Akendra alias Topichand Bhangare runs an antique store as a front for illegal activities. He lives near the notorious Chor Bazaar (thieves market) area with his wife, Sulekha, and only daughter, Kiran. He would like Kiran to get married to the mother of all gangsters, and picks gangster Shakti Dada, who is currently undergoing a lengthy prison sentence, to be his prospective son-in-law. But Kiran already loves Raj Oberoi, who belongs to a wealthy family, and has no links with any gangsters. Kiran convinces Raj in order to meet with her dad's requirements, he must first become a gangster. Raj reluctantly agrees, and is introduced to a gangster-trainer called Subramaniam. After a number of misadventures, Raj finally accomplishes his goal, and qualifies to be a suitable groom for Kiran. Then things change abruptly with the arrival of Topichand's dad, a wealthy man, Thakur Rana, who strongly opposes Kiran's marriage with any gangster. When caught in the act by dad, they kill him and his driver, Satpal (Mushtaq Khan) and arrange an accident with the help of another employee Manikchand (Tinnu Anand). When Nirmal returns he is informed of the accident, and he believes his dad dies of a car accident. One day while romancing with his girlfriend Sandhya (Mamta Kulkarni), he comes across Satpal, who is now confined in a mental institution. Curious to see what Satpal has to say about the accident, Nirmal arranges for more qualified doctors in the big city to examine Satpal. Unknown to Nirmal, Superintendent of Police Thappa (Raj Babbar) is plotting with Raja (also played by Sanjay Kapoor) to kill Nirmal and take his place, Raja's girlfriend, Nisha (Manisha Koirala) overhears this and questions Raja, but Raja lies to her. Things start to change for the worst for Nirmal's dad and Diwanji when Raja is introduced to the family, and with the help of Thappa establishes his identity and fools everyone. CK congratulates Kaushalya for her courage and decides to support the kid and make him powerful. Oberoi raises a child as his own as it was his love child, and the child Vijay Kumar (Ajay Devgn) grows to live up to his expectations. Vijay stands up for the rights of the downtrodden and helpless and stands up to bullies in college. Vijay starts his own construction company and starts competing against Oberoi constructions led by Jagat Mama (Paresh Rawal). Jagat is livid that Vijay is winning contracts that traditionally went to Oberois. CK supports Vijay 100% and admonishes Jagat when he tries to bully Vijay. CK's wife is Sharda (Reena Roy). Raja (Ajinkya Deo) is CK and Sharda's son. Madhu (Raveena Tondon) is the daughter of CK's friend Judge Amarnath (Satyendra Kapoor). Madhu meets Vijay when she was travelling with Raja to a dance competition. Raja's car breaks down and Vijay was fixing his own car. Madhu thinks he is a mechanic. Turns out Raja was driving with his hand brakes on. Annu (Guddi Maruti) is Madhu's best friend. Annu is a journalist and is hunting for Vijay's interview, who is a noted industrialist. Madhu barges into Vijay's cabin an interviews an employee of his, thinking that the employee is Vijay. The employee flirts with Madhu and she is disgusted. that evening, Vijay is the chief guest (invited by CK Oberoi and introduced by him) at Madhu's dance performance and that's how she finds out who is the real Vijay. Vijay professes his love for Madhu, and she agrees. They start dating, which Raja sees. Jagat fills poison in Raja's heart and Raja bribes an employee (Rajesh Puri) of Vijay to get their tender details. Raja starts winning contracts that used to go to Vijay. Vijay finds the mole, but instead of firing him, he takes on all responsibility of the employee's daughter's marriage. The employee is ashamed and vows his loyalty to Vijay. Meanwhile CK admonishes Raja for using underhand tactics against Vijay. Raja is aghast and questions his relationship with Vijay, to which Sharda objects. Raja and Jagat pay Sampat (Kiran Kumar), a mill union leader, to conduct a strike in Vijay's mill. But Vijay is a friend of the workers, and the strike fails. Humiliated, Sampat tries to kill Vijay by dropping heavy machine on him inside his factory. But Vijay escapes and attacks Sampat and his goons at their hideout and Sampat is arrested by the police. Vijay is up for election as President of the Mill Owner's Association, but when he finds that CK is standing for the post, he withdraws his nomination publicly. At the party, Raja tries to insult Vijay over his unknown origins and his beggar type upbringing, but Vijay turns the tables saying that he is funding the party for CK and that Raja and Jagat are eating his food. Raja is humiliated. Raja alleges to Sharda that Vijay is CK's illegal son, and she slaps him, hard. Jagat tells Sharda to get Raja married to Madhu. But Kaushalya gets there first and secures Madhu for Vijay. when CK and Sharda get there, CK supports the decision to wed Madhu to Vijay. Sharda is angry at this decision. Jagat then instigates Amarnath that Vijay is an illegal son of God knows who, and hence cannot be socially acceptable. Amarnath cancels the wedding with Vijay, and Amarnath begs Sharda to accept Madhu as bride for Raja. Kaushalya has a heart attack and dies from the shock. Madhu reaches Vijay and vows to be with him. Raja attacks Vijay, and this time Vijay beats him back. Raja is bloodied and Vijay drops him back at his home. Sharda goes to confront Vijay, and this is the first time she actually looks at him. Vijay looks exactly like a guy named Dev whom she used to date, back before she was married to CK. Sharda realizes that Vijay is her son from Dev and not CK's. Sharda rushes home to confront Jagat and says that he was wrong to tell her all those yrs ago that her child was born dead. Raja attacks Vijay and injures him badly, but CK intervenes at the right time and saves him. CK reports to the police and tells them to arrest Raja, Jagat and Sampat for the attack on Vijay. CK gives his own blood to save Vijay. He confronts Sharda, who admits that Vijay was born to her before her marriage to CK. And Jagat lied to her saying that she gave birth to a dead son. Raja and Jagat abduct Sharda and CK and want CK to sign over all assets to Raja. CK signs the papers, but then Raja wants to forcefully marry Madhu, which CK objects to. Raja slaps Sharda, which wakes Vijay up in his bed at the hospital. Vijay attacks and saves everyone. CK picks a gun to shoot Raja, but Vijay stops this by taking the bullet himself. All is forgiven and Vijay married Madhu.

