The film follows a single day in the life of an LAPD cop, Jake Hoyt (Hawke), who is scheduled to be evaluated by Detective Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington), a highly decorated LAPD narcotics officer who could advance Jake's career. In Alonzo's car, the pair of officers observe teenage Mara Salvatrucha members dealing drugs in a park. Instead of arresting the buyers, Alonzo confiscates the drugs and tells Jake to take a hit from the marijuana. Jake initially refuses, but Alonzo puts a gun to his head and says Jake's failure to use drugs could get him killed by a street dealer. Jake relents and smokes the marijuana, but shortly thereafter, Alonzo tells him the marijuana was laced with PCP. While driving, Jake notices a female high school student being sexually assaulted by two men in an alley. Jake jumps out to help her and subdues the attackers, but Alonzo refuses to report the incident. He tells the girl to leave, telling Jake that the girl's gang member (Sureno) cousin will seek the attackers out for revenge. Jake discovers the girl's wallet on the ground and takes it. Jake objects to Alonzo's use of vigilante "street justice," but Alonzo characterizes Jake as naive. Alonzo and Jake then go to the home of a drug dealer named the Sandman and serve a phony search warrant, which is actually a cover for Alonzo to steal drug money. Jake again objects to Alonzo's actions, especially since it could have gotten them killed. The duo then arrive at Baldwin Village to visit Alonzo's Salvadoran girlfriend Sara (Eva Mendes) and their young son. Afterward, Alonzo meets with a group of high-ranking police officials dubbed the "Three Wise Men" (Tom Berenger, Harris Yulin and Raymond J. Barry). They tell Alonzo that they know he owes money to the Russian Mafia and suggest that he leave town. But Alonzo insists he can control the situation and gets permission from the Wise Men to "cash in on an account" with the caveat that he avoids a scandal. Alonzo later tells Jake that he had to give Sandman's money to the Three Wise Men to obtain an arrest warrant. Alonzo takes Jake and several other narcotic officers to the home of Roger (Scott Glenn), a drug dealer and former police officer the two visited earlier. Using the warrant, they seize several million dollars from underneath the floor of Roger's kitchen, but Jake refuses to take his share of the cash -- much to the suspicion of the other cops. Alonzo then shoots Roger and arranges the scene to appear like a justified shooting. Jake refuses to lie, and after being threatened seizes Alonzo's gun. A Mexican standoff ensues, with Jake threatening to shoot Alonzo while the other officers threaten to shoot Jake. Alonzo then reveals that the LAPD will run a blood test on Jake following the shooting, thus detecting the PCP he had smoked earlier. Alonzo offers to have the test results falsified in exchange for Jake's cooperation. Jake reluctantly agrees, and Alonzo again urges Jake to drop his naive view of police work. Alonzo then drives Jake to the home of a Mexican gangster named "Smiley" (Cliff Curtis), allegedly to run an errand. Alonzo gives Smiley a package containing a large stack of money, which Smiley asks his sister to count while he plays poker with two other gang members. Jake is persuaded to join the game and engages in tense conversation with the three men. After Smiley's sister confirms to him that the count is correct, Smiley receives a message on his phone. Smiley then reveals to Jake that Alonzo has abandoned him, and explains Alonzo's situation: by midnight, Alonzo must pay $1 million to the Russian mob for killing one of their couriers in Las Vegas or be killed himself. Alonzo has paid Smiley to kill Jake. Jake tries to escape but is overpowered and dragged into the bathroom to be executed. The men search his pockets, finding the wallet he had picked up earlier from the girl he rescued, who is Smiley's cousin. Smiley calls the girl, who confirms that Jake defended her against the attackers. In gratitude for protecting his cousin, Smiley lets Jake go, and asks for no hard feelings because the planned execution was "just business". Jake returns to Sara's apartment looking for Alonzo. He attempts to arrest Alonzo, but Alonzo resists and they fight. Jake eventually subdues him, after which the local gang members and residents begin congregating to watch. Alonzo tries to get the crowd on his side by offering a reward to whoever kills Jake, but they have grown tired of Alonzo's arrogance and allow Jake to walk away with the money. In his escape to LAX, Alonzo is surrounded by Russian hit-men who kill him. The final scene has Jake pulling into his driveway and going home to his wife, Lisa (Charlotte Ayanna), and daughter, while a radio broadcast describes Alonzo's death as occurring honorably while "serving a high-risk warrant near LAX."

