Read more →A middle aged man Sankar Shastri is a reputed Carnatic Singer who has a great following in the society. A young lady Tulasi deeply admires Shastri because of her love for Arts. One day when Shastri is training his daughter, Tulasi dances to his song and inadvertently gets noticed by him. Observing it when she stops dancing, he encourages her to dance by singing. She dances to his song with great passion and finally acknowledges her devotion to him by touching his feet. When Tulasi's mother, who is a prostitute, tries to force her to spend a night with a rich man, Tulasi runs away and boards a train. When Shastri watches her in the train, he takes her under his wing but soon her mother gets hold of her and takes her away and allows the rich man to spend a night with Tulasi. He rapes her and later insults Shastri. Unable to take that insult, she kills him and goes to Shastri and falls on his feet. Shastri asks his lawyer friend to protect her from the court case. When the friend tells him of the public perception about him and Tulasi, Shastri tells him that his conscience is clear. When the court awards jail term to Tulasi's mother, Shastri takes Tulasi along with him in his vehicle from the court to home. The entire village watches it in surprise. The lady cook leaves Shastri's house for bringing Tulasi home. When Shastri's 10 year old daughter Sarada struggles to make arrangements for preparing food, observing a silent Tulasi, Shastri tells her about the importance of humanity over caste. Tulasi feels happy and makes arrangements to prepare the food. One day before giving a performance when Shastri encourages Tulasi to join his team, his team members and the public leave the place showing their objection. Feeling sad, Tulasi too leaves the place. A disappointed Shastri alone sings in front of the Lord, showing his love for him. A dejected Tulasi leaves the village, not wanting to bring further disgrace to Shastri. Soon she realizes that she is pregnant and decides to give birth and in the future send her child to Shastri and indirectly fulfill her dream. After 10 years, due to the rising popularity of pop music, Shastri loses his loyal audience and his comfortable lifestyle and is living in a small house with his grown-up daughter. Tulasi sends her 9 year old son Sankar to Shastri to make him his disciple but Shastri rejects Sankar disappointing Tulasi. Later Sankar impresses Shastri and joins as servant in the house and also accompanies him outside. Observing it, Tulasi feels happy. One day while teaching a student when a music teacher experiments on a raga, Shastri observes it and expresses his disappointment by urging him not to insult the raga. Later when Sankar asks Shastri about it, he explains and sings the raga and teaches it to him. One night, when some youngsters make nuisance by singing pop songs aloud, Shastri goes up to them and talks about classical and western music showing the command and respect he has for music. The youngsters go completely silent realizing Shastri's talent. One day Tulasi comes to know that due to financial difficulties, Shastri has been taking money from a shop owner. Shastri gives some money to his struggling old team member, showing his generosity and Character. When the lawyer friend of Shastri bumps into Tulasi one day, he hands her over the inheritance left by her dead mother. When she refuses to take it, he advises her to use the wealth for a good cause, making her think about it. She clears the debt of Shastri by paying the money he owes to the shop owner and requests him not to inform it to Shastri. When the lawyer friend of Shastri brings an alliance for Sharada, Shastri rejects it initially, but later agrees after coming to know of the boy's interest in classical music. To perform the wedding, when Shastri tries to mortgage his ornament to the shop owner, the latter refuses to take it and gives money, thanks to Tulasi. The lawyer friend convinces Shastri to sing on the wedding day on the occasion of reopening of a hall. Tulasi arranges for a concert on the day of Sarada's wedding in that hall, named after Shastri. He sings at the concert but suffers a heart attack midway through it. While he is struggling to sing, Sankar takes over from the sidelines and sings the song. Shastri watches him with pride and also observes Tulasi and realizes that he is her son. When Sankar finishes the song, Sastri symbolically anoints him as heir to his music and dies. Tulasi too dies at Shastri's feet, showing her devotion towards him.
