Katherine Newbury (Emma Thompson) is an acclaimed talk show host "Tonight with Katherine Newbury" with an extensive career in comedy, but her show's ratings have seen a steady decline over the past decade. The network's president, Caroline Morton (Amy Ryan), tells Katherine to fix up her show or she will be replaced. Caroline says that the current season will be Katherine's last. Katherine has a tendency to invite old women to her shows, who do not connect with the audience. Caroline says that Katherine is proud to not connect with the mainstream audience, almost as if it is beneath her to put the effort. Billy Kastner (Marc Kudisch) is a talent manager and wants Katherine to invite some of his talent to her show. Katherine has been hosting a late-night comedy show since 1991, and has hosted over 6000 episodes, with 43 prime-time Emmy awards. She has recently won the American Humor Award as well. Brad (Denis O'Hare) is the head writer of Katherine's show. Writers include Gabe (Lucas Caleb Rooney) who has a 2nd child and asks for a raise, Tom (Reid Scott) monologue writer, Burditt who has worked on the show for 27 years, Charlie, Eugene (Paul Walter Hauser), Chris Reynolds (John Early) and McCary (Blake DeLong) Gabe is fired by Katherine after he points out that she hates women and that the show suck and has had for years. Katherine has not met her writers for years and instead refers to them by numbers (1 to 7) as she can't be bothered to remember their names. In an attempt to revamp the show, Katherine has Molly Patel (Mindy Kaling) hired to her writing staff, mainly on the basis that she is an Indian American woman while many of the writers are white men. Katherine has a reputation of not letting women last on her staff. Hayes (Luke Slattery) is Tom's younger brother who has applied for a position at the show. Molly worked at a chemical plant and participated in an essay contest which gave her the chance to meet the president of parent-parent company of Katherine's show. In that meeting she asked for an intro to Katherine, as she loves comedy. Brad knows that Molly is not right for the job but hires her for 13 weeks. As a result, Hayes is rejected, and he was far more qualified than Molly. Katherine is under tremendous pressure and on the first day of the re-start, she fires 2 workers (Gabe and McCary - who came late to work), which also happens to be Molly's first day at work. This instantly makes all the other writers hate her, plus the fact that she berates the show in her very first meeting (which Katherine likes as she is being honest, and her husband Walter also said the same to Katherine the previous night). Tom hates Molly as she is the reason that Hayes did not get hired. Molly overhears him and retorts that she would rather be a diversity hire than a nepotism hire. In a team meeting, Tom educates Molly that all the writers get to office at 10 AM. They write their jokes based on day's headlines and submit to Brad. Brad selects the jokes and sends them to the writers for refinement. The show is taped at 6:30 PM and everybody goes home. Only Brad and Tom are allowed on the stage. Although Molly has little experience in comedy and initially struggles, she proves her worth by giving Katherine good material to work with on her show as well as ideas on how to reach out to a bigger audience. For e.g. she figures out that up until the crisis meeting Katherine had not even met most of the writers on her team. Burditt (Max Casella) becomes her new cabin share. In one meeting Molly gets told off for offering more unsolicited criticism, but no solutions. Burditt advises her to write something, and she does, which is accepted by Katherine for the very next show. But on stage she decides to skip the joke as it is considered too political and shows the true nature of Katherine's beliefs to the audience. The first attempt at inviting more "current" stars is a disaster when you tube star Mimi Mismatch (Annaleigh Ashford) is invited to the show, who storms off after she realizes that Katherine is attempting to make fun of her and show her in an intellectually inferior way. Mimi accuses Katherine of being bitter, out-of-touch and an old lady who is mean to people she has never met. Tom Campbell (Reid Scott) is the monologue and is threatened by Molly's presence as she is smart and has Katherine's ear. After the Mimi disaster Katherine hires a PR expert who makes her invite the media to a party at her home. Molly meets Katherine's sweet husband Walter (John Lithgow). She also saves Katherine from one of the pointed questions from the media about her harsh treatment of the writers. One night Molly has to attend a charity event where she is doing stand-up comedy in support of Lung Cancer. Katherine is working and forbids Molly to go, but she goes anyway. Katherine follows her and watches her make fun of the fact that she got fired 15 mins ago, on stage. Katherine is fascinated how Molly took personal events from her life and made that into comedy material. She decides to follow up on that and make the show more about herself. The jokes become more personal and political. The results prove successful. The show becomes more engaging, and the ratings go up, so much so that Caroline's family is also watching it. Katherine learns that Caroline wants to pick young, popular comedian Daniel Tennant (Ike Barinholtz) to replace her as the new host. Katherine resists, as Daniel's comedy is vulgar and misogynistic. With backup from her writers, Katherine defies the network's demands and decides on air to continue her career. An email from one of the writers, Charlie (Hugh Dancy), gets leaked, in which it is revealed that Katherine had an affair with Charlie after her husband Walter (John Lithgow) was initially diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. In the middle of the drama, Katherine fires Molly when she tells her she is acting poorly in the wake of the news (Molly advises Katherine to admit to the affair on the show and to share her side of the story). Eventually, Katherine makes amends with Walter and the other writers and admits her affair to her audience. Her sincerity and passion for the show convinces Caroline to let her stick around, and Katherine later apologizes to Molly and hires her back. One year later, the show's team has diversified, Molly is promoted to co-lead monologue writer, and Katherine's show is more successful than ever.