Rembrandt Macy (Tom Berenger) is a maverick cop assigned to a case where the primary evidence is a woman's hand found in a pond. Investigators identify the dead, and Macy is lead into a young woman's past. Macy's primary path to understanding the victim is through one of her roommates, Nikki. Through Nikki and others, Macy learns of the victim's shady contacts at City Hall, the involvement of a gang of Asian drug runners, and the sordid affairs of one of the city's bigwigs. His team helps him. After a botched mission in Cuba, professional mercenary Shale and his crew Joey Six, Hollan, Rem, and Wellman head home to Miami, Florida, where Shale is reunited with his fiance Jane Hetzko, who is a history teacher at Columbus High School in Miami. Some of Jane's students happen to be members of a street gang known as the "Kings of Destruction" (KOD), led by Juan Lacas, who has been terrorizing Jane. After Jane's kneecap is broken by a big seminole named Bull, she tells Shale that she believes Lacas ordered the attack, so Shale goes undercover as Jane's substitute, and initially, Jane has no idea that Shale is doing this. At the school, Shale meets principal Claude Rolle, librarian Hannah Dillon, and english and drama teacher Darrell Sherman. It turns out that Lacas is one of Jane's students. As Shale investigates the attack on Jane, he discovers that drugs are being circulated into the school. Shale even investigates local drug kingpin Johnny Glades, who may or may not have someone inside the school distributing the drugs for him. On the next morning, Shale has a meeting with the rogue lawyer Matt Wolfson that offers a job to protect a shipment of drugs but Shale declines the offer. When he returns to Jane's apartment, he learns that she is jogging at the beach. He walks to meet her and save Jane from the attack of the strong punk Bull that breaks her kneecap and flees. She asks him to invite a substitute to replace her and Shale adopts the alias James Smith to replace Jane. Soon he learns that Lacas and Rolle are associated to the drug lord Johnny Glades and using the school to store and distribute the drug in Miami. Carly Norris (Sharon Stone), a beautiful book editor and divorcee in her mid-30s, moves into the exclusive New York City sliver building "113". A sliver building is a tall building constructed on a lot with a narrow frontage, more specifically in New York City. Evelyn McEvoy (Nina Foch) is the real estate agent for the apartment building. Carly loved the view and the fact that the apartment is on a high floor. Carly was married to her ex-husband for 7 years and feels that she wasted that time of her life and was too late to realize that she shared nothing in common with the man she was spending her life with. Judy (Colleen Camp) is Carly's colleague at the office. Alex Parsons (Martin Landau) is Carly's boss and she is expecting a raise at work. Carly meets other tenants including Zeke (William Baldwin), a video game designer, Jack (Tom Berenger) a novelist, Vida (Polly Walker) a fashion model who moonlights as a call girl, and Gus (Keene Curtis) a professor of Videography at New York University. They tell Carly that she bears a striking resemblance to Naomi Singer (Allison Mackie), the previous tenant of her apartment who fell to her death from her balcony. Gus travels a lot to Japan to look over the latest video technology that he can later teach in his class. Alex introduces Jack to Carly at work. Jack had written 2 hit novels a few years ago and nothing ever since. Alex wanted Carly to convince Jack to write again. Carly admits that she has never read Jack's novels before in her life. Jack becomes slightly obsessive with Carly and says that she will read his novels as she has good taste. It is shown in a flashback that Naomi was thrown off the balcony of her apartment by a mysterious man in a hoodie who had access to Naomi's place. Zeke is very friendly to Carly and even helps her