Sibi Malayil

Set in the rural socio-political environment of North Malabar, Kotthu follows two party workers Shanu and Sumesh and how certain party workers are honour-bound to their `acquired` political ideology of revenge killing.

This film is about a happy couple who trust each other to the core. Things change completely when an intruder enters their personal space and disturbs the trust and love they have for each other.

Five not-so-decent men, Sunny (Lal), Aloshy (Asif Ali), Tomi (Prasanth Narayan), Murukan (Nedumudi Venu) and Basheer (Noushi), team up for a deal with a corrupt cop, Balakrishna (Sreenivasan). The deal goes kaput as one of the gang members try to outsmart the rest. Sunny had some underworld connections in the past and now spends time with the memories of his late wife, who was a musician. He treats Aloshy like his own son. Tomi is rich, thanks to his flourishing hotel business and some shady deals. His wife Jenni (Rima Kallingal) has been in love with Aloshy but Tomi is unaware about this affair. Swetha Menon plays Sareena, who has a son from her earlier marriage and lives with Murugan, a gambler.

The story of Violin revolves around two youngsters who come close to each other because of their common love for music. The setting of the plot takes place in an Anglo-Indian community at Fort Kochi.

With a sudden twist in the movie, Sreedevi (Jayasudha) who is Anjana's guardian turns out to be Menon's adolescent love. Navya and Pavan try to reunite them, leading to many comical scenes, and an enjoyable film. —Priya

Johnny is a recurrent alcoholic. After an altercation between Johnny and Keshavan (N F Varghese), the latter - who is humiliated in front of his family - decides to take revenge and hurts one of their children. During required blood transfusion it is discovered that Annie's is suffering from a late stage of Leukemia and that she only has a couple of months to live. Balan Mash (Mammootty) is an art teacher who lives in a tiny hamlet in Kerala. He has a serene life, with two children, a wife, a mother and a revolutionary brother - Gopi(Mukesh), a typical kootu kudumbam, or joint family, of Kerala. Balan Mash has an uncle who is mentally challenged. His uncle became a mental patient after a separation with his lover; this underlines the deep-rooted belief among their family that one male from each generation will go mad as a person from their past generation had sinned by throwing the idol of 'Devi' in a well.He was cursed by the goddess and became a lunatic.This curse would pass down through generations.Balan Mash's uncle finally died and the talk of the town became - "Who would be next - Balan or Gopi ?" One night changes it all, when Balan has a nightmare. People start suspecting Balan of following the footsteps of his uncle into madness because Balan's uncle (Babu Namboothiri) fell mentally ill with a nightmare. Now Balan's community evaluates each and every move he makes; he is deemed a lunatic and his actions are misinterpreted. Eventually his family joins the gang and he is sent to the asylum. The doctor declares him sane. But society doesn't agree. Helpless, Balan plays mad. Ultimately, Balan's mother (Kaviyoor Ponnamma) poisons him to free him from the world. Apart from the main story line the movie also makes a subtle sketch of the life of people in a matriarchal society. The uncle of the hero ( Ammmavan played by Thilakan) enjoys so much influence in the family affairs that he becomes a catalyst to the hero's slow but steady decline to lunacy.

In order to wed a retired wrestler's daughter, a post-master must wrestle Dara Singh. A post-master named Dilip Kumar re-locates to work in Mutharamkunnu. Once there, he sets about to meet the local residents and finds out that they are obsessed with wrestling. He meets with a proud and retired wrestler, Kuttan Pillai, and subsequently gets smitten by his daughter, Amminikutty. When he finds out that she an ardent fan of Mammooty, he lets it known that he is the latter's close friend. He intercepts her fan-mail, and even corresponds with her. Eventually she finds out and so does the rest of the town including her enraged father. Dilip attempts to flee but is prevented and must agree to wrestle in order to win her hand. Not proficient with any form of wrestling - especially with a mountain of a man, Dara Singh, - will Dilip succeed in his quest? —rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com) Dilip Kumar (Mukesh) is a deputed as postmaster to a remote village, Mutharamkunnu. There he falls in love with Ammu (Lissy) who he woos by posing as a friend of Malayalam superstar Mammootty. Wooing her is only part of the game, since he must next deal with his wily rival Dev Anand (Sreenivasan) and Ammu's father (Venu) who is obsessed with wrestling, and insists on Dilip fighting one of his star wrestlers as a qualifier to marrying his daughter. Enjoyable and well-paced, with its share of hilarious moments, this is one of Sreenivasan's early works. —Joyojeet Pal
