Two Puerto Rican NYPD detectives head to Paris to track down a stolen handbag.

In 1937, a soldier (Bill Hader) in a military facility (which is underground and hidden in the middle of nowhere) is being observed through a two-way mirror smoking marijuana and revealing in his euphoria what he hates about the army. The soldier complains that the army has all men, not enough women, is too secretive, and wants to share "item 9" (code for marijuana) with the whole world. A high-ranking officer closes the project, disposes of the soldier and deems marijuana illegal. Seventy years later in 2007, Dale Denton (Seth Rogen), a subpoena server wants marijuana to be made legal as he argues that everyone loves smoking weed. Dale says that marijuana makes everything better like food, music, sex and even bad movies. Dale believes that the current system is putting money in hands of the criminals and is forcing ordinary people to deal with the criminals. Dale is 25 and is dating an 18-year-old high school girl named Angela. Angela wants Dale to visit her parents, but he keeps making excuses about work. Meanwhile Angela's lab partner Clark (Arthur Napiontek) is hitting on Angela. Dale promises Angela that he will drop by for dinner with her parents that night. Dale visits his drug dealer, Saul Silver (James Franco), to buy marijuana. Saul sells Dale a Pac of the Pineapple express blend, a rare kind of strain that recently hit the market. Saul brags that he is the only dealer in town to have this strain of weed. Saul lures Dale to smoke a joint with him. While talking, Saul learns that Dale is a process server and has to wear disguises to serve legal papers to their intended recipients in person. Saul says he may know Dale's next customer, to whom Dale is serving some court papers, Ted Jones (Gary Cole). Saul buys his supply from Red, who buys it from Ted. At Ted's house, Dale is waiting outside to finish his joint when a police car pulls up. Dale witnesses Ted and a police officer, Carol Brazier (Rosie Perez), shoot and kill a rival Korean gangster. While fleeing, Dale leaves behind his roach (joint) containing Pineapple Express, the rare strain of marijuana he just purchased from Saul. Ted identifies the strain and sends his henchmen Budlofsky (Kevin Corrigan) and Matheson (Craig Robinson) to Red (Danny McBride), a dealer who tells them about Saul. Dale rushes back to Saul & at his apartment, Dale learns Ted is a drug lord and could trace the roach (as only Red and Saul have the Pineapple Express strain). Dale and Saul decide they must flee the city. They attempt to hide in the woods where Dale's car battery dies. Dale and Saul visit Red, who was already working with Budlofsky and had ratted Saul out. Red reveals that Ted knows who they are and intends to kill them. Dale and Saul escape, as Budlofsky comes in. Budlofsky and Matheson torture Red for information and both shoot him in the abdomen. Ted orders Budlovsky to kill Red. Meanwhile the Korean gang members are outside Ted's house and listening to all his conversations. Believing Dale's high-school girlfriend Angie to be in danger, he and Saul travel to her home. Dale shows up for dinner at his girlfriend's Angie (Amber Heard) parents' house and obviously it goes bad as Dale is bleeding and he stinks. Angie's dad pulls out his shotgun and starts shooting at Dale & Saul, but Dale manages to convince him to calm down. As Budlofsky reaches Angie's house (tracking Dale's car), Dale and Saul leave. Angie's family goes to a hotel. Meanwhile Ted and Carol talk to the Korean mob boss Cheung (Dana Lee) and tell him that his assassin is dead. Ted promises retaliation if Cheung does not withdraw Dale. Ted thinks Dale is another assassin sent by Cheung. Cheng decides to attack Ted. Dale and Saul decide they must leave the city. They sell Pineapple Express to raise bus fare, but Dale is arrested by Police Liaison Officer Bobbra (Cleo King). Dale tells Bobbra that he witnessed Brazier and Ted murder a man. Bobbra has long been suspicious of Brazier's corruption and says she will investigate. However, Saul, thinking that it is Brazier driving, hijacks the police car. Brazier hears on police radio of Dale's arrest and pursues Dale and Saul in a high-speed chase, but they escape. After Dale and Saul argue, they call each other stupid and the main reason of why they both are in this mess. Dale and Saul split up, and Saul is kidnapped. Budlofsky was waiting at Saul's grandmother's retirement home, when Saul visited her. Saul is held in Ted's lair beneath the same military facility from 1937. Dale enlists Red's help to rescue Saul. Red had miraculously survived 2 gunshots to his body and arms himself and Dale and drives Dale to the lair