A waiter and his girlfriend devise a plan to kidnap a rich man who is his look-alike. But things go awry when they get trapped in their own plan. Naive Raja is employed as a lowly waiter in a hotel. One day he serves and looks after a wealthy businessman K.K., who lends him a suit, and gives him some money, so that he could find a rich woman to woo and marry. Raja thinks Sapna is wealthy and successfully woos her and wins her heart, only to find out that she too is on the lookout for a rich prince charming. She thought Raja was the rich, debonair, and eligible bachelor Rahul Saxena. With the help of garage owner, Sattarbhai all three of them concoct a plot to kidnap Rahul Saxena, hold him for ransom, while Raja takes his place. After kidnapping him, Raja does take his place with Rahul's family, his stepmom, Sharda, dad Dhanraj, uncle, aunt, and sweetheart Sona. Sona happens to be the daughter of Raja's mentor K.K., and this arouses anger with K.K. when he finds out that Raja has chosen Sona to seduce. Priya was 2 years old when her parents died in a car crash. Priya learned dance at her orphanage. Raj was a chief guest at her first function and offered to open up a dance academy where Priya could teach children. Later he asked for marriage. Priya and Dev meet on a cruise (Priya has won a contest and Dev is going to meet his grandma Suhana Devi (Sharmila Tagore), who lives on an island where only the cruise ship goes) (Priya undresses in Dev's cabin, thinking it is her cabin and Dev thinks Priya is a prostitute). Dev becomes fond of Priya. Dev is a fun-loving, flamboyant Casanova. He tries to get close to Priya. Initially, she doesn't get impressed by Dev (she even slaps him after he tries to get his hands on her during a serenade song. Dev offers to be friends with Priya after she tells him that she is engaged. But then Dev wants Priya to help with his other "conquests" on the ship, which she finds disgusting, but goes along as otherwise he won't leave her alone), but later falls in love with him (she gets jealous as Dev serenades other women on the ship and realizes that she is in love. Dev also stops the paparazzi who try to harass Priya by threatening to ruin her reputation by printing their pics being together). Dev takes Priya to meet his grandma. Priya and Suhana get along very well with each other. Suhana asks Priya to follow her heart. she is in tears when she leaves the island. Next day Bombay will come and the 2 will be separated. Dev admits his feelings for Priya. He begs for 6 months to work hard and prove his love for her. However, due to them already being engaged to other people, they agree to work everything out and meet in 6 months on Valentine's Day to get married. During the 6 months, Dev breaks off his engagement with Anita (Raj was there when Dev publicly broke off his engagement with Anita and applauds his commitment towards his love) and starts working hard (he even takes up menial jobs such as painting zebra crossings and ad posters on billboards). Driven by his love, he creates and auctions beautiful paintings, and becomes very successful along with the support of his friend Nattu (Neeraj Vora). On the other hand, Priya realizes that leaving Raj will be wrong (the headmistress of her orphanage tells Priya that if she leaves Raj, then going forward no decent man will ever marry a girl from the orphanage) and sadly writes a letter to Dev, explaining everything. When Raj gets the letter instead, he supports Priya and convinces her to go to Dev. Things take a bad turn when, on her way to meet him, Priya gets hit by a car and gets her legs amputated. Dev, who waited all night for Priya, believes she has rejected him, as he does not know of her accident. Priya forbids Raj from telling Dev the truth, not wanting to become a burden on him. Now, Priya spends her time running a musical academy for small kids. Though heartbroken, Dev continues his career and goes on to become a famous painter. One day, Priya attends his art exhibition and wishes to buy a painting of his, a sentimental picture of her speaking to his beloved grandmother, whom Dev had introduced to her during the cruise. Dev had said that he would not sell the painting as it was only for Priya, but upon hearing that the girl who wanted it understands the emotion behind the picture and is disabled, he tells the host of the exhibition to give the painting to her for free. One day, he meets Priya again with Raj at a theatre gathering but again Priya forbids Raj of telling the truth. He visits Priya to give her an anklet that his grandmother, who recently died, had wished for Priya to have when she became Dev's bride. Initially unaware of Priya's condition, Dev realizes the truth when he remembers giving the painting to a handicapped girl and finds the same painting in another room. The two embrace tearfully and he assures Priya that he will love her no matter what. Dev and Priya then married by Raj, where Dev carries Priya for the wedding rounds in the presence of Nattu and the children of the Musical academy.

