This 2012 Tamil Romantic comedy has been written and directed by Thulladha Manamum Thullum fame ``Ezhil``. The film stars Sivakarthikeyan who is adept at playing comic roles and debutant Aathmiya as the leading actors. D. Imman has scored the music for the film. This laugh riot is a sentimental family film and is set in a village.

Story of a mechanical engineer, on his dream to create a car company of his own that builds the cheapest cars, meets 2 women in his life and the relationships get in the way of his passion.

Mariappan (Napoleon) is the faithful servant of Rajeshwari (Sheela), whereas Rajeshwari spreads terror among the villagers. Mariappan's son Veeranna (Napoleon), a military officer, is back to his village and he tries to be quieter than before. His cousin Vennila is deeply in love with him. One day, children drunk the river's water and they fell ill because of a ladder factory which threw wastewater in the river. As a responsible citizen, Veeranna files a complaint against the owner of the company Rajeshwari. In addition to this, Veeranna saves Rajeshwari's daughter Aishwarya (Preethi Varma), who was naked, from drowning. Rajeshwari orders him to leave the village on the spot but he refuses and he marries Aishwarya. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.

Madhuravel works as a vegetable vendor with his friend Pandu. He is a do-gooder and protector of the family of Kamatchi and her two daughters. Madurey eradicates loan sharks and fights "bad guys" in the market. Meanwhile, Anitha has a liking towards Madurey and manages to win him over from Maheshwari. One day, while Madhurey was fighting some goons, a goon attempts to throw a briefcase at Madurey, but it falls. When the briefcase opens, Kamakshi finds a newspaper with Madurey and her daughter Susheela's photos in it. She then shoots Madurey, and he is hospitalized. At the hospital, when Kamakshi questions Pandu about how he can be an accomplice to someone who she thought was a murderer, he asks her if he knows who Madurey really is. The story shifts to a flashback, where Madurey is the district collector of Madurai, with Susheela and Pandu as his assistants. He is the action-packed bureaucrat who takes to the streets to solve the citizens' problems. He does the job of policing and is up against criminals. He does not believe in IPS and the police force to clean up the city. So one such clean-up operation takes him to KTR, a don who is running a parallel law enforcement system with his own court. He doles out justice to all and is God to the ordinary. Madurey does not take lightly to this parallel outfit. A clash takes place, and Susheela is killed in a fight between Madurey and KTR. KTR puts the blame on Madurey. Now, Madurey goes undercover to surface as a vegetable vendor because his aim is to pin down KTR. From now onwards, it is Madurey on a rampage until KTR is finished and the murder charge is removed forms the rest of the plot.

The film was launched by C. V. Sridhar in 1980 as a Cinemascope venture and was then titled as Sakthi. Sridhar collaborated with Kamal Haasan after the success of the 1978 film Ilamai Oonjal Aadukirathu, which had also featured Rajinikanth. The film was meant to be the first film which featured Kamal Haasan and Ambika as a lead pair and stills were released featuring Ambika in a swimsuit. The film got delayed and was put on the back burner, before it re-emerged in 1986 under the title of Meendum Suryodayam and shooting progressed. It was planned for an April 1986 release, which got postponed to 1 May 1986.There was a local authority election in March 1986 and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won seats. Sridhar felt that if the film released with the title Meendum Suryodayam (Rising Sun), it would be seen as if they are welcoming the DMK's re-emergence, whose symbol was that of a rising sun. Hence the title was changed to Naanum Oru Thozhilali. Sridhar had previously started a film with the same title in the mid-1970s, with M. G. Ramachandran in the lead; that film was shelved

Vijay, a Tamil professor, is in love with Uma, a lawyer. Along with Ravi, he fights to put an end to prostitution and the production of illicit liquor in their locality.
