The Brave New Films documentary Immigrants for Sale follows several families who are stuck in the cross hairs of the immigration epidemic, and serves as a deeply intimate and compassionate portrait of the suffering caused by the ill-conceived laws designed to contain it. The film also points to a far more insidious and sinister dynamic which lies at the heart of many of these laws and policies: the capturing of illegal immigrants, and the destruction of their families, for the benefit of politics and profit. Immigrants for Sale dissects one such regulation - SB1070, a sweeping and controversial anti-immigration bill enacted in Arizona - and shows the egregious human rights violations which have rippled from its passage. As the film suggests, the 2010 bill, which has since been adopted in various forms in a series of other states, provides a financial boon to one of the most profitable industries in the United States: the prison system. After all, more inmates equals more profit, and an anti-immigration bill like SB1070 ensures that a steady stream of fresh inmates will continue to cascade upon the nation's prisons in large quantities. As a result of these measures, the United States prison system accumulates an astounding profit of five billion dollars annually. The private prison industry, led by the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), played an essential role in the formation of SB1070. According to the narrative set forth the bill represents an exciting new business model for these companies - the detainment of illegal immigrants as a means of expanding their bottom line. These damning observations on the political and corporate machinations surrounding immigration reform are played out against a decidedly more humanistic landscape; one where spouses and children take center stage as the innocent bystanders of the war on immigration. By planting an unflinching eye upon their personal struggles, Immigrants for Sale allows us a greater understanding of the inadequacies of current immigration policies, and the need for continued debate and reform.

Anwar is a Muslim who lives a middle-class lifestyle in Lucknow, India, along with his mom, brother, and Bhabhi, Suraiya. Anwar is doing a research on ancient Hindu Mandirs. They rent out a room to a poor widow and her attractive daughter, Mehru. Anwar falls in love with her. Anwar is certain of Mehru's love for him, but is shocked when he finds out that she has eloped with Udit, his Hindu friend, who is about to immigrate to America. He informs her mother, who in turn calls upon her nephew and other kith and kin, to locate Mehru. They do locate the couple abroad a bus, Udit is killed, while Mehru is beaten and ultimately hangs herself. A guilt-ridden Anwar takes shelter in an ancient Mandit in Dholpur and his bag, which contained drawings of Mandirs and notes on 'Lord Krishna', 'Devi Maa Meera', and 'Mehru'. This bag ends up with the Police and they believe that Anwar is a terrorist who is planning to detonate bombs in sacred Hindu temples. The place is surrounded by Police, politicians who are anxious to win the Hindu vote, the media, and a huge crowd who are here to see the show. Anwar contemplates his life and gets visits from 3 people. The first is an extremist Imam, who tells him to kill himself rather than surrender; the second is Police Superintendent Ashok Tiwari, who wants him to surrender quickly so that he can be with his ailing wife and young daughter; and the third is media-person, Anita, who wants a live interview so that she can establish her credibility with her boss. Set amongst post 9-11 scenario, amidst the craze for Valentine's day, Britney Spears, Osama Bin Laden, George W. In the state of Bihar kidnappings are at large where the needle clearly points to MLA Tabrez Alam,who in actual conducts the kidnapping through his henchmen Gaya Singh.Ajay Shastri a medical representative dreams of joining the police force but has to bribe the officials,his father Professor Raghuvansh Shastri is man of principles and wants Ajay to follow the same.But Ajay borrows a huge some from Gaya's men Murli to bribe the officials for a job but when his father exposes the corruption in system he looses his job and money.Murli plans to kidnap Shastri in return of money in order to save his father Ajay along with his friend Kashinath plans to kidnap a sales tax officer which fails, Gaya is now behind them for coming in his business.Ajay is soon arrested for same and gets beaten by Gaya upon his release he teams up with a corrupt cop and kills Gaya.Tabrez Alam whose angered with this wants to kill Ajay anyhow but