The movie begins with a man (William) is standing on the ledge of a bridge trying to gain the courage to jump. A man appears behind him and startles him and offers help if William wants it. William tells him to back off, he doesn't need help, the stranger gives William a card as his attempts to help William jump appear to fail. William closes his eyes and jumps, but he crashes through the roof of a boat and lands in the middle of a party alive. William goes back to work as a life guard ( he wants to be a writer) and talks with his boss. Things don't go well, already frustrated about his future, William is dismissed from his job and then heads home. He comes upon a stack of mail inside his door, to his dismay, they are rejections from his submissions. He heads to the bathroom and looks for pills. He then turns on the gas oven and sticks his head in it. Once again, he has failed, the gas has been shut off due to an unpaid bill. William pulls out the card that the stranger on the bridge game him, it reads Leslie O'Neal Assassin , he calls the number. William meets the stranger from the bridge (Mr. O'Neal) in a coffee shop, William tells him he is not what he expected based on his age. Leslie ensures William that he is the angel of death and has killed many people. William explains the many way and times he has tried to kill himself all ending in failure. The last incident ending in being hit by an ambulance, William suggests that he may be immortal. Leslie gives William a book with options of ways people die to choose from. Because William only has 2 thousand dollars, Leslie suggests a bullet from a distance, instant death, they agree and sign a contract. O'Neal goes to his office to register his contract and also asks for a gun, he looks at the score board for hired killers and he is very low on the list, however he notices that one killer has overflowed the chart with his kills. He heads home to have dinner with his wife and they sit down to watch some tv. Meanwhile, William is at home writing his suicide note, satisfied, he kicks back with a smoke. Back at O'Neal's house he and his wife argue about bills and such. Later on William calls O'Neal to tell him the money has been transferred, but O'Neal is in the middle of a job, the call is short and Oneal goes about his business. William has an idea for a book about an assassin, namely his own hired help. O'Neal is shown doing his job around the city. Williams phone rings, it's a woman who wants to talk to him about his book. They set up a meeting for lunch, she tells him not to kill himself before then. Williams goes to see O'Neal to postpone their deal because of the meeting. Oneal reminds him that the have a contract and he must follow through on it. William meets up with Ellie who called him earlier about his book, a rude man on the phone berating someone sits down with them, he is the boss and takes over the conversation. He suggests what he wants to do to twist Williams story about trying to kill himself but he doesn't agree with the suggestions. O'Neal takes aim at William from a window, but as he shoots, William ducks and the rude boss is killed instead, O'Neal takes a second shot again missing William and hitting a waiter. O'Neal is back home with his wife telling her he had a bad day, she suggests that it could have been worse because someone could have been killed. William is at home writing when he hears a knock on the door, it's Ellie. She and William talk about what happened earlier during their meeting and where to go from here. Knowing that he has hired someone to kill him, William struggles but finally breaks and tells Ellie that the bullet was meant for him and not her boss. Ellie tells William that he needs to end the contract so he calls O'Neal. The phone that is ringing is in his apartment and he finds O'Neal in another room, they argue and William is almost killed. William and Ellie run down an alley and steal a parking cops scooter, O'Neal kills the cop, stuffs him in a trash can but is abducted by men putting a bag over his head, O'Neal is taken to his boss where he is told he fucked up, they can't have that as they are professionals. He goes on a rant about Micheal J Fox and then tells him that he is done, washed up, through, out of the game. He is told he has broken the rules because someone else had a contract on his accidental killing. O'Neal tries in vain to take credit for that contract, but is informed that he has been re-assigned. O'Neal is offered a clock as a parting gift but refuses to take it. His boss tells his henchmen that O'Neal has become loose end and should be shot. William and Ellie are at her house that her parents left her when they died in a car crash, she also says that she was dead for about 10 seconds. William comes back with his own story about how his parents were crushed by a piano and that as he looked at his dad hoping for some last words, he just died instead. Ellie suggests that they just kill themselves and get it over with rather than waiting for Williams hitman. They take