A cat narrates the story of the Willoughby siblings: Tim, Jane and twins both named Barnaby. The Willoughby family legacy has an accomplished history, but the children's parents only care about each other. They despise all children and deprive the siblings of love, food and music. Tim longs for his family's past glory. Jane discovers a baby on the family's doorstep. She brings the baby inside despite Tim's warnings, and the baby wreaks havoc. The Willoughby parents throw their children out of the house, forbidding them to return unless they get rid of the baby. The children follow a rainbow to the doorstep of Commander Melanoff's candy factory, and believing it to be a suitable home, name the baby "Ruth" and leave her there. On their way home, the siblings hatch a plan to improve their lives by getting rid of their parents. The siblings put together a vacation brochure full of deadly destinations that could potentially kill their parents and make them orphans. Their parents are excited by the brochure and leave immediately. Tim tries to take care of his siblings alone, but flounders until the nanny hired by their parents arrives. The nanny, Linda, proves to be much warmer and more caring than their parents, and Jane and the Barnabys warm up to her almost immediately; Tim, however, remains distrustful. When Linda learns about Ruth, she rushes to the candy factory with the children in tow. Melanoff explains that he originally intended to hand the baby over to the Department of Orphan Services, but grew attached to her; Linda is assured that Ruth will be well cared for in the factory. Meanwhile, the Willoughby parents have somehow survived several hazardous destinations, but soon discover they're out of money. Unwilling to return home, they decide to sell their house in order to further finance their vacation. They tell Linda by voice message, and Linda assures them she will take care of the children. Tim gets Linda's cell phone and finds the voice messages. He mistakenly assumes Linda means to dispose of the children, and secretly calls Orphan Services to report her. The Willoughby parents hire a Realtor to sell the house to potential buyers, but the children scare off all but one family. Linda scares the last family off for them. Tim finally realizes how much Linda cares. However, Orphan Services arrive in response to Tim's call. Heartbroken by Tim's betrayal, Linda leaves in tears, and the Willoughby siblings are forcibly taken away and placed in separate foster homes until their parents return. Tim repeatedly runs away from his well-meaning foster families and runs to the Willoughby home just in time to watch its demolition. Orphan Services decides to detain him in a cell at their Headquarters. The narrator cat finally intervenes by giving Tim's helmet to Linda. She decides to reunite the children. Disguised as a janitor, Linda sneaks into Tim's cell, reconciles with him, and breaks him out with the helpers in pursuit. Linda then retrieves and reunites the other Willoughby children. The children decide to go back to their parents so that Orphan Services will leave them alone. With the help of Linda, Ruth, and Melanoff, the Willoughbys build a dirigible to rescue them from the "Unclimbable Alps" in Switzerland (shown and pronounced as Sveetzerlünd), which is the final and deadliest destination on their parents' trip. The siblings decide to take the dirigible and leave the adults and Ruth behind. As they reach their destination, they follow a trail of their mother's yarn to the top of the mountain, where they find their parents nearly frozen to death. The siblings and the cat save them. The children confess that they sent them away but hope to reunite as a family. However, their parents are selfish as always, stealing the dirigible and abandoning the children. However, not knowing how to steer the dirigible, Mr. and Mrs. Willoughby crash into the ocean. With no way off the mountain, the siblings start to freeze to death, with no way down back, Jane sings for them. Thankfully, Ruth, Melanoff, and Linda followed the dirigible and heard Jane's song, finding the siblings just in time. Now officially orphans, the Willoughbys are adopted by Linda and Melanoff, living much happier lives together with Ruth and the Cat at Melanoff's candy factory. Meanwhile, Mr. and Mrs. Willoughby are shown to have survived the dirigible crash and are stranded at sea, whereupon they are eaten by a shark.

A camera crew catches up with David Brent, the former star of the fictional British series, "The Office" as he now fancies himself a rockstar on the road.

