One ordinary day, the Chennai city police commissioner Raghava Maraar (Mohanlal) receives a threatening call on his mobile from a guy (Kamal Hassan), who claims that he has placed five bombs in various parts of the city. The veracity of the caller`s claim is confirmed when the cops find a bag with a RDX bomb at the Anna Salai police station. The anonymous caller wants five hard core terrorists to be freed -- If not, he threatens blasts at various locations in Chennai where he has concealed the bombs. The chief secretary (Lakshmi) on the orders of Chief Minister has given a Maraar a free hand. Maraar and his crack team of officers, led by a daring brooding cop Arif Khan (Ganesh Venkatram), gets ready to hand over the terrorists to the anonymous caller at an airfield. Further unfolds the stunning climax.

The Police Commissioner of Chennai, Raghavan Maraar, receives a call from an unnamed man who threatens to detonate bombs across the city if he doesn`t release four terrorists who he arrested years ago. A small-town cook moves to London to earn a living, but from his employer's sudden death to the immigration officials on his trail, plans soon go sour. Ramji Tiwari and his sister, Parvati, had their parents pass away at an early age. Ramji is a skilled cook, and is familiar with all aspects of vegetarian cooking. He arranges Parvati's marriage with the Mishra family, promises to pay a large sum of dowry, which he manages to get by promising to get married to a wealthy man's daughter. On the day of Parvati's marriage, he finds out that his betrothed has eloped with her true lover, no dowry is coming in for Parvati's in-laws, shocked he goes to confide in Mishra, the father-in-law, who sarcastically gives him time to accumulate the money as well as a car for his son. A wedding guest, Pandey, is pleased with Ramji's cooking and offers him a job with his U.K.-based cousin, Vakil "Vicky" Chaubey, which Ramji reluctantly accepts. He readies himself to travel to London, gets all the relevant documents, attends a flight - where he does cause some hilarious chaos, and finally lands on U.K.'s soil. It is here he finds out that Vicky Chaubey is no more, his papers are all invalid, and he must find employment before he is deported from the country. He does find employment with Guru, his wife, and their handicapped son, who run a restaurant, who are pleased with him, and want him to stay, therefore they arrange his marriage of convenience with a young woman named Samira alias "Sammy". So from Ramji, his name is changed to Robert, from Lord Bajrang Bali he must now worship Lord Jesus Christ, wear tight underwear instead of "kacchas", he is then married in a formal church ceremony, and goes to live with Sammy in her house which she shares with her grandmother. It is then he finds out that the marriage is only temporary, at the most 3 months, in order so that Sammy can get married to Jay Kapoor, her lover; Not receiving any dowry from Ramji, Parvati has been turned out of the Mishra house and is living with her lover, Pappu; and the London Immigration Authorities are conducting an investigation that may well result in Ramji's being arrested, held, and then deported. —rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com)

The film starts with Angela Kathamuthu (Rohini) and her cameraman in Central Jail interviewing prisoners serving life imprisonment and awaiting the death sentence. She meets Kothala Thevar (Pasupathy) who is serving a life sentence. He tells his version of the story that led to his conviction. According to him the root cause of the problem is Virumaandi (Kamal Haasan) - the happy go lucky rogue. His support to Kothala Thevar in his clash against Nallama Naicker (Napoleon) brings about a bonding between the two. Annalakshmi (Abhirami), the niece of Thevar falls for Virumaandi. Thevar with an eye on the fertile land owned by Virumaandi does not object to the romance. According to Thevar, Annalakshmi was abducted by Virumaandi and raped. A clash between Virumaandi and Thevar takes places in which 24 innocent people are killed. Now it's Virumaandi's turn to tell his version of the story. He tells of how he fell in love with Annalakshmi and of her influence on him. She taught him to apologize and that forgiveness is a virtue. A clash at the Panchayata infuriates Annalakshmi and she asks Virumaandi to apologize to the elders whom he insulted. He goes to apologize but Thevar and his men, thinking he has gone to take revenge, come in groups and hack down innocents to death. Thevar uses his clout to get out of the murder charge but Virumaandi who was involved in the bloodbath is disturbed because he had to lie to save Thevar and his kin. As part of the penance he wills his land for the villagers. Annalakshmi asks him to marry her and leave the village. He marries her at the village temple and goes away in the night with the girl and stays with a relative. Thevar's men come and abduct Annalakshmi