The Trolls are small creatures who live in an almost perpetual state of happiness, singing, dancing and hugging all day. However, they are discovered by the Bergens, large miserable creatures, who can feel happy only after eating a Troll. The Bergens imprison the trolls and eat them every year on a special occasion, called Trollstice. The Trolls, led by their king, King Peppy, with his baby daughter, Princess Poppy, escape through underground tunnels on the day of Trollstice, when Prince Gristle Jr. was going to eat his first Troll. Enraged, Gristle Jr.'s father King Gristle Sr. banishes his Chef who was in charge of the Trollstice preparation. 20 years later, (at the age of 20) Poppy throws a big party to celebrate the Trolls' escape, despite the fears and warnings of the gray troll, Branch, that loud parties will attract the Bergens. A Zen troll named Creek, who is Poppy's boyfriend, arrives and tells Branch to start being happy instead of being grumpy; Branch refuses. At the party, Branch's fears come true, when Chef sees the fireworks and kidnaps Guy Diamond, Biggie with Mr. Dinkles, Fuzzbert, Smidge, Satin with Chenille, D.J. Suki, Cooper, and Creek (which Poppy tried to rescue). Chef then takes the kidnapped Trolls back to Bergen Town, while secretly plotting to overthrow its monarchy in revenge for her banishment.. The Bergens put the Trolls and their tree in a cage, and hold an annual festival called "Trollstice", in which each Bergen gets its feeling of happiness, by eating a Troll. Young Prince Gristle wakes up his father, the King, on the day of Trollstice. All the Bergens gather around the Troll tree as Chef gets ready to cook up some Trolls. Since it is Gristle's first time ever eating a Troll, Chef prepares to hand over the happiest Troll, Princess Poppy. When she picks from the tree, Chef finds that all the Trolls have been replaced with wooden dolls with crazy hair. The Trolls, led by their King Peppy (Jeffrey Tambor), had escape through underground tunnels on the day that Prince Gristle Jr. (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) would eat his first Troll. The furious Bergen King Gristle Sr. (John Cleese) banishes his Chef (Christine Baranski) who was in charge of the Troll preparation. The Chef vows to find the Trolls, plotting to overthrow the monarchy as revenge. 20 years later, King Peppy's daughter, the extremely happy and optimistic troll Princess Poppy (Anna Kendrick), throws a big party to celebrate the Trolls' escape, despite the fears and warnings of the gray troll, Branch (Justin Timberlake), that loud parties will attract the Bergens. He lives in a bunker to protect himself from the Bergens, and he refuses Poppy's invitation to the party. Troll friends include Biggie (James Corden) a big Troll with a worm friend named Mr. Dinkles, Guy Diamond (Kunal Nayyar) who has an auto-tuned voice and can fart glitter, Cooper (Ron Funches) a giraffe-like Troll, Satin and Chenille (Aino Jawo and Caroline Hjelt) the fashionistas, DJ Suki (Gwen Stefani), and Creek (Russell Brand) a zen-like Troll. Branch's fears become true when Chef sees the fireworks. Chef now looks ragged and disheveled, having spent the last 2 decades searching for the Trolls. She goes stomping down into the forest and starts grabbing Trolls. Chef captures a number of Trolls, including her secret crush, Creek. Poppy is among the Trolls who manage to hide but discovers that none of the other Trolls dare to venture to Bergen Town to rescue their friends. While the rest of the Trolls take refuge in Branch's survival bunker, who reluctantly permits them to do so, Poppy sets off alone to rescue her friends. Poppy sings an upbeat song about not letting anything get her down, until she is caught in a spider web. Four spiders approach her, but they are scared off by Branch as he whips his hair at them to hold them back, causing them to walk into the mouth of a bigger creature. Branch decides to join Poppy in her quest. Branch thinks her quest is hopeless and reluctantly follows her only to escape his crowded bunker. Poppy and Branch rest for the night. Poppy starts to sing and say goodnight to pictures of all her captured friends, which bugs Branch. Poppy gets out her ukulele and starts singing "The Sounds of Silence", with other forest