Mistaken for train robbers, Matt Dow and Davey Bishop are shot at by the sheriff and his posse but they are cleared and hired as lawmen. Odd little Western that gets off to a snappy start when a man (Matt Dow) is mistaken as a train robber. After the town's sheriff shoots the kid he's riding with, Dow clears his name and ends up as the new sheriff. He romances a Swedish woman and settles in to a peaceful life only to find that the boy has a few secrets of his own.

Post-civil-war Texas sells lands to wealthy Northerners but some of them are crooks bent on cheating the locals, prompting an investigation headed by the governor's envoy. Following the Civil War, the state of Texas, needing money, sells land to a syndicate of northerners headed by Judd Hastings (Ray Teal). When Hastings demands the land, and the squatters refuses to vacate, the governor sends Mike McGann (Dennis Morgan) to settle the issues. Eventually, McGann gets the ranchers to move on to other areas with their cattle, which Hastings also covets. A young girl from a provincial town learns the bitter reality of a big city and great love. It's the turn of the century. From small town Missouri, Carrie Meeber has just moved to Chicago expecting to take the city by storm, or at least to do better than her sister Minnie has done before her in Carrie being better educated. She finds that she isn't as wise to the ways of the city largely in having a provincial mentality. She ends up needing the help of others to survive, if not Minnie and her husband Sven, then others showing her any kindness. In having a falling out with her sister and brother-in-law, Carrie somewhat reluctantly accepts the assistance and friendship of traveling salesman Charlie Drouet, who expects to capitalize on Carrie's naivete to get what he wants from her. It isn't until she has committed to Drouet in her need to be respectable that she falls mutually in love with George Hurstwood, the manager of Fitzgerald's, one of the most upscale restaurant/bars in the city. What George does not tell her is that he is already married with grown children, albeit the marriage a cold one to Julia Hurstwood in her only concern being her/their standing in society. This situation is a potential disaster zone for all concerned.

A Confederate Major and his troops are falsely led to believe the Civil War is not over, and become wanted men after they attack a Union Army wagon train in Nevada. In 1865, a troop of Confederate soldiers led by Major Matt Stewart attacks the wagon of gold escorted by Union cavalry and the soldiers are killed. The only wounded survivor says that the war ended one month ago, and the group decides to take the gold and meet their liaison that knew that the war ended but did not inform the troop. The harsh Rolph Bainter kills the greedy man and the soldiers flee in his wagon driven by Major Stewart. When they meet a posse chasing them, Stewart gives wrong information to misguide the group, but they have an accident with the wagon and lose the horses. They decide to stop a stagecoach and force the driver to transport them, but the posse returns and they are trapped in the station with the passenger. They realize that the men are not deputies and have no intention to bring them to justice but take the stolen gold.

Nightclub comic Hap Smith assumes the identity of another soldier so he can tour army bases in a revue with his ex-partner Chuck Allen. Hap Smith, nightclub entertainer, has a new act since his former partner Chick Allen joined the army: with lovely new partner Betsy Carter, Hap plays a clownish parody of a soldier. Meanwhile, Chick is organizing a soldier show at Fort Benning and finds he needs his old partner's help. To get onto the base, Hap impersonates a hapless real soldier, Dogface Dolan; but circumstances force them to prolong the masquerade, creating an increasingly tangled Army-sized snafu.

His only alibi is Candace Bronson, who is aiding the Confederate cause and has left the territory to deliver a vital message about a Yankee gold shipment. in 1840 during the Second Seminole Florida War, an American Army and military leader General named Zachary Tailor sends an army of American Western cowboys and soldiers lead by the heroic Captain Quincy Wyatt (who lives with a 5-year-old Indian boy) along with his two sidekicks, Navy Lieutenant Tufts and Scout Monk on a mission to destroy a Spanish Seminole Fortress deep in the jungles of Florida where an evil Indian army of Seminole warriors of the evil dark side led by the dark evil Chief Billy "Ocala" Powell are keeping people prisoner. they have an epic battle at the fortress, eventually leading to blowing up the fortress and rescuing the prisoners in the fort's dungeons. Judith "Judy" Beckett, one of the prisoners takes a romantic interest in Captain Wyatt. after the fortress explodes though the Indians escape, they flee into the deep dangerous dark and jungles and man-eating Alligator-infested swamp terrors of the Everglades in order to reach their safety while under chase by the Seminoles and Chief Oscala. after killing a deadly dangerous venomous snake, being forced into eating fish and turtles and one of the soldiers getting eaten by hungry man-eating Alligators, they eventually make it to Wyatt's home only to find that the place is burned down to the ground in smithereens and Wyatt thinks that the 5-year-old Indian boy he lives with is gone. the Indians chase them there and both armies are on opposite sides of a lake. Wyatt challenges their evil Seminole Chief Oscala to an underwater battle in the lake. Wyatt wins, killing and stabbing Ocala and the Indians all flee in terror, he gives his weapon to Lieutenant Tufts who says he will tell his family the entire story behind it. and then Captain Wyatt realises that the child is luckily still alive and finds him. Wyatt falls in love with Judy and the film ends.

Chuck Tatum (Kirk Douglas) is a driven and talented news reporter whose short temper and contempt for authority has gotten him fired from many of Americas best newspapers. Tatum finds himself broken down in Albuquerque and appeals to the local news paper editor Jacob Q. Boot (Porter Hall) for a job until he can scrape up enough money to get back to New York, or Chicago or some other big newspaper. Boot hires him but after a year Tatum roams around the newspaper office ranting over the lack of any news in the town. Boot sends him and photographer Herbie Cook (Robert Arthur) to Los Brios to cover the annual rattlesnake roundup, but on the way, Tatum happens upon a real human interest story. Local merchant Leo Minosa (Richard Benedict) is caught in a cave in an old tunnel inside an ancient Indian burial location. The local Indians and Leo himself say Indian spirits may have caused the cave in because Leo has been raiding the mine for old religious relics. Tatum writes up the story with great hooks angling in the superstitious Indian lore, and focusing on Leo's wife Lorraine (Jan Sterling) as a faithful wife even though she wants to leave Leo. Tatum's story gets picked up by the news services, and to insure that he keeps the rights, Tatum makes a deal with the local crooked sheriff Kretzer (Ray Teal) for help in isolating the location where Leo is. When Tatum learns that the rescuers can get Leo out in about 12 hours by shoring up the inside of the mine, he convinces the rescue crew to drill in from above instead, a job that will take 6 days and will give Tatum enough time to whip the story into a real career-changing event. As Lorraine agrees to allow people to come into to see the event for a price, she sees the profits at the diner increase greatly and a big-time newspaper editor from New York agrees to pay Tatum a huge amount for the story and give him his old job back. Leo begins to become ill as time passes and his health decides the futures of those making a profit from his demise.
