The story follows a couple who fall in love, plan to elope due to family discontent, and face obstacles in convincing their families.

A man named Satpal is released from prison after completing a life sentence. He decides to find his family as he knows that they believe he is dead. After searching everywhere, Satpal reaches the dance house of courtesan Meena Bai. Satpal has a conversation with Meena in secret and then dies on her bed. Meena then collects all her savings and jewels and packs them in a suitcase and sets fire to her dance house. Shankar Verma (Mithun Chakraborty) lives a poor lifestyle with his mother, Shanti (Tanuja), after his father, Satpal Verma (Vinod Mehra) died many years ago. Before his death he was involved with a courtesan by the name of Meena Bai (Rekha). Shankar stands up for the rights of the poor people in the slum colony against the rich, who try to corner their resources. Shankar studies in college where he comes into constant conflict with rich brat Balram, who is extremely insensitive towards the poor. Now, Shankar finds himself the object of affection of two beautiful women, Sunita (Moon Moon Sen), a wealthy girl of Thakur Bhanupratap Singh (Amrit Pal), and Madhu (Mandakini), a poor girl and lives with her parents, Hariya (Sharat Saxena) and Tara (Ila Arun). Sunita and Shankar are always bickering at campus. Both women think that Shankar is in love with them. Shankar is subsequently hired by a wealthy woman named Amita (Rekha) who wants him to spy on Thakur Bhanupratap, his son Jackie (Tej Sapru) & his partner Kedar (Roopesh Kumar) & Kedar's son Balram (Gulshan Grover). Shankar is hesitant to take on such an assignment, but his abject poverty and the responsibility of his sister's wedding forces him to reconsider Amita's offer. Additionally, Shanti has asthma and requires proper medical attention. When Shanti comes to know that Shankar is going to Taragarh she gets very afraid. She reveals how Bhanu was demanding interest money from the farmers at every harvest. When Satpal resisted, he was supported by Bhanu's younger brother Shashi. Shashi donates his land holdings back to the farmers. Bhanu gets Kedar to draft up an agreement with Satpal, which is fair to the villagers. But then Shashi comes to Satpal's home and finds that the agreement signed by the villagers was not what Satpal had indicated, and he had sold the interests of the villagers to Bhanu. Shashi goes to confront Satpal and Shanti only learns that Satpal killed Shashi and that the villagers killed Satpal. Kedar asks Shanti to run away with her son. Shankar manages to become a driver in Thakur Bhanupratap household and goes about this task of spying and keeps reporting his findings to Amita regularly. Turns out Sunita is Bhanu's daughter and Madhu's father Hariya is Bhanu's henchman. Sunita goes out of her way to torture Shankar. Sunita likes Shankar's guts that he would not back down in front of anyone and would fight for his rights and his dignity. Shankar saves Sunita's life and Bhanu wanted to pay him, but Shankar only wanted a note of thanks. This enrages Bhanu that Shankar wants to be treated as an equal, but Shankar stands his ground. While Madhu likes Shankar as he is poor like her and kind and compassionate. Shankar also likes Madhu and falls in love with her. Sunita comes by and professes her love to Shankar, but Shankar thinks she is talking about Madhu and agrees with her. Sunita believes that Shankar also loves her. Sunita is ecstatic and tells Madhu that she loves Shankar and Madhu is shocked. Madhu knows she has to antagonize Shankar and she performs a seductive dance in front of Kedar and Bhanu. As a result, Shankar is disillusioned and walks away. Sunita finds out that Madhu sacrificed her own love for Shankar, so Sunita could have a life with him. Through Shankar, Amita finds out that Kedar lives in Bangalore. Amita goes in front of Kedar and looking at her he has a heart attack. When Bhanu comes to meet him in hospital, Kedar tells him that Amita is alive. Bhanu smirks as he had asked Hariya to shoot Amita and he confirms that he did so. Meanwhile Amita poses as a rich heiress to Jackie and Balram in their casino. She lures Balram to come with her and pretends to buy Rs 20 Lakhs of drugs which she pretends to sell to Shankar for 40 Lakhs, disguised as a foreign buyer, Michael. Michael says that he has Rs 80 Lakhs more and asks for 2 more consignment of the drugs, but Amita is not interested. Balram and Jackie are now hooked at the prospect of a Rs 40 Lakhs profit in the deal. They buy 2 more consignments for Rs 40 Lakhs, taking the money from Kedar's safe, but the consignment turns out to be cow dung. Amita then calls Kedar and laughs at him that she took her share of Rs 40 Lakhs from him eventually. Bhanu is perplexed about how this woman could claim to be Amita. One day while talking to villagers, Shankar finds out that his father had a bad reputation and had not only betrayed the villagers, but had also killed Thakur Bhanupratap's younger brother, Shashipratap (Jeetendra). He also learns that Satpal had relations with another woman. His inquiries take him to Central Jail, but on arrival, he is told by the jail superintendent that his