Colonel Suryaveer "Surya" Singh (Amitabh Bachchan) is a bitter man and ex-Army officer, hired by his friend and former comrade Captain Shekhar Verma (Arjun Rampal) (Shekhar lives in Bangkok and runs a strip club) to protect a little girl, Anamika R. Rathore (Rucha Vaidya), who resides in Bangkok, Thailand with her Non-resident Indian (NRI) family. Mother Nikasha (Perizaad Zorabian) & father Ravi (Vikram Chatwal). The family is wealthy and is worried with the spate of increasing kidnappings in the city. They are looking for an armed bodyguard for Anamika. Ravi hires Surya after he admits that he has a drinking problem. Surya promises to put his life on the line for the job. Kripa "Krispi" Shankar (Daya Shankar Pandey). an Indian, gives Surya information and goods & befriends him. Surya drinks alcohol frequently (he accidentally shot two children while serving as a soldier in the Kashmir Valley. Surya did this to save Shekhar's life and was captured by the terrorists. He was tortured for 3 days. Shekhar then mounted a rescue operation, took 2 bullets and killed 5 terrorists to save Surya), and is not interested in befriending the girl. Nikasha also approaches Surya and asks for a friend or Anamika, but Surya is rude to her and says that he will be a bodyguard and nothing else. Nikasha is offended and walks away. Eventually, Anamika wins Surya's heart and he helps her to prepare for a swim meet (Anamika was losing precious seconds as she was scared of the sound of gunshot. Surya helps her overcome this fear and beat the competition). Ravi and Nikasha leave for London for Ravi's business meeting. Anamika stays behind in Surya's care. Anamika and Surya bond, and eventually Ravi and Nikasha return. Nikasha is happy to see Surya close to Anamika.. One day Anamika gets kidnapped and Surya receives serious injuries (3 bullets on his body) in his attempt to prevent the kidnapping. ACP Harvinder "Harry" Singh (Akhilendra Mishra) is assigned to investigate the case. The kidnappers asks for $1 MM, headed by Wong (Rajendranath "Raj" Zutshi). Ravi delivers the cash as per instructions, but Harry intervenes and attacks when the cash is collected and shoots the cash collectors. In retaliation, Wong pretends to have shot Anamika dead. Shekhar breaks the news to Surya and wants him to go back to India for a few days. Surya gets to the airport, but cant board the flight. Surya vows to kill every person involved in the murder of Anamika. Surya uses his investigative skills, only to find out about the conspiracy that is behind the little girl's kidnapping. Surya works with Krispi to track the person (Lee Kap (Denzil Smith)) who originally picked up Anamika at the kidnapping location. Surya cuts off Lee's fingers post which he admits that he kidnaps targets on behalf of Sammy (Aditya Lakhia) and delivers them to Sammy's nightclub. Surya then shoots Lee. Bangkok Police Officer Inspector Kelly (Kelly Dorjee) knows that Surya has killed Lee, but offers to help Surya in his mission to bring down the kidnapping gang. Surya reaches the nightclub and figures that Sammy's nightclub was just a transit point to Wong, who was the caller to Ravi and Nikasha. Sammy also reveals that Harry stole the ransom money after shooting the cash collectors. Surya takes Shekhar's help and gets weapons. He tracks and attacks Harry in full force. Surya puts a bomb up Harry's ass. Harry confesses that he stole the ransom money, but it was only $0.5 MM and not the full $ 1 MM. He says Chang (Ravi's lawyer) had kept the money in the car and hence must have stolen it. Surya goes to Chang's house and finds many financial papers. Surya confronts Ravi next. Ravi engineered his daughter's kidnapping so he could receive US$500,000, without the knowledge of his wife, Nikasha. Anamika had kidnapping insurance for $ 1 MM, provided through Ravi's company. Ravi stole half the amount and deposited it in his personal account. Chang had promised Ravi that Anamika would be returned two days after her kidnapping. Surya gives Ravi the gun and bullet that Surya had used in a suicide attempt, so Ravi could commit suicide. Ravi shoots himself. Surya attacks Chang and learns that Wong is Chang's brother. Wong reveals that Anamika is still alive. Surya holds Chang hostage, while Chang's brother Wong holds Anamika hostage. When they come to exchange the people, Chang's brother reveals a great secret to Surya. Surya learns that Shekhar was all behind this (Shekhar runs the biggest kidnapping squad in Thailand). Surya kills Wong's men. A great fight between Shekhar and Surya starts. Shekhar is killed, and Surya spends the rest of his life with Anamika and her mother. In the end, Anamika (Lara Dutta) gets a new bodyguard and the film shows her during her swimming practice, with Surya and her new bodyguard (Abhishek Bachchan) 15 years later.

