The film then flashbacks to the past to her childhood. Michelle was a girl who lost her eyesight and hearing after recovering from an illness at the age of two and exists in a black world where she is isolated in the darkness of her own existence, trapped by her inability to see, hear and express. She grows up becoming more and more frustrated by the black and dark world around her, making her a violent, uncontrollable eight-year-old child. Her parents, Paul and Catherine, are at their wits' end trying to control her, until one day the light shines through the end of the tunnel. Debraj Sahai enters their lives, an elderly alcoholic teacher for the deaf and blind, Debraj sees himself as a magician and is a disillusioned eccentric man. He takes it upon himself to bring young Michelle into the light. He uses harsh methods, although always for Michelle's long-term benefit. Initially, his methods are met with disapproval by Michelle's father, who asks Debraj to leave. Although her father thinks he is gone, Debraj stays as the teacher while her father is away on business for 20 days. Her mother grudgingly approves of his continuation given her fear of Michelle being sent to an asylum. By the 20th day, Debraj manages to teach Michelle some words and better manners, but he has difficulty teaching her the meaning of words. When Michelle's father returns, Debraj packs his bags. At the very last moment, as he is walking towards the door suitcase in hand, Debraj gets frustrated with Michelle's continuing insolent behavior, and he throws her into a fountain full of water. Michelle suddenly takes to Debraj's lessons at that moment and begins to understand meaning. She is able to recognize her mother and father and can vocalize the first syllables of some words. The McNallys decide to keep Debraj as Michelle's teacher. Many years later, Michelle has learned a great deal, becoming relaxed and expressive, and she is even able to dance and expertly sign. Debraj convinces the Principal of a university to grant her an interview which she passes and gets admission to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree, the first deaf-blind person to do so at that university. Michelle moves away from home and lives with Debraj and one of her servants. Over the next 2 years, she struggles to gain her Bachelor of Arts degree, failing year after year, but she still maintains her spirit. One reason is that she must rely on Debraj completely for interpretation of the material and studying. This problem is overcome by the Principal of the school preparing the whole first-year Arts course of study in Braille. Another reason for her continuing failure is that her typing skills are lacking and typing is her only way to write down what she knows during exams. However, she also soon overcomes this deficiency through another flash of increased of competence when she almost quits the university and gets into an argument with Debraj. As the same time as Michelle suffers through and triumphs over her challenges, we also witness numerous other changes. Debraj begins to succumb to Alzheimer's, first forgetting the way out of the Principal's office and then forgetting Michelle and leaving her stranded during an ice cream celebration for her improved typing. We also see Michelle reconcile with her sister Sara, who we find out was jealous of her parents' affection for Michelle throughout her life. After attending Sara's wedding, Michelle begins to wonder about love, which she has not experienced, and she even asks Debraj to kiss her on the lips. Debraj reluctantly does so but decides to leave Michelle on her own because of this demand and the position she has put him in. Twelve years after enrollment, Michelle does manage to gain her BA, and with her proud parents looking on her, she even gives a speech to the graduating class. Wearing no black graduation robe, she thanks her parents and her teacher and she announces that she will only wear the robe so that her teacher may see her first. Debraj is in a mental hospital due to his almost complete inability to remember his past and even how to speak. Michelle visits him wearing her robe and we see glimmers of memory return as Debraj realizes that she has graduated and even does a victory dance. As the window opens to the rain outside, we see Debraj's hand in Michelle's reaching into the rain, and we hear the teacher-student pair say the first syllable of the word "water", with echoes of the scene in which Michelle first begins understanding the meaning of words earlier in the movie. However, this time, it is Debraj who is beginning to learn to speak and understand. The movie ends with a scene of Michelle among a crowd of people all dressed in black carrying candles walking towards a church. There is a voiceover of a letter Michelle has written to Debraj's friend Mrs Nair explaining that today was her teacher's first day of school, and that like hers, his alphabet began with "B L A C K", implying that Debraj had finally succumbed to his illness and died.