Meanwhile, five men so far have been killed by who the general public is nicknaming the "Body Parts Killer," as the murderer sends through the post body parts of the victims to the victims' loved ones. Lead investigator, Detective Inspector Holdall (Ray Winstone), assisted by Detective Inspector Callum MacPherson (Kevin Guthrie), is no closer now to discovering the Body Parts Killer's identity than when the murders started two months ago. Wanting results, Chief Superintendent McManaman (Sir Tom Courtenay) takes Holdall and MacPherson off the case, instead assigning it to Detective Inspector June Robertson (Ashley Jensen), an A-type personality who believes she can do no wrong, and will take credit for others doing right, which places her and Holdall at odds with each other. What were so far these two unrelated paths start to merge when Wullie tells Barney that he is giving his chair to a new barber, effectively firing him. In an ensuing altercation of sorts, Barney accidentally kills Wullie. When Wullie is reported as missing, Holdall and MacPherson are sent to investigate, and increasingly believe that Barney not only killed Wullie, whose body has not been discovered, but that he is the Body Parts Killer, both which Robertson believes are nonsense. Harvey Shine (Dustin Hoffman) works as a jingle writer for television commercials in Manhattan, a job not in keeping with his one-time aspiration to be a jazz composer and pianist. We see him at work and he is very good at what he does. However, his boss does not seem impressed with his latest output. As Harvey departs for London to attend his daughter Susan's wedding, his boss actually suggests that he spend more time there than he had originally planned. Harvey declines, making the point that he needs to be back for an upcoming pitch to an old client. His boss insists that it is being done by other musicians, and that Harvey's latest work was his last chance to keep his job. On the plane, Harvey tries to chat up a fellow passenger, but she is having none of it. He is left sitting there with egg on his face and we come to regard him as even more of a loser. Meanwhile, we witness the mildly strained relationship between Kate Walker (Emma Thompson), a single Londoner, and her mother, whose husband left years earlier. Kate tries to reassure her mother that despite being single, she may yet find a man. Further, Kate tells her mom to quit worrying about the new Polish neighbor who has moved in next door and seems to be stacking a lot of firewood. Upon arrival at Heathrow Airport in London, Harvey encounters Kate at her job collecting statistics from passengers as they pass through the terminals. She attempts to question him about his reasons for visiting the UK. Tired and anxious to get to his hotel, Harvey brusquely dismisses her when she approaches him to ask questions. Harvey heads for the hotel to check in and discovers that he is the first one to arrive. Upon calling his daughter to double check where everyone else is when they were all supposed to be staying together, he learns that his ex-wife Jean actually rented a house to accommodate family and friends from the States and he is the only one at the hotel. After a brief nap, he showers and hurriedly dresses. On the way to the rehearsal dinner in the taxi cab, he realizes the anti-shoplifting device is still attached to the sleeve of his jacket. And to make matter worse, he has worn a white suit (thinking this was requested) while all the other men wore black. During the meal, it becomes increasingly clear Harvey is considered a mere guest and the role of father of the bride has been delegated to Jean's husband Brian. To add insult to injury, Brian stands to give the toast, and recollects the vacation they all spent in Rome, and his stepson-in-law-to-be embraces him and calls him Dad. Just before leaving back to his hotel, when Harvey tells Susan (with whom he has shared a strained relationship since his divorce) that he will be attending the ceremony but not the subsequent reception because he needs to return to the States for an important meeting, she informs him she has asked Brian to give her away. Meanwhile, Kate is set up on a blind date by a well meaning co-worker that does not go well. When she returns to the table after taking yet another call from her mother, she discovers her younger date has invited some of his younger friends to join them. Feeling unwanted and excluded from the conversation, she eventually excuses herself and goes home. As it turns out, Kate's increasingly neurotic mother seems convinced that her Polish neighbor is some kind of murderer because she sees him toting strange looking, lumpy packages into a shed in the back yard. The following morning Harvey attends Susan's wedding, but heavy traffic delays his arrival back to Heathrow, and he misses his plane. When he calls his boss Marvin in NYC to inform him he will be returning a day later than planned and that he will try to get there as soon as possible, he is told that he is fired. In his glum mood, Harvey makes his way to the airport bar and starts slugging down scotch, determined to drown his sorrows. Kate is sitting in the lounge reading a novel and drinking wine when she notices Harvey. She makes a barb to him about the drinking being a big help to whatever is bothering him and he fires back about her reading a trashy novel and drinking chardonnay not being so much better. They gradually warm to each other over the course of their salads. After an awkward goodbye at the exit, where Harvey wistfully watches Kate walk away, he decides to follow her to the Heathrow Express and upon arrival at Paddington station, asks if he can walk her to her writing class on the South Bank. She accepts his offer and is pleased when he offers to meet her after class. As they stroll along the River Thames, Harvey mentions he is missing Susan's wedding reception, and Kate urges him to go. He finally relents, but