where Saul has been kept. Red backs out at the last minute and Dale is captured by Budlofsky. While Dale and Saul are waiting to be killed, they reconcile and plan an escape. Korean mobsters attack the barn to avenge their fellow gangster's death, the murder that Dale witnessed. Dale and Saul free themselves but are caught by Matheson (Craig Robinson). Matheson is Budlofsky's assistant and has been working with this entire time. A brawl ensues between the attacking Asians and Ted's forces who retaliate. There are heavy casualties on both sides. Saul takes on Brazier, while Dale combats Ted. Both manage to come out on top, but Matheson has the gun on Saul. Red reappears and drives his car through the barn, killing Matheson and saving Saul, but is shot by Brazier. A mobster sets off a bomb killing Ted and setting fire to the barn. Red's car explodes and lands on Brazier, killing her. Dale carries Saul from the burning barn and Red, wounded but still alive, also escapes and reconciles with them. They talk about their adventure over breakfast at a diner before Saul's grandmother picks them up and takes them to the hospital.

A single mother, with dreams of becoming a writer, has a son at the age of 15 in 1965, and goes through a failed marriage with the drug-addicted father. Seriocomic story based on the memoir by Beverly Donofrio, the movie follows a young woman who finds her life radically altered by an event from her teen years. Born in 1950, Beverly grew up bright and ambitious in a working-class neighborhood in Connecticut; her father was a tough but good-hearted cop who listened to his daughter's problems, and her mother was a nervous woman eager to imagine the worst. From an early age, Beverly displays a keen intelligence and an interest in literature, and dreams of going to college in New York and becoming a writer. However, she also develops an early interest in boys, and at 15 finds herself madly in love with a boy from her high school. However, an attempt to get his attention leads to an embarassing incident at a party, and Ray, a sweet but thick-headed 18-year-old, steps forward to defend her. Beverly and Ray end up making out, and after one thing leads to another, Beverly discovers she's pregnant. Telling Ray is only marginally less difficult than informing her parents, and at 16, Beverly is a wife and mother. Against the odds, Beverly is determined to still finish high school and go on to college, but that goal becomes more difficult with time, especially after Beverly's marriage begins to fall apart. Ray tries to do the right thing but has trouble holding a job, and becomes addicted to heroin.

In Spain 1519, two con artists, Tulio (Kevin Kline) and Miguel (Kenneth Branagh) win a map to the legendary City of Gold, El Dorado, in a rigged gambling match. Tulio and Miguel were playing with a loaded dice and won every hand. The rivals were broke and offered them a map for the last bet. Miguel recognizes the map as instructions to the lost city of El Dorado. They end up winning the map fairly, when the rivals change the dice and force them to use their dice instead. Tulio is the strategic planner, often becoming anxious and overthinking things. Miguel is more relaxed and laid-back in contrast to Tulio's more frantic nature. Tulio and Miguel are accused of cheating with loaded dice when Tulio gets down to pick up the winnings, the loaded dice falls out to the ground. The two evade capture as they both pretend that they were lied to by each other and pretend to fight for their own honor. This was only a ruse to get on top of a roof, from where the duo make their escape. They encounter a bull as soon as they get down from the roof on the other side. While getting chased by a bull and hide in water barrels, which are shortly loaded onto one of the ships to be led by Hernan Cortes (Jim Cummings) to the New World. Cortes is the merciless and ambitious conquistador leader of the expedition to find gold from the empires of the New World. The duo tries to escape from the barrels before the ship sets sail, but a huge box is placed on top of the barrels, and they are trapped. During the trip, they are caught as stowaways. Cortes says that they will be flogged and when the ship enters Cuba for resupply, and they will be enslaved on sugar plantations for the rest of their lives. Altivo is Cortes' horse and was looking for an apple that fell into the brig. Miguel lures Altivo to the brig with the apple and then uses it to bring them a pry bar, but Altivo gives them the keys to the brig instead. Tulio and Miguel manage to break free and take a rowboat with the help of Cortes' horse, Altivo (Frank Welker), in the middle of the night when everybody is asleep. While