move into the building. He somehow is present every time Carly is in the common areas of the building. Unknown to Carly her apartment, even her bathroom was bugged with secret cameras that were keeping an eye on her. The mysterious person had bugged every apartment in the building with hidden cameras and was keeping an eye on everybody at the same time. The person sees Carly in the bathroom, in her tub, masturbating. Jack badgers Carly to read his novels after he sends her a copy of his 2 bestsellers. Carly stands up to Jack and indicates that she does not like the intrusion into her private life, but Jack is very persistent. Someone sends Carly a telescope as a gift but kept their identity hidden. Through the telescope Carly sees Vida trying to seduce Jack on the streets. She only leaves after Jack gives her some money from his wallet. After running into Zeke numerous times, Carly invites him to her housewarming party. Jack also barges in without an invitation. Carly joins the gym with Zeke. One time she gets stuck in the laundromat of the building in the basement, when the power fails, and gets really scared after hearing strange noises. Zeke arrives there shortly afterwards to rescue her. Carly visits Zeke at his apartment after a gym session, where Zeke got really flirty with her and touched her behind. Soon afterwards, Carly and Zeke begin a sexual relationship. Their sex sessions are also recorded by the mysterious person with the hidden cameras. Meanwhile, Jack starts stalking Carly and warning her about Zeke who he says is "sick". He also points out that Zeke's deceased mother, a soap opera actress named Thea Manning, bears a resemblance to Carly. Jack says that Zeke was seeing Naomi and that Naomi was seeing a shrink. Carly retorts that Jack is unable to write anymore and is making up these stories about Zeke and Naomi to hide the fact that he cannot write. Carly continues to see Zeke and gets romantically involved with him. Zeke engages Carly in increasingly erotic behavior including exposing her undergarments to him at a restaurant while they were having a meal in the dining room. Zeke tells Carly that he never knew Naomi and that she came onto him once. Zeke instead tells Carly that it was Jack who had an affair with Naomi. Carly calls Jack and says that it was Vida who told her that Jack had an affair with Naomi. Jack immediately recognizes that Vida never said any such thing and that it was Zeke who told Carly about the affair. As Jack's behavior becomes more erratic, Gus dies in the shower under suspicious circumstances and Vida is murdered, with police suspicion falling on Jack for her death after Carly discovers him in the stairwell with her corpse. Carly is in touch with Lieutenant Victoria Hendrix (C. C. H. Pounder). Zeke reveals to Carly that he is the owner of 113, which he bought with his inheritance from his wealthy father. As owner of 113, Zeke has installed a comprehensive video surveillance system throughout the building, allowing him to spy on all of the tenants from his own secret surveillance room. It is revealed that Zeke is the mysterious person spying on everybody in the building. Carly realizes that Zeke has been spying on her through his hidden cameras. Carly is livid, but is intrigued by the system and starts playing with it herself as she looks into the private lives of all the other people in the building. Jack is charged with the murder of Vida but is released on bail and returns to the building. Through deduction and eventually one of Zeke's secret recordings, Carly learns that Jack killed Naomi in a crime of passion. Jack was jealous of Zeke, who had sexual relations with both Naomi and Vida. Jack attacks Carly in her own apartment, and she accidentally shoots him dead. Angry at Zeke for withholding evidence in Naomi's murder, and jealous of his liaisons with Naomi and Vida, Carly destroys Zeke's surveillance room, tells him to "get a life", then leaves.