only if she will accompany him. When Kate insists she is not properly dressed for such an occasion, Harvey buys her a dress and the two head to the Grosvenor House Hotel, where they are welcomed warmly by Susan and her new husband Scott. When the father of the bride is called upon to make a toast, Brian rises and begins to speak until Harvey taps his glass and reminds him who the real father of the bride is. He then delivers an eloquent speech that redeems him with his daughter and endears him to Kate. Following the reception, Harvey and Kate walk and talk until dawn. They exchange a single, gentle kiss and agree to meet again at noon at the same place, a cafe near a water park. They are both excited about the upcoming rendezvous, but after running up the hotel stairs too quickly, Harvey suffers an attack of arrhythmia! Paramedics rush him to the hospital, where he protests to doctors that he is fine and must leave to meet someone. The doctors insist that he must stay for further tests. Kate buys some flowers and does her makeup in anticipation of seeing Harvey again. She waits at the cafe where they agreed to meet, yet he is still in the hospital, unbeknownst to Kate. After a long time waiting, she leaves alone, crushed and rueful. Harvey immediately attempts to contact Kate after he is released from the hospital, but is surprised to receive a call from his ex-boss Marvin, who explains how his superiors like Harvey's latest work so much that he wants him to return to his job right away. Harvey pauses and then tells Marvin that he no longer wants the job. Kate visits her mother again and discovers that the Polish neighbor has left a rather large smoked ham. Turns out that he is not a killer after all, just a meat smoker. Kate then returns to her job taking surveys at the airport, and when Harry calls her there, she refuses to take his call. Harvey rushes to the airport to redeem himself with Kate but she has left for the day. Her workmates are suspicious of him at first but know that she likes him, and let him know that she is at her writing class. He tracks her down after class and reveals why he missed their rendezvous. Overly cautious about romance because of so many past disappointments, Kate initially resists his suggestion that they see what the future might bring them, but finally agrees to give things a chance. When she asks Harvey how it will work, he replies that he does not know, "But it will, I promise you that." As they walk away, Kate takes off her shoes to make her closer in height to the shorter Harry. He says, "I think you're my kind of girl." When he recalls that she never did ask him the questions from her airport survey, she asks for his name and residence, to which he replies, "I'm in transition." Over the end credits, we see that Kate's mom has gone to visit her Polish neighbor to thank him for the ham. The neighbor invites her to come into his house, and after some feigned hesitation, she agrees to enter.

Harold Crick (Will Ferrell) is an auditor for the Internal Revenue Service, living his entire life based on the timing of his wristwatch. He is given the job to audit an intentionally tax-delinquent baker, Ana Pascal (Maggie Gyllenhaal) to whom he is awkwardly attracted. On the same day, he begins hearing the voice of a woman that is Omnisciently narrating the events in his life, but he is unable to communicate with the voice. On his way home, Harold's watch stops working and he resets it using the time given by a bystander; the voice narrates "little did he know that this simple, seemingly innocuous act would result in his imminent death". Worried over this prediction, Harold turns to a psychiatrist (Linda Hunt) who attributes the voice to schizophrenia; though they also consider that if it is not schizophrenia and there really is a narrator, he should then visit an expert in literature. Crick visits Jules Hilbert (Dustin Hoffman), a university literature professor, and relates his story. Jules first comes to the same conclusion as the psychiatrist, as Harold's dull life is not something commonly seen in novels. However, Jules then recognizes aspects of a literary work in Harold's story ("little did he know"), and encourages him to help identify the author, first by determining if the work is a comedy or a tragedy. As Harold proceeds to audit Ana, the two begin to fall for each other, but when Harold refuses to accept cookies that Ana made for him on the grounds that they could be viewed as a bribe, Ana angrily tells him to leave, making Harold believe the story is a tragedy. On the advice of Jules, Harold spends the next day at home to try to control his own destiny and stop the plot of the book by doing absolutely nothing, but his apartment is partially demolished by a wrecking crew mistaking the building for an abandoned one. Jules then believes that since Harold cannot control the plot that has been set for him, he should accept that he will die and enjoy whatever time he has left to the fullest. Harold takes this to heart: he takes an extended vacation from work, develops his friendship with his co-worker Dave (Tony Hale), fulfills his dream of learning to play the guitar and starts to see Ana on a regular basis. Harold believes he may have mistaken his story and now reassesses it as a comedy. When he returns to Jules with this revelation, Harold inadvertently identifies the voice in his head from a television interview as noted author Karen (Kay) Eiffel (Emma Thompson). Jules, an admirer of Eiffel's work, reveals that every book she has written is about the main character's tragic death. Karen (who has been appearing throughout in a parallel story) has been struggling from writer's block for years and is currently researching numerous ways to have Crick die. Her publisher has sent an assistant, Penny Escher (Queen Latifah), to make sure the book gets completed (ironically, the book's title is "Death and Taxes", a snippet from a famous