father had finished serving his life sentence & was released & after his release had died just 6 months ago at the Brothel of Meena Bai. This was a surprise to Shankar as he & his mother Shanti had been under the impression that his father Satpal Verma had died much earlier many years ago. Shankar then sets out to find out the whereabouts of Meena Bai, but her brothel had caught fire & was destroyed and now no one knows her whereabouts. Meanwhile Amita visits Kedar while he is alone and kills him. Little does Shankar know that Meena Bai is still alive in the shape and form of none other than Amita and is using Shankar as a tool to extract vengeance against Thakur Bhanupratap. This was confirmed to Shankar by his mother Shanti and Shankar confronts Amita. Amita says that Satpal used to consider her as his sister. She says that she and Shashi used to love each other as kids. But then Shashi went abroad for his studies and Bhanu killed her father for not paying land taxes. Amita became a dancer named Meena. One day, Shashi returned and became an alcoholic when he didn't find Amita. He goes to Meena's dance house and realizes that Meena is Amita. Amita gets pregnant in time with Shashi's child. Bhanu tricks Satpal and makes a separate agreement for him versus the rest of the villagers. The villagers consider this as Satpal's fraud and complain to Shashi. Shashi was killed by Bhanu's henchmen, but the villagers believe Satpal killed him. Meanwhile, Bhanu asks Hariya to kill Amita, while Tara says that Amita's child was stillborn. Hariya doesn't kill Amita and returns her to the dance house. One day, Satpal returned to the dance house and revealed that he did not kill Shashi. This was a conspiracy by Bhanu and Kedar. Tara reveals to Hariya that Madhu is actually Shashi's daughter. Bhanu finds the truth and shoots Hariya and Tara. Shankar intervenes and tries to save Hariya and Tara, as he takes them away in a van with Bhanu as his hostage. They are pursued by Jackie, Balram and their goons. Bhanu escapes from the van. Shankar brings them to the village, where Hariya reveals that Madhu is Shashi's daughter. Bhanu and his men attack the village. The villagers support Shankar and come out to fight. Shankar fights Bhanu and defeats him. Bhanu is forced to return the fraud documents of all villagers. Bhanu then gets a gun and shoots Amita, and is shot dead by Shankar. Shankar marries Madhu.

Peer Baba (Shammi Kapoor) sits in a town on the trade routes of Arabia and is the keeper of ancient tales. A rich tribal lord Ismail Baig from Bukhara comes to the Baba begging for a child, as he and his wife are childless. Baba blesses the couple but says that the resultant child will have to face severe storms in his life and could even die due to the intense storm of love. At the same time came Tulla (Pran) with his wife (Tanuja) from India, begging for their own bundle of love. Baba issues the same warning to Tulla and blesses the couple with a daughter. 20 years later, the boy and the girl have grown up. Tulla daughter is a pottery artist and sends a beautiful water jug to the Baba, via trader named Hasim, as a gift. The Baba asks Hashim to take the jug to Bukhara and give water to the first thirsty person he sees. Back in Bukhara the boy is a tribal prince named Izzat. Izzat wins the tribal sport of Buzkashi, against all the other warriors of the tribe. Hashim reaches Bukhara and gives the jug to Izzat who declares that he is thirsty. Drinking the water, Izzat has visions of a beautiful woman and now wants to go to India to meet her. Ismail knows that this is the test that Baba had foreseen for Izzat. But Ismail allows Izzat to go, as this is destiny and has to be faced. Shahzada Izzat Beg (Sunny Deol) comes to India with his caravan from Bukhara Uzbekistan and settles in a town called Gujra in Punjab. Salamat (Rakesh Bedi) is Izzat's friend, whom he had freed from slavery during the trip, by paying Salamat's master 1000 Dinars. On the way Izzat also fights the bandit leader Zarina (Zeenat Aman), when her gang attacks the caravan, for feeding water to their enemy. Zarina befriends Izzat when he declares that he will not fight a woman. The enemy Izzat saved was named Jabru, who says that he knows why Zarina became an outlaw. In Punjab, Izzat falls in love with Sohni (Poonam Dhillon), who keeps a shop of earthen pots with her father Tulla. Izzat Beg buys a pot from her with whatever money he had, and they are attracted to each other. Salamat also falls in love with a girl named Salamati, who is Noor's (Gulshan Grover) sister. Turns out Sohni was already engaged to Jabru, the man whom Izzat saved on the way to the town. Jabru's sister Malkani only knew that he had been abducted by bandit Zara, and didn't know that Jabru had been saved by Izzat. Malkani breaks the engagement with Tulla. Izzat requests Tulla to teach him the art of pottery, and since Izzat had bought Tulla's entire inventory, he was happy to oblige. Meanwhile Jabru returns to Malkani and reveals that Zara is actually Zarina. It seems that Zarina killed her husband due to Malkani and turned into a bandit. Jabru insists that he will only marry Sohni, but Malkani refuses to set foot in Tulla's house again. Malkani