Neha lives a wealthy lifestyle along with her mom, Suman, dad, and sister, Aarti. She meets with, falls in love, and gets married to Dr. Aman Mehra, who practices in Life Care Hospital, while Aarti, an Intern at the same hospital, is in love with Police Inspector Siddharth, and both hope to get married soon. After celebrating their first wedding anniversary, Aman is approached by a gun-toting couple on the beach, both threaten him, and ask him to sign a Death Certificate for a male named Avinash Malhotra, pronouncing his death due to natural causes. They also pay him an advance and tell him that the balance will be paid after he prepares the certificate. Aman is reluctant to prepare this document, but when Neha's life is threatened, he does so - little realizing that in so doing, the vengeful spirit of the dead male will manifest itself in Neha's body - changing their lives forever.

Based on the Hindu epic Ramayana's last chapter Uttar Kand. After defeating Ravanji, Bhagwan Shri Ram returns to Ayodhya, is crowned the emperor and settles down to a harmonious lifestyle along with his biological and fosters mothers, three brothers (Lakshman, Bharat and Shatrughan), their respective wives, and his very own wife, Devi Maa Sitaji, who is expecting soon. When his spies inform him that his reputation may be at stake as Sitaji had spent over a year in Ravanji's Lanka, he asks a reluctant Lakshman, to ensure that Sitaji is sent to exile. A devastated, pregnant, and distraught Sitaji is rescued by Maharishi Valmiki, who takes her to his Ashram, renames her Lokpavni, where she subsequently gives birth to two sons, Kush and Lav. Valmikiji trains them in every possible way, including knowledge, warfare, and religion. Ten years later, the twins decide to visit a drought and famine-ravaged Ayodhya to get the blessings of Ramji and Sitaji as well recite the Ramayan - and this is where they will find out that Ramji has exiled Sitaji, and they return home disappointed and refuse to recite the Ramayan anymore. With no hesitation Jagdish Verma grant a seven years period of rigorous punishment to Jogi despite his pleadings. The Judge family consists of his wife Urmilla, sons Kunal and Karan Verma; on completion of his seven years sentence Jogi is released from jail and abducts Urmilla, finds out that she is pregnant, ensures that she gives birth to a baby girl Tina and then kills her. On completion of eighteen years all the children have matured; Kunal and Karan manages the family's well-established business and also tend to there handicapped dad who is now paralyzed unable to move while Tina grows up to be a prostitute under Jogi's captivity. Judge Verma had at one time been Yogi's defence lawyer, but now must pass sentence against him. Yogi pleads his innocence, but the Judge finds him guilty, and Yogi is sentenced to a long jail term. Yogi swears to avenge this injustice and humiliation. Judge Verma's family consists of Urmilla (Beena), and two sons, Karan and Kunal (Sunil Shetty and Saif Ali Khan respectively), a daughter Tina. Years pass by and Yogi is released from jail. He is obsessed with hatred and vendatta against Judge Verma and his family, and abducts young Tina, and plans to use her to rule over the judge and his judgements. The family is instructed not to contact the police for fear of the death of Tina, and keep this abduction a secret. Tina (Madhoo) grows up in the company of Yogi and his men, without knowing her real parents and her brothers. Tina is then used to ensare the family into more deceit and entrapment as Yogi directs her to do so. The village of Dhauladhar is situated in the mountains set among some of most scenic beauties that nature has to offer. Inder (Tinnu Anand) is a TV serial director who arrives in Dhauladhar to film his latest episode. He hires a guide (Sudhir Pandey) who helps him scout for potential shooting locations. He takes Inder to a large banyan tree which has 2 graves under its vast canopy. An old Medicant (Sanjay Dutt) lives under the banyan tree, who says that the graves belong to Sahibaan and Gopi and proceeds to narrate their story. Sahibaan (Madhuri Dixit) lives a poor lifestyle in a small village in rural India along with her mom (Anjana Mumtaz), dad Balakram (Satyendra Kapoor), and a mentally challenged cousin Kheru (Javed Khan). Balakram makes a living selling dolls. Sahibaan is in love with a homeless laborer, Gopi (Rishi Kapoor), who lives near temples and eats whatever the villagers give him. Gopi plays a melodious tune on his flute, which attracts Sahibaan to him. Gopi works as a shepherd to earn some money for his sustenance. Sahibaan is childish in her behavior and doesn't realize that she is a grown woman now. Sahibaan is 18 years old but insists that her father carries her on his shoulders and plays marbles with the children of the village. Gopi admonishes her and one day she falls into a river. Gopi looks at her water drenched body and sends her home. Gopi is very afraid of the water and says that he doesn't know how to swim. That day she grows up, throws her marbles away and starts helping her mother around the house. Sahibaan learns to cook food and sew clothes as well. She expresses her love to Gopi, who accepts. The area is ruled by ruthless killer, alcoholic and womanizer Kunwar Vijay Pal Singh (Sanjay Dutt). He is sympathetic towards the poor and has a rivalry with the landlord of the nearby province Tikka (Kiran Kumar). Tikka is considered ruthless towards his workers and Vijay stands up to him and his goons and fights for the rights of his village's workers. Vijay increases the daily wages for his workers from Rs 1.5/day to Rs 3/day. Due to this all of Tikka's workers come to work for Vijay and this enrages Tikka. Tikka forcibly takes the workers back to him lumber mills by whipping them and torturing their families. In retaliation, Vijay kills one of Tikka's supervisors. Mrs Tikka (Beena Banerjee) & Tikka's sister Rajkumari Razee (Sonu Walia) live with Tiika. Every night Vijay ravishes a new prostitute and sends her away the next morning. Tikka sends an assassin to Kill Vijay, but Vijay kills him instead. Tikka bribes Inspector (Mangal Dhillon) to open a murder investigation against Vijay. Inspector tries to get Vijay's fingerprints on his gun, in order to frame him, but Vijay is too clever and had already worn gloves. One day while chasing a rabbit, Sahibaan ends up in the palace ground of Vijay & is abducted by his guards and left at the mercy of Vijay, but Sahibaan manages to escape. Vijay, however, is unable to get her out of his mind and asks Diwan Durga Singh (Bharat Kapoor) to search high and low for her. The Diwan is able to find her during a Mela and takes several men, sweetmeats, jewelry and clothing to propose to a delighted and disbelieving Balakram and his wife. The same day Gopi was planning to ask for Sahibaan's hand in marriage from her dad. Meanwhile at the Mela, Razee was also present and was attracted to Gopi. Sahibaan's parents are angered when Sahibaan refuses to marry Vijay and asks them to get her to marry Gopi. When Gopi proposes to Balakram, Gopi is humiliated, beaten and asked to leave. Diwan returns to Vijay, who decides to kill Gopi. Vijay locates Gopi, beats him, and throws him in the river. Razee finds Gopi at a riverbank, barely alive and persuades Tikka to take him home. When Sahibaan says that Vijay had attempted to molest her, Balakram refuses to permit her to marry Vijay, despite of the fact that Vijay promises to stop drinking alcohol and having his way with women. Vijay forbids Durga Singh from abducting Sahibaan again, as he truly loves her. Both Balakram and Sahibaan set out to try and locate Gopi, as Sahibaan is convinced that he is alive. They find Gopi's clothes near a funeral pyre (these clothes were discarded by Razee as they were drenched in blood) and assumes that Gopi is now dead. Meanwhile Gopi gains consciousness under Razee's care. Tikka finds that Vijay is in love with Sahibaan. Gopi overhears this and runs after Sahibaan. Razee stops him and tells him that she loves him, but Gopi has already promised himself to Sahibaan. She convinces Gopi to come back and promises to take him to Sahibaan once the rains subside. Tikka agrees to help Razee as he wants to deny Vijay at all costs. Meanwhile Sahibaan gives up and agrees to marry Vijay. Tikka confronts Vijay but is instead beaten up by Vijay. But this gives time for Gopi to reach Sahibaan. Razee helps Gopi and Sahibaan escape, but Vijay pursues them. Durga stops Gopi and Sahibaan by putting rocks in their horse carriage path. Razee dies when the carriage overturns. Durga tries to convince Sahibaan, but she jumps into the river to escape. Vijay arrives and shoots Durga. Gopi jumps after Sahibaan. Vijay jumps to save both but can only flush out their dead bodies.