55 years after attaining independence from the British, India still continues to struggle against issues such as crime, poverty, malnourishment, and corruption. A honest businessman Ranjit Singh, who is forced to bribe the State Chief Minister, Bandrekar, and a Pakistani ISI Agent, Ansari, so that he can open an arms factory; Megha, a press reporter, who witnesses the death of 3 terrorists at the hands of Raj, the son of the Chief Minister; D.C.P. Arun Bedi, who at one time was known as the Sarfaresh-E-Hind, is now a mere tool in the hands of his politically-motivated superiors and politicians; Ranjit's son, Amar, who is a college student, gets killed by terrorists; Pappu, the Chief Minister's married son, carries on with a number of prostitutes in his residence; and a crippled soldier sings and bemoans the regression everywhere. Amidst this background, Raj recalls that his father had killed his mother during his childhood, and has him arrested - knowing fully well that his father is a man who had not hesitated to kill his wife, will not surely spare him. The question remains: Will the authorities be able to protect the son against the father? After completing his studies in London, Shakti Thakur returns to his ancestral village in India, accompanied by his girlfriend, Anita, whom he is in love with and wants to marry, much to the disapproval of his family. Shakti harbors ambitions of opening a chain of fast-food restaurants, a vision that contrasts sharply with his family's traditional values and expectations. Back in the village, Shakti quickly becomes disillusioned by the stagnant atmosphere and the deep-rooted animosity that still plagues the townspeople. He informs his father, the zamindar Raja Thakur, that he intends to sell his share of the family's property to fund his business venture. Raja Thakur, who raised Shakti as a single parent after his mother died when Shakti was just a year old, pleads with his son to stay in the village and use his education for the betterment of the community. He emphasizes that "a man gets an education not to become a selfish being but to uplift his uneducated brothers and society." However, Shakti, frustrated by the ongoing feud between his father and his uncle, Zamindar Birju, and the behavior of his older brother, a perpetual drunk and an embarrassment to the family, decides to leave. The village is deeply affected by the longstanding feud between Raja Thakur and his younger brother Birju, a disabled man whose son, Bali Thakur, holds a deep grudge against Raja Thakur. This rivalry, fueled by Bali Thakur's desire to one-up his uncle, keeps the village divided and stifles its progress. While spending time in the village, Shakti engages in a game of sticks (a traditional Indian sport) with Bali Thakur's men, which he wins, further aggravating the tension between the two factions. During a visit to an old temple that had been closed off due to a longstanding dispute between Raja Thakur and Birju Thakur over who had rights to it, Shakti insists on entering, and his friend and servant Sukhiya breaks open the lock. Bali Thakur hears of this and incites a brutal riot between the two village factions. Raja Thakur, desperate to prevent further bloodshed, considers apologizing, but Shakti insists that he or Sukhiya should apologize instead. However, when Shakti looks for Sukhiya, he learns that Bali Thakur's men have cut off Sukhiya's hand as punishment for opening the temple, leading Raja Thakur's men to retaliate by burning down the homes of Bali Thakur's supporters. Frustrated by the lack of justice after Sukhiya's arm is cut off, Shakti confronts the head police officer about why they are not taking action. The officer explains that the villagers refuse to come forward as witnesses to such violent acts, making it difficult for the police to intervene. Despite this setback, the police officer becomes supportive of Shakti. To prevent the situation from escalating further, Shakti enlists the help of a government official friend to legally open the temple for all, with his father's reluctant approval. Offended by this move, Bali Thakur retaliates by hiring goons to destroy a dam that protects Raja Thakur's side of the village. A female villager notices the goons near the dam but does not think much of it at the time. The dam is subsequently destroyed with explosives, leading to a devastating flood that kills many villagers, including infants, leaving Shakti deeply grieved The same female villager, whose son died in the flood, angrily recognizes one of the goons in the village. She confronts him, leading Shakti to capture the goon and hand him over to the police. However, the goon, out of fear for his family's safety, refuses to implicate Bali Thakur in the crime. Later, Bali Thakur intimidates Narayan, a villager living in Raja Thakur's area, into closing off a portion of his