Bharat is the quintessential aam aadmi, who lives in Bhopal. He is a cashier at a bank and like all bankers, has a trusted sidekick his scooter. He is also a part-time actor, and portrays the role of Lord Hanuman at the local Ramleela skit. His family consists of his wife, Nisha, a schoolteacher and his father, Shivnarayan, a patriotic, idealistic man, who dreams of a corrupt-free nation. Then there is Amita, the unwanted guest, who is a call centre employee. She is a pretty young thing, which is enough reason for Nisha to be slightly insecure about her marriage. Nisha is ambitious for her husband, and would like him to be promoted from cashier to manager at the bank. Bharat, however, has other goals. He wants to be Ram, the protagonist in Ramleela. Sattu Tripathi, an extremely bad actor, gets to portray Ram, without opposition, because he is the younger brother of the politician, MLA Manku Tripathi. Both the Tripathi brothers dislike Bharat, for different reasons. Sattu is overshadowed by Bharats superior acting skills on stage, leading to a rivalry between the two. Manku, on the other hand, is miffed with Bharat, because the extra room in the latters house is now used as a re-election campaign room by Mohanlal, Mankus adversary. And then one day, Bharats table-fan gets stolen. The police constable, Parshuram Khushwaah tells Bharat that the local paanwala, Bacchu Gulkand, can testify in court that it was none other than Chunnu Farishta, burglar par excellence, who is responsible for the crime.

Suraj Singh (Anil Kapoor) is in love with the beautiful and wealthy Komal (Karisma Kapoor). Komal leaves her husband with her father. She delivers a baby boy but Yashpal wants to make sure that the one thing that can bring his daughter and Suraj together be eliminated immediately. He hires hit men to kill the baby but Suraj manages to get away with his son. They move to a unknown place and he raises his son with help from the villagers. Suraj later meets Vaijanti (Shilpa Shetty), an eccentric fisher woman who his son sees as a mother and friend. Vaijanti begins to love Suraj and hopes that he feels the same way. Komal, depressed and lonely, spots her son with Suraj. When confronted with the news of her son's death, Gayetri loses control and with the help of a corrupt doctor, Ugranarayan has Gayetri committed to a mental hospital, where the doctor, Dr. Neelkanth (Alok Nath) inflicts shock treatment and other tortures on the brain of Gayetri, thus rendering her a virtual vegetable. Several years pass by, and then one day Gayetri escapes from her tormentors. Then begin the sudden deaths of Ugranarayan, his family, and his goons. She herself has 6 sons named after each of the days of the week; one more child would be one too many. Kaamesh Singh, on his release from prison, turns his sister-in-law against his wife, by implying that his wife is having an affair with her husband. Ram's wife is so angry about his infidelity and swears vengeance against her sister. This sets the stage for the killing of Kaamesh Singh. How will this love triangle be resolved?

Vijay and her dad want Laxmi to marry Anand, which she refuses. Chandu has fallen into bad company of a criminal boss (Prem Chopra) and his sidekick Kitty (Komila Virk). Unknowingly Chandu assaults his very own father, and kidnaps his younger sister to satisfy the boss. Saroj is determined to honor the marriage, but Vijay is not. Will these two ever get together? 'Lakshmi Bhavan' is sold to none other than Chander himself for 25 Lakhs, and Rajjan moves to the outhouse. Soon Chander starts to liven things up including drinking alcohol and having lavish parties with dancing girls which does not auger very well with Rajjan - who had always treated this mansion as a holy place. Preeti lives a wealthy lifestyle in Bombay along with her widower dad, Heerachand, and is a medical student. A family experiences changes after a movie star moves in next to their house. While Shankar teaches music in a college, Ram is a Court Clerk, and Kanhaiya a Salesman. The trio hand over their monthly earnings to their father who runs the household stringently - often comically inflicting 'school-like' punishment even on adults. Their lifestyle changes dramatically after Parvati, Sita and Radha find out that movie star, Sheela Devi, has moved in next to their house. They decide to invite her over, and she accepts and the trio set about to borrow money, jewelry, renovate the house, buy/lease new furniture, even learn English - in their attempt to impress the actress. After the passing of their