Dr. Prasad takes her with him to live in Switzerland and this is where multi-millionaire Raj (Bobby Deol) enters her life and wants to marry her. Dr. Prasad persuades her to let go of Babu's memory and marry Raj, which she does. At their engagement party, Raj's friend, Rohit, who was missing in India, is found. His appearance disrupts Durga's life as she thinks that her Babu has returned back. Rohit however recognize her and convinces her that her "sir" where in Babu has returned. Suman and Mahesh have been married for several years but have not been blessed with any children. Suman prays in the temple frequently and hopes that her prayers will be answered. Her prayers are heard and she soon gets pregnant. During her delivery in the hospital, there is a power outage which sets off a fire, which is soon brought under control by the fire department. Two children, both boys, are saved by a nurse, who soon passes away due to extensive burns. One of the boys is of Suman, but no one knows which one, as the second boy's mother had died during delivery. So Suman and Mahesh take both, Suren and Naren, home in the hopes of solving this mystery. Major Bhagawat Singh comes to their home claiming that he is the father of one of the boys, but again no resolution is reached, and both the children grow up under the loving care of Suman, while Mahesh hopes to identify his son during his lifetime. Years pass by, both the boys are now handsome young men. Mahesh's friend, Sudhakar, asks his daughter, Kiran, to assist Mahesh in identifying his son, and she moves into their house. She starts taking notes and studying them in detail. She falls in love with one of them, and is unable to tell who is indeed Mahesh's son. To make matters worse both Suren and Naren are in love with her, and want to marry her, fully aware that she can only marry one. There is only person who knows this secret, and he/she may not come forward to reveal this - for she/he has a reason for this to be kept secret - forever.

When his spies inform him that his reputation may be at stake as Sitaji had spent over a year in Ravanji's Lanka, he asks a reluctant Lakshman, to ensure that Sitaji is sent to exile. A devastated, pregnant, and distraught Sitaji is rescued by Maharishi Valmiki, who takes her to his Ashram, renames her Lokpavni, where she subsequently gives birth to two sons, Kush and Lav. Valmikiji trains them in every possible way, including knowledge, warfare, and religion. Ten years later, the twins decide to visit a drought and famine-ravaged Ayodhya to get the blessings of Ramji and Sitaji as well recite the Ramayan - and this is where they will find out that Ramji has exiled Sitaji, and they return home disappointed and refuse to recite the Ramayan anymore. At the recommendation of the Chief Minister, a criminal psychologist is sent to assist the ACP, namely Kamdev Singh alias KD., who proposes that instead of tackling the two gangs, he will try to get the children of Malhotra and Singh to fall in love, thus ending their traditional rivalry. Meanwhile Kishan goes to Khurana's bungalow to bring his wife Sanam home; what he finds is a very stubborn, spoiled, and rude Sanam, who is not willing to go with him. A rich girl appoints a simpleton, as her bodyguard. She soon falls in love with him, which creates havoc in his life. The story begins starts with the birth of a baby girl, Raja Nandini, in the world of feudal landlords - Zamindars - whose word is law for the villagers who work on their land. Nandini's three brothers throw a feast in honor of the girl child. The young son of the local singer (who had died) is brought in to sing for the event. The three brothers raise Nandini like their own child as their parents had died. At the age of 5, an astrologer predicts that Nandini will bring much happiness to the family, but her marriage will based on her choice and not the choice of her brothers. This angers the brothers and to prevent this from happening, she is raised within the confines of the house. She is home schooled and when she does go out, all the men are warned to hide from Nandini and that seeing Nandini will be met with dire consequences. Raja