leaving, Miguel gives Altivo his apple, but the apple strikes the sails and falls into the water, and a hungry Altivo jumps in after it. Miguel and Tulio have no choice but to rescue the horse from the ocean. Altivo is a hungry horse and eats all of their food supplies, leaving Tulio and Miguel to row the longboat. They survive ferocious storms and have nothing to eat or drink. As the 2 friends accept their fate and say their goodbyes to each other, they land at an unknown shore. Soon, Miguel begins to recognize landmarks that are stated on the map starting with a stone shaped like an eagle's head, the shadow of an eagle, a weeping face, a dragon, etc. Tulio wanted to return to the boat, but Miguel lures him with the dreams of untold wealth in the City of Gold. The map leads them to final marker, a stone Stele bearing an image of the Divinities of El Dorado and their steed, which closely resemble Tulio, Miguel and Altivo. The Stele is located outside of a waterfall where a young woman named Chel approaches them, chased by a number of guards. The guards see the image of Tulio and Miguel riding Altivo as the same on the totem, and believing them to be Gods, escort them and the woman under the falls and into El Dorado, truly a city made of gold. Tulio and Miguel are brought to the city's elders, Chief Tannabok (Edward James Olmos) and Tzekel-Kan (Armand Assante) the fanatically vicious high priest who has a religious fixation for human sacrifices. While Tannabok warmly welcomes them to the city, Tzekel-Kan mainly sees them as a way to enhance his own standing. The pair are mistaken for gods when a volcano coincidentally erupts (when they get angry) but simultaneously stops (when they cool down) during an argument. Tzekel-Kan accuses Chel of being a temple thief, but she claims that she wanted to welcome the Gods into the city. Tulio orders Tzekel-Kan to release her into their custody. After celebrations offered by both Tannabok and Tzekel-Kan, the two are taken to private quarters along with the woman they met earlier, Chel (Rosie Perez), who has seen through their ploy but offers to help maintain it as long as they take her with them when they leave. The guys realize that they need Chel as they don't know any of the local customs, which they would be expected to know as Gods. Tulio is attracted to Chel. The two are showered with gifts of gold from Tannabok but disapprove of Tzekel-Kan attempting to sacrifice a civilian at the Gods' ritual. Tulio tells Tannabok the next day that they are only here for a visit but will need a boat to leave the city with the gifts the city has showered upon them. Tannabok says it will take them at least three days to construct a vessel to carry both them and the gifts given to them by the people of El Dorado. Meanwhile, Cortes has landed on the same beach and finds the longboat. He starts tracking the duo's path through the forest. Chel gets romantically close to Tulio while Miguel explores the city, coming to appreciate the peaceful life embraced by the citizens. Miguel realizes that Tzekel-Kan has been giving orders on behalf of the Gods, ruling the city by proxy. Tzekel-Kan tells Tulio that humans are imperfect, and they will never respect the Gods till they fear them. Tzekel-Kan wants to sacrifice the human offenders, but Tulio says that he will only decide after consulting with Miguel. When Tzekel-Kan sees Miguel playing a ball game with children, he demands that the Gods play against the city's best players. During the match, Tulio and Miguel are clearly over-matched, but Chel replaces the ball with a rolled-up armadillo, allowing the two to cheat and win the game. However, when Tzekel-Kan offers to have the defeated players put to death, Miguel orders him to leave the city and says that the city has no need for Tzekel-Kan anymore. As he is leaving, Tzekel-Kan sees a small cut on Miguel's forehead and realizes that they are not Gods because Gods do not bleed. The two friends are now drifting apart: Miguel, in an interview with the Chief about the ship, reveals he really wants to stay, and Tulio, increasingly in love with Chel, wants to take her and the gold and leave. Tannabok indicates to Miguel that he knows that Miguel and Tulio are not Gods and invites Miguel to stay forever, if that is what he desires. Afterward, Miguel, who has reconsidered leaving the city, overhears Tulio telling Chel that he would like her to come with them to Spain before adding he would like her to come with specifically him and to forget Miguel, straining the relationship between the two. At a party being thrown for them, Miguel and Tulio begin to argue about Tulio and Chel's conversation and Miguel's desire to stay. Tzekel-Kan conjures a giant