotta", as well as an affectionately autographed photo of singer Kitty Collins, whose name appears on one of the lists. His search is interrupted by a man posing as an exterminator (Alan Ladd, in This Gun for Hire), who shoots Rigby in the arm and frisks the lists from the supposedly dead investigator. Rigby manages to find his way to Juliet's house, where she sucks out the bullet, snakebite-style, and points Rigby to the club at which Kitty sings. Juliet also reveals a note to her father from her alcoholic brother-in-law, Sam Hastings, which in turn reveals that Dr. Forrest gave him a dollar bill "for safekeeping". Despite warnings that the mentally disturbed Leona will not be of much use, Rigby calls Leona, who after a rambling discussion, hangs up (Barbara Stanwyck, in Sorry, Wrong Number). On the way out, Juliet asks Rigby to leave further news with her butler or cleaning woman. Mention of the latter causes Rigby to go berserk (a homage to the old Slowly I Turned vaudeville routine), due to his own father running off with the cleaning woman and his mother dying of a broken heart. Rigby tracks down alcoholic Sam (Ray Milland, from Lost Weekend) and gets Dr. Forrest's dollar, which has "FOC" (Friends of Carlotta) names scrawled on it - including Kitty Collins and Swede Anderson (Kitty's boyfriend). Rigby tracks down Kitty Collins (Ava Gardner, from The Killers) at the Brentwood Room. He asks if she's one of Carlotta's friends, which causes her to leave abruptly. He trails her to a restaurant, where she ditches her brooch into her soup. Rigby subsequently retrieves the brooch, which contains an "EOC" list, on which all names are crossed out, except Swede Anderson's. Rigby visits Swede (Burt Lancaster, from The Killers) but while Rigby prepares a "java", Swede is killed. Rigby calls Marlowe (Humphrey Bogart, from The Big Sleep), his mentor, for assistance. Juliet hands over a key from Dr. Forrest's desk, a key to a train station locker. The accompanying note, "most recent rat", tells Rigby to look for locker 1936, the last Chinese Year of the Rat. Upon exiting, she asks Rigby to call with any progress. Marlowe arrives, and picks up the EOC list to check against unsolved murders. Rigby goes to the train station to collect the contents of locker 1936, which contains more lists. A "handsome" guy (Cary Grant, from Suspicion) follows him onto a train but, Rigby puts him to sleep with the help of his harmonica. Rigby finds F.X. Huberman, whose name he found on one of the lists and who turns out to be a "classy dame", throwing a party (Ingrid Bergman, from Notorious). She flirts with Rigby (represented by Cary Grant's silhouette), then drugs his drink and steals the locker key (represented by Claude Rains' wine cellar key). Rigby wakes up back up at his office, where Juliet informs him that Sam Hastings fell out of a window to his death. She also has a New York Times reference for him from her father's office. The reference is to an article about a South American cruise ship called Immer Essen (German: Always eating) on whose last voyage Sam Hastings was a passenger. When Marlowe (Bogart, from The Big Sleep) calls, Rigby questions him about Walter Neff, the ship's owner, and learns that Neff cruises supermarkets looking for blondes. Juliet offers to dye her hair to serve as bait, but Rigby is protective of her as more than a client. He first tries to recruit Monica Stillpond (Veronica Lake, from The Glass Key), but she's not as willing. Next, he tries Doris Devermont (Bette Davis, from Deception), but he ruins his chances with her by strangling her for saying "cleaning