Indian Army Major Ranvir Kaul (Amitabh Bachchan) and some 30 of his colleagues were captured in Pakistan and held under brutal conditions for 33 years. The jail is headed by Maj Qureshi (Piyush Mishra), who does not like the brutal torture of the prisoners. Kaul attempts another escape (he steals a lighter from his torturer and uses that to light his guard's face on fire, when he was being transported between prisons) but is caught, beaten, berated and thrown back in prison. Eijaz (Aditya Srivastava) is the ISI officer in charge of torturing them. During the fracas one of his men does flee and through a sympathetic friend, Jabbar (Akhilendra Mishra), sends a letter home. Kaul's wife (Tanuja) and son Gaurav (Akshaye Khanna) petition the Indian Army but the General, though sympathetic, has his hands tied. He raises the subject and Pakistan will deny it and immediately the men will be shot; he cannot authorize Army action absent hard evidence (not just a letter); there are no other options. Kaul's son, Gaurav, sets off to find his father. he is not sure if Ranvir is still alive, but his mother is resolute in her conviction. Other prisoners include Naru (Ashraful Haque), Anand (Rajendra Gupta), Nayyar (Kamlesh Sawant) & others. Gaurav smuggles himself into Pakistan (By getting captured as a Pakistani dead person and is thrown across the border by BSF in a body exchange) (Gaurav travels by train but is recognized by a policeman from the India matchbox he carries. Gaurav manages to kill the policeman and continue ahead) and meets Jabbar and discovers (he captures an interrogates a guard from the first jail) that his father has been transferred to a different prison camp (Since the original prison was being inspected by the Human right commission), Saran Jail under the cunning and sadistic Sohail (Kay Kay Menon). Sohail hangs one prisoner who had tried to escape during the transfer process, on the day of their arrival at his jail. Radhika (Amrita Rao) is Jabbar's daughter and falls in love with Gaurav. Kaul meets another set of captured Indian POWs (Capt. Ajit Verma (Nishikant Dixit)) at this new prison. Kaul attempts another escape. One man sacrifices himself on the electric fence (Actually Ranvir had got the short stick, but his junior sacrificed himself to save Ranvir) as others go through. Sohail bemusedly sighs as the others, once past the fence, are blown up by the landmines (10 soldiers die in the attempt). Kaul and the remaining prisoners are again beaten and kicked back into their barracks. One of the prisoners, Khan (Sanjay Dutt), manages to evade the landmines (by jumping over the dead bodies) and escapes. Gaurav meets him accidentally, while Khan was being pursued by trained dogs and Pakistani military police and brings him to safety. Gaurav attacks a military courier and, using his uniforms, infiltrates a Pakistan Army office block. Gaurav is caught by Eijaz, but Khan had followed Gaurav and saves his life. He steals a set of plans which reveal a water main under the prison. His father and the men can dig their way to this main and crawl out. With great reluctance Khan gets arrested again and tells Gaurav that the escape will happen in 10 days. Sohail correctly guesses that Khan is back for a reason. Khan discloses to Kaul that his son is here; this news, and the water main, is a great inspiration for the men. The men quietly begin digging a tunnel to the water main. They discover the body of an Indian Army Captain Jatin (Raj Zutshi) in the debris under the prison, but this Jatin is among them! Khan and Kaul realize that he is in fact a Pakistani spy. Gaurav and Khan had planned the escape for the night of the tenth and Jatin, the spy, had dutifully reported this back to Sohail. Kaul and Khan decide that the escape will happen on the ninth. Jatin is not told of this, but the men manage to send a coded message to Gaurav. The following day Khan notices the number 9 scrawled on an army supply truck entering the prison: it is Gaurav's reply. He will await the men near the water main outlet on the ninth. On the night of the escape the men overpower the guards (Ranvir stays out of the barracks as the men sneak in a dummy to maintain the head count. Then the major attacks the guards at night to steal the keys and rescues the men from their cabin) and kill Jatin. They enter the water main and begin digging away the last few meters of remaining debris. The knocking in the pipes travels up to Sohail's kitchen sink; Sohail quickly discovers the escape and hotly pursues the men down the pipe. Gaurav digs from the other side and, just in the nick of time, the debris is cleared, and father and son are reunited. The men make it through. One of them (Jatta (Raghuvir Yadav)) sacrifices himself on a land mine inside the water main which caves in and blocks Sohail. Rajan (Arif Zakaria) also stays back at the camp to fire at the Pakistani and prevent them from pursuing his comrades. Gaurav leads his father and the men to a railway line, but the train is delayed till morning. The men split up to avoid detection and arrange to meet at dawn near a border point village. They arrive at the border point, but Sohail and his men are in close pursuit. There is a firefight. Khan puts up a brave fight but is shot down. Ranvir Kaul and Gaurav and the handful of remaining prisoners finally get across the border in a Pakistan army truck. Sohail is right behind them, but his jeep is disarmed and he is surrounded by Kaul and the prisoners. Kaul points to the border line behind them; they are now on Indian soil. Kaul, now an Indian Army soldier, attacks and kills Sohail in hand-to-hand combat, and throws his body across the border. The film ends as Ranvir Kaul and his men are reinstated in the Indian Army and salute the Indian tricolor.