stone jaguar to chase them through the city. Tzekel-Kan controls the jaguar as the stone animal mimics all of Tzekel-Kan's actions and through the jaguar's eyes, Tzekel-Kan can see what it sees. Tulio and Miguel manage to outwit the stone jaguar, causing both it and Tzekel-Kan to fall into a giant whirlpool, thought to be the entrance to Xibalba, the spirit world. Tzekel-Kan comes to outside El Dorado, where Cortes and his men are searching for gold. Thinking Cortes is a true God, Tzekel-Kan quickly offers to lead them to El Dorado. With their boat completed and loaded with treasures, Tulio is ready to leave but Miguel announces that he will be staying because he finds the city peaceful. As Tulio and Chel start to leave, they spot smoke on the horizon, realizing that Cortes and his men are approaching the city with the help from Tzekel-Kan. To protect the city from the Spanish troops, Tulio determines they can use the boat to slam against rock formations under the waterfall path that will cave in and block access to the city. The city residents pull down a large statue to create a wave to propel the boat, but Tulio cannot get the sails up to give the boat enough speed to avoid the statue. Miguel forgoes his chance to stay in the city and jumps into the boat with Altivo to finish hoisting the sails. The boat clears the statue in time, and Tulio's plan is successful. Though the boat and its treasures are lost, the entrance to El Dorado is sealed for good. Tulio, Miguel, Chel, and Altivo hide as Tzekel-Kan brings Cortes and his men towards the waterfall. Once Tzekal-Kan finds out that the entrance has been blocked, an angry Cortes takes this as a lie. Cortes and his men then march away with a humiliated Tzekel-Kan in their hands. Tulio, Miguel, and Chel, though disappointed they lost their treasure, take off in a different direction for a new adventure, unaware that Altivo still wears the golden horseshoes he was outfitted with in the city.

Policeman Charlie Lang (Nicolas Cage) is a kind and generous man who loves his job and the Queens borough of New York City where he lives. Bo (Wendell Pierce) is Charlie's partner and together they work to maintain the peace in their neighborhood. Charlie is a good listener and loved kids. Charlie only wanted to help the community and never shied away from helping where he could (helping a blind man cross the street, teaching kids how to play baseball, catching petty thieves, delivering a baby on the public bus and so on) His wife Muriel (Rosie Perez) works in a hairdressing salon and, unlike Charlie, is selfish, greedy and materialistic, constantly complaining about their situation in life. Muriel hated Queens. Waitress Yvonne Biasi (Bridget Fonda) is bankrupt because her husband Eddie (Stanley Tucci), whom she could not yet afford to divorce, emptied their joint checking account and spent all the money without her permission, while also leaving her with a credit card debt of over $12,000. The court holds her responsible for the entire bill; moreover, Yvonne's boss docks her pay for the time she spent in court, even though Yvonne gave ample notice. Charlie meets Yvonne when she waits on him at the diner where she works. Since Charlie has cash to cover the bill but doesn't have enough money to pay the tip. So, he promises to give her either double the tip or half of his prospective lottery winnings the next day. Yvonne is sure that she will never see Charlie again in her life. Charlie wins a $4 million share of $64 million (in 21 annual payments) in the lottery the next day (as 16 other people picked the same numbers) and keeps his promise, despite the protests of his wife. Muriel sees this as an opportunity to become a spokesperson for her favorite beauty products. Muriel asks Charlie to do the right thing for them, but he is adamant that he gave Yvonne his word. Charlie returns to the diner and asks Yvonne to choose if she wants double the tip or half of the lottery (without telling her that he won the lottery). Yvonne goes for the split of the lottery and Charlie reveals that it is $4 million. Yvonne believes that Charlie is making fun of her string of bad luck, but he convinces her that they won $4 million in the New York State Lottery. For Charlie, a promise is a promise. Charlie and Yvonne become stars almost immediately. Yvonne buys the diner she was working in and promptly fires her ex-boss. She sets up a table with Charlie's name at which people who cannot afford food can eat for free. In another development, Charlie becomes a hero for foiling an attempted robbery at a grocery store but gets wounded in the process. Following a commendation, he takes mandatory leave from the NYPD. At a gathering on a chartered boat