The film is about a forest officer, Suriya,(Uday Kiran) who with a volition of culminating bribery from the forest department faces a menace from Simha Perumal (Radha Ravi), who is a forest product smuggler. Kanthaswamy is about the economical differences that prevail between different classes of the Indian population. The film`s protagonist is an investigating officer of high rank. While handling problems related to the country`s security and development, the officer goes through specific property details of affluent businessmen and NRIs. On further investigation, he finds that the wide gap between the rich and the poor is the root cause for so many problems. He tries to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor. By using his position and power, Vikram identifies and unearths crores of rupees of unaccounted money tucked away by the bigwigs in strange nooks and corners of the globe under varied names and ownerships and distributes them legitimately to the middle class and lower middle class people. Thus, he becomes a hero like a modern day Robin Hood. All the adventures he goes through on his mission is what makes the film fascinating.

Karthik (Krishnudu) comes to Hyderabad and gets recruited by an ad agency. There he meets Kalpana (Sonia) and starts liking her. Due to his easy going nature, he is not taken seriously and Kalpana too finds faults within him as a result of their initial interactions. However, she starts interacting with him. Simbhu shares his name with two other people -a villain and a cop-turned-baddie and the situations arising out of it promise enough curiosity for a while as soon as the movie opens. ``Polladhavan`` is a mixture of all the genres including action, romance and humor. Dhanush plays Prabhu, a youth from a lower middle class family with dreams and aspirations to make it big in life. Velli (Reema Sen) is the 'head mermaid' at this stall run by her sister, and bitter quarrels between Shakti and Velli ensue, when Shakti feels that Velli and her team are unfairly taking their customers away and Velli has this impression of Shakti being an unsavoury character. This misunderstanding is seen at different occasions where Velli and Madhavan just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time - be it when Shakti gets off the bus from his village, asks for directions and is told to follow Velli, walking in the distance (Velli thinks he's a womaniser) or when Shakti finally catches up with a miscreant who had picked his pocket and demands his money backâ€"only Velli walks into the scene only at the demanding part. This whole collage of scenes is animated, with Kirikalam and Shakti trying to woo customers back to their stall, Shakti and Velli getting into arguments and a general state of "fun" ruckus. Of course, love has been brewing as an undercurrent between the two young people. Manivannan plays the character of the owner of the exhibition grounds and keeps harassing Velli under some pretext or the other, like the rent not being paid on time.
