Robert De Niro

In the early 2000s, in a nursing home in his wheelchair, Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro) is an elderly World War II veteran. He reflects on his life leading up to where he is now, starting with his profession as a "house painter" - in other words, a hit-man. In the 1950's, Frank lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania working as a truck driver for a meat-packing company. He's married to Mary (Aleksa Palladino) and has a daughter, Peggy (Lucy Gallina). Sheeran starts to sell some of the contents of his shipments to a local Philadelphia Italian-American gangster known as "Skinny Razor", a member of the Philadelphia crime family headed by Angelo Bruno. After his company accuses him of theft, union lawyer Bill Bufalino (Ray Romano) gets him off, and helps Frank avoid legal repercussions by telling him to not give up the names of anybody that he was selling to. Bill introduces Sheeran to his cousin Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci), the head of the Northeastern Pennsylvania crime family. Frank discusses his time in the war, and how he was skilled at taking out enemy soldiers. Sheeran begins to carry out jobs for him, as well as members of the South Philadelphia underworld, including "painting houses", a euphemism for contract killing. Frank is asked by a gangster called Whispers (Paul Herman) to take out Russell and his buddy Angelo Bruno (Harvey Keitel). Frank doesn't go through with it and instead brings this information to Russell and Angelo. One afternoon, Frank goes home to see that Peggy is looking upset. Mary tells him that she knocked something over at the supermarket, and the store owner shoved her. Frank takes Peggy back to the store where he violently confronts the store owner, beating him and throwing him through the glass door before assaulting him in the street, in full view of Peggy and others walking by. This leads Peggy to become terrified of her father. During this time, Frank leaves Mary for a woman named Irene (Stephanie Kurtzuba), and they later have 3 other daughters. Frank's 1st daughter Peggy (Anna Paquin), 2nd daughter is Dolores (Marin Ireland), 3rd one is Maryanne (Jennifer Mudge) and 4th is Connie (Kate Arrington). At the time Russell's boss is Angelo Bruno (Harvey Keitel). One time Frank accepts a mark to burn down a laundry competitor in Philly, without knowing it was owned by Bruno. Russell saves Frank that time. Soon, Russell introduces Sheeran to Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino), the head of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (The most powerful man in the country after the President himself), who has financial ties with the Bufalino crime family and is struggling to deal with fellow rising Teamster President Anthony "Tony Pro" Provenzano (Stephen Graham), as well as mounting pressure from the federal government to reduce the influence of the Unions. Frank hits the ground running in Chicago, by destroying all cabs of the drivers who joined the opposing Union and helping strengthen Jimmy's position in the city. Jimmy's right-hand man is "Crazy" Joe Gallo (Sebastian Maniscalco). Russell's wife is Carrie (Kathrine Narducci). Jimmy's wife is Josephine "Jo" Hoffa (Welker White). Hoffa becomes close with Sheeran and his family, especially his daughter Peggy (Anna Paquin), and Sheeran becomes Hoffa's chief bodyguard while on the road. The Teamsters Union had 1 million members, and its pension account had $8 Bn in it, which Jimmy had complete control over. As kickback for investments from the pension funds, Jimmy regularly took shares in the companies and often in his wife's name. Jimmy had a client Momo Chancana (who was from the Italian Mob), who was friends with JFK's dad, back when he was a bootlegger in Chicago. So, this was the mob's connection with the Kennedys, and they helped him win in 1960. In exchange the US President was supposed to help the mob access the casinos and properties in Cuba, which never really worked out. Jimmy and his Teamsters are staunchly against the Kennedys. After the 1960 election of John F. Kennedy, Russell is thrilled while Hoffa is livid. In November 1963, after JFK is assassinated, Jimmy makes an insensitive comment to the press that Bobby Kennedy (Jack Huston), the former General Attorney, is now "just another lawyer." Kennedy's brother, Robert F. Kennedy (Jack Huston), who