Nandini (Karisma Kapoor) reaches puberty. The few males allowed around her are the service staff and her bodyguards. Meanwhile, the boy who sang, Rama (Venkatesh) grows up to be a naive and gullible simpleton with a heart of gold. He is raised by his widowed mother Savitri (Raakhee Gulzar). He doesn't go to school and spends his time singing and entertaining the people of the village. One day the bodyguards get into a fight with Rama who beats them up. Impressed with Rama's naivety and fighting skills, the brothers hire Rama to be Nandini's bodyguard and butler. Nandini meanwhile starts to resent her lack of freedom. She engages Rama to show her the village without her brothers knowledge. Rama complies with her wishes and shows her the village which results in Nandini getting sick. Rama is blamed for Nandini getting sick and gets beaten up by the brothers. Nandini who has just started to like Rama feels guilty for being the reason for him getting trashed. This incident brings them closer together emotionally. Nandini realizes she is now in love with Rama. One day, a factory worker is punished for leering at Nandini. He plots to kill Nandini at the inauguration of the new factory owned by her brothers. Rama overhears the plot, and in a desperate attempt to save Nandini lunges on her and inadvertently feels her up in public. Nandini doest mind and defends Rama by arguing that Rama wouldn't do something like that in public. But her brothers are enraged.They beat him to the point that they almost kill him. Nandini stops them and gives him a chance to explain. When Rama explains the situation they hang their heads in shame. Rama quits his job on the spot, despite Nandini's silent apology. That night Nandini decides to meet Rama and apologize and perhaps convince him to come back to the job. Rama refuses to comeback as he doesn't want to put up with the violent nature of her brothers. She thinks if Rama marries her, they won't be able to manhandle Rama. She convinces Rama to tie a wedding chain (Mangalsutra) around her neck which will protect him from her brothers. Rama without realizing the sanctity of the act does as told and doesn't realize he is now married to her. Rama comes back to work and is given a higher level of respect by the brothers for saving Nandinis life. Nandini too starts emulating her sisters-in-law in taking care of her husband. This makes Rama nervous but he still remains clueless, her change in behavior is noticed by her sister-in-law who urge the brothers to get Nandini married off before the situation gets any worse. Nandini realizing that they are trying to get her married off tries to make Rama understand that they are already married. Rama refuses to understand and runs away to his mother who upon realizing what has happened pulls him out of denial. She sends him away in an attempt to protect him. The brothers come to know whats happened and try to torture the mother to get her to reveal where her son is hiding. She is saved in time by her son who almost kills the brothers. The wives of the brothers stop him from killing them.

The village of Dhauladhar is situated in the mountains set among some of most scenic beauties that nature has to offer. Inder (Tinnu Anand) is a TV serial director who arrives in Dhauladhar to film his latest episode. He hires a guide (Sudhir Pandey) who helps him scout for potential shooting locations. He takes Inder to a large banyan tree which has 2 graves under its vast canopy. An old Medicant (Sanjay Dutt) lives under the banyan tree, who says that the graves belong to Sahibaan and Gopi and proceeds to narrate their story. Sahibaan (Madhuri Dixit) lives a poor lifestyle in a small village in rural India along with her mom (Anjana Mumtaz), dad Balakram (Satyendra Kapoor), and a mentally challenged cousin Kheru (Javed Khan). Balakram makes a living selling dolls. Sahibaan is in love with a homeless laborer, Gopi (Rishi Kapoor), who lives near temples and eats whatever the villagers give him. Gopi plays a melodious tune on his flute, which attracts Sahibaan to him. Gopi works as a shepherd to earn some money for his sustenance. Sahibaan is childish in her behavior