Mike is called in to investigate a homicide. Claire Gregory, a beautiful and wealthy socialite, witnessed a murder committed by notorious gangster Joey Venza. Since her life is in danger, she must be guarded at her penthouse home. Mike draws the night shift and is not happy about it. Claire's snobbish boyfriend treats him like dirt and he has to sit outside in the foyer all night. One night Claire comes out all dressed up and says she is going to a reception. Mike must accompany her and Claire says his tie isn't right. They stop at a shop to buy a new one, which is quite expensive but Claire puts it on her account. Despite himself, Mike finds himself developing feelings for her. He also begins to unfavorably compare her to Ellie. It isn't long before he is spending the night with her when he is supposed to be guarding her. Ellie and Mike go to dinner and he criticizes her for not acting like a lady. Then he confesses his affair with Claire, leaving Ellie heartbroken. He moves in with a fellow cop who is divorced. Joey Venza finds a way to get into the building. One of the tenants goes jogging every day at dusk and Joey, dressed in similar clothing, knifes him and takes his place. Mike's replacement shows up and Venza kills him. Mike feels terrible because the cop was his good friend. He is placed on suspension and ordered to stay away from Claire until the case is closed. All his cop friends turn against him. When he sees Tommy for visitation, his son will barely speak to him. There is one more social function that Claire must attend; then she is going away. But Venza is still out there. He breaks into Ellie's home and holds her hostage. Mike and Claire rush over and there is a shootout. Ellie, the former cop, kills Venza. Mike now realizes what a mistake he's made and that he still loves Ellie. Claire watches them embrace before climbing back into her car and driving away.

The Wild West goes wacko when the Greatest Fast-Drawin', Fancy-Dressin', Silver-Spurred, Geetar Playin', Singing Cowboy movie matinee idol Rex O'Herlihan hits the saddle in this cockeyed, affectionate send-up of the '40s B-movie Western. While the audience watches a black and white horse opera, a narrator's voice wonders what such a movie would be like today. Classic Western stereotypes and clichés get turned on their ear when our fearless hero, fully dressed in white and atop his dancing horse Wildflower, rides into the tackiest town west of the Pecos to do good deeds and defy desperados. Written and directed by Hugh Wilson, who was responsible for the hilarious Police Academy (1984), Rustlers' Rhapsody stars Andy Griffith and Marilu Henner. —Anonymous An amusing spoof of the good 'ole westerns back in the halcyon days when all the cliches were held up as icons, this parody by Hugh Wilson works best for savvy audiences. Rex O'Herlihan (Tom Berenger) is a singing cowboy with a wardrobe straight out of the Hollywood westerns of the '40s - he worships his horse, and has a trusty sidekick too. Every town he wanders into has a sheriff on the dole, a shady cattle rancher, a prostitute with a heart of gold, an innocent young damsel, a town drunk, and the standard bad guys in black hats and long coats (Spaghetti-western style) who brutalize the poor sheep ranchers. After setting things straight in each identical town as he goes, Rex is beginning to feel like a re-run junky when he saunters into a town that is slightly different - and the parodies continue. —Anonymous

A group of former college housemates come together when one of their friends commits suicide and spend a weekend at a beautiful seaside home.

