He claims to be a teetotaler, but is convinced to try some gin and he begins to wear the family pants, take charge of family matters, including aiding the romance of his daughter, Lois (Patricia Ellis), with Jerry Wayne (Warren Hull). After his wife Evie (Dorothy Vaughan) and daughter Alice (Mary Treen) leave for an evening at the movie theatre, his lodge friend, Jake (Hobart Cavanaugh), comes to remind Horatio about tonight's lodge meeting. Lois and Jerry convince him to go. Earlier in the day, Horatio was at the bank when an armed gang robbed him of his boss Jonathan Ramp's (Clarence Wilson) security bonds. After swallowing a 10 percent salary cut, Mr. Ramp told him he will be deducting their $30,000 value from his salary. In order to evade the police manhunt, two robbers hide out at the local lodge meeting with Horatio. Horatio's boss shows up and fires him. The gang ditch the bonds in a stranger's coat pocket. Jerry proposes to Lois. Lois asks for permission to marry from her father. Jerry brings the Justice of the Peace (Arthur Aylesworth). As they complete the ceremony, Evie and Alice walk into the living room. She then throws out the Justice. She berates drunk Horatio until he slaps her. His boss shows up and insists the police arrest Horatio. On searching him, they find the bonds and assume he stole them. After the police take him to jail, gangster Mugsy O'Bannion (Robert Gleckler) and his henchman show up at the front door, demanding to see Horatio. Evie recognizes him as "Harold McCauley," her old sweetheart. As they hold the women hostage, Jerry walks in armed. When the gangsters realize his gun is a flashlight, they jump him. During the struggle, Lois gets the gun and holds them at gunpoint. They take turn them in at the police station and are offered the O'Bannion reward. Lois instead works to get her father released. When they visit him in jail, he is in a jail cell with Horatio holding Mugsy in a hammerlock wrestling hold, all the while berating Mugsy for all the years listening to Evie compare him to her "ideal man." Then, as Lois and Jerry and combing yellow pages for defense lawyers, Jake walks in to tell them he saw the gangsters put the bonds in Horatio's coat. Jerry then threatens Horatio's boss with a defamation lawsuit for false arrest. As a result, at the jail, Jonathan Ramp offers Horatio an equal business partnership and clears him of grand larceny charges. Later at home, Evie apologizes to Horatio for her mistakes as she washes the dishes, taking over the duties from all the chores she used to force him to do.