land, making it difficult for the public to reach the main road. This action was done at the suggestion of Bali's lawyer, further complicating the ongoing conflict. In a village panchayat called to resolve the issue, accusations fly from both sides. Without any evidence, Bali Thakur accuses Raja Thakur of orchestrating attacks on his brother's family and insults him relentlessly. Disrespected and heartbroken, Raja Thakur returns home and dies from a heart attack that night. During the funeral, Birju Thakur grieves the death of his brother, while Bali Thakur reacts with cold indifference and annoyance. Shakti, now burdened with the role of the village head, reluctantly takes on his father's duties. After becoming the village head, Shakti makes his older brother swear to stop drinking, and his brother agrees. However, Bali Thakur's men, under the influence of Bali's lawyer, try to get Shakti's brother drunk again to manipulate him into signing away the village's property deed, but Shakti intervenes just in time to prevent the betrayal. As time passes, the villagers express concerns about the land that has been closed off, leading to longer travel times. Shakti successfully convinces Narayan to open the land by arranging a marriage between Narayan's daughter, Gehna, and a well-to-do man from the village and the police agree to provide protection to stop Bali men interfering. However, on the wedding day, the groom flees in fear of Bali Thakur. Distraught and feeling dishonored, Narayan believes his daughter will be stigmatized and live in constant fear. Shakti steps in and marries Gehna himself, despite still having feelings for Anita. Although their marriage begins awkwardly, Shakti and Gehna gradually move on. When Anita returns and learns the truth, she is left heartbroken. Although saddened by the turn of events, she understands the situation and leaves. Shakti, too, closes the chapter about his girlfriend and starts his new life with his wife Bali Thakur, enraged by the series of events-including the opening of the land, Shakti stopping him from tricking his older brother into signing over the family land, and the village panchayat's decision to honor Shakti's family with the right to host the village festival for reopening the temple-plots a final act of vengeance. Despite Shakti's kind offer to let Bali oversee the festival, Bali refuses, threatening to cut off Shakti's head, further escalating tensions. Bali then devises a plan to plant a bomb at the festival, determined to exact revenge. Bali's parents, Birju and his mother, become aware of his plot and, horrified, try to stop him. They attempt to call the police, but Bali, in his blind rage, imprisons them. Birju pleads with his son to end the violence, but his pleas fall on deaf ears. Bali's mother manages to escape and runs to the festival to warn Shakti of the bomb, but she arrives too late, and the bomb explodes, resulting in multiple deaths. In the aftermath of the explosion, a furious Shakti searches for Bali at his home. He finds a devastated and remorseful Birju, who does not know where Bali is hiding but Birju does not know, Shakti decides to help Birju and his innocent family by bringing them to his home, however both factions of the village, wanting revenge, go after Bali Thakur and his family. Shakti protects the innocent family and convinces the villagers to leave. Appreciative of Shakti's efforts to protect them, Birju Thakur finally ends his enmity towards him. Meanwhile, the police launch a manhunt for Bali in connection with the bombing. The next day, Shakti notices Bali's mother walking into the chicken coop area on his property and realizes that Bali is hiding there. Shakti follows her and confronts Bali, who is hiding inside. Bali's mother begs him to flee and escape the consequences of his actions, but Bali, consumed by his hatred for Shakti, refuses. When his mother tries to stop him from attacking Shakti, Bali spits in her face and kicks her in the stomach. Enraged by this, Shakti attacks and overpowers Bali, but ultimately spares his life, urging him to surrender to the police. However, Bali refuses to give up his vendetta and tries to attack Shakti again. He flees to an area filled with statues and idols, where the two engage in a final, intense battle with weapons. In the struggle, Shakti decapitates Bali with an axe, an act that leaves him devastated as he realizes that Bali has forced him to unleash his dark side. Although other villagers are willing to take the blame for Bali Thakur's murder, Shakti gives himself up to the police to end the cycle of violence once and for all. The film depicts the true meaning of education as "a tool to uplift uneducated people".

While fetching for a scoop for his report, Suraj`s brother Arun is murdered. Suraj vows to avenge his brother`s murderer. He tracks down Chakku Pande and puts him behind bars.