woman". Then he successfully recruits Jimmie Sue Altfeld (Lana Turner, from Johnny Eager) and unsuccessfully attempts to make peace with her father (Edward Arnold, from Johnny Eager) by giving him a puppy. He then is beaten up by four thugs (Kirk Douglas and others, from I Walk Alone). After this, Rigby disguises himself as a blonde and meets Neff (Fred MacMurray from Double Indemnity). Rigby drugs him and finds documents about the Immer Essen, including a passenger list identical to an EOC list, and articles about the ship's imprisoned captain, Cody Jarrett, who refuses to talk to anyone about it but his mother. Rigby then dresses up as Jarrett's mother to visit Jarrett in prison without arousing the prison guards' suspicion (James Cagney from White Heat). He tries to win Jarrett's confidence by explaining the Friends of Carlotta are after him. Rigby doesn't learn anything from Jarrett though, so he cashes in a favor with the warden to act as a prisoner for a few days. Jarrett turns out to be a Friend of Carlotta after all, kidnaps Rigby on a jail break, and shoots him while he's still in the trunk of the getaway car. After sucking out a third bullet, Juliet leaves for the drugstore for medicine. On her way out, a call comes in from an old flame (Joan Crawford, in Humoresque). Juliet overhears parts of it, takes it to be a double dating by Rigby and closes the case. While Rigby is drinking, thinking himself betrayed by Juliet, Marlowe calls and tips Rigby off that Carlotta is an island off Peru (the island in The Bribe and also perhaps a nod to The Man Who Knew Too Much). At a cafe, Rigby finds Kitty Collins (Ava Gardner, from The Bribe) there. Carlos Rodriguez, a local policeman from Rigby's gun-running past, warns Rigby of the locals, including Kitty's new boyfriend, Rice. The next day, one of the characters Rodriguez warned Rigby of (Charles Laughton, from The Bribe) approaches him and tries to bribe Rigby into leave the island. Next, Kitty drops by Reardon's room. Carlos calls to tell him Rice is in town with a group of Germans when the telephone line is cut. Kitty then drugs Rigby's drink, causing him to pass out. He wakes up to see Rice (Vincent Price, from The Bribe) trying to suffocate him. After exchanging shots and chasing through the "Fiesta De Carlotta" fireworks celebration (much of it archived footage from The Bribe), Rigby shoots Rice and frisks the corpse for instructions leading him to a hideout where he finds Juliet, her father (actually still alive), and her butler, who introduces himself as Field Marshal Wilfried Von Kluck (Carl Reiner). Rigby and the Field Marshal compete about the right to explain what happened. It turns out that Dr. Forrest had been tricked into divulging a secret cheese mold by Nazis posing as a humanitarian organization. Once he discovered their true intent, to use the mold's corrosive properties to destroy America, he assembled a list of Nazi agents, the "Friends of Carlotta". Before he could divulge the names to the FBI, he was abducted, and his death faked to prevent a police investigation. The Immer Essen, a cruise ship passing by, witnessed the corrosive effects of the mold tests, making all passengers "Enemies of Carlotta" and targets for murder. Rigby is captured but Juliet gets the Field Marshal to say, "cleaning woman", causing Rigby to go berserk, break his chains and overpower the Nazis. While Juliet gets Rodriguez, the Field Marshal manages to pull one of the switches, destroying Terre Haute, Indiana, before being shot dead by Rigby. Rodriguez rounds up the other Nazis while Rigby shares a long kiss with Juliet.