two knives, Ellie counts to 3 but they drop the knives and start making out instead. O'Neal is back home in bed with his wife complaining about being let go / retired and says he isn't ready, His wife says to stick with his guts and stay in the game. William and Ellie chat about how he decided which way he wanted to be killed and bicker a bit about which way would have been the most interesting. O'Neal and his wife are going about their day, she leaves as he reads the paper, outside a henchman sits in a car. Once the wife is gone, he heads inside the house, O'Neal says goodbye to his birds and leaves. The Henchman finds pictures and such on the table but no sign of O'Neal. William and Ellie head to cliffs overlooking the ocean and then head through some woods. They arrive back at Ellies home only to find O'Neal ready to fulfill his contract. His phone keeps ringing as he attempts to shoot William, it's his wife calling about the house being broken into. The henchman has killed his birds and he is upset. As he goes to shoot William, the henchman shoots O'Neal. He then hands William a gun and tells him to shoot himself. Saying that they will both be considered suicide, Ellie and William explain that he needs the other gun to do it. William puts the gun in his mouth but they henchman is then pummeled to death by O'Neal who has survived the shot to the head. O'Neal tells William he needs to finish the job, Ellie picks up a gun a shoots off a round to let him know she is serious. William tells O'Neal that he had nothing to live for until he met Ellie, and now he doesn't want to die. Ellie comes up with a plan by taking out their own contract. After some time they take O'Neal's car to a bridge where they dump Ellie's boss into the river. O'Neal makes it home to his wife and finds that she has won a first place ribbon. Later on she answers the door, it is O'Neal's boss and he has the clock he had offered earlier. He asks his wife to leave so they can discuss business. O'Neal is told that one of his contracts are still alive, he pushes the contract that William and him had drawn up, guns are drawn under the table. Suddenly O'Neal's wife enters with her award winning pillow. She goes on and on about how some birds mate forever and with both guns still pointed at each other, they wonder what to do. O'Neal's wife picks up the clock and hands it to O'Neal, this means he has accepted retirement and then the boss leaves the house. William and Ellie are walking through a park, a ball is kicked into the street and William jumps out to push the child out of the way, William is hit and lays in the street as people clap for his heroics. Ellie comforts him as an ambulance arrives.

In an extremely rare decision, the Catholic Church officially recognized the demonic possession of the 19 year-old college freshman. Told in flashbacks, The Exorcism of Emily Rose chronicles the haunting trial of the priest accused of negligence resulting in the death of the young girl who is believed to be possessed and the lawyer who takes on the task of defending him. Lawyer Erin Bruner (Laura Linney) takes on the church and the state when she fights in defense of a priest, Father Richard Moore (Tom Wilkinson) who performed an exorcism on a young woman, Emily Rose (Jennifer Carpenter). Bruner must battle the state lawyer as well as her own loneliness, as she realizes that her career so far has not fulfilled her. She takes the case, albeit reluctantly, because she believes it will elevate her to senior partner at her law firm. The priest agrees to let her defend him only if he is allowed to tell Emily's story. The trial begins with the calling of several medical experts by the prosecutor, Ethan Thomas (Campbell Scott). One expert (Kenneth Welsh) testifies that Emily was suffering from both epilepsy and psychosis. The defense contests that she may have actually been possessed, though Bruner is careful never to say that in so many words initially. Indeed Bruner explains that Emily was suffering from something that neither medicine nor psychology could explain, and that Father Moore as well as her family realized this and tried to help in another way. Several flashbacks show how this began. Alone in her dorm room one night, at 3:00 AM, she smells a strange burning smell from the hallway. When she checks on it, she sees the door open and shut by itself several times. When she goes back to her room, she sees a jar of pencils and pens move by itself. Additionally, her covers roll themselves down, and a great weight seems to press down on her, a force which also proceeds to choke her and seemingly to possess her momentarily. Through these episodes she wonders if they are really happening or if it is just a hallucination she is experiencing. She suffers more "visions", is hospitalized, and diagnosed with epilepsy. She is given anti-seizure medications which she claims do not work. Her visions continue, as do her severe bodily contortions. She leaves school and returns to live with her parents. She and her parents become