The village of Dhauladhar is situated in the mountains set among some of most scenic beauties that nature has to offer. Inder (Tinnu Anand) is a TV serial director who arrives in Dhauladhar to film his latest episode. He hires a guide (Sudhir Pandey) who helps him scout for potential shooting locations. He takes Inder to a large banyan tree which has 2 graves under its vast canopy. An old Medicant (Sanjay Dutt) lives under the banyan tree, who says that the graves belong to Sahibaan and Gopi and proceeds to narrate their story. Sahibaan (Madhuri Dixit) lives a poor lifestyle in a small village in rural India along with her mom (Anjana Mumtaz), dad Balakram (Satyendra Kapoor), and a mentally challenged cousin Kheru (Javed Khan). Balakram makes a living selling dolls. Sahibaan is in love with a homeless laborer, Gopi (Rishi Kapoor), who lives near temples and eats whatever the villagers give him. Gopi plays a melodious tune on his flute, which attracts Sahibaan to him. Gopi works as a shepherd to earn some money for his sustenance. Sahibaan is childish in her behavior and doesn't realize that she is a grown woman now. Sahibaan is 18 years old but insists that her father carries her on his shoulders and plays marbles with the children of the village. Gopi admonishes her and one day she falls into a river. Gopi looks at her water drenched body and sends her home. Gopi is very afraid of the water and says that he doesn't know how to swim. That day she grows up, throws her marbles away and starts helping her mother around the house. Sahibaan learns to cook food and sew clothes as well. She expresses her love to Gopi, who accepts. The area is ruled by ruthless killer, alcoholic and womanizer Kunwar Vijay Pal Singh (Sanjay Dutt). He is sympathetic towards the poor and has a rivalry with the landlord of the nearby province Tikka (Kiran Kumar). Tikka is considered ruthless towards his workers and Vijay stands up to him and his goons and fights for the rights of his village's workers. Vijay increases the daily wages for his workers from Rs 1.5/day to Rs 3/day. Due to this all of Tikka's workers come to work for Vijay and this enrages Tikka. Tikka forcibly takes the workers back to him lumber mills by whipping them and torturing their families. In retaliation, Vijay kills one of Tikka's supervisors. Mrs Tikka (Beena Banerjee) & Tikka's sister Rajkumari Razee (Sonu Walia) live with Tiika. Every night Vijay ravishes a new prostitute and sends her away the next morning. Tikka sends an assassin to Kill Vijay, but Vijay kills him instead. Tikka bribes Inspector (Mangal Dhillon) to open a murder investigation against Vijay. Inspector tries to get Vijay's fingerprints on his gun, in order to frame him, but Vijay is too clever and had already worn gloves. One day while chasing a rabbit, Sahibaan ends up in the palace ground of Vijay & is abducted by his guards and left at the mercy of Vijay, but Sahibaan manages to escape. Vijay, however, is unable to get her out of his mind and asks Diwan Durga Singh (Bharat Kapoor) to search high and low for her. The Diwan is able to find her during a Mela and takes several men, sweetmeats, jewelry and clothing to propose to a delighted and disbelieving Balakram and his wife. The same day Gopi was planning to ask for Sahibaan's hand in marriage from her dad. Meanwhile at the Mela, Razee was also present and was attracted to Gopi. Sahibaan's parents are angered when Sahibaan refuses to marry Vijay and asks them to get her to marry Gopi. When Gopi proposes to Balakram, Gopi is humiliated, beaten and asked to leave. Diwan returns to Vijay, who decides to kill Gopi. Vijay locates Gopi, beats him, and throws him in the river. Razee finds Gopi at a riverbank, barely alive and persuades Tikka to take him home. When Sahibaan says that Vijay had attempted to molest her, Balakram refuses to permit her to marry Vijay, despite of the fact that Vijay promises to stop drinking alcohol and having his way with women. Vijay forbids Durga Singh from abducting Sahibaan again, as he truly loves her. Both Balakram and Sahibaan set out to try and locate Gopi, as Sahibaan is convinced that he is alive. They find Gopi's clothes near a funeral pyre (these clothes were discarded by Razee as they were drenched in blood) and assumes that Gopi is now dead. Meanwhile Gopi gains consciousness under Razee's care. Tikka finds that Vijay is in love with Sahibaan. Gopi overhears this and runs after Sahibaan. Razee stops him and tells him that she loves him, but Gopi has already promised himself to Sahibaan. She convinces Gopi to come back and promises to take him to Sahibaan once the rains subside. Tikka agrees to help Razee as he wants to deny Vijay at all costs. Meanwhile Sahibaan gives up and agrees to marry Vijay. Tikka confronts Vijay but is instead beaten up by Vijay. But this gives time for Gopi to reach Sahibaan. Razee helps Gopi and Sahibaan escape, but Vijay pursues them. Durga stops Gopi and Sahibaan by putting rocks in their horse carriage path. Razee dies when the carriage overturns. Durga tries to convince Sahibaan, but she jumps into the river to escape. Vijay arrives and shoots Durga. Gopi jumps after Sahibaan. Vijay jumps to save both but can only flush out their dead bodies.

