Boy genius Michael Dean (Adkins) teams up with a super-talented chimpanzee and his caretaker (Modine) to take down an animal testing lab. In exchange the scientist gives the boy some pointers on the girl of his dreams. This amusing, darkly comic tale follows CIA agent Jack McCall and a chimpanzee that he attempts to liberate from a testing lab. Named Clemens, the chimp has been trained in martial arts combat, as part of a program designed to turn the creatures into fearsome fighting machines. Naturally this leads to plenty of slapstick moments between Modine and the chimp, especially when they seek refuge in the home of a boy and his mother as the owners of the lab hotfoot it after the escaped primate. —Anthony Pereyra {hypersonic91@yahoo.com} When former American football player and CIA-martial arts instructor Alec McCall finds out the dodgy firm Z.I.T. he's been giving martial arts training to chimpanzee Clemens for is going to abuse him (and other test animals), he steals him and disappears south, where they meet Michael Dean, an exceptionally intelligent schoolboy who just accepted tutoring the football jocks for the team uniform he hopes to impress girls with. Gratefull he and his ma took them in after a mate failed to get Clemens into a zoo there, McCall takes the fatherless kid under his wing. When Michaels ma helps Alec decipher the ZIT-files he grabbed on his way out and the firms goons send to retrieve the chimp track him down, a grim fight becomes inevitable. —KGF Vissers

A private detective's protected female witness is murdered, prompting him and the victim's boyfriend to investigate the crime that leads to a corrupt politician and a crooked football team owner. A medical-school dropout and a homemaker/mom try to make it as stand-up comedians. They become friends and help each other out at a New York City comedy club. Steven Gold is a flat-broke stand-up comedian who has recently dropped out of medical school. He and several others work regularly at the Gas Station, a New York City comedy club. The wages are lousy and everybody hopes for the big break. Lilah Krytsick is a homemaker with an ambition to be a stand-up comedian, but she doesn't seem to have the talent. Steven takes her under his wing and teaches her the art of comedy and humor. But when a TV station arranges a comedy evening at the club, Steve sees his opportunity for fame and stardom. Their friendship seems quickly forgotten and now it's every man and woman for him- or herself. —Mattias Pettersson <seaman@sbbs.se> Lilah Krytsick is a New Jersey homemaker and mother married to insurance salesman John Krytsick, who expects her to place these household roles as her top priority in life. Steven Gold has just been kicked out of medical school; he had only been admitted by having his doctor dad pull some strings. Although he never wanted to be a doctor, Steven doesn't want his father to know he is no longer in school. Lilah and Steven casually know each other with both being stand-up comics--secret lives to both John and Steven's father--performing for $15 a set at a New York City comedy club called The Gas Station. Lilah has always felt joy in making people laugh, although she strains in putting together a set that is meaningful to her and thus funny to the audience. Steven, arguably considered the best comic at the club, wants to make it big in the business. However, he sucks up most of the proverbial oxygen when at the club, which doesn't sit well with some of the other comics, especially the less secure ones who also want to make this business their life. While Lilah deals with trying to balance this secret life and her household duties while also trying to improve her stand-up skills and Steven strives to make a career of stand-up happen sooner than later in needing to eke out a life for himself, Lilah and Steven connect on an emotional level through comedy. The question then becomes what will happen to their friendship as they focus on their own priorities in their lives holistically, which is only complicated as network executives hold a contest at the club; the winner will be featured on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962). —Huggo