for the lottery winners and other members of high society, Muriel gets to know the newly rich Jack Gross (Seymour Cassel). She flirts with him and develops a strong liking for him, which is mutual. Both Yvonne and Charlie miss the cruise because he had to go and make change for her taxi driver and bond over dinner. Meanwhile, Charlie and Yvonne spend a lot of time together, on one occasion paying for the train journeys of passengers of the subway, and on another treating the children of his neighborhood to a day out at Yankee Stadium, about which there is a media report. Muriel gets fed up with Charlie's constant donations and overall simplicity and throws him out of their apartment, asking for a divorce. That same evening, Yvonne leaves her apartment after her husband shows up and threatens to stay until he gets $50,000 from her. Quite innocently, Charlie and Yvonne run into each other at the Plaza Hotel and, unintentionally, end up spending the night together. During divorce proceedings between Muriel and Charlie, Muriel demands all the money that Charlie won for herself. Charlie doesn't mind giving his share of the money but Muriel also wants the money he gave Yvonne, and Charlie's steadfast unwillingness to do so causes Muriel to take the case to court. The jury decides in her favor. Yvonne, feeling guilty at costing Charlie all his money, runs out of court in tears and tries to keep away from him. But the cop, by now hopelessly in love with the waitress, finds her at the diner and tells her that the money means nothing to him, and they declare their love for each other. While ruminating about their future at the diner and considering a possible move to Buffalo, they are gracious enough to provide a hungry and poor customer some soup, which he eats at the Charlie Lang Table. The poor customer is none other than the disguised undercover photojournalist Angel Dupree (Isaac Hayes), who takes photos of the couple and in the next day's newspapers publicly eulogies their willingness to feed a hungry and poor man even in their darkest hour. Just as Charlie and Yvonne are moving out of town, the citizens of New York City, no doubt touched by the generosity of the couple, send "the cop and the waitress" thousands of letters with tips totaling over $600,000, enough to help pay their debts. After Muriel gets remarried, her new husband Jack Gross flees the country with all the money from their checking account, revealing himself to be a con man. She then has no option but to move in with her mother in the Bronx and go back to her old manicure job. Eddie Biasi, now divorced from Yvonne, ends up becoming a taxi driver. Charlie happily returns to the police force and Yvonne reclaims the diner. At the film's end, Charlie and Yvonne get married and begin their honeymoon by taking off from Central Park in a hot air balloon that bears the New York Post headline "Cop Weds Waitress".

In Minneapolis, Minnesota, Caroline (Marisa Tomei) rushes home from her job as a waitress to get ready for a date. When her boyfriend, Steven (Paul Douglas Law), arrives to pick her up, instead of taking her out, he breaks up with her. That night, the broken-hearted Caroline commiserates with her best friend, Cindy (Rosie Perez), and fellow waitress, Mary (Marquetta Senters), at Jim's Bakery and Coffee Shop. Cindy forbids Caroline from calling Steven, and Mary urges her to stop being a doormat. Caroline returns to work the following night and finds Adam (Christian Slater), an attractive but taciturn busboy, wounded in the kitchen. She cleans and bandages the cut in his hand and notices his skin is covered in sap from his day job at a Christmas tree farm. Caroline laments that her parents no longer buy real Christmas trees, opting instead for an artificial one. She points out that Adam never speaks, but doesn't hear him when he whispers "thank you" as she walks away. In the dining room, Caroline finds two men, Howard and Patsy (Kyle Secor and Willie Garson), pounding the cigarette machine and complaining that it "ate" their money. Caroline intervenes, and Howard recognizes her. When he and Patsy sit at a table in Mary's section, they request that Caroline wait on them. As she takes their order, Howard reminds Caroline that they met at a Fourth of July party, where she got drunk and embarrassed herself. After her shift ends at 4:00 a.m., Caroline walks home alone. Howard and Patsy drunkenly speed past her in Howard's car and offer her a ride. Caroline declines. They pursue her on foot. She tries to run, but they team up against her and attack. Howard bangs her head on the ground until she loses consciousness and he prepares to rape her. Suddenly, Adam the busboy appears and stops them from further