creatures joining in. Branch asks Poppy for the ukulele, and he just tosses it into the fire. Poppy and Branch wind up in Bergen Town and see how gloomy all the Bergens are in their everyday lives. Poppy and Branch find their friends in the castle as they follow the light from the Trolls' wristbands that signal the hugging hour. Poppy and Branch sneak into the castle of the now King Gristle Jr. and see Chef serving Creek to him. Gristle appears to eat Creek, but Poppy still holds out hope that he is alive. Chef hands over the rest of the Trolls to Bridget (Zooey Deschanel), a scullery maid, to keep them until it is time for Trollstice. Poppy and Branch discover that their friends are being guarded by the Scullery Maid Bridget (Zooey Deschanel), and strike a deal with her: If she frees their friends, they will help her get a date with the now King Gristle Jr. When Branch refuses to sing along with the others in the ensuing musical number, he and Poppy argue, and he reveals that he has refused to sing ever since a Trollstice many years ago. On that day, his singing drew the attention of Chef, who found his home and took his grandmother away as she sacrificed herself to save Branch's life, which made him lose his happiness and turn into what he is now. Feeling empathetic, Poppy, her friends and Bridget comfort Branch with a hug, which convinces him to help the group save Creek. They give Bridget a makeover and sit on her head to give her a full head of colorful hair under the guise of Lady Glitter Sparkles. Later with the help of the Trolls, Bridget gets her date with Gristle at a roller rink and arcade restaurant disguised as Lady Glitter Sparkles, and Bridget helps the Trolls escape. However, things go wrong when Poppy and her friends try to rescue the last Troll, the Zen-like Troll Creek (Russell Brand), who after being apparently swallowed by the young king, has been discovered being held captive in the jewel that decorates the king's mantle. Their date is interrupted by Chef, who nearly catches Bridget. She flees and leaves behind a roller-skate, which Gristle keeps. While the Trolls are successful in stealing the jewel, they are dismayed to discover that it is empty and even more shocked by being captured immediately afterward by Chef and discovering that Creek has betrayed them, to save himself. He steals Poppy's cowbell and leads Chef and some other Bergens to the forest to take the rest of the Trolls. Creek returns to the Troll village where using Poppy's cowbell, he lures the other Trolls out of hiding, letting them be captured by Chef and the other Bergen cooks, who lie in ambush. With all the Trolls captured and soon to be eaten, hurt that her "crush" was nothing but a cowardly traitor and feeling guilty that her actions put everyone in the hands of the Bergens, Poppy and the other Trolls fall into despair and turn gray. Branch, despite his typical grumbling, finally sings, revealing to Poppy through song that he confesses his love for her, and together they restore the colors of all of the Trolls, including Branch himself. Just before being served, the Trolls are rescued by Bridget who wants them to flee while she herself is ready to accept the Bergens' punishment for her "treason." However, Poppy does not want to abandon her Bergen friend. The Trolls return to Bergen Town and reveal to the Bergens that Bridget was in fact Lady Glittersparkles, and that she and Gristle are happily in love with each other, showing the Bergens that they too can find happiness within themselves. Joy is brought to Bergen Town as a result, and the Trolls and the Bergens end their feud. The Trolls invite the Bergen to sing and dance with them, making them feel happy. However, Chef refuses to accept the peace, and she and Creek are sent rolling out of Bergen Town into the woods via a flaming serving cart by a well-aimed spoon thrown by Bridget. King Peppy allows Poppy to become Queen of the Trolls, and she begins a friendship with Branch as they share a hug. In the end, the Trolls live in peace with the happy Bergens, Poppy is crowned their new queen. In the mid-credits, the serving cart with Chef and Creek on it stops on a hill in the middle of nowhere. Chef tries to eat Creek until he stops her, and they both get eaten by a hill-shaped monster.