was named Attorney General, forms a "Get Hoffa" squad in an effort to bring down Hoffa as he wanted to "deal" with the growing power of the Unions & the Mob and in way betraying their trust as they helped put JFK in the white house. Meanwhile Russell asks Frank to deliver a shipment of weapons that JFK used for the Bay of Pigs invasion, made up army regulars and mobsters. The invasion fails and Robert goes after Hoffa with renewed rigor. Hoffa is eventually arrested and convicted in 1964 for jury tampering. While in prison, his replacement atop the Teamsters, Frank Fitzsimmons (Gary Basaraba), begins overspending the groups' pension funds and making interest-free loans out to the Mafia. Hoffa's relationship with Tony Pro, himself arrested for extortion, also deteriorates beyond repair when Hoffa refuses to help restore his forfeited pension. It just leads to them getting into a brawl, which is broken up by guards and other inmates. Hoffa is eventually released via a Presidential pardon from Richard Nixon in 1971. Jimmy contributed $0.5 million for Nixon's re-election and thus bought the pardon, although he is forbidden from taking part in any Teamsters activities until 1980. Despite his parole terms, Hoffa undertakes a plan to retake his power atop the organized unions. But Hoffa needs the votes from Tony Provenzano to get re-elected against Fitzsimmons, whom the Unions and the Mobs like. The meeting with Tony goes badly and Hoffa and Tony come to blows as neither would back down from their hatred of each other. Hoffa wants Sheeran to talk to Russell about killing Tony. Hoffa's growing disrespect for other Teamster leaders and related crime family interests begins to worry Russell. To get re-elected Hoffa goes about saying that Fitzsimmons gave 0 interest loans adding up-to a billion dollars to his mob friends and in the process sold his own union out. During a testimonial dinner in Sheeran's honor in October 1973, Russell tells Sheeran to confront Hoffa and warn him that the heads of the crime families are not pleased with his behavior. Hoffa then informs Sheeran that he "knows things" that Russell and the other dons are unaware that he knows, and further claims that he is untouchable because if anything ever happened to him, they would all end up in prison. In 1975, while on their way to the wedding of Bill's daughter, Russell tells Sheeran that things have reached their breaking point with Hoffa, and his death has been sanctioned. To his chagrin, Russell tells Sheeran that he has been chosen as the person to do it, on fears that he otherwise might try to warn or save him. The two drive to an airport, where Sheeran gets on a flight to Detroit. Sheeran tells Hoffa he will be in town early in the day but arrives late that afternoon. Hoffa, who had scheduled a meeting at a local diner with Provenzano and Anthony Giacalone, is surprised to see Sheeran arriving there in a car with Hoffa's unsuspecting foster son Chuckie O'Brien (Jesse Plemons) and Sal Briguglio (Louis Cancelmi), another gangster. They advise Hoffa that the meeting was moved to a house where Provenzano and Russell are waiting for them. Sheeran reassures Hoffa that everything is fine, and he joins them in the car. Upon entering the house, Hoffa finds that no one else is there and believes that he has been set up. He turns around to leave the house, at which point Sheeran shoots him twice at point-blank range before leaving the gun and the body at the entrance. After Sheeran leaves, two younger gangsters take Hoffa's body to a crematorium to eliminate all traces of him. Peggy figures out that Sheeran had something to do with Hoffa's death. Hoffa and Peggy were close, so Peggy stopped talking to Sheeran from that point on. Invoking their Fifth Amendment rights in a grand jury investigation into Hoffa's disappearance, Sheeran, Russell, Tony, and others are eventually convicted and incarcerated on various charges unrelated to Hoffa's murder and die one by one in prison. Sheeran is eventually released and placed in a nursing home. He tries to make peace with his alienated daughters, but Peggy severs all contact with him. Sheeran begins to see a Catholic priest assigned to the nursing home. The priest gives Sheeran absolution in his room. As the priest leaves Sheeran alone in his room for the Christmas holidays, Sheeran asks him to leave the door open a little, emulating Hoffa's habit.

