Viren is soon told via the woman's cell phone that the kidnappers demand is one Crore rupees, which Viren arranges to pay. As soon as he arranges for the money, he is told since necessary medicines had to be provided for his ailing daughter, the demand is now two Crore rupees. A frantic Viran also arranges for this additional amount, but barely an hour later, he is told that the ransom demand is now three Crore rupees. Viren does arrange for the money, after cashing all his savings, and mortgaging his property, and hands over a large suitcase to the woman, who sprays his eyes and makes her getaway. When he returns to Bombay, he meets with his wife and the Police Commissioner, Rana, as his daughter has yet not been released. A Mumbai man is brutally murdered by goon John (Shereveer Vakil) and group of gangsters led by ruthless kingpin Bappu Ganesh (Upendra Limaye). Inspector Tavde (Raju Mavani) is on the payroll of Bappu. Tavde intentionally arrives first on the murder scene so that it becomes his case, and it is not randomly allocated to any other officer. The murder was conducted in broad daylight as Bappu wanted to send a message to his enemies. As time goes on, Bappu becomes more and more powerful, until he manages to seize power from the government of Maharashtra and make himself minister of the state to seize all of Maharashtra's money. Shiva Kumar (Mohit Ahlawat) joins the police force and is appointed under Tavde. Shiva sees that the entire station is be paid by Bappu including Inspector Sawant (Zakir Hussain) and Inspector Sarvar Sheikh (Sanjeev Wilson). Shiva silently observes as the police officers openly share cordial relations with Bappu's men inside the police station. Bollywood (Ninad Kamat) is a waiter at a nearby cafe where all the police officers eat food and go for tea breaks. Shiva lives in Bombay with brother Daksh (Ranvir Shorey) and sister-in-law Manasi (Suchitra Pillai). Manasi is acerbic that Daksh has paid for Shiva's police training and wants Shiva to contribute financially to the house. Shiva is a small-town person (from a village called Sangli) and has no corrupt bones in his body. Daksh is more practical and tells Shiva not to take his police duty too seriously. Shiva meets Sandhya Joshi (Nisha Kothari), a journalist who is investigating the murder by John. Sandhya comes to the police station to ask Tavde what progress he has made. Tavde retorts that there are no witnesses to the crime despite the murder taking place in the middle of a crowded street in daylight. Bappu summons Shiva for a meeting and understands that Shiva is a no-nonsense type of person and is not afraid of political power. Sandhya reaches out to Shiva when some eve teasers harass her colleague when she leaves work to go home. Shiva intervenes and slaps the eve-teasers even as they proclaim to be sons of powerful politicians. Sandhya falls in love with Shiva as he is very different to any policeman that she has met previously. John and Shiva meet in front of Tavde and don't like each other from the start. John has his eyes on Sandhya, after he sees her riding a bike with Shiva. John tries to put his hands on Sandhya, but she was with Shiva at the time and Shiva beats up John very badly. John is forced take refuge in Sawant's police station to save himself. At an internal inquiry, Shiva alleges that there are 17 cases against John, but Sawant says there is no proof against John. Tavde asks Bappu to intervene and find a solution to Shiva. Bappu sends his 2nd in command to get Shiva on his payroll and offers Rs 10 Lakhs. Shiva breaks his nose and sends him back to Bappu. Bappu orders a hit on Shiva via Malaysia assassin Kutney (Ganesh Mayekar). Kutney attacks Shiva when he was out shopping with Sandhya. He manages to stab Sandhya, but Shiva is saved, and he defeats Kutney. Kutney gives evidence against Bappu to Shiva. Bappu is now forced to leave his house and go underground. Home Minister Manohar Shirke (Dilip Prabhawalkar) calls Shiva for a meeting and tells him that Bappu is his man. He threatens to either transfer Shiva or hurt his loved ones including Sandhya. Tavde hires goons to put some acid on Sandhya. They abduct her with an aim to sexually assault her and then put acid on her face. She was talking to Shiva on the phone at the time, so Shiva tracks her down in time and saves her. Shiva marries Sandhya. He moves into his own flat at Malad. Shiva uses an old friend of Bappu, Yusuf, to call him and reveal his location for a meeting. Shiva and the police attacks and arrest Bappu, John and their goons. Bappu tells Sawant that if Shirke doesn't release him in 24 hours, he will spill the beans on everyone. Sawant tells Shirke and Shirke orders the assassination of Bappu, by paying 2 killers Rs 1 Crore. But Bappu is taken away from jail before the assassins can get to him inside the jail. Shiva has Bappu. Shirke hauls Shiva in front of an inquiry commission and Shiva resigns along with his supporters Inspector Sudhir Kamat (Nagesh Bhonsle), Inspector Salim Inamdar (Pankaj Jha), Hawaldar Atmaran Bhende (Dinesh Lamba). Shiva and his friends turn vigilantes and attack Bappu's warehouses across Bombay. Shirke and Sawant decide to go after Shiva's family, but he had anticipated this and already moved them to a safe-house. Meanwhile John gets free and releases Bappu and the other hostages. They kill Shiva's friends and take Sandhya hostage. Salim survives and follows Bappu and his men and informs Shiva about Bappu's location. This call is intercepted by Sawant, who sends the assassins to this location. As John moves to sexually assault Sandhya, Shiva arrives and beats him dead with his bare hands. As Shiva arrests Bappu, the assassins arrive. Shiva and the 2 assassins have a fist fight after one of the assassins shoots Bappu in the leg after he tries to run away. Shiva kills both assassins and Tavde gets killed when one of the assassins fall on him. Now Shiva arrests Bappu and tells him that Shirke will send more assassins to kill him. His only choice is to turn a government witness. Bappu agrees. Sawant runs away (he is later arrested in UP) and Shirke commits suicide.

