Stranded in Africa, Chuck and his pal Fearless have comic versions of jungle adventures, featuring two attractive con women. Chuck and his pal Fearless flee an African carnival after their sideshow causes a fire. Following several similar escapades, they've finally saved enough to return to the USA, when Chuck spends it all on a lost diamond mine. A New York bandleader journeys to Hollywood when he is offered a contract with a studio, but he is determined to do things his way and not theirs. Popular New York band leader Terry Rooney (Cagney) is offered a lucrative film contract out in Hollywood. Rooney and his soon-to-be wife pack up and head for California. Upon arriving, they meet Mr. Regan, the head of the studio, who believes that Rooney's true lack of desire for stardom is arrogance on the band leader's part. When his first film is huge success and a hit for the studio, Regan tries to hide the truth from Rooney. Feeling a need to get away from Hollywood, Rooney takes his wife on a South Seas honeymoon cruise, only to return to the real truth of his fame. —SindyMac

Mary Barrett is an aspiring Opera singer who is taken under the wings of a famous operatic maestro, Guilio Monterverdi. After spending endless working hours together and arguing, their relationship develops into love. But, jealousy and misunderstandings prevent Mary and Guilio from acknowledging their true feelings. —Kelly Despite losing a radio opera singing competition - the winner to train under renowned Milan-based vocal coach Guilio Monteverdi - Mary Barrett decides to move to Milan anyway to pursue her dream of an operatic career. By happenstance, Monteverdi hears Mary sing and does take her under his tutelage. He insists that she live with him solely as his singing protégé. He states that there is no romantic innuendo intended in his offer. Theirs is a rocky relationship. He is a stern teacher and disciplinarian, but under his methods, she does become a great operatic singer, however one that still does require his support and guidance. Despite their initial proclamations to the contrary and Mary's relationship with Bill Houston, Mary and Monteverdi do fall in love. However, Monteverdi's disgruntled ex-student and ex-lover, Lally, will do whatever she needs to break them up, both professionally and personally. —Huggo