When Sameer asks for Nandini's hand in marriage, her family refuses, having already chosen a husband for her. Sameer returns to Italy. When Vanraj, Nandini's husband, realizes that his new bride has been in love with someone else, he is prepared to sacrifice his love for her and take her to Italy to be reunited with her true love, Sameer. Indian-based traditional family of Pundit Darbar (Vikram Gokhale) gets a visit from Sameer Rossellini (Salman Khan), from Italy, who has come as a pupil to learn music and singing. Darbar and his family accept him. Sameer meets Nandini (Aishwarya Rai), Darbar's daughter, and both fall in love. But Darbar wants Nandini to wed Vanraj (Ajay Devgan), and has Sameer swear that he will leave India, and not marry Nandini, as his fee, to which Sameer agrees. Nandini is heartbroken, but does reluctantly marry Vanraj. When Vanraj finds out that Nandini is in love with Sameer, he takes her to Italy, so that they can be together again. Nandini must now come to terms with living with Sameer in Italy, or alienating her family and her new groom. Nandini (Aishwarya Rai) is the daughter of Pundit Mahaveer Darbar (Vikram Gokhale), a renowned proponent of Indian classical music. It is announced that a young man named Sameer Rosselline (Salman Khan) will be arriving to stay with the Darbar family (Including the Grandmother (Zohra Sehgal), mother Amritaa (Smita Jaykar), brother Tarun (Vinay Pathak), brother Bhairaon (Kenny Desai) (his wife Pushpa), youngest brother Nilesh, sister Shilpa (Dimple Inamdar). Mahaveer's sister Kamna (Rekha Rao)), as he wants to grasp the intricacies of Indian classical music under the guidance of the Pundit. He is accommodated in Nandini's room, causing her to take a dislike to Sameer. Sameer speaks to his dead father via sounds of thunder in the atmosphere. His father warns him against going to this place to learn music. Sameer cannot understand why and is determined to learn from Mahaveer. Mahaveer wont take a fee for his teachings. But he reserves the right to ask for a Gurudakshina at any time in the future. Sameer has a jovial nature and befriends everyone in the house with his antics, except Nandini. At first the two tease and prank one another (Nandini teaches Sameer a prank Namaskar to make a fool out of him in front of Mahaveer. Sameer farts when he thinks he is alone, but Nandini sees this). Sameer tells Nandini that soon her love will take her to Italy (he reads her feet as a form of reading the future). They become friends and start spending even more time together in front of the entire family (in events, games, picnics etc). Nandini teaches Sameer the various Gujrati dance forms and they also play the game of statue. But soon enough they fall deeply in love. The two spend romantic moments during several family events, including weddings and festivals. Nandini's cousin Anu is getting married. Unknown to anyone in the family Anu had a boyfriend, but Anu pushes her away as he waited for too long and now she has been promised to someone else and she cannot go against the honor of her family. Nandini and Sameer flirt a lot during the wedding. Nandini slaps Sameer for frolicking with her publicly during the wedding. Due to this Sameer locks himself up in his room. Vanraj (son of advocate Vikramjeet (Rajeev Varma)) arrives at the wedding and falls in love with Nandini when she performs a dance for all the guests. Vanraj sends a marriage proposal to Nandini and the process is on. Nandini is worried that Sameer is involved in fun and games while Mahaveer and Amritaa are planning her wedding to Vanraj. Kamna finds out about the affair between Sameer and Nandini. Kamna hates Nandini and she is disrespectful towards her. Meanwhile Anu comes back after fighting with her in-laws. Bhairaon and Mahaveer rule that Anu has to go back to her husband's house, no matter what. Nandini stands up for Anu and says that she does not love her husband and should not be forced to return. But Mahaveer is adamant and tells Nandini not to interfere. Nandini and Sameer help Anu run away with her lover, but Kamna sees this. Bhairaon goes berserk and blames Mahaveer for this calamity. Mahaveer blames Bhairaon for not giving the right values to Anu. But Kamna interjects and tells Mahaveer that even Nandini is having an affair, so Mahaveer should not question others. The pair are caught rehearsing their wedding vows by the Pundit and he is enraged since he has already planned Nandini's wedding with Vanraj (Ajay Devgan), who had fallen in love with her during her cousin Anu's (Sheeba Chaddha) wedding. Sameer is banished from the household and the Pundit quits singing since he believes Nandini has brought shame to the family. Sameer is asked never to meet Nandini again (Mahaveer asks for this as his Gurudakshina). Although he eventually leaves for Italy, he writes letters to Nandini asking her to join him, but his letters do not reach her. After a futile suicide attempt (she cuts her wrists and bleeds off into the swimming pool), Nandini reluctantly weds Vanraj. He tries to consummate their marriage on their wedding night, but Nandini is disgusted by his approach and acts coldly towards him. He asks her for an explanation but she chooses to remain silent. Nandini finally receives Sameer's letters (The house servant delivers them to her, when she was already married and in her new house) and Vanraj walks in on her reading them. He is enraged and initially decides to return her to her parents, but soon realizes that since she is in love with another man, the right thing to do would be to unite the pair. Vanraj seeks his parents consent, which they give after disagreeing at first. Nandini and Vanraj arrive in Italy but come up against dead ends searching for Sameer. They almost find Sameer at a cafe, when they see a drawing from him in their guest book. Nandini chases after Sameer but nearly dies in the path of an oncoming tram. Vanraj saves Nandini.. They gradually become friends and start to enjoy each other's company. During their search, they are mobbed and Nandini is shot in the arm. Vanraj carries Nandini to the hospital in his arms and saves her life. Moved by Vanraj's gentleness and affection towards her, Nandini begins to warm up to him. Vanraj has to sell his wedding ring, as he had no money left for Nandini's hospital bills. Eventually, they are able to locate Sameer through his mother Zooni (Helen), and Vanraj dutifully arranges for their meeting on the night of Sameer's debut concert. He then bids goodbye to Nandini and walks away heartbroken. Upon meeting Sameer, she apologizes to him and tells him that she has come to love Vanraj. She reflects on the unwavering love and devotion that Vanraj has showered upon her throughout their relationship, and realizes that Vanraj is her true soul mate. Sameer realizes that she doesn't have that love for him which he saw in her long back. Heartbroken, Sameer lets her go back to Vanraj which she readily accepts and Sameer breaks down after she leaves and his mother consoles him. She runs back to Vanraj and he tells her that he cannot live without her. Vanraj adorns a Mangala Sutra around her neck and they embrace each other.