and doesn't realize that she is a grown woman now. Sahibaan is 18 years old but insists that her father carries her on his shoulders and plays marbles with the children of the village. Gopi admonishes her and one day she falls into a river. Gopi looks at her water drenched body and sends her home. Gopi is very afraid of the water and says that he doesn't know how to swim. That day she grows up, throws her marbles away and starts helping her mother around the house. Sahibaan learns to cook food and sew clothes as well. She expresses her love to Gopi, who accepts. The area is ruled by ruthless killer, alcoholic and womanizer Kunwar Vijay Pal Singh (Sanjay Dutt). He is sympathetic towards the poor and has a rivalry with the landlord of the nearby province Tikka (Kiran Kumar). Tikka is considered ruthless towards his workers and Vijay stands up to him and his goons and fights for the rights of his village's workers. Vijay increases the daily wages for his workers from Rs 1.5/day to Rs 3/day. Due to this all of Tikka's workers come to work for Vijay and this enrages Tikka. Tikka forcibly takes the workers back to him lumber mills by whipping them and torturing their families. In retaliation, Vijay kills one of Tikka's supervisors. Mrs Tikka (Beena Banerjee) & Tikka's sister Rajkumari Razee (Sonu Walia) live with Tiika. Every night Vijay ravishes a new prostitute and sends her away the next morning. Tikka sends an assassin to Kill Vijay, but Vijay kills him instead. Tikka bribes Inspector (Mangal Dhillon) to open a murder investigation against Vijay. Inspector tries to get Vijay's fingerprints on his gun, in order to frame him, but Vijay is too clever and had already worn gloves. One day while chasing a rabbit, Sahibaan ends up in the palace ground of Vijay & is abducted by his guards and left at the mercy of Vijay, but Sahibaan manages to escape. Vijay, however, is unable to get her out of his mind and asks Diwan Durga Singh (Bharat Kapoor) to search high and low for her. The Diwan is able to find her during a Mela and takes several men, sweetmeats, jewelry and clothing to propose to a delighted and disbelieving Balakram and his wife. The same day Gopi was planning to ask for Sahibaan's hand in marriage from her dad. Meanwhile at the Mela, Razee was also present and was attracted to Gopi. Sahibaan's parents are angered when Sahibaan refuses to marry Vijay and asks them to get her to marry Gopi. When Gopi proposes to Balakram, Gopi is humiliated, beaten and asked to leave. Diwan returns to Vijay, who decides to kill Gopi. Vijay locates Gopi, beats him, and throws him in the river. Razee finds Gopi at a riverbank, barely alive and persuades Tikka to take him home. When Sahibaan says that Vijay had attempted to molest her, Balakram refuses to permit her to marry Vijay, despite of the fact that Vijay promises to stop drinking alcohol and having his way with women. Vijay forbids Durga Singh from abducting Sahibaan again, as he truly loves her. Both Balakram and Sahibaan set out to try and locate Gopi, as Sahibaan is convinced that he is alive. They find Gopi's clothes near a funeral pyre (these clothes were discarded by Razee as they were drenched in blood) and assumes that Gopi is now dead. Meanwhile Gopi gains consciousness under Razee's care. Tikka finds that Vijay is in love with Sahibaan. Gopi overhears this and runs after Sahibaan. Razee stops him and tells him that she loves him, but Gopi has already promised himself to Sahibaan. She convinces Gopi to come back and promises to take him to Sahibaan once the rains subside. Tikka agrees to help Razee as he wants to deny Vijay at all costs. Meanwhile Sahibaan gives up and agrees to marry Vijay. Tikka confronts Vijay but is instead beaten up by Vijay. But this gives time for Gopi to reach Sahibaan. Razee helps Gopi and Sahibaan escape, but Vijay pursues them. Durga stops Gopi and Sahibaan by putting rocks in their horse carriage path. Razee dies when the carriage overturns. Durga tries to convince Sahibaan, but she jumps into the river to escape. Vijay arrives and shoots Durga. Gopi jumps after Sahibaan. Vijay jumps to save both but can only flush out their dead bodies.