The banking industry in Switzerland is famous for maintaining secret numbered accounts, offering an ideal place to hide illicit funds of international criminals due to the privacy laws of the Swiss banks. Recently, however, Hurtil Bank, in Zurich, Switzerland, has received anonymous letters threatening to expose the names of depositors unless the bank pays ten million Swiss francs. Additionally, blackmail letters, asking for one million francs each, have been sent to five Hurtil account holders: Denise Abbott (Senta Burger), an attractive European socialite; Robert Hayes (John Saxon), a gangster from Chicago, Illinois; Dwight McGowan (John Ireland), a rich, corrupt businessman from Texas; Mr. Kosta (Curt Lowens) a businessman based in Amsterdam, Holland; and Mr. Rascha, an arms dealer, who was mysteriously murdered in a restaurant after receiving his letter. In an effort to avoid scandal and police involvement, bank president, Johann Hurtil (Ray Milland), hires American David Christopher (David Janssen) to investigate. Christopher, a former U.S. Justice Department official, runs an international consulting firm based in Geneva, Switzerland. During his initial meeting with Hurtil, Christopher is introduced to Denise, who mentions that the criminals must know she does not have a million francs, if they have access to her account. While at the bank, Christopher also encounters Hayes, who recently arrived in Zurich to confront Hurtil and vice-president Franz Benninger (Anton Diffring) about the blackmail. Upon learning Christopher has been entrusted with the case, Hayes is furious since Christopher was responsible for prosecuting him and his mafia associates in the U.S. Later, Christopher is en route to meet Denise at her hotel when Hayes tries to shoot him, but Christopher defends himself and exchanges blows with the gangster. Hayes flees, just before Captain Heinz Frey of the Swiss police arrives on the scene. As manager of Zurich's Federal Bank Detail, Frey is curious about Christopher's business with Hurtil, but the consultant remains guarded about the investigation. During his appointment with Denise that evening, Christopher learns that she had a love affair with Lord James Ashwood, a prominent British politician. If her Swiss account is compromised, Denise fears the romance will be exposed, causing a scandal for Ashwood and his family. Meanwhile, Robert Hayes is murdered by two assassins, and Frey and Christopher discover the body later that night. The following day Christopher's assistant, Connie, provides background profiles on the five account holders and reports that Hurtil and Benninger appear to be clear of any wrongdoing. Next, Christopher interviews McGowan, who states that he was careful not to share his Swiss account with anyone and cannot afford another setback since the U.S. Internal Revenue Service is investigating him for tax evasion. Back at the bank, Hurtil reads Christopher the final instructions from the blackmailers. Christopher and the three remaining blackmailed clients must deliver uncut diamonds worth 14 million francs to a location in Interlaken, Switzerland. Since the situation is more dangerous in the wake of two murders, Hurtil agrees to pay the entire ten million demanded from the bank, and the one million demanded from each of the five account holders. During the meeting, Kosta is present, and Christopher asks the Dutchman why a blackmailer would be interested in him, but Kosta does not have an answer. Later, Christopher succumbs to Denise's charm and spends the night with her. As the investigation continues, he suspects Franz Benninger and his girl friend, Rita Jensen, might be the blackmailers, after Christopher notices the vice-president furtively handing a portfolio to Jensen outside the bank. However, Christopher and Hurtil soon learn Benninger is innocent and can only be blamed for surreptitiously helping Rita access her deceased father's account for which she did not have documentation. With Benninger absolved, Christopher pursues another lead and informs Hurtil that he is flying out of town, but will return tomorrow, in time to comply with the blackmailer's instructions. At the airport, Christopher discloses details about the investigation to Frey, and the policeman grants him 24 hours to settle the case before he alerts Swiss authorities. Arriving back in Zurich the following day, Christopher is given a bag of uncut diamonds from Hurtil, then travels to Interlaken, accompanied by Kosta, Denise, and McGowan. There, the group receives further instructions from the blackmailer to board a steam train, but McGowan says he feels unwell and must return to his hotel. After the train ride up the mountain, Christopher, Kosta, and Denise are told by the conductor to proceed to the ski lift platform where an anonymous telephone caller orders Christopher to take the diamonds to the peak while Kosta and Denise remain below, in plain sight. However, Kosta offers to deliver the ransom instead, stating that he is more valuable to the blackmailers and, therefore, less likely to be killed. Christopher consents, and Kosta departs with the diamonds. Suddenly, Christopher changes his mind and follows Kosta, while pulling Denise onto the chair lift with him. Meanwhile, Frey and his men are en route to Interlaken to provide support for Christopher. During the ride on the ski lift, Christopher confronts Denise, revealing that he flew to London, England, yesterday to interview Lord Ashwood, who disclosed that she has been blackmailing him ever since the politician ended their affair. Christopher declares that Denise's talent as a mistress of wealthy men is the link between Kosta, McGowan, Rascha, and Hayes, and, together, the five of them organized the blackmail. He also blames her for the deaths of Hayes and Rascha. Elsewhere, McGowan does not return to Zurich and instead takes a helicopter to the top of the ski lift where he waits for the arrival of the diamonds. As soon as Kosta reaches the top, McGowan betrays his accomplice, shooting the Dutchman dead. McGowan tries to escape with the diamonds in the helicopter, but Christopher disables the tail rotor with a gunshot, then kills McGowan. After Christopher retrieves the diamonds from the snow, Denise attempts to charm him and acquire the precious stones, but he is no longer deceived by her cunning. When Denise aims a gun at him, Christopher outwits her, just as Frey arrives to apprehend the socialite.

