The story of an ordinary man who goes through a lot in his life and is forced to join the underworld.

Vijay and Ravi, two best friends do well in life and fall in love. Unfortunately, both of them fall in love with the same girl. Fate has it that, love leads to major misunderstanding between the two best friend.

Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) and Sunil (Shashi Kapoor) are burglars who are assigned to kidnap the son of Seth Mathur (Shreeram Lagoo), Bittoo. They get enrolled in the school to get close to the kid. There Vijay meets Anju (Parveen Babi) and Sunil meets Shalu (Hema Malini). Unaware of their background, the girls fall in love. However as time comes close, the boys realise they cannot kidnap Bittoo due to their affection towards him. Sunil`s boss Uncle Jagdish (Kader Khan) loses hope on him and he himself comes up with a plan and abducts the boy. Whether or not the two are able to protect their friend from their uncle, forms the rest of the story.

A police officer framed for drug possession escapes jail while his wife is institutionalized. Years later, their son becomes a feared crime boss who falls for a thief, leading to dangerous consequences. Inspector Shiv Nath is a honest and diligent police officer in Bombay, and lives with his wife, Radha, and a young son, Arjun. While making several arrests in connection with counterfeit money and drugs, he comes to know that his close friend, Karamchand is also involved in this racket. Before he could take any action, he himself is arrested by the police for possession of fake money and drugs, and sentenced to a jail term, but he escapes and his whereabouts are unknown. Radha loses her mind and is institutionalized, while Arjun takes to petty crime and on reaching adult-hood is the Don of the area known and feared as "Dus Numbri". He meets with and falls in love with a petty thief and card-sharp, Rosemary Fernandes. When Radha accidentally meets with Rosemary, she thinks it is Sundari, Karamchand's wife, and then Radha starts to regain her sanity. Anjana (Madhubala), a wealthy rich girl returns to her home after completing her education degree. She is picked by at the station by her father's Dwarka Natha (Jayant) employee Ramesh (Anoop Kumar). Dwarka Nath is a tough task master, runs an estate and beats up his local tribal workforce with whips. The tribal dislike Dwarka's inhumane behavior towards locals, including tribal strongman Banno Singh (Sajjan) & Jhumroo (Kishore Kumar). Jhumroo and Banno are both contenders to be the next commander of the tribe. Jhumroo's mother Kamli defends Dwarka in front of the tribe and says that he should not be pronounced guilty without a fair trial. Jhumroo sings with a very sweet voice and Anjana is intrigued. Anjana also meets Bihari Kaka (M. Kumar) who earlier used to live with Dwarka in his estate but has lost his family since then and turned alcoholic. Bihari & Dwarka used to be best friends but have since drifted apart. Bihari now lives in the outhouse of Dwarka's mansion. Chamki (Chanchal) is a tribal who is in love with Jhumroo. Anjana visits their stall at a local fair, where Chamki tries to steal Rs 100 from Anjana (she refuses to give change for a 100, after she forced Anjana to buy stuff from her). Anjana had bought stuff worth Rs 21 and 5 Annas, and gave Chamki a Rs 100 bill, but Chamki claims that Anjana never gave her any money. Jhumroo intervenes and forces Chamki to return Anjana's Rs 100 bill. Chamki feels insulted in front of the entire tribe and punctures Ramesh's car tires (as Ramesh had driven Anjana to the fair) and Jhumroo offers to walk Anjana home. Anjana realizes that this is the same Jhumroo whom she heard singing. Jhumroo says that he learned the song from his mother and offers to take her home to meet her. Anjana says that she will come some other time. Meanwhile, Chamki warns Jhumroo to stay away from Anjana. Anjana comes to meet Jhumroo's foster Mother Kamli (Lalita Pawar), who taught him to sing. But every time Kamli sings, she has a nightmare, and she bursts into tears while lamenting the loss of her girl child. Dwarka hears Anjana singing the same song at his home and knows that she has visited the tribal colony. Dwarka bans her from visiting the tribal in the area. Jhumroo comes to visit Anjana and climbs into her room. They both realize that they share an interest in mountain climbing. Anjana starts dating Jhumroo by hiding it from her father. Meanwhile Ramesh has a crush on Anjana. Dwarka tells Ramesh not to allow her to visit the tribal colony. Ramesh goes with Anjana and realizes that she is meeting Jhumroo, which he comes back and reports to Dwarka. Tribal elections are at hand and Kamli wants Jhumroo to be elected as leader, which Banno contests. Banno says that Jhumroo is more interested in chasing girls from the city, than looking after the interests of the tribe. Kamli says that Banno is only trying to defame Jhumroo and that she is confident that Jhumroo will never go against his own mother's wishes. Kamli promises the tribe that Jhumroo will marry within the tribe and not outside of it. Dwarka can sense something brewing and announces Anjana's engagement to Ramesh. Dwarka gives a lavish engagement party. Chamki tell Jhumroo about the party at Dwarka's house. Jhumroo meets Anjana in secret and asks her to come to the tribal festival after the election of the tribal commander. Jhumroo is shocked to see that Anjana is now engaged to Ramesh. Dwarka discovers Jhumroo and has him whipped. As Jhumroo returns to the tribe, Banno makes fun of him and declares that Jhumroo is not fit to be the tribal commander. Next day is the tribal commander elections and Kamli forces Jhumroo to compete with Banno for her sake, even though Jhumroo has no desire to be commander as he has lost Anjana. Jhumroo beats Banno in all sports and hand to hand combat and is elected leader of the tribe. As per tradition, all tribal virgins dance for Jhumroo and whoever garlands him first will be his wife. Anjana enters the dance with a mask and garlands Jhumroo before Chamki. Jhumroo knows that Anjana loves him. Dwarka intervenes and forcibly takes Anjana back Kamli sees Anjana is the daughter of Dwarka and asks Jhumroo to bring her back, which he does by kidnapping her from her house. But Dwarka intercepts them and brings Anjana back and slaps her. That night Bihari Kaka visits Anjana and tells her that years ago Dwarka dated a tribal, who gave birth to Anjana. But Dwarka refused to marry her due to his social status. But Dwarka loved his child and stole Anjana from her mother. The tribal took their anger out on Bihari (who used to serve Dwarka back then) by stealing his son. Bihari's wife died due to the shock and Dwarka duped Bihari into signing all property over to him. Bihari tells Anjana to ask of her mother from Kamli. Dwarka knows Bihari spoke to Anjana and visits Kamli to warn her not to disclose her real identity, else Dwarka will evict all tribal from his land. Kamli does what she is told and refuses to meet Anjana when she comes. Meanwhile Bihari commits suicide and Dwarka uses this to his advantage by telling Anjana she Bihari lied to her, out of vengeance Jhumroo comes to meet Anjana and Dwarka tells Anjana that he will have Jhumroo shot, unless she refuses to acknowledge his love and refuses to marry him. Anjana does what she is told and tells Jhumroo to leave. Anjana admits the truth to Ramesh. Ramesh wants the lovers to unite and helps Jhumroo infiltrate his own wedding and take Anjana away. Jhumroo and Anjana get married in their tribe. As Dwarka attacks the tribal settlement, it is revealed that Jhumroo is Bihari's son and Anjana is Kamli's daughter. Dwarka is defeated in the fight, but Kamli saves him. Dwarka finally marries Kamli.

Mahender has been responsible for the upbringing of Tomato, a young child at a very early age.