finds him at his door step where Ajay tells him that he killed Gaya only to get close to him.Ajay asks Tabrez Alam to recruit him in his gang he sees potential in him and does so within no time Ajay's gang becomes one of the most powerful kidnapping gang in the region. —alex.mjacko@gmail.com Ajay lives with his stern, honest, disciplinarian and Gandhian widowed father, Prof. (retd.) Finally he borrows 5 lakh rupees to bribe his way on the merit list, & soon his name is shown on the shortlist. Just before his selection, major differences crop up between Home Minister Dinkar Pandey and his dad, with the later threatening to expose the corruption within the State Ministry. Dinkar ensures that Ajay's name is dropped from the shortlist, and the money-lender sends his goons after him, giving him 3 days to come up with the money. A desperate Ajay decides to be part of the lucrative kidnapping scheme in Bihar, abducts a Government official and demands a ransom so that he can re-pay his loan. Unfortunately, this Government official was under the protection of underworld Don, Gaya Singh, who carries out his operation from prison. When it is discovered that Gaya is involved, the abduction goes awry, with Ajay being arrested by the police, held in a cell, where he is severely beaten and humiliated by Gaya Singh. Ajay is discharged from custody when no one identifies him. Ajay is enraged, frustrated with his life, and he decides to take kidnap another government official. This official was on the list to be kidnapped by Gaya Singh, under instructions from corrupt MLA Tabrez Alam. When Gaya finds out that Ajay is behind this kidnapping, he locates and decides to kill him, a tussle ensues which results in Gaya's death. Ajay then takes over from Gaya and is accepted with open arms by Tabrez and his men. What Ajay does not know is that Tabrez is a ruthless man, who has killed his very own nephew, the son of his brother, Usman Alam, when he became an informant for the police. When Ajay's popularity grows, he is invited by Dinkar to join forces with him, as everyone from a lowly Police Constable to the Home Minister gets a share in the ransom money. Ajay refuses, however, Tabrez is misinformed about this and thinks that Ajay is against him. Now Ajay finds himself alone, as even his father has forsaken him. When the President of India is kidnapped by Kashmiri terrorists in Locarno, Switzerland, an Indian secret agent is sent to find him and set him free. With the help of an Indian singer he will make the "Impossible" to complete the mission. Adit, played by Arjun Rampal, is in the Indian army. When the Indian president is kidnapped, Adit is sent undercover to rescue the president and his daughter. Adit becomes a journalist for IndiaTimes, and manages to make his way to Switzerland with the help of a police officer called Bhatnagar. On the flight, Adit meets Alisha (Priyanka Chopra). Alysia is a singer, and has come to Switzerland under a contract in order to do a show with Sam Hams. Her friend Shilpa accompanies her. However the people who Alysia and Shilpa have come to Switzerland with, are drug smugglers. Shilpa is murdered when she finds this out, and Alysia pretends she knows nothing. She meets up with Adit, and together they help each other. Upon arrival in Switzerland, Aditya is met with Atul Bhatnagar, another Indian Secret Agent, and a beautiful singer/dancer, Alisha, who claims that she has seen her colleague murdered and the body taken in the trunk of a car. Crime Branch is headed by Sadhu Agashe (Nana Patekar). It is the section of the Mumbai Police Department responsible for handling the underworld related cases. Agashe joined the police in October 1985, and it has been 19 years since then. He joined the Special Forces in 1994. Sadhu is the city's best inspector, with an enviable reputation and record of encounter shootings. Sadhu is known for apprehending criminals and shooting them down. He then makes it look like an "encounter", where the criminal and the police got into a shootout, and the criminal was shot dead in resultant police firing. Sadhu is a media sensation for eliminating many known underworld hit-men. Though tough, he is a loving husband to his wife Namita (Revathi) and son Aman (Tanmay Jahagirdar) and also helps his informers and other poor people in times of need. His immediate junior, Imtiyaz Siddiqui (Yashpal Sharma) despises Sadhu to no end; he feels Sadhu intentionally belittles him. Sadhu does not believe that Imtiyaz has reliable sources and discourages him from taking any action. Also, Imtiyaz is more concerned about adding to his encounter score and therefore