This heartfelt tale of the love of a lifetime follows wealthy law student Oliver and working class music student Jenny who fall in love but must overcome more than just social barriers.

Ray Milland plays Dr. James Xavier a brilliant scientist who understands that the human eye only perceives a tenth of the entire visual spectrum. Through his experiments he develops an eye drop that allows a monkey to see through hard material and his gal-pal Dr. Diane Fairfax (Diana Van der Vlis) is astounded at the discovery. Xavier turns to his friend Dr. Sam Brant (Harold J. Stone) to aid him in administering the drug on himself to record the details first hand, but Brant doesnt want to because too much is still unknown about the drug. Xavier goes forward with his plans and discovers a wealth of new visual abilities he didnt posses before. His ability to see through material prevents a miss-diagnosed surgery but puts him at odds with the attending physician at his hospital. Brant tries to prevent Xavier from continuing the drug because of the physical damage to his system. In the midst of an argument Xavier accidentally causes the death of Brant and Diane convinces Xavier to flee until he can pull himself together and explain what happened. Xavier drops out of sight until Diane tracks him down and discovers that by continually using the vision drug Xavier has developed a sensitivity that has caused shocking changes in the doctors persona. As the police close in and crosses paths with a religious preacher the doctor takes some actions that have drastic aftereffects.

Based on Edgar Allan Poe's story about a cataleptic Englishman obsessed with the fear of being buried alive. Emily Gault arrives at the Carrell mansion determined to rekindle an old relationship with Guy Carrell, despite the disapproval of his sister, Kate. Guy overcomes his all-consuming fear of being buried alive long enough to marry Emily but soon becomes obsessed again, building a crypt designed to guarantee that he will not fall prey to his most dreaded nightmare. Trying to prove that he has been cured of his phobia, he opens his father's tomb and is shocked into a catatonic state. His worst fears are realized as he is lowered into a grave and covered over, apparently never to learn that the treachery of someone very dear to him was directly responsible for his predicament. —Doug Sederberg <vornoff@sonic.net> The wealthy cataleptic painter Guy Carrell believes that he overheard his father, who also had catalepsy, crying in the crypt of his family when he was a kid and is obsessed by the fear of being buried alive. He leaves his fiancée Emily Gault and lives alone with his sister Kate Carrell in the family manor. However Emily seeks him out and convinces Guy to marry her, despite the disapproval of Kate, promising that she would never bury him without the certainty of his death by her friend, Dr. Miles Archer, and her father Dr. Gideon Gault. After the wedding, Guy does not travel in honeymoon to Venice, as he had promised to Emily, and builds a crypt with safety devices to avoid that he is trapped alive inside. However Emily and Miles convince him to demolish the building. Guy has nightmares and visions with the gravediggers and weird events happen in the mansion. He decides to prove that is cured of his fear and opens his father grave, but someone has moved his skeleton and Guy is diagnosed of heart attack. A gunfighter's main hope lies in the trust of a beautiful woman who hides him out when he is wrongly suspected of a stagecoach massacre. A gunfighter, stranded in the desert, comes across the aftermath of a stage robbery, in which all the passengers were killed. He takes one of the horses to ride to town to report the massacre, but finds himself accused of it. In this 1953 remake of the the 1937 film "The Awful Truth," Jane Wyman and Ray Milland play Constance and Gary Hart, a New York show-biz couple. She's a singer and dancer and he's a songwriter. But he's also a philanderer and she turns the tables on him by pretending to spend the night with their friend Courtney (Tom Helmore), an older (and sexually ambiguous) male friend. Constance is furious at Gary. She wants a husband who's "there" for her. But no sooner does she throw Gary out, than he becomes constantly underfoot, hanging