convinced she is not epileptic or mentally ill but is possessed by demons. They ask for their local parish priest to be called in to perform an exorcism, and the Church agrees. The prosecution counters that all this could be explained by a combination of epilepsy (the contortions) and psychosis (the visions). Meanwhile, Bruner begins to experience strange occurrences in her apartment at 3:00 AM, including strange smells and sounds. Father Moore warns her that she may be targeted by demons for possibly exposing them. Later in the film Father Moore explains that 3:00 AM is the "witching hour" which evil spirits use to mock the Holy Trinity. Significantly, it is the opposite of 3:00 PM, traditionally taken to be the hour at which Jesus died. Seeing that the prosecution is putting up a seemingly solid medical case, Bruner decides to try to show that Emily may have actually been possessed. She calls in an anthropologist, Dr. Sadira Adani (Shohreh Aghdashloo), to testify about various cultures' beliefs about spiritual possession. Graham Cartwright (Duncan Fraser), a medical doctor present during the exorcism, comes forward to reveal an audio tape made during the rite. The priest is then called to the stand to testify. The tape is played and the movie then flashes back to the exorcism. It is performed on Halloween night because Father Moore believes it might be easier to draw out the demons on that night. The priest, Emily's boyfriend Jason (Joshua Close), and her father (Andrew Wheeler) are in the room. Emily is tied to the bed. The priest uses holy water and various words from the Rituale Romanum. She speaks in tongues, including Latin, German, Ancient Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic. Several of the family's pet cats run into the room, jumping on the priest and knocking him down. Emily breaks her ties and jumps out the window, running into the barn. They follow her. Inside the barn, they are subjected to more supernatural phenomena such as unnatural gusts of wind and demonic screams and voices. The demon inside Emily refuses to name itself after repeated demands from the presiding Father but finally reveals contemptuously that there are not one but six demons. They go on to identify themselves in dramatic fashion, naming themselves one after another in dual voices from Emily. They identify themselves as the demons that possessed Cain, Nero, and Judas Iscariot and one of the Legion. Beyond that two demons name themselves directly as Belial, and "Lucifer, the devil in the flesh." The film returns to the courtroom. The priest says that after this, Emily refused another exorcism but also refused to take her anti-psychotic medication, having accepted her fate. She died a few weeks later. The prosecutor contends that her speaking in tongues can be explained by her having gone through Catholic Catechism, in which she could have learned the ancient languages, and that she had studied German in high school. The priest admits that it might be possible that she could have learned these languages in school. Bruner then wants to call the doctor as a witness, but he does not show up. She walks outside and sees him on the street. He says he can no longer testify, but he does believe in demons. Before he can explain he is hit by a car and killed. Later that night Bruner's boss tells her she has ruined the whole trial and that if she recalls the priest to the stand she will be fired. Nevertheless, Bruner calls the priest back to the stand the next day. He reads a letter that Emily wrote him before she died. In the letter Emily describes another vision she had, the morning after the exorcism. She walks out of the house and sees the Virgin Mary, who tells her that although the demons will not leave her, she can leave her body and end her suffering. However, the apparition goes on to say, if she returns to her body she will help to prove to the world that God and the Devil are real. She chooses to return. She concludes the letter by saying "People say that God is dead, but how can they think that if I show them the Devil?" She then receives stigmata, which the priest believes is a sign of God's love for her, but the prosecution counters that she could have received the stigmata wounds from a barbed wire fence on her property. Father Moore is ultimately found guilty; however, on a recommendation from the jury, the judge agrees to a sentence of time served. (In modern American legal practice, juries are only allowed to answer questions specifically directed to them, though sometimes they are asked separately to sentence defendants. The jury's recommendation in this fictional case does not follow American practice.) Bruner is offered a partnership at her firm for saving Father Moore from extended jail time, but she refuses and in fact quits. She goes with Father Moore to Emily's grave, where he has put a quote (which she recited to him the day before she died) from the second chapter twelfth verse of Philippians on her grave: "work out your own salvation with fear and trembling".

Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson), a veteran of the 1754-1760 French and Indian War, is a widower raising his seven children (five sons and two daughters) on his farm in 1778 South Carolina. He manages his land with free servants and employs in carpentry, particularly fashioning rocking chairs, though he has little success with it. Revolutionary War has been waged in other colonies for some time, though Benjamin does not share his enthusiasm for war. In 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, Benjamin Martin was called to Charlestown to vote in the South Carolina General Assembly on a levy supporting the Continental Army. Benjamin abstains, fearing war against Great Britain and not wanting to force others to fight when he himself would not. While there, it is voted that South Carolina join the war against the British despite Benjamin's advice against it. Still, the vote passes, and Benjamin's oldest son, Gabriel (Heath Ledger), joins the Continental Army against his father's wishes. Colonel Harry Burwell (Chris Cooper), a friend and ally of Benjamin's, promises to watch out for him. The war wages on for two more years, and Gabriel writes letters to his family throughout, expressing the horrors of war he's witnessed. At home, Thomas is found by Benjamin, trying on a red coat stored away in his father's war chest, and expresses his desire to join the army. Though Benjamin refuses to let him join, he relents that Thomas may enlist when he's seventeen in two years. Four years later, in 1780, Charlestown falls to the British Army, and a wounded Gabriel returns home carrying rebel dispatches. The Martins care for wounded British and American soldiers. The porch is used as a makeshift ward, and Benjamin receives praise from a British lieutenant (Grahame Wood). British dragoons arrive, led by Colonel William Tavington (Jason Isaacs). Tavington is given the discovered dispatches and orders the identity of the carrier. Gabriel turns himself in, hoping to spare his family any punishment, but Tavington orders the British lieutenant that the wounded Continental troops be killed and the house burned down for having harbored the enemy. Tavington press gangs the Martins' African-American former slaves into the army and arrests Gabriel as a spy. Gabriel's brother Thomas (Gregory Smith) tries to free him, but Tavington kills Thomas, then orders the Martins' house burned and all the wounded Americans executed. Gabriel is led away in a separate convoy, and the home servants, including housekeeper Abigail (Beatrice Bush) are forced into British service. After the British leave, Benjamin goes into the burning house and grabs his collection of muskets and ammo from his war chest, along with a tomahawk. He returns to his remaining children and instructs his daughters, Margaret (Mika Boorem) and Susan (Skye McCole Bartusiak) , and his youngest son William (Logan Lerman), to hide in the fields before making their way to their aunt's house come nightfall. He then gives rifles to his older sons, Nathan (Trevor Morgan) and Samuel (Bryan Chafin), and tells them to come with him. Benjamin and two of his older sons ambush the British convoy transporting Gabriel. Benjamin slaughters all but one of the soldiers in front of his children. Benjamin shows ferocious brutality when he takes his tomahawk vengefully to one of the British privates. Gabriel is freed, and they reunite with the rest of the family at Charlotte Shelton's (Joely Richardson) plantation, the sister of Benjamin's late wife. A solitary survivor of the convoy attack is brought to Tavington. The man gives his testimony and explains that it seemed that just one man was responsible for the attack, proclaiming him as a 'ghost' of some kind. Gabriel rejoins the Continentals, and Benjamin soon follows, leaving the younger children in the care of his sister-in-law, Charlotte. Benjamin meets his former commanding officer, Colonel Harry Burwell, who appoints him as colonel to raise a militia unit and places Gabriel under his father's command. Benjamin and Gabriel split up. Gabriel travels to a quaint town and is reunited with a childhood flame, Anne Howard (Lisa Brenner). Before leaving, he asks permission of Anne's father, Peter Howard (Joey D. Vieira), to write to her. Benjamin is tasked with weakening Lord Cornwallis's (Tom Wilkinson) regiments by guerrilla warfare to keep him at bay in the south before French navy reinforcements arrive. French Major Jean Villeneuve (Tchéky Karyo) helps train the militia and promises more French aid. Among the enlistees is John Billings (Leon Rippy), an old friend of Ben's whose young son shares his contempt for 'redcoats.' John jokes with Ben, saying that rumors have spread of a tomahawk-wielding ghost wreaking havoc on British soldiers. Gabriel asks his father why Villeneuve and other militia often mention Fort Wilderness, and Benjamin tells him that while fighting in the British Army, Benjamin and his men discovered atrocities against British colonists