ends up killing more than the primary target which is the main reason Sadhu dislikes him. To add to his woes, Imtiyaz is unable to surpass Sadhu's encounter "score" of 50. Imtiyaz himself is at 41. Jatin (Nakul Vaid) is a rookie to this line of policing who manages to impress Sadhu. The inspector takes the newcomer under his wing, further antagonizing Imtiyaz. Jatin follows Sadhu's instructions to the letter and doesn't get into the morality of their actions. Sadhu even invites Jatin and his fiance Vaishali (Hrishitaa Bhatt) for dinner at his home. Imtiyaz feels that he is being deliberately kept away from meaningful assignments that lead to fame and promotions. All of them report to the Commissioner Pradhan (Mohan Agashe) who is a fair and honest police officer. Pradhan knows about Sadhu's encounters and protects him as he knows that there is no evidence against the underworld and thus, they will never be punished by the courts. Sadhu establishes a love-hate friendship on the phone with Zameer (Prasad Purandare), a notorious underworld leader based abroad, who grudgingly admires Sadhu for his no-nonsense attitude. Zameer and rival don, Rajshekhar run the Mumbai underworld. Zameer believes that police is eliminating his gang by being in cahoots with Rajshekhar. Sadhu retorts that he himself has killed 16 of Rajshekhar's men. Sadhu Agashe's world begins to turn upside down as Pradhan retires and with the entrance of the new commissioner, Suchak (Jeeva) who has a strong link to the Don, Rajshekhar. Suchak doesn't like that Sadhu is a hero for the media, who ignore his press conference to interview Sadhu. Suchak signals his intentions to Sadhu when he reopens the cases files against Sadhu. Jatin knows that Suchak is against Sadhu and tries to warn him. Pradhan tells Sadhu that senior officers are temporary and that he should not abandon his path. Suchak takes a liking towards Imtiyaz who is willing to do encounters primarily of Zameer's men mainly on Rajshekhar's orders. During one the raids against Rajshekhar's main hit-man Feroz (Parvez Fazal Khan), Imtiaz messes up, resulting in the death of Feroz's mother & Feroz's arrest (Sadhu didn't kill Feroz as he was under orders from Suchak to capture him alive). Shortly thereafter, Feroz escapes custody. Suchak starts undermining and belittling Sadhu. Sadhu continues on his honest path. Eventually, the pressures of his career take a toll on his personal life as Sadhu's wife is killed by an assassin's bullet, which was meant for Sadhu. All the suspicion falls on Feroz, but Sadhu is unable to trace him down. Suchak orders Sadhu not to follow any leads against Feroz without any solid evidence. When Sadhu threatens to resign, Suchak installs Imtiyaz as the new Head of the Crime Branch. During his personal investigation into this matter, Sadhu kills a few right-hand men of Rajshekhar. Sadhu is compelled to resign from the force and Suchak (on Rajshekhar's orders) sends Imtiyaz to kill Sadhu. Sadhu manages to kill him and in a peculiar chain of events, Sadhu Agashe, a once famed inspector, becomes a fugitive of the law. Suchak announces shoot at sight orders against Sadhu despite Pradhan's advice to the contrary. Sadhu is forced to ask Zameer for help in escaping from India. Meanwhile Jatin, who has been growing increasingly disenchanted by Suchak's behavior, resigns and calls for a press conference and exposes Suchak's connection to Rajshekhar. Suchak disputes this but is suspended pending investigation. Sadhu goes to Zameer's HQ and thanks him for releasing him and tells him that he is now Zameer's man. As Zameer and Sadhu are drinking alone celebrating this, Sadhu breaks a glass and uses the sharp edge to kill Zameer and escape. Before killing Zameer, Sadhu had accused him of killing his wife & then framing Feroz for the same. At a location abroad, Sadhu and Pradhan are having coffee. Pradhan asks Sadhu about why he has run away thereby proving the allegations against him, Sadhu tells him that it is part of his plan. He was able to kill Zameer as a fugitive which he never could have as a cop. He says that he will now go to Rajshekhar since Rajshekhar is thrilled at Zameer's death and kill him too. Sadhu says that he doesn't care what the world thinks of him, and he will always be a cop and will continue his work of eliminating crime until he dies. He requests Pradhan to look after his son who is with his aunt in Pune and Pradhan contemplatively agrees.

During a rainy night, an investment banker`s car breaks down in the red-light district. While seeking shelter, he meets a prostitute, and an unexpected friendship begins to form.