around their apartment songwriting on his old piano that's too big to remove without taking out the window. Maybe she doesn't want a man who's really "there" after all? After all, she does sing a song called "Taking a Slow Burn Over A Fast Man" about being in love with a heel. Constance files for divorce and they both fall into dissatisfying single lifestyles. Constance finds herself living a spinsterish life with her maid Nelly, who lovingly tucks a hot water bottle in a needlepoint pillow and pops it in her bed each night before she goes home. Gary's also leading a superficial bachelor life at the Sherry-Netherland with his valet. Both enter into imperfect relationships: Gary is dating an elegant socialite, Deborah Randolph (Karin Booth). Constance still spends time with the dapper Courtney, but we know he's not really interested in her sexually. A younger man, Frank (Aldo Ray), a uranium millionaire from Alaska, and a longtime admirer of Constance's, arranges to meet her at a backer's audition for Courtney's new show, and immediately goes after her. But is he really the dull guy Constance thinks she's looking for? He likes a night on the town and does a mean "Cuban Mambo" on the dance floor. Also in the picture is Lilly Adair (played by famed dancer Valerie Bettis), a rather outrageously sexual singer-dancer at an upper-crust nightclub, where Gary runs into Constance and Frank, "by chance." There, Lilly performs a song "I Long for Love the Jungle Way," suggesting that it's a lack of physicality that's at the bottom of Gary and Constance's marital problems. Although wooing Constance, Frank's fascination with Lilly is evident. Gary, having discovered that Constance had only pretended to spend the night with Courtney to get back at him, wakes her up with a song he wrote called "Let's Do It Again." He wants her back. But in the meantime, Courtney proposes to Constance in her bedroom (even though he swore he would never get married), so that she'll stay in her "own world." Gary, ready to reconcile, comes back to the apartment. Constance tries to hide Courtney, but he's discovered when Gary accidentally puts on Courtney's larger hat by accident. Could this mean that despite his asexuality towards women, Courtney is more of a man than Gary? They get into a fist fight in Constance's bedroom and Frank comes to visit, ready to take Constance home to meet his parents in Seattle. Their relationship ends, but Constance was never really committed to Frank anyhow. Gary, who for a city slicker is amazingly naive about Courtney's sexual disinterest in Constance, goes back to Deborah with a vengeance. Constance puts on a sexy, wedding style outfit on the day their divorce decree becomes final. Gary wants her signature for permission to take the window out of the apartment so he can move his piano. She wants to get back together with him. She opens a huge bottle of champagne in the kitchen, closes the blinds and turns out the lights. But Deborah calls just as Constance pops the cork and Gary pretends he's with his sister. Gary gives Constance a rude brush-off. But Constance fights back; pretending to be Gary's sister, she calls Deborah and has her arrange a party at Gary's hotel suite. Not only that, Deborah's parents are in town to meet Gary. The only parents mentioned in this film are Frank and Deborah's; it suggests that that even though they're in touch with their sexuality in a way that Gary and Constance aren't, neither of them are truly adults. Constance brazenly enters the party pretending to be Gary's sister. Like Irene Dunne in "The Awful Truth," she's wonderfully trashy. She does a mean imitation of Lilly, and we hear "I Long For Love The Jungle Way" a second time, this time sung by Constance. Deborah's parents and the rest of the guests leave in disgust. Deborah throws in the towel, saying to Gary that Constance must really still love him. Frank and Lilly end up getting together--after all, they're emotional equals. Gary wants Constance to stay at the hotel with him, but she runs back to her apartment in tears. Nelly's waiting with the hot water bottle. And Constance is not so distraught that she can't put on one last beautiful outfit, a white negligee that evokes a wedding night. Nelly leaves and Gary bangs on the bedroom door. Constance's weeping