Jamie Shannon is a soldier of fortune, a mercenary who will stage a coup or a revolution for the right price. In 1980, Mercenaries Jamie Shannon (Christopher Walken), Drew (Tom Berenger), Derek (Paul Freeman), Michel (Jean-Francois Stevenin), Terry (Ed O'Neill) and injured Richard (Harlan Cary Poe) make a hasty exit from a war-torn Central American country by forcing their way onto a government civilian DC-3 airplane. When a Central American officer demands Richard's body to be removed to make room for others one of the mercenaries shows he is still able to safely grasp the spoon of a hand grenade and Drew insists his friend "goes home". The flight barely manages to take off from a make-shift runway before the rebels completely overrun the airport and kill everything and everybody that remained. Shannon lives a lonely life and doesn't have any friends. He lives alone in his apartment. After Shannon returns home to another night of loneliness, he is approached by a mysterious stranger who calls himself Andean. Endean (Hugh Millais) is a Briton who is interested in "certain resources" of a small African nation named Zangaro. Endean says that the investors he represents are willing to put up several hundred million dollars to extract the resources from Zangaro. Before money can be invested, they need to know much more about the stability of the regime. Endean pays Shannon $15,000 to go on a reconnaissance mission in Zangaro which is run by a paranoid and brutal dictator named General Kimba. Shannon arrives in Zangaro's capital of ClarenceTown, with a cover story of being an Ornithologist for a popular nature magazine back in the states. At the airport itself, a corrupt customs official takes half of everything Shannon has, like whiskey, cigarettes, porn and hard currency, before letting him into the country. He is given a lift into town by a catholic priest. Armed militia roam the streets, stopping vehicles, looking for an opportunity to make a quick bribe to avoid harassment. Shannon meets a British documentary filmmaker named Alan North (Colin Blakely) who tells him Zangaro's history and scouts out the defenses of the military garrison. North says that after independence there were 3 candidates for the President, namely Kima, Colonel Bobi and Dr Okoye. Okoye wanted to maintain links with the mother country. But the freedom fighters feared Neo-colonialism and thus Kimba got elected. A week later, he threw Okoye into prison and pushed Bobi into exile. Shannon activities, especially a suspected dalliance with a woman who turns out to be one of Kimba's mistresses, arouse the suspicions of Zangaro's police, and he is arrested, severely beaten and thrown in jail. His multiple wounds are treated by Dr. Okoye (Winston Ntshona), a physician who was formerly a moderate political leader and the only local politician of whom North approved but who was imprisoned by General Kimba four years ago. North agitates for his release and Shannon is deported after two days of torture. His physician tells him that all the damage he has sustained has taken years off his lifespan. After Shannon tells Endean that there is no chance of an internal coup Endean offers Shannon $100,000 to overthrow Kimba by invading Zangaro with a mercenary army. Endean intends to install a puppet government led by Colonel Bobi (George Harris), Kimba's brutal and greedy former ally. This would allow Endean to exploit the country's newly discovered platinum resources as Colonel Bobi has already signed away the mineral rights. Shannon refuses the offer and decides to leave his mercenary life behind. Shannon meets his estranged wife and proposes that they start a new life in Colorado or Montana. She turns him down noting that she does not think that he has changed. Shannon then accepts Endean's offer to organize an attack on Zangaro with the condition that he will have complete control of the operation. After Endean gives Shannon $1 million for expenses Shannon contacts his mercenary cohorts from Central America and three of them join him but one does not. They meet up at Liverpool Street Station to plan the coup and when all the options have been decided Michel proposes a toast followed by Shannon's reciting his motto "Everyone Comes Home". The group illegally procures Uzi sub-machine guns, ammunition, rocket launchers, mines and other weapons from arms dealers. He hires a small freighter and crew to transport the team to the coast of Zangaro and purchases a variety of other equipment that will be used in the attack such as Zodiac-style motorboats. By chance he encounters North who was expelled from Zangaro shortly after Shannon. North believes Shannon is a CIA agent heading back to Zangaro and tries to tail him. Shannon asks Drew to scare North away without hurting him but instead North is killed by someone who had been hired by Endean to follow Shannon and his crew. A furious Shannon kills him in turn and leaves his body at Endean's house during a dinner party held for Colonel Bobi. At sea the team is joined by a group of mercenary soldiers trained by a former mercenary colleague, Jinja, who will act as infantry. Once ashore in a night attack, the mercenaries and their troops use their array of weapons to attack the military garrison where Kimba lives. Drew bursts into a shack in the barracks' courtyard and finds only a young woman with a baby. When he turns to leave without harming them, she shoots him in the back with a pistol. After the mercenaries storm the burning, bullet-scarred ruins of the garrison, Shannon blasts his way into Kimba's mansion. There he finds the dictator stuffing packs of bills into a briefcase. When a whimpering Kimba offers Shannon some of the money to spare his life, Shannon kills him. The following morning, Endean arrives by helicopter with Colonel Bobi and they enter the presidential residence, where they find Shannon and Dr. Okoye awaiting their overdue arrival.