Premi is a bachelor who has re-located from distant Uttar Pradesh to Bombay, and makes a living selling poems to a wealthy man by the name of Benni. While visiting Goddess Durga Devi's temple, he sees an attractive young woman and instantly falls in love with her. Subsequently he finds out that she is a courtesan named Laila-Jaan. When he does venture into the dance hall, he finds out that she is singing his very poem that he had penned for Benni, and then he witnesses Benni himself as one of her clientèle. He gets himself hired by Laila-Jaan just to be close to her. He finds out that she is contemptuous of married women and regards herself much more superior than them. When the Thakur of Rajgarh invites her to sing and dance at his son's wedding, she goes there to perform. It is here she will find out that the ordinary women, she loathes, have nothing but hatred for her and her kind. Confused and surprised, she wants to give up her life as a courtesan. It is that night that she gets abducted. In the morning the Thakur finds out that she is missing, and also missing is Premi. The Zamindar's soul, unable to complete it's task during this life-time, wonders around in anguish and pain - waiting. For years powerful landlords have held sway over the poor illiterate farmers, keeping them impoverished, making them work as bonded laborers for paltry loans they had taken years ago, but which now have ballooned with the interest charged on the principal. One such story is of Mukhiya Hardayal, who is on the Panchayat, and is opposed to the cruel practices of Thakur Sher Bahadur Singh. When Hardayal's wife, Krishna, passes away while delivering their second son, Karamveer, he begins to hate, treat him contemptuously, generally ignore him and holds him responsible for his wife's death. Hardayal spends all his love for his elder son, Suraj, who does live up to his father's expectations and excel in his studies, so much so that the Thakur himself loans some money to Hardayal so that Suraj can further his studies in Bombay. After Suraj leaves, Hardayal finds himself enmeshed in the Thakur's loan, unable to re-pay it with the interest, he is severely whipped and made to work as a bonded laborer. Fifteen years later, the work and the beatings have taken their toll on Hardayal, and his spine is fractured beyond repair. Suraj returns home, finds the plight of his father, confronts Thakur, who in turn offers money so that Suraj can go abroad to further his studies. A grateful Hardayal accepts this offer - only to find out that this was another ploy of the wily Thakur to separate Suraj from his family, make Karamveer and Hardayal his laborers. Hardayal continues to work for the Thakur, hoping that one day Suraj will return and all his troubles will be over. What Hardayal does not know that Suraj may never return home, as he has been apprehended with smuggling drugs - and it looks like the Thakur will continue to have his way with Hardayal and the rest of the villagers.

A truck driver reports his criminal brother to police, leading to tragic consequences when a gang member kills him and his wife. Their two sons seek revenge while the released brother plots to divide them. Truck-driver Dharam Singh lives a middle-classed lifestyle along with wife, Banto, and son, Raja. He adopts an orphan, Veer Singh. When his brother, Kaalia, returns after being discharged from jail, he asks him to leave. Then he turns in some smugglers, who are arrested and imprisoned. But their boss, Mangal Singh, confronts Dharam, and ends up killing both Dharam and his wife. With the police hot on his tail, Mangal disappears, leaving Veera to bring up Raja with the help of Mehar, their neighbor. Years later, Veera and Raja have grown up with Veera looking after the trucking business, and Raja studying in college. The Police have been unable to even locate Mangal Singh. Veera would like to avenge his foster father's brutal killing, but before he could do so, Kaalia re-enters their lives, instigates Raja against Veera. As a result Raja accuses Veera of theft and asks him to leave. The question does remain: Will Veera and Raja ever reconcile? What exactly was Kaalia's motive in separating Veera and Raja? The story begins with a happy lower-middle-class family - Arun Verma (Anil Kapoor) an 8-year-old boy, his sister Komal Verma (Khushboo) a 5-year-old girl, his mother (Nutan) and his father Deepak (Girish Karnad) - living a peaceful life. Arun's parents teach their children through the famous title song "Zindagi Har Kadam Ek Nayi Jung Hai, Jeet Jayenge Hum, Jeet Jayenge Hum Tu Agar Sang Hai" which means that life