and forcibly get her married to Thevar's nephew. This is to ensure that Annalakshmi's property does not go to Virumaandi. Annalakshmi commits suicide. Virumaandi takes revenge by hacking to death Thevar's family. Thevar escapes. Nallama Naicker gives refuge to Virumaandi and sends him off to Chennai. Thevar and his men ask Nallama Naicker to hand over Virumaandi. A battle ensues in which Nallama Naicker is killed. The case goes to court. Virumaandi turns up in court. He finds all evidence is against him. He is convicted of having raped Annalakshmi and killing her and later on killing 26 men of Thevar who inquired into the rape. Angela Kathamuthu's cameraman discreetly shoots the deputy jailor conspiring with wardens and convicts to bump off the chief jailor (Nassar). A revolt among the jail staff leads to a jail break, the jailor being stabbed and Virumaandi saving the vital evidence and Angela from the deputy jailor and his henchmen. Anbe Sivam tells the story of an unexpected road journey undertaken by two men of contrasting personalities, Nallasivam and Anbarasu.

When a stuntman Pammal Kalyana Sambandham alias P.K.S and a reputed surgeon Dr. Janaki come across each other at his younger brother Anand's and her best friend Malathi's elopement, they instantly develop a dislike for each other. They both have a very low opinion of the opposite gender, and also refuse to believe in the concept of marriage. Sambandham humorously often censors his middle name "Kalyana" as it means "marriage". Janaki, in particular, hates Sambandham for his uncouth manners and language. She gets Sambandam arrested when he argues with her at the police station over Anand and Malathi's marriage. Sambandham is eventually released on bail. Anand and Malathi's marriage soon turns rocky as Malathi feels that Anand had lied to her over a job assignment in Australia before they had eloped. On the advice's of Janaki, Malathi harasses Anand at every opportunity and makes him do the household work. On hearing about Anand's plight, Sambandham decides to fix the relationship by "hooking up" Anand with a woman named Vanaja in order to make Malathi jealous and a more caring and dutiful wife to Anand. But, unfortunately for Anand, Janaki makes Malathi to believe that Anand is cheating on her and forces her to file for divorce. Meanwhile, Janaki tries to get Sambandham into trouble by barging into a movie shoot involving Sambandham and claiming that he is "involved" in animal cruelty since he is using a bull and a snake as part of the movie. In the chaos which was accidentally created by Janaki as she accidentally throws the snake on to the bull's head, the bull goes mad, the snake gets killed and the bull gores Sambandham in his stomach when he was trying save Janaki from the bull as it was trying to attack her. Janaki performs an emergency surgery on him and saves his life, but during the surgery, her prized possession (a wristwatch gifted to her by her aunt) falls into his stomach, which is detected by the X-Ray. She pretends to become close with Sambandham, with the intention to somehow sedate him and perform the surgery again to retrieve the watch. Sambandham, who is unaware that Janaki's watch is in his stomach due to a mix-up with another patient's X-Ray, mistakes Janaki's romantic overtures to be genuine, and falls in love with her. He also inadvertently foils all her plans to sedate him. Eventually, Sambandham provides another shock to Janaki; they are to be engaged at his grandfather's house. During the engagement ceremony, Janaki finally manages to sedate Sambandham and retrieve her watch. Following the surgery, Janaki reveals the truth to Sambandham and ends their engagement, leaving Sambandham heartbroken. Sambandham's troubles increase when he realizes that his grandfather had signed a legal document transferring his lodge to him once he is married. When his grandfather finds out that Janaki canceled the engagement, he suffers a massive heart attack and dies. Meanwhile, Malathi and Anand manage to reconcile and get back together, canceling their divorce. Janaki feels guilty over being responsible for Sambandham's grandfather's death. She also finds out that Sambandham had decided to transfer the ownership of the lodge to her and convert it to an orphanage if they had got married, and on this revelation, she realizes that she has fallen in love with him. She decides to confess her love to Sambandham, but instead she inadvertently convinces him to marry his relative, a weightlifter Rajeshwari alias Raji, within the next two days, as he would lose the possession of the lodge if he doesn't marry by then. However, it turns out that Raji has no interest in the marriage and is in love with a Malayali boy. In a hilarious climax, Sambandham, Janaki, Anand and Malathi help Raji in eloping with her boyfriend, and Sambandham and Janaki too elope as well, thus ensuring that the lodge remains under Sambandham's ownership.