Being unprepared for unforeseen situations, they are forced to barge in and take shelter in a house and take the people in the house as hostages. The hostages create a series of situations too complex for the inept kidnappers to handle. A powerful patriarch and gangster, Sarkar, turns his back on his son, Vishnu, who kills a movie star. Irked by his father`s attitude, Vishnu joins hands with his father`s rival and devises a plot to kill him.

It is about a travel agent called Sarika ( Urmila Matondkar) who meets and falls for a mysterious businessman Karan Rathod (Saif Ali Khan in his first negative role). After Karan involves Sarika in looking after a suitcase full of illegal firearms belonging to his friend, a hit man, she is arrested for having links with the underworld and is remanded to judicial custody. Karan sends Kamalesh Mathur to her, a defense attorney, seemingly to fight her case, but who in fact tricks her into confessing that she knew the hit man and was acting of her own free will. The judge sentences her to 7 years hard lab our without parole. Sarika then realizes that Karan is actually an associate to the underworld and that he had her framed to keep police eyes away from himself. She finally escapes from prison with help of another prison-inmate. The way she is made to confess to a crime she did not commit, the portrayal of the hard life in prison and her friendship to a prison inmate who ultimately helps her escape the prison seems to be inspired from the novel If Tomorrow Comes by Sidney Sheldon. Once outside, she begins to plot revenge on Karan. Not only does Sarika want to kill Karan, she wants him to suffer and wants to humiliate and frighten him. First she kills Mathur and throws his body off the balcony of his multi-storeyed flat. Karan remains oblivious to the fact that the murder could have been done by Sarika, even though he knew that she had escaped from prison. He blames the murder on rival gangs. Sarika then books a hotel room immediately next to Karan's and follows him for days. Karan is staying with a new girl in his hotel room, and she watches him and this girl go shopping, dining, swimming, and enjoy life as a whole. However one evening Karan is whisked by underworld men to meet their leader and Sarika follows them. Karan meets Sanjeev, brother of underworld don Nanda. Sanjeev is shown counting a huge booty of cash. Sarika watches Karan and Sanjeev exchange heated words through an open glass window. Karan leaves Sanjeev's room after a while and returns to his hotel. Half an hour later, Bilall, an aide of Sanjeev, getting no response from Sanjeev's room decides to check for himself. Bilall is shocked to see Sanjeev murdered, and the entire load of cash missing. Everything points to Karan being Sanjeev's murderer. The underworld's begins to hunt down Karan. Sarika, whose long patience has paid off, enjoys this moment. Not content with Karan hurt and frightened, Sarika meets Karan when he was trying to elude hit men sent to kill him. She pretends to be still in love with him, feigns surprise and happiness. She offers him refuge in her hide-out, so that she can enjoy his misery first hand. Karan feels that he has been framed by Bilall and goes after him. After he has killed him, police come and arrest him. They interrogate him about Sarika who they think are involved with him since they were staying at the same hotel and since they feel that she has killed Mathur. The realization that Sarika was there with him at the hotel, leads Karan to finally realize that Sarika is the person who framed him. However, before the police can take him to the police station, he manages to escape during a shoot out between the police and Nanda's men who have come after him. Karan then takes Sarika forcefully to Nanda, Sanjeev's elder brother, but a police raid cuts short their heated exchanges. Sarika escapes, as does Karan, but Sarika manages to take him hostage in his car. At gunpoint Sarika asks Karan to drive to some hills miles away from the city. She takes him inside a cave, knocks him unconscious and ties him with chains to the rocks. On regaining consciousness, Karan finds himself captive, and Sarika leaving him after telling him that she had searched for days to find such a place for him to die slowly in. She leaves her torchlight. Once the light from the torch goes out, rats come out and begin to attack him, as Karan used to tease Sarika for her fear of the pests. Karan dies a long and painful death. Sarika voluntarily returns to jail as she had had the pleasure of killing Karan in the manner she desired