Alok is fond of music and enrolls in classes run by Pandit Jamuna Prasad (A. K. Hangal). On his return, his father asks him to accompany Ashok to their law firm and start learning to practice, which he agrees to do. Triloki wants Alok to learn basic law from Ashok and eventually study for a law degree. Triloki does not encourage Alok's interests in singing and other fine arts. Ashok understands and tells Alok that while he will need to come to the office, but after that he is free to do what he wants. Triloki himself doesn't attend office as he is running for local elections and is focused on that. Alok met Tonga wallah Ganeshi (Asrani) at the station upon his return. Ganesh and Alok used to be childhood friends. Ganeshi's father used to drive a Tonga for Triloki, but was fired when Triloki bought a motor car. Alok is fond of music and learns from Ganeshi that a courtesan Sarju Bai Banaraswali (Chhaya Devi) sings very well. Ganeshi is a tenant with her and hence knows about her. Radhiya (Rekha) is Ganeshi's sister and is learning music from Sarju Bai. Alok goes to the slums to meet Sarju Bai and she chases him out thinking he is a goon lusting after Radhiya. Ganeshi finds Alok and brings him to his hut, where they sing a song together, which Sarju Bai hears. Sarju Bai is impressed to know that Alok learned music from Pandit Jamuna and takes him under her wings. Maharaj Dinanath (Manmohan Krishna) is a singer in his own right. He has feelings for Sarju, but never expresses them and continues to care for her selflessly. Sarju tells the story of Raja Bahadur (Sanjeev Kumar) who lost his wife.. Raja was a huge fan of music and Sarju was young. She left her Kotha and went to Raja that night, when his wife died. Together they sang a duet and that's how Sarju shared Raja's grief with him. One day, Triloki finds out that Alok has not been going the firm but is instead spending time in the local slums with a former courtesan named Sarju Bai Banaraswali (Chhaya Devi). He cautions Alok about this, but Alok continues to visit Sarju Bai. He and Radhiya get close to each other. When Mr. Gupta (Yunus Parvez) approaches Triloki about taking possession and demolishing the slum area (Gupta had leased his land to the slum area many years ago. The land was next to his mill which is now growing and he needs the land back to expand his own business), Triloki readily agrees and with his expertise manages to sway the Court's decision in Gupta's favor. Meanwhile Triloki sends Alok to meet Gupta and Mrs. Gupta (Lalita Kumari) daughter Sulakshana (Farida Jalal) for a possible marriage. Sulakshana tells Alok that she loves someone else Kishan (Benjamin Gilani) and hence cant marry Alok. As a result of Triloki's legal brain, Sarju Bai and others are rendered homeless. With the fee he receives from Gupta, he asks Alok to purchase a used car for himself. But Alok purchases a horse-carriage and decides to drive it himself to make a living. Maharaj Singh (Shammi Kapoor) is a proud owner of several derby-winning stallions, and lives in a palatial farmhouse with his wife, Rukmini (Indrani Mukherjee) and young son, Chimpu. Chimpu has a birth mark (in the shape of a trident) on his back. Maharaj Singh is a champion horse rider and prides himself on taming the wildest of beasts. One day robbers attack his farmhouse with a view of stealing the stallions, but Maharaj fights them, killing the son of the leader of the robbers, Maan Singh (Madan Puri). Maan Singh swears to avenge the death of his son and abducts Chimpu. Chimpu was 2 years old and the night he was abducted, was his birthday. Servant Ram Singh (Ramesh Deo) gets blamed & kicked out of the household by Maharaj Singh. Ram Singh used to look after Chimpu inside the house and was with him all the time. Even at the time of Chimpu's abduction, Ram Singh was sleeping in Chimpu's room and hence was the prime suspect. Maharaj Singh spends all available resources to find Chimpu, but without any success. 