The story begins with an underachieving blue streak cleaner wrasse named Oscar (Will Smith), who is fantasizing about being rich and famous while making his way to work by following in his father's footsteps as a tongue scrubber at the local Whale Wash. Soon after arriving he is called to the office of his boss, a puffer fish named Sykes (Martin Scorsese), to discuss the fact that he owes "five thousand clams" and has to pay it back by the next day. After explaining this to his best friend Angie who is an angelfish (Renée Zellweger), she offers him a chance to pay back the money by pawning a pink pearl that was a gift from her grandmother. Oscar brings the money to the racetrack to meet Sykes, but becomes distracted by his wishes of grandeur and, upon hearing that the race is rigged, places it all on a long shot bet by the name of "Lucky Day". Such a million-dollar bet is noticed nearby by a beautiful lion-fish named Lola (Angelina Jolie), who flagrantly seduces an excited Oscar, but Oscar is very disappointed when she leaves once Sykes tells her he is a whale washer. Sykes is furious that Oscar bet the money but nonetheless agrees to see how the race turns out. Moments before their "horse", "Lucky Day" crosses the finish line he trips and falls on the line. The race is lost, and Oscar is set to be punished in a secluded area for his impulsive behavior. Meanwhile, on another side of the ocean, in the wreck of the RMS Titanic, a family of criminally-inclined great white sharks has a problem with one of their sons, Lenny (Jack Black) (who is a Vegetarian). Lenny refuses to act the part of a killer and wishes to not have to live up to those expectations. Finally, his father, Don Lino (Robert De Niro) loses patience and orders Lenny's more savage older brother Frankie (Michael Imperioli) to show Lenny the ropes. As the two sharks set out to go in accordance with their father's wishes, Frankie spots the scene where Oscar is being electrocuted by Ernie and Bernie (Doug E. Doug and Ziggy Marley), Sykes' two Jamaican Physalia Physalis thugs, and sends Lenny off to attack. The jellyfish spot Lenny and swim off, leaving Oscar alone with him. Lenny frees Oscar but fails to trick Frankie, who becomes annoyed and charges at Oscar when an anchor falls and kills him. Lenny flees, overcome with grief and guilt. As no one saw the deed done and Oscar was seen near the body, everyone thinks he did it, and Oscar sees this as the chance to both redeem himself and receive his fame. Oscar comes back to the city with a new title of the Sharkslayer. Sykes becomes his manager, Lola becomes his girlfriend, and Oscar moves to the "top of the reef" to live in luxury. At the same time, Don Lino has everyone out looking for Lenny, and when several get close to Oscar's town the other fish expect him to drive them away. On the way he meets Lenny once more who forces Oscar to let him stay with him because he does not want to go home. Soon Angie finds out about the lie and threatens to tell everyone, but Oscar and Lenny convince her to keep quiet. Although Oscar desires to please everyone, he soon discovers that he pleases no one; his paramour Angie is heartbroken by the fact that Oscar is no longer honest, while her hedonistic rival Lola repeatedly reminds Oscar that he has her only as long as he is famous. With Don Lino planning revenge, Oscar and Lenny stage an event where Lenny pretends to terrorize the town and Oscar must defeat him, throwing him into the depths of the ocean. Though this further cements Oscar as the Sharkslayer, this greatly angers Don Lino. Oscar leaves Lola for Angie after Angie reveals that she had feelings for Oscar even before he became famous, but this leaves Lola determined to get revenge. Oscar buys some Valentine's Day gifts for Angie, but before he can present them to her, he finds that Don Lino has kidnapped Angie in order to force a sit-down. Lenny comes along, now disguised as a dolphin named Sebastian. They arrive at the meeting to find Lola next to Don Lino, while Angie is bound and gagged with duct tape and presented to Don Lino on a plate, who prepares to eat her once Oscar doesn't comply. Oscar just laughs and Lenny as "Sebastian" lunges forward to scoop Angie into his mouth, freeing her from Don Lino and giving Oscar dominance over the sharks. However, he spends too much time threatening the sharks and doesn't realize how much pain Lenny is in, and Angie is regurgitated onto the table. Don Lino suddenly realizes it's Lenny and proceeds to chase Oscar through the reef, but Oscar heads for the whale wash and ends up trapping both sharks. Given an ovation by the other fish, Oscar finally has enough and confesses that he is not a Sharkslayer and that it was the anchor that had killed Frankie. He then stated to Don Lino that everyone likes Lenny for the way he is, strongly urging him not to prejudge people before he knows them properly and to not make the mistake, he made in prejudging his wealth. Realizing that Oscar is right, Don Lino apologizes to Lenny and reconciles with him while making peace with Oscar, stating that he and his gang bear him no ill will. Oscar forsakes all the wealth he has acquired, makes peace with the sharks, becomes manager of the Whale Wash (now frequented by sharks), and starts dating Angie and starts to have a happy, honest life. In the post-credits scene, Lola comes to see Oscar in the top of the reef, wanting to make amends with him for what she did, but all she finds is a hermit named Crazy Joe waiting for her.