A neurotic Sri Lankan patient crashes his psychotherapist's family vacation in Kodaikanal. Thenali (Kamal) is a traumatized Sri Lankan Tamil, who is beset by a variety of elaborate phobias. Prem (Salman Khan) is married to the loving yet traditional Pooja (Karishma Kapoor), and together they have two children Pinky (Baby Karishma) and Rinku (Master Shahrukh). Pooja is a dedicated wife, but as a result she is engrossed in house duties and has less time for her husband Prem. Prem tries to spend time with Pooja by taking her out for movies or for a dinner, but Pooja says that things were different before marriage and now both of them have responsibilities. One day, Rupali Walia (Sushmita Sen) arrives at Prem's office to give an interview for the role of a model assignment. Rupali worked with her photographer Deepak, who was in love with her, but Rupali tells him that she only considers him to be a good friend. Rupali tells Deepak that she hopes to marry a millionaire with a huge mansion, cars and servants. Prem signs Rupali exclusively for his agency for 3 years. As Prem cannot spend time with Pooja, he keeps running into Rupali everywhere and they end up spending time with each other. Prem and Rupali are attracted to each other and ultimately, they fall in love. Rupali doesn't know that Prem is lying to her and that he has a family. Rupali is much preferable to Prem due to her modern lifestyle and fashionable choices, as compared to Pooja. Prem takes Rupali to Switzerland for a photo shoot, but his mom Sushila (Himani Shivpuri) forces him to take Pooja as well. Prem convinces Pooja not to come due to the expenses involved which he estimates to be Rs 15 Lakhs. In Switzerland Prem meets Lakhan (Anil Kapoor) and Lovely (Tabu). Lakhan is family friends with Prem's mother and knows that if he sees Rupali, he will report it straight to his mother. As luck would have it Lovely befriends Rupali, but Rupali doesn't say that she is dating Prem. From Lovely, Rupali hears about Pooja Bhabhi. Prem explains that he has a dead brother who passed away in a car accident, and a widow Bhabhi and her 2 kids, whom Lovely and Lakhan keep referring in their discussions. Prem says that his mother is very orthodox, and this is why she never allowed his Bhabhi to get married again. As luck would have it, Prem and Lakhan are staying at the same hotel. Lakhan is a doctor, he finds out the truth, when Prem has a back spasm in his room with Rupali and Lakhan is called upon to treat him. When Lovely meets Rupali, she tells him that Prem is married and has 2 kids. When Rupali confronts Prem, Prem claims that he married Pooja under pressure as Pooja is a mentally sick person and effectively Prem has a non-existent marriage. This conversation is recorded on Billu's (Master Varun) camera accidentally (Billu is Lakhan and Lovely's son). Prem returns to India with Rupali and gifts her a mansion very close to his existing place where he lives with his family. Rupali is ecstatic and Prem even gifts her a car. Now Prem alternates between spending with Pooja and with Rupali. Prem tells Pooja that he is going for a long walk, and she makes him take their dog named Tiger along for company. This way, Tiger also sees Rupali's mansion. At home, Pooja watches the video with Lakhan and Lovely and sees this particular section where Prem and Rupali hug each other. Lakhan manages the situation by saying that Prem was harassed by Rupali and Prem was not at all interested in her. Pooja still confronts Prem, but Prem reminds her that it was Pooja who made him cancel her tickets. Pooja is ashamed when Prem says that she is doubting his character. Back at home, On Karva Chauth, a religious ceremony observed by married couples, Pooja discovers Prem at Rupali's house. Prem had gifted Rupali a house very close to his own and Rupali had insisted that Prem spends Karva Chauth with her. Pooja's dog, who had been to Rupali's earlier drags Pooja to her home and the truth is revealed to Pooja. She asks Prem to choose between his mistress and his family. Prem chooses Rupali and moves in with her, leaving his children and mother behind with Pooja. Pooja sends her mother-in-law and children to live with her husband and Rupali. They intentionally trouble Rupali and convince Prem that Rupali keeps them hungry and wants