statement by Benjamin Franklin). Harold finds Eiffel through her tax records. When Karen learns that Harold is a real person and has experienced everything she's written, she is horrified by the thought that all of her previous books may have also resulted in the deaths of real people. She tells Harold she has finally written a draft of the ending and his death but has not typed it up yet; the pair realize that all the events in the book become true when she strikes the period key. Penny suggests Harold read the book and the drafted ending to get his opinion. Harold is unable to bring himself to read it and gives the manuscript to Jules to review. Jules confirms its excellence, labeling it as Karen's masterpiece, and makes clear that Harold's death is integral to its genius. Though Harold is deeply distressed over his fate, Jules comforts him by stating the inevitability of death: this one death, at least, will have a deeper meaning by completing the book. Harold reads the manuscript himself over the course of a day; he returns the manuscript to Karen, telling her the death she has written for him is "beautiful" and that she should keep it as it is. Accepting his fate, he spends one last night with Ana. The next day, Harold prepares to return to work after his vacation, despite Karen's voice narrating the fateful day as she types up her planned ending. Because Harold's watch is three minutes fast (owing to the imprecise time given to him when he reset his watch) he arrives at the bus stop early, and watches as a young boy on a bicycle ride in front of the arriving bus but falls. Karen continues to write, narrating as Harold leaps from the curb and pushes the child out of the way, saving the boy at the cost of being struck by the bus, however Karen is unable to complete the sentence confirming Harold's death. Harold wakes up to find himself in a hospital, severely injured but alive, Ana by his side. He learns that fragments of his wristwatch helped to block the right ulnar artery in his body after the collision, preventing him from bleeding to death. When Jules reads Karen's final manuscript, he notes that the story is weaker without Harold's death. Karen admits the flaw, although she points out that the story was meant to be about a man that dies unexpectedly; with Harold knowingly and willingly sacrificing himself, the story would have lost its tragic impact. In place of Harold, his wristwatch-Anthropomorphized throughout most of the film-is now the character who died tragically.

Set amid the frantic festivities of Christmas, eight London couples deal with love and the complications that come with it.

Austrian research geneticist Dr. Alex Hesse (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and his OB/GYN colleague Dr. Larry (Danny DeVito) Arbogast invent a fertility drug, "Expectane", designed to reduce the chances of a miscarriage. Alex says that the female body is miscarriage prone due to the body's natural tendency to reject foreign matter. The body mistakes the embryo as unwanted foreign substance and creates antibodies to fight and reject it. Expectane neutralizes the antibodies and leads to successful embryo attachment. The drug has been tested on a chimpanzee, who has had a history of miscarriages and is now 7 months pregnant due to her treatment with Expectane. Head of the University review board Noah Banes (Frank Langella) informs Larry that the FDA rejected the proposed drug after Alex and Larry's presentation. With the drug unapproved by the FDA, the colleagues are unable to test the drug and cannot continue their research. Banes asks Alex to empty his lab, which he refuses to do. Larry begs Banes that he has invested $300,000 in the development of the drug and asks for some slack. Banes has recruited geneticist Dr. Diana Reddin (Emma Thompson) and her ovum Cryogenics project to the University. Diana will set up her lab where Alex is resident currently. Larry notices that Diana carries an entire selection of frozen eggs for her experiments. Louise (Aida Turturro) is the receptionist at Larry's clinic. Alex plans to start over in Europe as he has no lab, no funding or any future in the USA. Larry suggests they can still perform the experiment, with Canadian firm Lyndon Pharmaceutical offering to fund them provided they find a volunteer. Alex questions the likelihood of a pregnant woman taking an unapproved drug, but Larry suggests omitting the volunteer's gender. Larry says that Moe the chimp went 5 months pregnant when put on Expectane. Larry convinces Alex to impregnate himself with an ovum code-named "Junior". Larry says that Alex only needs to carry the embryo through the first trimester, which will give their data and then they will terminate the pregnancy. Larry argues that many other scientists have tested their own vaccines and drugs on themselves. Larry promises that he can find an egg, and then proceeds to steal one frozen egg from Diana's Cryogenic container. The egg was labeled "Junior" by Diana. Larry fertilizes the egg using Alex's sperm and injects the egg into Alex's abdomen in the Peritoneal cavity. Larry lies to Alex that the egg belongs to a colleague, who got it through an anonymous harvest. That night, Alex dreams his potential offspring has his own face. Alex is staying with Larry at his house, during the protocol. The urine test indicates that Alex is pregnant. He is to take Expectane 6 times a day. As weeks go by, he complains to Larry of sore nipples, morning sickness, cramps, chats incessantly about walks, massages, and naps. Diana had shared her lab space with Alex as she felt bad for kicking him out. Alex started bonding with Diana and shared his physical discomfort with her. Contemplating fatherhood after watching television commercials, Alex breaks down sobbing. Larry visits a maternity convention where Lyndon Pharmaceuticals executives are attending. Larry promises them results within a week, which Banes overhears. Bane