Chowdry Sarang is an arrogant man who refuses to bow down before anyone. He has a sister Chand who falls in love with Shiva, who is from an agricultural family. Sarang kills Shiva and his family members. However, Shiva`s sister-in-law, Ganga (Rakhi Gulzar), stays alive and is pregnant that time. She vows to make Sarang bow down his head one day before her son. Also, her son and Sarang`s daughter would fall in love and her son would therefore become Sarang`s son-in-law and thus make him bow down his head. Whether or not Ganga fulfills her vow (Saugandh), forms the crux of the story.

Saajan eventually falls in love with Kajal, but this love affair is not acceptable to the society, which includes his parents Mr. and Mrs. Sood. Saajan's dad Col. Sood wants his son to join the Indian army. On the other side, this relationship of love is also not acceptable to Dhanraj, since he doesn't want any of his brothel girls to go into normal respectable society. Trapped between both, Saajan, along with his friends, rescues his love from the brothel. Saajan takes Kaajal's hand and they leave the house. A few days later, Police Inspector D'Souza knocks on Sood's door, informing him that a complaint has been made against his son for abducting a young prostitute, commonly known as Paro alias Kaajal, and of beating several men who tried to stop him. A few days later he is approached by the village Sarpanch, Dharamraj and threatened not to take matters further but he ignores this. Then one morning the dead body of his assistant is found in his dispensary; the case is then called up in court where by his witness turns hostile, he is sentenced to a long jail term and his wife, Aarti is accused of having illicit relations with his deceased assistant. She is then outcast from the village by angry villagers and handed over to Bombay's police officer, Pandey who attempt to sexually molest her; when she resists her daughter is killed. A few days later she approaches Minister, Channdas for justice but to her shocked she is instead raped by the Minister. She then attempts suicide but is rescued by advocate Bharti Mathur who promises to fight her case in a court of law ensuring that justice prevails. But Bharti herself is unable to do much due to extreme pressure from her politician husband, Chunautilal. After completing his jail term Vijay's attempts to locate his wife are fertile until one day when he happens to see her in the company of Channdas. Years later, Vijay is released from prison, and is anxious to meet his wife and child. When he returns home, he finds that his wife and child are nowhere to be found. Upon inquiring, he learns that his wife was jailed for killing their child, and is now earning a living as a prostitute, and is currently the mistress of Member of Parliament, Charandas. When Vijay attempts to meet with her, she refuses to recognize him.