to poison and kill them. When Rupali tries to discipline the kids, it forces Prem to stop her and see her in a negative light. The trio also pretend that Rupali is making them do housework like slaves. Then they pretend as if Rupali has thrown them out of the house. Prem forces Rupali to apologize to his mom and kids. Prem then hits Rupali when his mom tells him that Rupali gave her poison pills for a headache. Prem is not willing to listen to Rupali's side of the story. Pooja, meanwhile, with the help of Prem's friend Lakhan, has a make-over, becoming a modern woman and taking on modeling assignments. She is the 51% stakeholder of Prem's modeling agency. Pooja takes operational control of the agency and cuts off Prem's source of funds that he uses to splurge on Rupali. Pooja also fires Rupali from the agency. Ultimately the relationship between Prem and Rupali breaks down. In the end, Prem realizes that Rupali only came to him since he gave her material things, while his wife stuck with him through thick and thin. Rupali realizes her mistake and gets back together with her ex-boyfriend, Deepak (Saif Ali Khan). This was designed by Pooja and Lakhan who contact Deepak and make him contact Rupali. In a twist, Lakhan befriends Rupali, affectionately calling her his sister. While hugging her, his wife Lovely (Tabu) walks upon them and misunderstands the situation. She leaves the house crying, and drives away in a car, which their son has tampered with and has managed to disable the brakes. Lakhan then chases after her and makes up with her, with Lakhan saying to Lovely that she is his "Biwi no. 1."

Two friends, both with the name of Lingam, create a comedy of errors and consequent chaos with their girlfriends and their families.

After completing his studies in London, Shakti Thakur returns to his ancestral village in India, accompanied by his girlfriend, Anita, whom he is in love with and wants to marry, much to the disapproval of his family. Shakti harbors ambitions of opening a chain of fast-food restaurants, a vision that contrasts sharply with his family's traditional values and expectations. Back in the village, Shakti quickly becomes disillusioned by the stagnant atmosphere and the deep-rooted animosity that still plagues the townspeople. He informs his father, the zamindar Raja Thakur, that he intends to sell his share of the family's property to fund his business venture. Raja Thakur, who raised Shakti as a single parent after his mother died when Shakti was just a year old, pleads with his son to stay in the village and use his education for the betterment of the community. He emphasizes that "a man gets an education not to become a selfish being but to uplift his uneducated brothers and society." However, Shakti, frustrated by the ongoing feud between his father and his uncle, Zamindar Birju, and the behavior of his older brother, a perpetual drunk and an embarrassment to the family, decides to leave. The village is deeply affected by the longstanding feud between Raja Thakur and his younger brother Birju, a disabled man whose son, Bali Thakur, holds a deep grudge against Raja Thakur. This rivalry, fueled by Bali Thakur's desire to one-up his uncle, keeps the village divided and stifles its progress. While spending time in the village, Shakti engages in a game of sticks (a traditional Indian sport) with Bali Thakur's men, which he wins, further aggravating the tension between the two factions. During a visit to an old temple that had been closed off due to a longstanding dispute between Raja Thakur and Birju Thakur over who had rights to it, Shakti insists on entering, and his friend and servant Sukhiya breaks open the lock. Bali Thakur hears of this and incites a brutal riot between the two village factions. Raja Thakur, desperate to prevent further bloodshed, considers apologizing, but Shakti insists that he or Sukhiya should apologize instead. However, when Shakti looks for Sukhiya, he learns that Bali Thakur's men have cut off Sukhiya's hand as punishment for opening the temple, leading Raja Thakur's men to retaliate by burning down the homes of Bali Thakur's supporters. Frustrated by the lack of justice after Sukhiya's arm is cut off, Shakti confronts the head police officer about why they are not taking action. The officer explains that