is full of challenges at every step and still we will overcome all these if we are together. Arun's father is trapped in a murder case, for murdering a rich philanthropist Mr Oberoi, who refused to support his plan to start a music academy. A famous criminal lawyer G. D. Thakral (Amrish Puri) proves him guilty (with a false testimony of Oberoi's neighbor who gives a narration of happened on the night of the murder), and he is sentenced to be hanged by the court. Pleas by Arun's mother fail to convince Thakral to be truthful and spare her husband. Thakral asks her to give evidence for his innocence, to which she sadly quotes, "Jiske Paas Koi Sabut, Koi Gavah Nahi Hote Kya We Begunah Nahin Hote" ("one who does not have any proof or witness of innocence, are they not innocent?"). Thakral was determined to let her husband hang as this would get him lots of publicity (plus he was paid Rs 5 Lakhs by Oberoi's younger brother, who wanted control over his wealth). That night Oberoi's brother tries to kills the witness, lest he changes his testimony. The injured witness reaches the temple where Deepak's wife was sitting, desolate, and tells her that Deepak is innocent. But he dies there and then. She is not able to reach the jail on time. Deepak is hanged as per the court's decision. Arun's mother becomes mentally unstable from shock and is sent to a mental institution. Later Advocate Gupta (A. K. Hangal), the lawyer who defended Arun's father, finds out that Thakral had known all along that he was innocent, but only wanted him to be hanged. Arun finds out that Thakral abused the law. Arun's house and all his property are auctioned off by the court. Arun and his sister are not offered help. He grows up with the seeds of revenge in his heart. He becomes a successful defense lawyer and keenly follows every case of Thakral so that some day he can stand up in court against the unbeaten Thakral and beat him. One day Geeta Srivatsav (Meenakshi Seshadri) comes to him and asks him to fight the case of her sister, Dr. Asha Mathur (Bina), who is accused of killing a patient on duty with her medicine, which she gave from her purse. Arun refuses saying that if she can produce even a piece of evidence of her sister being innocent he will fight for her. Geeta replies coincidentally the same sentence "Jiske Paas Koi Sabut, Koi Gavah Nahi Hote Kya We Begunah Nahin Hote." Arun is instantly reminded of his mother's pleadings before Thakral. Geeta storms out of his office, but Arun is convinced to take the case. He meets Asha Mathur in police custody. He learns from her that on that fateful night she got a call from her ward assistant that her patient (who is a police witness) is in the ICU and needs her. She stops on the way (due to a traffic jam), and she impatiently moves out of her car to ask the reason. Meanwhile, somebody replaces the medicine bottle with the look-alike bottle of poison from her purse. On arrival in the hospital, she gives the liquid from that bottle to stabilize the patient. This resulted in the patient's death. It is shown that Asha Mathur's husband, Dr. Dinesh Mathur (Parikshit Sahni), had gone to meet Thakral and had asked him to fight his wife's case. Thakral says no, claiming he is very busy at the moment, but later tells his assistant that there is no way that this case could be won. Arun meets Dinesh Mathur and informs him that he will fight the case. He asked him about the nature of poison and for how long a person can sustain the poison; he learns that poison might result in death within 2 to 15 minutes depending on the body's resistance. The case begins with the prosecution lawyer recounting the events of that fateful day and telling that the medicine given to the patient was actually poison. Arun defends the case says that the patient did not die of this medicine. To prove himself right he drinks the medicine in court and refutes the claim. The court declares Geeta's sister not guilty. Just after the judgment, Dr. Mathur rushes Arun to hospital. It is revealed that the medicine contained poison, and Arun is saved in the nick of time. Geeta calls him on a beach to appreciate his efforts and kindness at the canteen. They fall in love. Thakral's son Vikram Thakral (Javed Jaffrey), a spoiled brat, not knowing anything about Arun, teases Geeta, which irritates the couple. Soon things take an ugly turn and Arun beats up Vikram. Dr. Mathur wants to appreciate and compensate Arun for the risky effort he took to save his wife. He calls him for a get-together in his mansion. Dr. Mathur gives Arun a blank check. Arun rejects the offers politely and says he did