As the Traveling Man crosses over from this life into the next, he visits with each of eight friends. In this first part of his journey, he travels from the setting of the sun to morning, seeing the lives of four friends in a new light. In this first of two parts, "Praying the Hours (Part 1)" follows half of the journey of the Traveling Man, who, killed in a car accident, is given the grace to observe-and influence-the lives of his friends before he departs. Given the eyes to see them all in a new light, he starts at the end of the evening with his benefactor "Compline," moves with the deepening night to say goodbye to his mentor "Vigils," greets the morning with his friend "Lauds," and completes the first half of his journey by encouraging his friend, "Terce." —Lauralee Farrer
