The Big Sick tells the story of Pakistan-born aspiring comedian, who connects with grad student Emily after one of his stand-up sets. However, what they thought would be just a one-night stand blossoms into the real thing, which complicates the life that is expected of Kumail by his traditional Muslim parents. Then Emily is beset with a mystery illness forcing Kumailto navigate the medical crisis with her parents, Beth and Terry who he's never met, while dealing with the emotional tug-of-war between his family and his heart.

Vivan (Himesh Reshammiya) is a successful RJ on a popular radio channel in the city of Mumbai. He has acquired everything in life but his marriage is unsuccessful. Naturally he takes divorce from his wife Pooja (Sonal Sehgal), the reason cited are lack of compatibility between the two. In their hearts Vivan and Pooja don`t want the divorce but the fast pace of life and busy schedules interfere with their emotional balance. Instead of suffering more, they choose to go their separate ways. Enter Shanaya (Shenaz Treasuryvala), who is like a ray of sunshine in Vivan`s insipid life. Will the two hit it off or is Vivan still carrying a torch for his ex?

Still in love with his recently divorced wife, a RJ is asked to fake a romance with another woman to improve ratings. Recently divorced from his wife, Pooja Talwar, Gujarat-born Vivan Shah, who works as a Jockey with Mumbai's Radio Mirchi, dramatically meets with Shanaya Dhingra - whose mother is Parsi and father a Punjabi. Circumstances force him to gate-crash her wedding ceremony and spend a night in a prison cell by her enraged DCP father. Subsequently, a friendship develops between the two and she even assists him with his job - and lands one herself. The duo get so popular that their employer decides that they perform a live show on TV while the Dhingras believe the duo are in love. It is during the live TV show that Vivan will be compelled to display his true feelings and confess that he does not love Shanaya.