News radio journalist Frank Bonneville (Eric Bana) enters a murder scene posing as a cop using a fake badge that he picked up from a cop shaped teddy bear. Getting the details of the crime, he is removed from the premises by the Superintendent of Police, who identified Frank. Frank goes to his van, managed by his technical guy Ian, and immediately reports the story live on the radio. Frank has a flair for blowing the story up and making it into a national sensation. Frank converts the brawl at the hotel into Russian Gang wars story on radio, which is great for business. Upon returning to the station, he is applauded by colleagues on getting the story first, but his boss Geoffrey Mallard (Kevin Pollak) warns that if he breaks the law one more time, he'll be fired. Mallard says that Frank is tolerated as everyone thinks he is a local celebrity, but in reality, he is an arrogant and selfish hack. That night, every-man Ian Finch (Ricky Gervais), also Frank's sound technician, takes his wife Eleanor (Vera Farmiga) to the station's annual ball. Ian is a simple person, and he is the first one to arrive for the ball, even when the staff had not prepared the ball room for the event. Eleanor, on the other hand, is a diva, and cares for her status. Eleanor is not proud that even at 50, Ian is just a sound engineer at a local radio station. She is exasperated that Ian never wanted to do anything extraordinary in his life. Ian must leave for a stake-out with co-worker Claire Maddox (Kelly Macdonald). Eleanor is not proud of Ian's career and wishes for a more exciting life. She believes Ian is lame for pretending to know many famous celebrities, but he barely even knows the people who know them. Eleanor then meets Frank and is attracted to him. Eleanor meets Frank at the bar and starts chatting him up. Eleanor lets Frank assume that she is in PR. Frank shares with Eleanor that he hates radio and knows that he is destined for bigger things, and that he is a big fish in a little pond. Frank sleeps with her, unaware she is Finch's wife. But at her apartment Frank Is able to guess that Eleanor is married as her apartment had superhero toys. The next day, Mallard puts Frank (and Finch) on a story about an uprising in Ecuador. Frank wants a technician to go with him as he had transmission issues in his last assignment in Pakistan. Mallard selects Finch. At first, Finch declines because he needs to try to save his marriage (he says his wife left him that very morning), but he later changes his mind. At the airport, they realize Finch has accidentally thrown their passports and plane tickets in a garbage truck. Finch had written a long letter to his wife to win her back, but Frank advises him to throw the letter away and ignore his wife for a few weeks. They return to the city and hide out at a cafe owned by Spanish couple Brigida (America Ferrera) and Domingo (Raúl Castillo), located across from the radio station. With their help, Frank and Finch fake the war reports in their spare room. Frank uses his cell phone to call in the report and Finch uses his equipment to make it sound like a war zone. After Finch and Frank decide the story needs to be bigger, they invent a man named Emilio Santiago Alvarez, who is elusive and closely linked to the war. The report alerts Washington, who now fear that Frank and Finch are targets for Alvarez's men. Meanwhile, Frank and Finch watch as other media outlets report on Alvarez, including their TV rival John Baker (Benjamin Bratt). Mallard calls Frank, telling them to go to the U.S. embassy in Quito, to be flown home. Panicking that they'll be found out, Frank and Finch destroy their SIM cards to not be traced. The next morning, Frank fails to check in with Mallard, worrying the station. The media begins reporting on their 'disappearance'. Claire visits Eleanor to offer sympathy, but she seems more interested in getting her story out. Frank and Finch stage a hostage situation, and send a video message to the President, demanding a ransom (Brigida and Domingo act as their kidnappers) or they will be killed. Later, Frank and Finch watch as Eleanor appears on TV, so Frank finally realizes she's Finch's wife. She then performs a song, "Dollar for a Hero", calling for their safe return. Eleanor subsequently becomes a national sensation, setting up a charity for Finch and Frank. She has already collected $124K. Mallard asks Claire to get to know her, who is using her husband's plight to start a singing career. Finch accepts Eleanor's selfishness, saying he's no longer upset she left him. On his birthday, he admits he can't keep up the charade any longer. Finch and Frank stop off at his apartment to take some of the donated money but are caught by Eleanor. The three decide to split the cash so everyone can get what they want. The men drive, then sail illegally to Ecuador. They hitch a ride to Quito from a local, stopping first at a rundown bar. There, they are kidnapped and taken to a small village, where they are locked up. Thinking they're going to die. Frank admits he slept with Eleanor. The next morning, the captors demand ransom from Eleanor ($100K for each) but she refuses, telling them to kill Frank and Finch. When a captor returns, planning for them to fight to the death, Frank steals his gun and Finch shoots him. They escape stealing a car, make it to the U.S. embassy, and are flown home by private jet. On their return, they are greeted by the Secretary of State, press, friends, and family. Frank makes a speech, and Finch bypasses Eleanor to greet Domingo and Brigida. Eleanor then speaks to the press about her upcoming album, as Finch takes off his wedding ring. He approaches Claire, who he realizes likes him for who he is. The pair happily walk off towards the city together.