suspects that Larry is conducting human experimentation without authorization. Alex and Diana also attend the conference and develop a mutual attraction towards each other. When the time comes for Alex to end the experiment and release the results to Lyndon Pharmaceutical, he continues taking the drug and decides to carry the pregnancy to term. Larry had told Alex to stop taking Expectane, which would disrupt the embryo and it would be reabsorbed naturally into his body. 10 weeks later, Larry notices Alex's growing belly and realizes that he is still pregnant. Initially annoyed, Larry agrees to keep it hidden. Alex develops a romantic relationship with Diana. Banes finds that Larry and Alex are still buying Expectane components through Diana. Banes confronts Alex and Larry and wants to know if they are coloring outside the lines. Banes goes up to Alex's room and finds a supply of Expectane and deduces that there is a pregnancy in the house. Banes takes a sample and has it tested. The sample has high dosage of estrogen and Progesterone, consistent with someone preparing to undergo a sex change operation. Banes realizes that Alex is pregnant. Larry takes Diana out to dinner. Diana mentions that she also experimented on herself when she froze her own egg and labeled it Junior. Alex returns home and confronts Larry that he stole the egg from Diana and that it is her own egg. When Angela comes over to Larry's, she sees Larry touching Alex's belly and believes they are gay partners. Alex reveals his pregnancy to Angela (Pamela Reed), who also happens to be pregnant by Aerosmith's personal trainer. Larry is Angela's attending physician as per her request. Alex meets Diana at her lab and tells her the truth. Diana is stunned and angry when it is revealed that the "Junior" ovum is hers, and Banes attempts to take credit for the experiment. Banes says that the University has a contract with Alex, and any commercial applications of Alex's experiment are the property of the University. Alex manages to escape. Disguised as a woman, Alex hides in a retreat for expectant mothers, blaming his masculine appearance on Anabolic steroid use. Diana visits, telling him it does not matter who is pregnant because he is the father, and she is the mother. Larry reveals the experiment's data to Lyndon Pharmaceutical, who agree to partner with them. Alex experiences abdominal pain from the start of labor, calling for Larry and Diana. As Diana rushes to the resort, Larry tells a fellow doctor to prepare for an emergency c-section. A hospital staffer overhears and alerts Banes, who summons the media and the University Dean, hoping to take credit for the world's first pregnant man. Warned by a colleague, Larry creates a decoy for Alex to allow a private c-section. When Larry arrives, the news media only see the pregnant Angela, discrediting Banes, who is fired by the Dean. Diana and Alex enter the hospital by the fire escape, and he has an emergency c-section. Sent to keep Angela company in the waiting room, Diana finds her in labor and becomes her delivery coach. Alex gives birth to a healthy baby girl, and Larry announces the arrival to Diana, who is assisting Angela with contractions. Diana leaves Angela with Larry and rushes to see the baby, whom she and Alex name Junior. Larry delivers Angela's child, and they reconcile to raise the boy, Jake, as their own. One year later, the families all go on vacation together and celebrate the birthdays of Junior and Jake. Diana is pregnant with their second child, and Angela mentions wanting another baby but not wishing to endure pregnancy again; they all try to convince a reluctant Larry to carry the child.

Gerry Conlon, an Irishman, is wrongfully imprisoned with his father for a terrorist bombing. He struggles for fifteen years with the help of his attorney before finding justice.

Don Pedro, prince of Medina (Denzel Washington), his resentful brother Don John (Keanu Reeves), and his noblemen Claudio (Robert Sean Leonard) and Benedick (screenwriter/director Kenneth Branagh) return from war, ready for merriment and love. Claudio loves Hero (Kate Beckinsale), the young daughter of the nobleman Leonato (Richard Briers), but Benedick hates Beatrice (Emma Thompson), Leonato's beautiful, witty, but sharp-tongued niece, who hates him back. Claudio and Hero are soon engaged; as they prepare for their wedding, they decide, with the help of Don Pedro, to trick Benedick and Beatrice into confessing their true love for each other. The plan works without a hitch, but trouble comes in the form of Don John, who is jealous of his brother's power and of his affection for Claudio. Don John devises a scheme where one of his lieutenants will make love to Hero's maid Margaret (Imelda Staunton) at Hero's window the night before the wedding--and call her Hero. Don John takes Don Pedro and Claudio to Leonato's house, where they see the encounter and are convinced the woman is Hero. The next day Claudio disgraces Hero publicly at the wedding and refuses to marry her. She faints and Leonato is persuaded to pretend that she is dead until the situation is sorted out. The foolish warden Dogberry (Michael Keaton) manages to arrest Don John's lieutenants and they confess to the plot. Claudio is crushed when he learns that he killed Hero with his false accusations. He begs Leonato to punish him and Leonato tells him his punishment is to marry his (other) niece, who closely resembles Hero. Claudio agrees but first spends a night mourning for Hero and proclaiming her innocence. Don John escapes Medina. The next morning Claudio marries the supposed niece, who removes her veil to reveal that she is Hero. They are very happy but Benedick and Beatrice almost break up when they discover they were tricked into admitting their love. In the end, Don John is arrested and brought back to face punishment, Benedick and Beatrice marry, and all dance around Leonato's garden singing "Noddy noddy."