summons Tulla to her house. Malkani says that Sohni will not get a better groom than Jabru, but Tulla refuses to consider the match after being insulted by Malkani. In response, Malkani stops the supply of earthen clay to all potters in town. Only her land supplies the earthen clay. Izzat uses every opportunity to get close to Sohni, and even kisses her. While Noor is in love with Sohni and resents her relationship with Izzat. Noor approaches Sohni's mother and asks for her hand in marriage as he argues that the news of her engagement breaking will bring much disrespect to the family. Noor also says that he is from the same tribe as Sohni, and hence has the right to propose marriage. But Tulla hates Noor, as Noor was his student who opened his own pottery shop, and now wants to use Sohni's misfortune, to get his hands on Sohni herself. Noor accuses Tulla of selling his daughter to the rich Izzat. Tulla finds Sohni romancing Izzat and confronts her. Tulla says that it is a matter of honor for him and asks Sohni to stay away from Izzat. Noor complains to Zarina that a foreigner entered the village and bought his love with the might of money. Zarina has the foreigner abducted, only to find that it is Izzat. Noor challenges Izzat to a duel and is easily defeated. Izzat tells Zarina that Sohni loves him, but spares Noor's life as he knows that Noor also loves Sohni and that is not a crime. Zarina tells her own story to Izzat. She says that she loves a poor man named Rashid. She eloped with him, after her family refused to accept their love. But once she eloped, she found that Rashid was already in love with Malkani. Zarina stabs Rashid to death and turns into an outlaw. The potters beg Malkani to restart the supply for earthen clay. Malkani wants Tulla to marry Sohni to Jabru as her condition to restart the supply of clay. The potters try to convince Tulla, but he asks for more time to make a decision. Meanwhile, Sohni and Izzat continue to meet, which is seen by Noor. Izzat was staying in the village in the disguise of a cow herder. He had bribed the original cow herder named Mahiwal to give his clothes to him, and the original to leave the village. Noor knew this, and he poisons the buffaloes, while Izzat was romancing Sohni. The villagers find Izzat in the disguise of the cow herder and beat him up. The village Panchayat decide that Izzat poisoned the cattle to take revenge on the village when they refused to marry Sohni to him. He is sentenced to death by hunger. The Panchayat also decides that Sohni will be married to Jabru to resolve the issue with Malkani. After several days, with Izzat nearing death, Sohni agrees to marry Jabru to save Izzat's life. But now, Jabru finds Izzat on the streets with Salamat, and brings him home for treatment. When Izzat recovers, he realizes that Jabru is the guy engaged to Sohni now. Since Jabru is his friend, Izzat decides not to reveal the truth to Jabru. But Noor realizes the issue and reveals everything to Malkani. Noor says that this is Izzat's ploy since after the wedding both Izzat and Sohni will be living under Malkani's roof. Noor then goes to Zarina and says that Izzat's Sohni is being married forcefully to Jabru. On the day of the wedding, Noor attacks Izzat when he is alone and abducts him with his goons. Noor reveals to Izzat that he was the one who poisoned the cattle. He also says that Zarina will kill Malkani and Jabru at Tulla's house and this way Sohni will end up with Noor. Izzat defeats Noor and rushes back to the village to the wedding with Salamat. Due to a storm, their horse falls down, injuring Izzat. Zarina confronts Malkani at the wedding and says that the wedding is happening without the bride's consent. Jabru is shocked to find that Sohni loved Izzat, his best friend, and was only engaged to him so that the villagers could get clay from Malkani's land. Jabru divorces Sohni. Salamat reaches the wedding and reveals how Malkani sent Noor to kill Izzat. Sohni rushes to Izzat who is lying injured by the river. Sohni and Izzat enter the stormy river from opposite ends and meet in the middle and drown together in embrace.

While trying to win over his beloved's parents, a young man is accused of arson, and his father soon realizes insanity may be his only defense. Coming from a decent upper middle-class family, Vikram Saxena meets with gorgeous Seema Singh, and both fall in love. But their respective families have other plans for them. While Vikram is able to convince his advocate dad, Shyam Sunder, to change his mind, Seema is unable to do so, and her marriage is being planned with a U.S. resident. Things take a turn for the worst when the police arrest Vikram with arson, with evidence that he had burned down a property belonging to Seema's dad, Colonel Ram Mohan Singh. Due to this, Vikram's dad comes forward to defend him, and Seema will not have anything to do with him anymore. Shyam Sunder realizes that the only way he can save his son from being imprisoned is to have him certified as insane, but will have to live with the consequences for the rest of his life, as well as the the stigma this will place on his family for years to come. —rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com)