Beta is the story of Raju (Anil Kapoor), the only child of a widowed multi-millionaire Prem Chaudhary (Akash Khuranna). Raju's father can provide him anything he wants but Raju's only desire is to get mother's love. Raju had lost his mother at birth and feels deeply deprived of a mother's love. On Raju's 5th birthday party, to please him, his father gets married to Laxmi (Aruna Irani), thinking that she will take care of Raju more than his real mother would. However, Lakshmi Devi turns out to be greedy, shrewd and cunning. She married Raju's father only for his vast fortune, money and property. Together with her brother Totaram (Anupam Kher) and his wife Mynavati (Bharati Achrekar), they conspire on how to transfer all property to Lakshmi Devi's name. However, Lakshmi Devi and Totaram are enraged when they find out that Prem's first wife had prepared a will before her death transferring all property to Raju, and that Prem is only a trustee to all the wealth. In the will, it has been written that Raju will have full control of his property only after marriage and unless his wife jointly consents with him, he will not be able to transfer his wealth and property to another name. Raju becomes completely devoted to his stepmother, doing whatever she wishes. He showers Lakshmi Devi with love and respect, ever-ready to obey her every word. Raju refuses education for his mother as she explains that despite education, man can only achieve a job for others, but he should work for his own self. When his father finds out that Raju stopped going to school at Lakshmi Devi's instructions, he calls out to her to question her. Lakshmi Devi and Totaram, hearing Prem, pours oil on the steps causing him to fall down the flight of stairs and hurting his head severely. Using this opportunity, they prove that Prem has become mentally unstable, and they lock him up in a corner room of the house. Raju being naive and uneducated, believes every word of his step-mother and her brother. Over the years, Lakshmi Devi increasingly isolates his aging father from the family and mainly Raju. Raju, meanwhile, meets Saraswati (Madhuri Dixit) and the two fall in love after Raju sees her being abducted, slapped and assaulted at a fair. After Raju saves her from being assaulted, the two fall in love and Raju marries Saraswati after everyone in the village believes that she is no longer chaste. In the meantime, Lakshmi Devi fixes an alliance for Raju with an equally uneducated girl from their own village, so that she too can be manipulated and can finally succeed in transferring the property in Lakshmi Devi and her son, Ramesh (Adi Irani), Raju's step brother's name. Lakshmi Devi is shocked to learn about Raju and Saraswati's marriage as Lakshmi Devi knows that Saraswati was not only educated but also a very intelligent girl. As usual, Lakshmi Devi puts on an act of a doting mother in front of Saraswati. Saraswati discovers that Laxmi's motherly love for Raju is fake and all what Laxmi is interested in, is capturing Raju's wealth. She is horrified to find Raju's father being treated as a mentally ill patient. Only after speaking to him does, she realizes that the reason for Raju's naive nature and uneducated status is because his stepmother manipulated him into being uneducated so that she can take advantage of him. Laxmi already has another son who is being educated but also seeks Raju's wealth which his mother Laxmi intends for him to inherit. And thus begins a battle within the household between daughter-in-law and mother-in-law which involves Saraswati trying to outdo Laxmi. Initially, Saraswati allows Raju's father to come out of his prison and insists that there is nothing wrong with him. She voices her concerns to Raju about his mother, resulting in Saraswati being slapped repeatedly around the courtyard of the house in front of all the family members. Saraswati is ready to leave the house at this point but wisely decides to apologize to her mother-in-law, only to take an oath to protect her husband and her house from Laxmi's immoral intentions. This humiliation does not deter Saraswati who cleverly starts exposing Laxmi's every step in a dignified manner for the sake of her husband. She publicly exposes the fact that Raju's younger step-brother has not received a degree in Medicine, rather that he has bought a fake one. In one incident, Saraswati, along with Prem and their faithful servants Pandu (Lakshmi Devikant Berde) and Champa (Priya Arun), planned for Lakshmi Devi to slip and fall, forcing her to be bedridden. Promptly, the responsibility of the entire household is handed over to Saraswati. Upon discovering that Saraswati is pregnant, Laxmi finally decides that enough is enough and tries to poison Saraswati by mixing poison with saffron which she knows that Saraswati will mix with her milk before she drinks it. Champa, who witnessed Lakshmi Devi mixing the poison, runs to Saraswati's rescue, narrating everything that happened and warns her against drinking the poisoned milk. Saraswati approaches Raju and tells him the truth once again. Raju refuses to believe Saraswati, even when she takes an oath upon her unborn child's life and decides to prove Saraswati wrong by offering to drink the poisoned milk himself. Only when Raju begins to cough up blood, does he realize that Saraswati was telling the truth after all. He confronts his mother in his usual innocent manner and asks her why she had forsaken him and tells her that had she simply asked him for his wealth, he would have happily agreed to give her all he had. He tells Laxmi that his last dying wish will be that he would request his mother to at least once with a clean her to call him 'her son', so that he may now die in peace. His words touch Laxmi deeply and she realizes the cruelty that she has shown her son who has only ever loved her. There is a brief altercation between Laxmi and her real son who still wishes to procure Raju's wealth. Raju, in his deteriorating state still manages to save his mother from his stepbrother. Raju recovers following treatment and agreeing to give up his worldly possessions to his mother and leaving home with his wife and father. However, at the last moment, Laxmi begs him not to leave, claiming to have learned the error of her ways; she tears up all the property papers and tells him that she does not want his wealth, all she wants is 'her son' and nothing more.