by French soldiers in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Enraged, they caught up with the retreating French at Fort Wilderness and killed all but two of them. The survivors had to present the severed heads of their comrades to the Cherokee, which convinced the tribe to betray the French. Though regarded as a hero, Benjamin never forgave himself. Benjamin's militia ambushes many British patrols and supplies caravans, including some of Cornwallis's personal effects (including a personal diary) and his two Great Danes, and burns bridges and ferries that Cornwallis needs. As Cornwallis attends a lavish party, a supply ship in the bay outside his plantation explodes in a brilliant display while Benjamin and his men row away disguised as redcoats, having stolen all the luxuries on board. Benjamin and Gabriel visit Anne's hometown, where Gabriel calls on her and spends the night, sewn by Anne's mother (Mary Jo Deschanel) into a traditional bundling bag, meant to allow courtship but deter intimacy. Benjamin and his men set up a roadblock and prepare to ambush an approaching supply wagon train. He calls out his militia hiding in the fields to intimidate the British soldiers from retaliating, but the wagon covers are pulled back, and more soldiers emerge. When Benjamin notices Tavington's cavalry approaching, he fires at the convoy and orders his men to retreat. Benjamin and Gabriel barely escape into the forest as the rest of the surviving militia are either killed or captured upon surrender. The captured militia are to be hanged for treason, and Benjamin comes up with a plan. He requests parlay to meet with Cornwallis at the fort where the militia is being held and rides out with his Great Danes. Benjamin pretends that even he has some of Cornwallis' men under his custody, their red uniforms barely visible on a distant hill, and offers a straight swap. Cornwallis agrees, and Benjamin's men walk out. But when Cornwallis' forces go to collect their men, they turn out to be scarecrows. After Benjamin uses a dishonorable and embarrassing ploy to free his captured men, Cornwallis allows Tavington to do everything possible to arrest him. With the aid of Wilkins (Adam Baldwin), a local Loyalist, Tavington has several militiamen's homes burned and their families executed. Benjamin's family flees Charlotte's plantation to live in a Gullah settlement with formerly enslaved residents. There, Gabriel marries his betrothed, Anne. Benjamin gives Anne his late wife's necklace, which has a talisman of Polaris, the north star. He explains that the star is a symbol of unwavering strength and serves as a constant guide. Benjamin begins to bond with Charlotte, having grown feelings for her, and, when he and Gabriel prepare to leave, shares a tender moment with his youngest child, Susan, who speaks to him for the first time since her mother's death. Anne and her family return to their hometown after the wedding, while Gabriel moves on with his father and the rest of the militia. Tavington's brigade raids Anne's town and assembles everyone in the church, including Anne. Knowing that they are secretly aiding the militia, he demands the location of their camp. Despite one towns-person giving it away, Tavington burns the church, killing everyone inside. Upon discovering the tragedy, Gabriel and several other soldiers attack Tavington's encampment, where Tavington kills Gabriel before fleeing. Benjamin contemplates desertion, but after seeing the American flag Gabriel repaired, he is reminded of his son's patriotic dedication and decides to rejoin the others. Villeneuve berates Benjamin's resignation and tells him of how he watched as his wife and two daughters were strung up on a ship overrun by British soldiers and burned alive. Benjamin devises a battlefield tactic that uses Cornwallis's pride against him. Benjamin's militia joins the Continental Army regiment and confronts Cornwallis's troops at Cowpens. Watching the battle from afar, Tavington is impatient and decides, against Cornwallis' express order, to charge forth with his Dragoons. Benjamin and Tavington engage in personal combat. Benjamin rallies the militia to push forward and soon faces off with Tavington, dueling fiercely until Tavington manages to wound Benjamin, forcing him to the ground. As he is about to behead Benjamin, Tavington berates him for wanting to kill him before war's end. Benjamin ducks, grabs hold of a bayonet-fitted musket at the last moment, and stabs Tavington through the gut. General Cornwallis sounds the retreat of his forces, and the rebels celebrate. The British were defeated later that year at the Siege of Yorktown in 1781. The French navy finally arrived to blockade the British, and Cornwallis was bombarded by both the Continentals and the French, holed up in his mansion. He finally acknowledges defeat and surrenders. Afterwards, Benjamin returns to his family and discovers that his former militia has rebuilt his homestead in honor of Gabriel's dream of building a new world.