for his self-satisfaction. He then finds the same piano with the sticker of Bhagwat Geeta of Krishna which his father used to play and was auctioned. His memories are refreshed again and with the emotional request he tells Dr. Mathur that this piano is very significant to him and asks for it. Dr. Mathur very happily gives him the piano. One day at Arun's home, Mr. Mathur sees a photo of the former's mother hanging on the wall. He immediately recognizes the face with the patient he was handling for mental disorders. Arun and his sister request them to take them to her. In the mental hospital they see their mother. Her memories had stopped on the day of the incident; she feels that their children are eight and five, staying with father. Arun brings her mother to his house and tries to make her come back to normal; she regains her memory on hearing the song "Zingadi Har Kadam..." Meanwhile, Vikram wants to exact revenge on Arun and devises a plan to trap Komal who studies in the same college. He tries to impress her by his charms, dancing skills, and ways of flattering people. The plan works. Komal falls for him and he convinces her to run away with him (so that he can publicly defame Arun by leaving his sister). At the planned moment, when one of Vikram's ex-girlfriends Indu (Rabia Amin) shows up and tells Komal of Vikram's evil intentions. In the ensuing argument, Vikram murders his girlfriend which is witnessed by Dr. Mathur's family (as Arun had kept Komal with Geeta to keep her away from Vicky). Arun had been waiting for this moment to take revenge on Thakral. He steps in as the prosecutor against Thakral who is defending his son. The case moves to and fro (Thakral contends that Komal wanted to frame Vicky to extract revenge on his dad for hanging her father. Asha Mathur had weak eyesight and hence could not be relied upon to identify Vicky from a distance. Dr Mathur was also wearing a coat and trouser that night (as was Vicky), and Thakral alleges that Dr Mathur was having an affair with Indu and killed her when he saw Indu in his house and was afraid that Indu would reveal the truth to Asha) and, in the end, Arun has the upper hand (He produces a fake coat and knife and gets Thakral to admit that that night Vicky was wearing a white coat). That night Vicky bribes the police station inspector to release him for an hour so he can destroy the coat and knife. But this was a trap and Arun was waiting for Vicky. After a fight, Vicky manages to destroy the evidence, but letters from Indu fall into Arun's hands. Thakral kidnaps Arun's mother and attempts to blackmail him. Arun goes to save his mother and is beaten up by Thakral's goons. Even though injured, Arun fights back. In an attempt to shoot Arun, Thakral shoots his friend's son and is jailed. He is unsuccessful in saving his son, who is given the death penalty. Thakral becomes a mentally unstable person. Arun and his family are reunited.

The film stars Suresh Oberoi, Sarika, Amjad Khan, Ashok Kumar, Shakti Kapoor, Kalpana Iyer and Bharat Kapoor in lead roles. The film had musical score by Rajesh Roshan. Durjan Singh lives happily with his wife Radha and new born daughter but his world turns upside down when Radha is raped by Lala Manohar Lal following which she commits suicide.Durjan kills Lala while his son Vijay swears to revenge his fathers death,Durjan turns a Dacoit terrorizing the region once an injured Durjan takes shelter in the Church and requests father D'Mello to take care of his daughter who agrees on a condition that he wont ever meet her.Years later Durjan sees his daughter Ranjana has grown up under care of father D'Mello and is eager to meet her, he also finds that she is in love with Rakesh.Durjan finds that Rakesh's father isn't keen to marry them for being the daughter of a Dacoit and kidnaps Rakesh who in turn tells him that Ranjana will be heart broken if she finds her father is Dacoit Durjan Singh and so does happen.Durjan Singh and his gang surrender themselves and are imprisoned for few years,when he is released from of jail he goes to stay with Rakesh and Ranjana who are now married with a kid but Ranjana isn't happy to welcome him.Rakesh gets framed by Vijay for having a relationship with Rita following which Ranjana leaves the house but Durjan clears their misunderstandings. Things are back to normalcy but old habits die soon as Durjan is caught while stealing expensive diamonds from an exhibition where Rakesh is the security head following which both land up in the jail.

Inspector Vinod has a tough time dealing a murder case and is also frequently warned by a mysterious caller.