Mohan Kumar (Dilip Kumar) is a honest and conscientious man working as the General Manager of a shipping company owned by his friend, Dinesh (Pradeep Kumar). When Mohan Kumar comes to know of their activities, the three men murder Dinesh and deviously frame Mohan Kumar for it. Mohan Kumar is helpless. Unable to prove his innocence in court (he was holding the gun when the police arrived at Dinesh's house.), he is sentenced to a 14-year jail term. After that Sumitra tries to attack the trio in the street but is thrown off by then and come under a commercial vehicle and dies. Mohan vows revenge against the trio after he returns from jail. After serving the jail term Mohan Kumar takes help from Puri (Ashok Kumar) whose life he had saved in prison, to take revenge on the three villains. Mohan searches for his son Ravi in orphanages and finds that he ran away several yrs ago. Puri has connections with the under-world. While Mohan Kumar is also unable to trace his son Ravi. Roma lives with her wayward uncle Jagdish (Satyen Kappu), a mean alcoholic. Unknown to Mohan Kumar, his lost son Ravi (Rishi Kapoor) is a sophisticated conman and steals money by betraying people's trust. Jugal, Bhandari and Balwant still run the smuggling business. Ravi is asked to deliver a few liquor bottles to a party at Bhandari's house. Bhandari is taking a bath, so the servant thinks Ravi is a guest and invites him in. Ravi sits at the table and plays cards, which JK sees and is impressed with his tricks. JK employs Ravi for Rs 10000 per night. Puri helps Mohan to track down JK as well as Roma. Mohan rescues Roma from Jagdish. Mohan starts by figuring out the Modus Operandi of JK's smuggling operations. He finds out the location where JK's smuggled gold is being offloaded in Bombay, by kidnapping JK's agent Teja (Kulbhushan Kharbanda). Mohan then confronts the trio and tells them that is going after their lives. JK asks Balwant to kill Mohan at the earliest. Balwant finds that Mohan is taking Roma out for dinner on her birthday. As luck would have it, Ravi was scouting the same hotel and sees Roma alone with a purse full of money. Mohan is running late and Ravi strikes a conversation with Roma. Mohan meets Ravi when he arrives & feels an unexplained affection for Ravi. when Balwant shoots at Mohan, Ravi sees it in time and pushes him away, thus saving Mohan's life. Balwant sees Ravi and reports the matter to JK. JK believes Ravi when he says that he doesn't know Mohan and agrees to be JK's spy in Mohan's house. Ravi pretends to be in love with Roma in order to get close to Mohan. Roma loves Ravi and recommends him to Mohan for a job in Mohan's office. Ravi figures out that Mohan knows the location of JK's warehouses and intends to attack. Ravi tries to warn JK but gets delayed in traffic and then his lift gets stuck. Mohan sets the warehouses on fire. Bhandari had moved all of his life's savings into those warehouses, based on threat from Mohan, that he would target his wealth. Bhandari is penniless now. Bhandari is distraught and jumps into the blazing fire to save his money and dies. Unknown to anyone, Mohan had already removed Bhandari's money bags from the warehouse and delivered them to Puri. Jugal Kishore and Balwant assign Ravi to kill Mohan Kumar For Rs 10 Lakhs. Ravi decides to kill Mohan at Puri's party that very night. Unable to do so (he hesitates while taking the shot), Ravi falls off the roof, and is ironically saved by Mohan Kumar. Kabir (Mac Mohan), one of Puri's henchmen, finds Ravi's gun. Suspicious, he spies on Ravi and finds out his connection to JK and Balwant. Mohan Kumar is enraged and throws Ravi out even though he begs that he loves Roma and respects Mohan. Balwant tries to kill Mohan Kumar but fails. Mohan Kumar chases him and hit by a truck, Balwant dies. Ravi runs into Jagdish, who tells Ravi how Mohan was convicted for Dinesh's murder. Ravi confronts Mohan in front of Roma, and Roma is devastated to know that Mohan hid this fact from her. She decides to leave with Ravi. Meanwhile JK's goon reaches Ravi's house, and they find that Ravi is in fact Mohan's son. JK decides to abduct Ravi. While abducting Ravi, JK finds that Roma is Dinesh's daughter and abducts her too. Now JK informs Mohan that his son and Roma are in his custody and demands Rs 50 Lakhs as ransom. When Mohan reaches the designated location, Ravi realizes that Mohan is his father (JK reveals the same). Ravi and Mohan team up to get the upper hand on JK, but Teja arrives to swing the equation again in JK's favor. At the end Puri arrives to disarm JK and Teja. After the death of his father, hot-headed Thakur Jaswant Singh assumes control over the region. He has no pity or empathy towards the poor. His interest lies