20 years later Ram Singh is at a circus & finds a recently released convict, Badal (Amitabh Bachchan) whose mannerisms match Maharaj Singh. Badal has the same accurate aim with a gun that Ram Singh had last seen in Chimpu. Ram Singh was running a shooting game arcade and was paying 20:1 odd if the shooter could hit 6 balloons with 12 shots from a pellet gun. Badal corrects the shooting sight of the gun and hits 12 targets in a row. Badal also says the same things that Maharaj used to say. Badal can ride horses like an expert. Badal has taken to a life of crime to support the poor villagers who are dependent on his meager income. Badal used to work at a racecourse but was fired for someone else's mistake and was jailed for the same. Badal was released as part of a leniency declared on India's Independence Day and that day, he had decided that honesty does not pay. Badal has no birth mark, but Ram Singh tells Badal about Maharaj and Chimpu. Ram Singh convinces Badal to get a tattoo (for which they pay Rs 5 to a tattoo artist) & to pose as Chimpu to inherit the wealth. In exchange Ram Singh will get a 50-50 share of the Maharaj's wealth. Ram Singh teaches Badal everything about Chimpu's childhood memories and toys. Ram Singh tells him about Chimpu's mother Rukmini, a toy horse, a cradle made of sandalwood, stud farms, horses and the fact that the parents have been waiting for Chimpu for 20 years. Badal reaches the Maharaj's village by train and travels on foot to his estate. On the way he runs into college students camping in the jungle protesting the cutting of forest to create roads in the hills. Sunita is part of the group, and Badal is instantly smitten with her. The students invite Badal for a meal, impressed with his singing skills. Badal saves Maharaj's daughter's Sunita (Saira Bano) life from a stray horse that had escaped the Maharaj's stables & slowly they fall in love. At this point he doesn't know Sunita is Maharaj's daughter. Badal returns the horse to the Maharaj's stables and gets a job as a farm hand on his estate. Sher Singh (Jagdish Raj) is the manager of the Maharaj's stables and is impressed with Badal's skills with horses. Badal learns that Rukmini has not emerged from the shock of losing her child. She is still bedridden and sick. Maharaj Singh doesn't visit his stud farms anymore as he devotes all his time to the care of Rukmini. Badal goes in front of Maharaj & shows off his shooting & horse skills & impresses him. He then infuriates Maharaj in a series of incidents. At first, he disrespects a gift given by the Maharaj by shooting it with Maharaj's own gun, and then proceeds to insult the Maharaj's horses, which prompts him to tear Badal's clothes off & he sees the birth mark. This prompts Maharaj & Rukmini to accept Badal as their long-lost son, Chimpu. But at this point Badal also learns that Sunita is Maharaj's daughter & technically his sister. Sunita is confused because at some level she refuses to believe that Badal is her brother. As the news spreads Maan Singh wonders how Maharaj got a new son. Maharaj starts involving Badal in his business and starts handing over the reins of the offices to him. Now Ram Singh starts blackmailing Badal for his share. But Badal is moved by the trust & respect Maharaj Singh gives him & refuses to taint that by giving in to Ram Singh's demands. When Ram Singh tells the truth to Maharaj, at that moment Badal also professes the truth to Sunita. Maharaj confronts Badal & Badal accepts his folly. But Maharaj can't kick him out as this news would kill his wife who has grown fond of having her son back after 20 long years of separation. Maharaj also notices that Badal had every opportunity to steal money from Maharaj, as he was handling transactions worth several Lakhs, but every cent was accounted for, and all the money was safely deposited in Maharaj's accounts. Maan Singh approaches Badal & says that he has the real son Chimpu & asks Badal for Rs 2 Lakhs to keep his silence. Maan Singh says that he wanted to kill Chimpu after abducting him but was swayed by the child's innocence. Chimpu was raised by Maan Singh as his own son Suraj (Vinod Khanna) (& who is now a robber). Badal gives the Rs 2 Lakhs to Maan Singh, but kidnaps Chimpu when everybody in Maan Singh's camp is asleep. This lures Maan Singh to the estate & brings Maan Singh, Suraj, Badal in front of Maharaj. Maan is defeated in gun fight & he is forced to admit that Suraj is none other than Chimpu. When Maharaj's wife finds out, she forgives Badal & accepts him as son-in-law. Suraj agrees to leave Maan Singh & come back to his real family.