and clutching the hot water bottle that symbolizes her solitary female life. She has a chance at the husband she thought she always wanted, one who will be always there. She lets Gary in and they passionately embrace. The film ends with needlepointed hot water bottle discarded on the floor. It's tossed aside for now, but it's still in the couple's bedroom. This suggests that their marital problems are not quite over. Constance is going to have to give up more than Frank to make this marriage work. "Let's Do It Again," maybe because it's a remake, is thematically more of a thirties or early forties film than a fifties one. Constance wants a steady husband, but she's not interested in being a housewife. She has no interest in giving up her career or having children. Ray Milland is serviceable in this film as Gary, but he's no Cary Grant. This makes Constance's choices more problematic than Lucy's in The Awful Truth. But he probably helps foot the bill for her drop-dead wardrobe. Constance appears in one beautiful outfit after another throughout the film; that New York apartment must have a lot of closet space. Jane Wyman is Irene Dunne's equal in this remake. As the years go on, Wyman has become overly identified with the dull, virtuous women she played in Douglas Sirk's films. It's nice to see her let loose here and it reminds us that she was also a great comic actress.

In Jamaica, amid murder and deceit, a schooner skipper and a land developer search for the sunken ship containing proof regarding the identity of the true heirs of a legendary Jamaican estate. Promoter William Montague wants to buy the estate owned by the Daceys, Mrs. Dacey and her daughter Ena and son Todd, in order to build a resort hotel. When they turn him down, he produces a couple of distant relatives, Janice and Robert Clayton, and sets about to prove that the estate rightfully belongs to them. The identity of the rightful heirs is thought to be buried in a sunken ship off of the Jamaican shore and the search begins, led by a schooner skipper, Patrick Fairlie, who is in love with Ena. —Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net>

Rich, eccentric T.J. Banner adopts a feral cat who becomes an affectionate pet. Then T.J. dies, leaving to Rhubarb most of his money and a pro baseball team, the Brooklyn Loons. When the team protests, publicist Eric Yeager convinces them that Rhubarb is good luck. A group of copper miners, Southern veterans, are terrorized by local rebel-haters, led by deputy Lane Travis. The miners ask stage sharpshooter Johnny Carter to help them, under the impression that he is the legendary Colonel Desmond. The three Craig sisters, in Switzerland with their ten-years-divorced mother, run away to New York to prevent their father from marrying calculating socialite Donna Lyons. The overpowering vivacity of the Smart Girls (nominal ages 14-20) sweeps all before it, but a romantic complication between middle sister Kay and their accidental ally, Lord Michael Stuart, threatens shipwreck to their schemes... —Rod Crawford <puffinus@u.washington.edu> Teenage sisters Joan, Kay and Penny Craig have lived with their mother Dorothy Craig in Switzerland ever since their parents divorced ten years ago, their wealthy New York banker father, Judson Craig, who they have not seen since. As they know their mother still loves their father and has always dreamed of a reconciliation, the sisters, with help from their faithful housekeeper Martha and without telling their mother beforehand, decide to travel to New York upon media reports that their father is thinking about remarrying, to a younger woman named Donna Lyons. Upon arriving in New York, their father barely remembers or recognizes them which does not deter their mission of breaking up their father and Donna, especially when their fears are confirmed: that Donna is nothing but a gold-digger. Judson has to do a balancing act between keeping Donna happy against getting reacquainted with his daughters who he really does love. While the sisters find they have extra reinforcements in their father's investment manager Bill Evans and their father's faithful longtime butler Binns who too believe Donna only has dollar signs in her eyes, Donna and her mother can see what the girls are up to, setting the battle grounds.