While receiving the honors, Dina Nath informs the Government that his village is still without electricity, and he is promised that electricity will be provided in his village immediately. And electricity is provided in the village. Dina Nath's son, Kanji, who is in Mumbai, hears of this and returns to the village along with a C-Band ten foot satellite dish and a super flat stereo television. When the satellite is set-up, the villagers are thrilled by the TV shows. This leads to the village priest complaining to Chotey Thakur Rudra Pratap Singh that the villagers are turning away from his temple and worship. Rudra is not concerned as he himself has a TV set in his home. She has led a very sheltered life thus far and is yet to explore the terrain of the Indian Socio-political landscape. While she finds Siddharth's Naxalite rhetoric attractive, she is not sure if she can subscribe to it with her full heart. And every time they come to point of choice, Siddharth chooses his ideology over his love for her thus breaking her heart time and again. Vikram is a middle-class boy who dreams of making it big, whatever the cost. He is particularly afflicted by his father's Gandhian ideas, but irritated and frustrated at the same time, seeing his father's way of life as ineffective in bringing about a change. Vikram loves Geeta, without any reciprocation from her side for his feelings. Vikram despises Siddharth, mainly for having the affections of Geeta. Vikram sees Geeta and Siddharth having sex. Siddharth leaves for Bihar to bring about a revolution; Geeta leaves for Oxford to get a degree (She refuses to go with Siddharth, citing resistance from her parents), and Vikram sets up an office in Delhi. A few years later, Vikram is a fixer in the power corridors of government, Geeta is married to a promising IAS Officer Arun Mehta (played by Ram Kapoor) who, as Geeta says, "has it all", and Siddharth is still trying to ferment a revolution. But all is not as it seems. Below the mask of happiness, each is quite unhappy. Vikram has 'made it', but he still cannot get Geeta, the love of his life. Geeta is married, but she still meets Siddharth on the sly, cheating on her husband. Siddharth has a split in his organization and decides to rebuild his roots in the hinterland of Bihar. He tells Geeta that he can't see her for a while. Vikram buys an old palace for 3.5 Crores with the intention of turning it into a hotel. For this, he has to involve his relatives to pitch in with funds, who are in politics. Eventually, Geeta gets a divorce from her husband because of her love for Siddharth, even though she does not want to hurt her husband's feelings. Geeta joins Siddharth in the village where she starts to teach the children of the village, whilst the police repeatedly try to hunt down her now husband, Siddharth. She bears a child with Siddharth whom she sends to London to her parents since she believes he deserves more than to grow up in the remote village. Eventually the police round up the entire village, capturing Siddharth and Geeta for intent to cause unrest and brutally assault them both, fabricating a story of a villagers' riot to explain their injuries. Geeta is soon bailed out of prison by her now influential ex-husband, while Siddharth, on the run, is shot by the police and admitted to a local hospital and is placed under arrest while Geeta believes him to have been killed. Vikram, who has been consoling Geeta and taking care of her during the absences of her ex-husband and of Siddharth, is informed that Siddharth is still alive. Vikram travels to meet Siddharth and release him using his influential contacts, however he has an accident on the way and is admitted to the same hospital as Siddharth. During the night, local Naxalites break into the crude hospital and free Siddharth while Vikram still lays there. The next morning, the policemen in charge of guarding Siddharth, frustrated, accuse Vikram of having conspiring to free Siddharth and beat him up. After discovering that he is a man of influence, they resolve to kill him and dump his body to make it unrecognizable. Vikram, terrified, attempts to escape but is chased down, however the policeman finds that the Naxalites have emptied his revolver, and they beat Vikram up with an iron rod. Soon, the police chief and a local politician come looking for Vikram and are able to stop the policemen from killing him. Vikram suffers heavy brain damage and is rendered handicapped, while Siddharth tells Geeta that he intends to leave but Geeta refuses to accompany him. Siddharth has moved beyond simply trying to foment a revolution and is prepared to delay it because he feels that the people are not ready in spite of their saying otherwise. He goes to London to study medicine and through a letter, voices his anguish and disillusion with the idea of revolution, he writes saying "I hope the mysteries of the human body will be less confusing" (in reference to his studying medicine and quitting the revolution). The last scenes show Geeta going back to continue working in the village and taking care of the handicapped Vikram, who can no longer speak. With Vikram writing "I love you Geeta" on a rock, as they both sit by a placid lake and watch the sunset.