In 1958 postwar Britain, Mr James Stevens (Anthony Hopkins), the butler of Darlington Hall, receives a letter from Miss Kenton (Emma Thompson), who worked with him as housekeeper during the years prior to the Second World War. Lord Darlington (James Fox) the Earl of Darlington, has died a broken man, his reputation destroyed by his prior to Second World War support of Nazi Germany. His stately country manor has been sold to a retired American Congressman, Mr. Lewis (Christopher Reeve). The manor was huge and did not receive a buyer (as nobody wanted a manor belonging to a "traitor") and the plan was to break it up and sell the stone for 5000 pounds. But Lewis stepped in and saved the estate at the auction, by buying the best art pieces of the manor and the manor itself. In her letter, Kenton reveals that her marriage has failed and that she is nostalgic for the days when she worked at the house. Stevens, now one of the few remaining servants from the Darlington era, goes to visit Miss Kenton, to persuade her to return to service. Stevens takes permission from Lewis, who allows him the use of his precious Daimler. Steven says that the manor is woefully understaffed, and Kenton would make a splendid addition before the arrival of Lewis' family from the states. Flashback to the 1930's when Kenton arrived as housekeeper. At the time, Darlington Hall was frequented by many politicians of the interwar period, men who decided important affairs of state while there. Stevens, loyal and perfectionist, calm and efficient, had to manage the household so that the servants seemed almost invisible, and he took great pride in his skills and his profession. Stevens interviewed Kenton and explained that there were to be no gentlemen callers and no consorting with the rest of the staff. He clashed with Miss Kenton, his equal in the household hierarchy, but displayed only understated irritation with her and others. Indeed, his utter focus and emotional repression were most fully displayed when his own father Mr William Stevens (Peter Vaughan), was also employed at the manor as an employee. Stevens refuses to acknowledge that his father, now an under-butler, is no longer able to perform his duties. Stevens takes exception when Kenton addresses his father by his Christian name, but Kenton defends saying that it is normal custom for under butlers to be called by their first name. Kenton points out Stevens Sr. failings to Stevens on multiple occasions, and on one Lord Darlington himself saw sweat from Stevens Sr falling into the tea he was serving the guests. Stevens only accepted the issue when Stevens Sr. tripped and fell flat on the ground while serving tea to Darlington and his guests. Darlington tells Stevens that the upcoming conference is crucial for the fate of Europe and asks him to remove Stevens Sr. from the serving staff. Stevens Sr. reacts badly when he is assigned to cleaning duties at the manor. As the conference begins, Stevens finds his father collapsed with his cleaning tools in one of the service corridors of the manor. The doctor tells Stevens that his father is dying. Displaying total professionalism, Stevens carries on as his father lies dying during Darlington's conference of like-minded fascist-sympathizing British and European aristocrats including French Ambassador Dupont D'Ivry (Michael Lonsdale) and Lewis. Lord Darlington used his influence to broker the policy of appeasement towards Nazi Germany, based on his belief that Germany had been unfairly treated by the Treaty of Versailles following World War I. Darlington proposes allowing the rearmament of Germany, saying that a strong Germany is in Europe's favor. He irritated Congressman Lewis, one of the dignitaries at a conference, who argued in favor of the foreign policy being conducted by "professionals" rather than by "gentlemen amateurs". While Stevens was attending guests at dinner, Kenton informs him that his father passed away. Miss Kenton was equally efficient and strong-willed but warmer and less repressed. Relations between the two eventually warmed and Kenton even teased Stevens. She catches him reading a romance novel, which he explains is to improve his vocabulary, asking her not to invade his privacy again. It becomes clear that she had fallen in love with him, and perhaps he with her, though his feelings are left ambiguous. She tried to break through the wall, but Stevens' coldness was too formidable. After reading the work of Houston Stewart Chamberlain, Lord Darlington commanded that two German-Hebrew maids should be dismissed, considering their employment inappropriate. Stevens carried out the order, but Miss Kenton almost resigned in protest, fearing that the girls would have to return to Germany. Her own need for employment caused her to avoid following through. Darlington later regretted his decision and asked Stevens to reinstate the maids, but they could not be located. Later Stevens is unable to answer an aristocratic guest's questions on global trade and politics, which the aristocrat claims to demonstrate the lower classes' ignorance and inability to govern themselves. Finally, Kenton struck up a relationship with co-worker Tom Benn (Tim Pigott-Smith) and married him, leaving the house just before the outbreak of World War II. Before her departure, she insulted Stevens, clearly out of distress that he had never expressed any emotional interest in her, but he still refused to be moved. When she cried in frustration, the only response he could muster was to call her attention to a domestic task. Lord Darlington's godson, journalist Reginald Cardinal (Hugh Grant), arrives on the day of a secret meeting at Darlington Hall between the British Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain (Frank Shelley), and the German ambassador, Joachim Von Ribbentrop (Wolf