parents, Devraj lives with his much younger brother, Ramu, in a small town in India. He gets married to Bindya, who moves in along with her mom, and brother, Raju. Devraj, who works with Rai Saheb Kedarnath, gets a promotion as a Government Contractor, and they move into a bigger house. Years later, Raju and Ramu have grown up, and Bindya's mom has passed on. While Raju has taken to petty crime and bad company, Ramu is more focused on his studies and has good sober habits. Devraj would like Raju to get married to Rama, Kedarnath's daughter, but he subsequently finds out that she has fallen in love with Ramu. This news is met with anger by Raju, who swears to avenge this humiliation. Devraj's step-mother, Mrs. Ramnath, and her daughter, Nandini, move in with them - thus ending their idyllic lifestyle - with Devraj suspecting Bindya of having an affair with their cook, Chandan, and Bindya thinking that Devraj is having an affair with Nandini. The year is 1951, India is a free country, and Hariram lives a poor lifestyle along with his wife, Bela, and a young son, Rattan. He is in debt, but continues to borrow money so that he could provide a better life for his family. On the occasion of Diwali, he borrows some more money, returns home laden with gifts, fire-crackers, and sweetmeats, and together they celebrate. That night a snake enters their hut and bites Bela, killing her, leaving both father and son devastated, so much so that Hariram takes to alcohol, loses his job, and is unable to re-pay his loan. His moneylender assaults Rattan, and an enraged Hariram threatens to kill him. That night the moneylender is killed, and the Police arrest Hariram, he is tried in court, found guilty, and sentenced to be hanged. With the help of a pickpocket named Ghasita, Rattan finds out that his father is innocent, and both set out to travel to Delhi to meet the Indian Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru so that Hariram can be freed. On the way there, Ghasita gets run-over by a truck, but before dying gives a written statement to Rattan, thumb-printing it with his blood. Now alone, Rattan travels all the way by foot to Delhi's Dariya Ganj, and assisted by some street urchins, he hopes to meet Nehru - all in vain. Hariram a poor labourer loved his wife and son Rattan so much that he lavished them with all the comforts of life even though it meant he was constantly in debt. Harimam's life fell apart when he lost his wife. So grief stricken was he that he even lost his job due to poor attendance. Misery drove him to seek solace in alcohol. When drunken Hariram reached home he found his son crying as an evil loan shark Sethji had beaten him up. In a fit of rage Hariram went to Sethji's house and nearly killed him but for the timely intervention of Mukunda who also owed Sethji money. Hariram left, but not before threatening to kill Bhola Seth. That night while Hariram was asleep next to where his wife had been cremated and Mukunda broke into Sethjis house to steal his valuables. When Sethji tried to stop him he killed Sethji. Hariram was found guilty for this murder and sent to Delhi to await his death sentence. His distressed son, Rattan, not knowing how to save his innocent father meets Ghaseeta a pickpocket who had seen Hariram asleep in the crematorium. He relates the story to the police but they question his credibility. Uneducated Ghaseeta decides to go to Delhi with Rattan to plea Hariram's case before Pt. Nehru. Mukunda fears for his life and follows in pursuit of the child and his witness. Although a graduate in Arts, Shanta agrees to get married to a much lesser educated widowed businessman, Ratanlal, who has a son, Mithu, from his first marriage, and re-locates to live with him, his brothers; Ramesh, Rajan, & Baldev, and an aunt. Ratanlal permits her to let her child-widowed sister, Lata, to also live with them. Shanta soon earns the respect and love of everyone in the family. Ramesh gets married to Advocate Motilal's daughter, Tara, while Rajan gets married to Mangala, who is Munshiram's daughter. After these marriages, misunderstandings crop up, generally generated by Mangala, so much so that Tara joins forces with her, forcing the brothers to separate from each other, with Ratanlal dividing the property and business equally amongst them, and re-locating in a small village house, while Ramesh now lives with Tara and her brother, Jeevan and his wife. Rajan does not get along with Mangala, takes to alcohol in a big way, stops his medical studies and joins the army, and Baldev re-locates to Bombay.