harming Caroline by brutally beating Howard and Patsy to the ground, then wraps Caroline in his coat and carries her home. He lays her on the front porch swing at her house and watches over her until she wakes up. Caroline jumps when she sees Adam, and he walks away without a word. For the next few days, Caroline calls in sick to work and refuses to talk to anyone about the incident. When she finally returns to the diner, she confronts Adam, asking how he knew where she lived. He admits he has been following her home regularly to make sure she is safe. He apologizes for being late the night she was attacked. Caroline kisses his cheek and thanks him. Later, Caroline asks Cindy what she thinks about Adam. Cindy admits he is attractive but laments that he is weird and never speaks. She pesters Caroline about her lack of follow-through with various projects, including opening a flower shop and going to beauty school. When her shift is over at 2:00 a.m., Caroline waits for her younger brother, Michael, to pick her up, but he never shows. She starts to walk home alone but sees Adam in the parking lot, and they walk together. He points out constellations and explains that shooting stars are meteors falling to Earth. He shows Caroline his basement apartment, but she becomes nervous when she finds a photograph of herself that Adam took from the diner. Two days later, on Christmas morning, Caroline wakes up to discover a real Christmas tree in her bedroom. She bakes cookies and takes them to Adam's apartment to thank him for the tree. He shows her his collection of old records, given to him by a nun named Mother Camilla at the orphanage where he grew up. He claims the records are magical and tells her about his sickly childhood, and how Mother Camilla told him his late father was an adventurer who stole enchanted rubies to cure Adam's heart condition. His father was killed by a "baboon king," but when the animal learned of Adam's illness, it removed its own heart and put it in the boy's chest. Caroline is shocked that Adam still believes Mother Camilla's story, but admits it is charming. She offers to cut his hair short and brings him back to her house. Adam recalls feeling alienated as a child, when he had to be quarantined, and says he has never been good with people. As she combs his hair, Caroline talks about her tendency to chase after love. Adam reaches out and touches her breast. She stops combing and leads him to her bedroom, where they undress. Adam breaks into tears, and Caroline consoles him. She whispers that she is going to fall in love with him and promises to give him her heart. Back at work, Caroline invites Adam to her parents' New Years Eve party. When he arrives, he spends two hours with Caroline's cat on the front porch. She finds him outside and makes a wish on a star, but Adam points out that she is wishing on Mars. At midnight, they kiss. Another few days later, Caroline goes ice-skating with Cindy, who is skeptical when Caroline admits she has been dating Adam. Caroline reveals that when she was attacked and nearly raped and that Adam saved her, but Cindy still believes Caroline might be selling herself short. She persuades Caroline to go on a blind date with a man named Ronnie. However, on a double date with Cindy and her boyfriend, Caroline expresses no interest in Ronnie. They end up at the diner, where Caroline goes in search of Adam just as he is attacked by Howard and Patsy in the parking lot. Adam stumbles inside the diner with a stab wound in his abdomen. Frantic, Caroline accompanies him to the hospital, where a doctor tells her Adam has congenital heart disease and is in need of a transplant. Caroline identifies Howard and Patsy in a police line-up. Another day or two later, Caroline takes a beauty school exam but is too distracted and storms out. Adam flees the hospital and surprises Caroline at home. She mentions that he needs a heart transplant or he will die very soon, but Adam rejects the idea, insisting he must keep his heart. He worries that he will not love Caroline the same way if he gets a different one, but she assures him he loves with his mind and soul. Sometime later, Caroline takes Adam to an ice hockey game for his 25th birthday. They have a great time, and on the drive home, Adam falls asleep. When they arrive at his apartment, Caroline discovers Adam is dead. At his funeral, Caroline tells Cindy Adam was the only thing she did not give up on, and claims he was an angel. She goes to his apartment and finds a gift he planned to give to her on his birthday: his box of records, with a note telling her he no longer needs them because all of his wishes have come true. Caroline listens to one of the records and smiles.