Kahler). Appalled by his godfather's role in seeking appeasement for Nazi Germany, Cardinal tells Stevens that Darlington is being used by the Nazis, but Stevens feels it is not his place to judge his employer. Darlington eventually died a broken man, his reputation destroyed after he had been denounced a traitor in the Daily Mail. En route to meeting Kenton in 1958, Stevens is mistaken for the gentry at a pub. Doctor Carlisle, a local GP, helps him refuel the Daimler and deduces that he is actually a manservant, asking his thoughts about Lord Darlington's actions. Denying having even met him, Stevens later admits to having served and respected him, but Darlington confessed that his Nazi sympathies had been misguided and naive. Stevens declares that, although Lord Darlington was unable to correct his error, he is attempting to correct his own. He meets Kenton, who has separated from her husband and runs a boarding house on the coast. She and Stevens reminisce that Lord Darlington died from a broken heart after suing a newspaper for libel, losing the suit and his reputation, and Stevens mentions that Cardinal was killed in the war. Kenton, now Mrs Benn, declines to resume her position at Darlington Hall, wishing to remain near her pregnant daughter and, despite years of unhappiness, thinking about going back to her husband. Stevens supposes they may never meet again, and they part fondly but are both quietly upset, Miss Kenton visibly tearful as her bus pulls away. Stevens returns to Darlington Hall, where Lewis asks if he remembers the old days, and Stevens replies that he was too busy serving. The two men free a pigeon from the house, and it flies away, leaving Stevens and Darlington Hall far behind.

New Years Eve, 1982 In England, we are introduced to Peter Morton (Stephen Fry), Andrew Benson (Kenneth Branagh), Roger Charleston (Hugh Laurie), Mary (Imelda Staunton), Maggie (Emma Thompson), and Sarah (Alphonsia Emmanuel), members of a Cambridge University acting troupe, who perform a silly and unconventional farewell revue for Peter's father (Richard Briers) and his unresponsive conservative guests at a New Year's Eve dinner ushering in the new year. They gather in the kitchen afterward and take a photograph to commemorate their last performance together. Ten years later; December 30, 1992. Peter has inherited his father's estate after Lord Morton's passing some months earlier. Uncertain if he will keep the mansion or sell it, Peter has invited his five friends for a New Year's Eve party for the weekend and convinces his stern housekeeper, Vera (Phyllida Law), to stay until the new year. Andrew, now a television writer/producer in Hollywood, California, flies to England with his American wife, Carol Benson (Rita Rudner), a famous actress and the star of his television comedy program. Roger and Mary are married TV commercial writers/producers living in suburban Birmingham, and she is worried about leaving their infant son, Ben, with a nanny. Frumpy Maggie, a struggling writer/publisher, asks an old lady neighbor of hers to look after her flat as she leaves pictures of herself for her pet cat, who appears unconcerned over her departure. On a train to Peter's estate, Sarah, now a costume designer living in London, has sex with her new lover, Brian (Tony Slattery), a stage actor that she works with in their cabin. The train arrives at the station where Sarah and Brian disembark and meet with Maggie, who has just arrived on the same train. Maggie, Sarah and Brian are soon greeted by Vera's teenage son, Paul (Alex Lowe), a chauffeur and handyman, who drives them to the estate, arriving just as Andrew and Carol arrive in a rented limo. Soon after, Roger and Mary arrive in their own car. Right after they arrive, Mary phones their nanny to check in. As everyone settles into their rooms, Sarah and Brian have sex once again, while Roger and Mary quarrel over whether she calls home too often. Meanwhile, Carol investigates Vera's cooking. Dismayed by the high-calorie rich food, Carol attempts to bribe Vera to accommodate her diet, to no avail. While Maggie and Andrew stroll the grounds, she reveals her lack of a love life. However, her company published a self-help book titled 'You May Already Know Your Mate', which claims friends can be marriage material. Although Maggie questions whether Peter is homosexual, she thinks he is the right man for her and plans to help him realize they should be together. At dinner, Carol and Sarah's boyfriend, Brian, both outsiders, are introduced to everyone, and Carol discovers that Brian is the only person who has seen her television show. As Peter toasts his friends, Brian and Sarah rudely ignore the others to focus on each other. She apologizes, claiming that she and Brian have not been together for very long and they get carried away with sex. As Mary excuses herself to call home yet again, Brian questions Roger about his work and learns that he and Mary are the top commercial jingle writers in England. When Mary returns, Brian asks if they use their twin children in their TV commercials. Mary rushes off crying and Brian learns that one of Roger and Mary's twins recently died. Later, as the friends drink coffee, Mary answers the telephone and announces that Brian's wife is calling. While he takes the call, Sarah reveals that he is married and has a child, but plans to divorce his wife. Although Sarah insists that Brian is different than her previous lovers, Mary is certain she is repeating her old pattern, and reminds everyone that Sarah was in love with Andrew until he dumped his girlfriend and asked Sarah to marry him, at which point she lost interest. This is news to Carol, who excuses herself. Brian returns and announces that he has just left his wife by telling her everything. Feeling vindicated, Sarah hugs