The Law They Forgot
They remove a servant from the natural son who had been attributed to him to save the reputation of his real mother, a young woman of social standing. María is a maid at Doña Petronila's student boarding house. Petronila has a daughter, Helena, who is dating Carlos. Alberto, an outstanding law student and an exemplary man of solid principles, lives at the boarding house. Helena becomes pregnant by Carlos, whom she cannot marry until he graduates and settles down. To hide her dishonor, Doña Petronila conspires to keep Helena away from the boarding house until she becomes a mother. Then, she assigns María the right to bear the child and gives her custody of the child until Helena and Carlos can marry. María accepts the proposal, which means she is socially disgraced. Helena gives birth to a girl, whom María raises with love and dedication. When the time comes to hand her over to her biological mother, María's love for the little girl is so great that she refuses to do so, fleeing the boarding house to live on her own. Doña Petronila and her daughter intervene in the courts, which take the child away from María, prosecute her, and send her to prison. Meanwhile, Alberto, who has graduated as a lawyer and fights for the recognition of the rights of single mothers, visits detention centers and, in one of them, finds María, whom he remembers from his time as a student and boarder. He takes an interest in her case and offers to be her defense attorney in the trial she will face. Once the hearings begin, based on legal norms, the court's decision to take the child away from María and give her to Helena and Carlos is being finalized. However, Alberto, in a fiery final argument, appealing to the law they've forgotten, the law of the heart, will give events an unexpected turn. —Humberto Lucero, Buenos Aires, Argentina