Lorenzo "Shakes" Carcaterra (Jason Patric), Thomas "Tommy" Marcano (Billy Crudup), Michael Sullivan (Brad Pitt), and John Reilly (Ron Eldard) are four childhood friends who grew up in Hell's Kitchen, New York City in the mid-1960s. Hell's kitchen was an immigrant neighborhood and life was tough. Domestic violence was a daily occurrence, but the Kitchen also protected its own from outside criminals. During this time, the local priest, Father Bobby Carillo (Robert De Niro), plays a very important part in their lives and keeps an eye on them. They served as altar boys at the church. However, early on they start running small errands for a local gangster, King Benny (Vittorio Gassman). The boys also had a competition going on who could play the boldest prank. Mostly it was innocent stuff like sitting in the priest's chamber of the confession booth, or poking holes into walls to ogle at naked women changing clothes in the change rooms. On a summer day in 1967, their lives take a sharp turn when they almost kill a man after pulling a prank on a hot dog vendor. They accidentally roll the cart down a set of subway stairs, severely injuring an elderly man. As punishment, they are all sentenced to serve time at the Wilkinson Home for Boys in Upstate New York. Shakes is given six-to-twelve months, while the others are given 12-to-18 months. The juvenile center is full of hard-core offenders, with no method for rehabilitation. There, the boys are systematically beaten, abused, and sexually assaulted by guards Sean Nokes (Kevin Bacon), Henry Addison (Jeffrey Donovan), Adam Styler (Lennie Loftin), and Ralph Ferguson (Terry Kinney). These traumatic events change the boys and their friendship forever. Father Bobby visited the boys regularly, but Nokes warned them not to say anything else the reprisals would be severe. Father Bobby gives Shakes the strength to keep going. Mr. Carlson (John Slattery) is the English teacher at the facility and appreciates the interest that Shakes shows in the subject. Guard Marlboro (James Pickens Jr.) is the only one who tries to protect the boys a little bit from the brutality of the predators. When at the facility, the boys participate in Wilkinson's annual football game between the guards and inmates. Michael convinces inmate Rizzo Robinson (Eugene Byrd) to help win the game. Humiliated, the guards move the boys to solitary confinement for weeks, where they are systematically beaten. Rizzo does not survive, and his family is told he had died of pneumonia. In spring 1968, shortly before Shakes's release from Wilkinson, he suggests the boys publicly report the abuse. The others refuse, with Michael asserting that no one would believe them or care, and they vow to never speak of it again. The night before Shakes is released, Nokes and the other guards arrange a "farewell party", in which the four boys are brutally sexually assaulted worse than they have been before. Fourteen years later in 1981, John and Tommy, now gangsters, find Sean Nokes in a Hell's Kitchen pub. When John and Tommy confront him, he dismisses the abuse he put them through. They both shoot him dead in front of several witnesses. Mike, now an assistant District Attorney, arranges to be assigned to the case, secretly intending to botch the prosecution to use it as a means of getting revenge. Moreover, he and Shakes begin forging a plan to get their revenge on all the guards who abused them. Together with many of their lifelong friends, especially Carol (Minnie Driver), a social worker, and King Benny, they manage to carry out their revenge using information on all the Wilkinson guards compiled by Mike previously. Benny spreads the word not to touch Mike and forbids any hits on Mike for taking the case against John and Tommy. Mike says that all Juvenile records are destroyed after 7 years, so there is no link between them and the guards anymore. They hire Danny Snyder (Dustin Hoffman), a washed-up, alcoholic lawyer, to defend John and Tommy to make it seem as if the case is hopeless, allowing them to carry out their plan without being watched. Benny gets involved and 2 of the 4 witnessed change their minds about testifying against John and Tommy. Mike provides all the research to Danny to prove that one of the witnesses who testifies to have seen both John and Tommy walk out of the pub, was drunk at the time of the shooting. However, to clinch the case they need a key witness who can give John and Tommy an alibi. Shakes has a long talk with Father Bobby and tells him about the abuse they suffered at Wilkinson. Mike calls Ralph Ferguson as a character witness in court. Again, Danny has been provided a detailed list of questions to expose Ferguson and Nokes as serial abusers of kids at the juvenile facility. Ferguson breaks down under the strain of the questions and his oath and admits to all accusations against him and Nokes. After a few days of soul-searching, Father Bobby agrees to lie on the stand about where John and Tommy were on the night of the shooting; the priest swears under oath that they were with him at Madison Square Garden at a New York Knicks basketball game. As a result, they are acquitted. The remaining guards are also punished for their crimes: one, Henry Addison, is killed by the drug gang run by the older brother of Rizzo (who was informed by Benny about Addison's crimes against Rizzo), a boy killed years before in the Wilkinson Home; the other, Adam Styler, a corrupt policeman accused of extorting and killing a drug dealer, is exposed, and arrested. Mike and Shakes had provided all the evidence against Adam to a detective, who was Benny's cousin. After the case is over, Mike quits his job as an attorney and moves to the English countryside where he becomes a carpenter; John drinks himself to death and Tommy is eventually murdered, both within a few years of the acquittal.