him. Andrew joins his wife upstairs and Carol notes they planned to work out the difficulties in their marriage this weekend, and wonders why he never mentioned his past dalliance with Sarah. When he rejoins his friends downstairs, the group sings together again. Brian, left out of the singing, just watches. Minutes later, Mary receives a telephone call from the babysitter relating that her son has a slight cold, but the doctor says he is fine. Mary wants to leave, but Maggie convinces her to stay for the night and check on her son in the morning. Upstairs, Roger admits to Mary that although he still loves her, he has thought of ending their marriage because she blames him for their twin #1 son's death. Mary sobs that she knows she has been unreasonable, and Roger hugs her, promising to stay wit her. Meanwhile, Sarah is upset that Brian did not consult her before leaving his wife, noting they have only known each other for two weeks, and claims to be too tired to have sex with him. Later that night, Maggie goes to Peter's room, disrobes, and asks him to impregnate her. Peter is shocked and immediately turns her down. It is here that Peter reveals that he is bisexual, although he does not sleep with either men or women anymore. However, he insists that if he were having sex, Maggie would be high on his wish list. Embarrassed, Maggie begs him not to tell anyone. Downstairs in the kitchen, Maggie gets a drink and discovers Carol binge-eating leftover food. Maggie shares the story of her embarrassing visit to Peter's room, but believes there might still be hope since Peter is not sleeping with anyone. Carol insists Maggie is attractive beneath her frumpiness and offers to do a makeover, which Maggie accepts. The next morning, Carol leads Maggie into the kitchen, where Peter and Andrew admire her new look. Hearing sounds of lovemaking overhead, they assume it is Sarah and Brian. However, when Sarah enters the kitchen, everyone smiles as they realize the lovers are Roger and Mary. A little later, Carol receives a long-distance phone call from her agent in Hollywood and announces to Andrew and everyone else that she has been offered a film role which starts shooting right away on the day after New Years Day. Afterwards, Andrew asks if she will stay to work on their marriage, but she does not believe he will try. Outside, Sarah flirts with Vera's son, Paul, as he chops wood, but his attention is diverted when the newly made-over Maggie joins them. When Brian wanders outside, Sarah ignores him and rushes inside for a drink. She discovers that Andrew, a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, has abandoned his sobriety and is drinking whiskey. Andrew confides in Sarah that he thought his marriage to Carol would improve when they both stopped drinking, but everything became more complicated. He tells Sarah that she is addicted to romance, not reality, and that is why she abandons her lovers when they become available. A minute later, Sarah flirts with Andrew and as she kisses him, Carol walks into the room, sees them and becomes angry. She tells Andrew that she was going to refuse the film role, but now plans to leave again to catch the first plane back to California. Sarah heads upstairs, and sees Brian crying on the telephone as he talks to his son. When Brian joins her, Sarah admits the commitment issue is her problem and he should go back to his family. As she leaves, Sarah hears moans coming from Maggie's bedroom, and opens the door to discover Maggie having sex with Paul. Meanwhile, Roger and Mary continue to make love, and when the telephone rings, he wonders who is calling and Mary insists someone will let them know if it is for them. Downstairs, Peter helps Vera in the kitchen and learns she plans to retire. He wants her to stay if he keeps the house, but she declines because she disapproves of his lifestyle. Carol and Andrew have an argument where she declares that his unhappiness with himself is their primary marital problem, and she quickly packs up and leaves to return to Hollywood alone as the rented limo picks her up and drives away. Shortly afterword, Brian's wife picks him up in her car and they speed away. At dinner that evening, Roger and Mary join the others and admit they made love all day in their bedroom and only telephoned home twice. Andrew drunkenly joins the group where he profanely berates his friends, and turns his vitriol toward Peter, wondering if he invited them because everyone was having a difficult year and Peter wanted to "save" them. Here, Peter reveals he invited them because he wanted his closest friends to know that he was diagnosed as being HIV positive six months ago. Peter's sour revelation stuns everyone into heartbreaking silence as the midnight hour is upon them. As the clock strikes 12 midnight, Peter raises his glass and asks them to toast the new year of 1993. Peter's friends, Andrew, Roger, Mary, Maggie, and Sarah hesitate until Vera enters and toasts Peter. The others join the toast, and Andrew apologizes to everyone for his rude behavior. Peter reveals he does not have AIDS yet, and it is possible that a cure might be discovered in time to save him. Peter joins Vera in the kitchen and she asks why he did not tell her that he is HIV positive. Peter explains that he thought she, a highly religious person, would consider it a deserved punishment for his bisexual lifestyle, but Vera insists she has loved him since he was a child. In the final scene, Peter rejoins the others and brings out their funny group picture from 1982 (taken in the opening scene). The friends laugh as they sing together once again as the film ends.

When a mute, amnesiac woman turns up at an orphanage, private eye Mike Church looks into her identity but ends up finding a connection with a murder that occurred forty years ago.