in money, women and alcohol. The hubby (Abhi Bhattacharya) goes to get a doctor while his wife delivers in the meantime. The poor woman Leela can't have a child herself and keeps one girl for herself when she sees that the rich woman has given birth to twins. Many yrs later, the rich couple are long since dead. Geeta, a feisty girl is raised in a poor neighborhood and is a street performer with Raka (Dharmendra), while Seeta is raised by her cruel aunt Chachi Kaushalya (Manorama) and meek uncle Badrinath (Satyendra Kapoor). Chachi treats Seeta like a servant, despite the fact that the family is living off her late parents' money. Seeta's only consolation is her old wheelchair bound grandmother (Pratima Devi). Kaushalya's daughter is Shiela (Honey Irani) who treats Seeta like her personal slave. Ranjeet (Roopesh Kumar) is Kaushalya's brother and lusts for Seeta and wants to sexually assault her. Kaushalya dresses up Seeta once a month when the trustee comes to give monthly allowance from her inheritance. Kaushalya will cease to be the guardian if Seeta gets married. One day Kaushalya removes Seeta's expensive Saree and forces her to parade half naked in the house in front of Ranjeet. Seeta is champion in all housework and very docile, but Geeta is street smart and knows no housework at all. Ravi (Sanjeev Kumar) is a wealthy doctor, who is looking for an "Indian" bride. The trustee suggests Seeta. When Kaushalya finds out, she dresses Sheila in an Indian attire and Seeta in a skimpy western attire for the meeting with Ravi and his parents. Ravi leaves when Seeta drops the tea tray after being tripped by Sheila. Grandmother emerges from her room and begs Ravi and her parents not to leave Seeta. One day, Seeta decides life is not worth living and runs away to commit suicide (The night after Ravi leaves, Ranjeet enters Seeta's room late at night and tries to sexually assault her. when Seeta screams Ranjeet accuses her of stealing his wallet and beats her with a belt). At the same time Geeta leaves home as Leela hits with a Jhaadoo for playing with kids instead of taking care of housework. Raka is worries about their performance and lack of resultant income. Badrinath reports Seeta's disappearance to the police. Seeta is saved by Raka but is mistaken for her identical twin Geeta and is taken to Geeta's home. Seeta finds motherly love in Leela and gladly accepts it. Meanwhile, Seeta's aunt and uncle are frantically searching for her and find Geeta. Geeta reports a street gambler to the police and the inspector identified her as Seeta based on report of Badrinath. The inspector, Badri and Kaushalya attempt to force Geeta to go with them but, using some of her clever tricks, she escapes them and the police who have been searching for her. She then meets Ravi (Sanjeev Kumar) and, though he also mistakes her for Seeta, she goes home with him. Ravi is surprised by this "Seeta" and the Seeta he had met previously. Geeta is then taken to Badri and Kaushalya's. Geeta realizes the cruelty that Seeta has been living under and vows to teach her aunt a lesson. Meanwhile, the real Seeta is living in Geeta's house. Her surrogate mother has attributed her new docile attitude to shock. Here, Seeta meets Raka (Dharmendra), Geeta's friend and fellow performer. Raka is also surprised by "Geeta's" sudden gentle nature and desire to do housework. When he tried to coax her into performing, she is unable to do so. Ravi meanwhile falls in love with Geeta. At home, Geeta begins to set everything on a proper course. She resumes control of the money and restores her grandmother to the head of the household (by giving her the keys to the house safe and giving her the head chair at the dinner table), where she belongs. Ravi proposes to Geeta, thinking she is Seeta. Raka begins to fall in love with Seeta. Trouble begins brewing when Chachi's brother Ranjeet returns home (he is also beaten up badly by Geeta by his own belt) and sees the real Seeta in a marketplace. He follows her and discovers the truth, which leads to a showdown in the villains' den. Seeta is abducted by Ranjeet. Ranjeet brings Raka to his house to expose Geeta. Ranjeet proves that Geeta is a street performer who wanted the riches of the house and a comfortable life by duping Ravi. Geeta is arrested by the police. Leela also comes and sees the photo of the rich couple of the wall and realizes the truth that Seeta and Geeta are sisters. Leela tells the truth to Raka. Raka rescues Geeta from jail. Ranjeet brings Ravi to his lair to treat Seeta, who has injured herself. Ranjeet wants to marry Seeta to become the legal heir of her wealth. Raka and Geeta track down Seeta and attack Ranjeet's lair. A fight ensues and Ranjeet is arrested. All is well.