the villagers refuse to come forward as witnesses to such violent acts, making it difficult for the police to intervene. Despite this setback, the police officer becomes supportive of Shakti. To prevent the situation from escalating further, Shakti enlists the help of a government official friend to legally open the temple for all, with his father's reluctant approval. Offended by this move, Bali Thakur retaliates by hiring goons to destroy a dam that protects Raja Thakur's side of the village. A female villager notices the goons near the dam but does not think much of it at the time. The dam is subsequently destroyed with explosives, leading to a devastating flood that kills many villagers, including infants, leaving Shakti deeply grieved The same female villager, whose son died in the flood, angrily recognizes one of the goons in the village. She confronts him, leading Shakti to capture the goon and hand him over to the police. However, the goon, out of fear for his family's safety, refuses to implicate Bali Thakur in the crime. Later, Bali Thakur intimidates Narayan, a villager living in Raja Thakur's area, into closing off a portion of his land, making it difficult for the public to reach the main road. This action was done at the suggestion of Bali's lawyer, further complicating the ongoing conflict. In a village panchayat called to resolve the issue, accusations fly from both sides. Without any evidence, Bali Thakur accuses Raja Thakur of orchestrating attacks on his brother's family and insults him relentlessly. Disrespected and heartbroken, Raja Thakur returns home and dies from a heart attack that night. During the funeral, Birju Thakur grieves the death of his brother, while Bali Thakur reacts with cold indifference and annoyance. Shakti, now burdened with the role of the village head, reluctantly takes on his father's duties. After becoming the village head, Shakti makes his older brother swear to stop drinking, and his brother agrees. However, Bali Thakur's men, under the influence of Bali's lawyer, try to get Shakti's brother drunk again to manipulate him into signing away the village's property deed, but Shakti intervenes just in time to prevent the betrayal. As time passes, the villagers express concerns about the land that has been closed off, leading to longer travel times. Shakti successfully convinces Narayan to open the land by arranging a marriage between Narayan's daughter, Gehna, and a well-to-do man from the village and the police agree to provide protection to stop Bali men interfering. However, on the wedding day, the groom flees in fear of Bali Thakur. Distraught and feeling dishonored, Narayan believes his daughter will be stigmatized and live in constant fear. Shakti steps in and marries Gehna himself, despite still having feelings for Anita. Although their marriage begins awkwardly, Shakti and Gehna gradually move on. When Anita returns and learns the truth, she is left heartbroken. Although saddened by the turn of events, she understands the situation and leaves. Shakti, too, closes the chapter about his girlfriend and starts his new life with his wife Bali Thakur, enraged by the series of events-including the opening of the land, Shakti stopping him from tricking his older brother into signing over the family land, and the village panchayat's decision to honor Shakti's family with the right to host the village festival for reopening the temple-plots a final act of vengeance. Despite Shakti's kind offer to let Bali oversee the festival, Bali refuses, threatening to cut off Shakti's head, further escalating tensions. Bali then devises a plan to plant a bomb at the festival, determined to exact revenge. Bali's parents, Birju and his mother, become aware of his plot and, horrified, try to stop him. They attempt to call the police, but Bali, in his blind rage, imprisons them. Birju pleads with his son to end the violence, but his pleas fall on deaf ears. Bali's mother manages to escape and runs to the festival to warn Shakti of the bomb, but she arrives too late, and the bomb explodes, resulting in multiple deaths. In the aftermath of the explosion, a furious Shakti searches for Bali at his home. He finds a devastated and remorseful Birju, who does not know where Bali is hiding but Birju does not know, Shakti decides to help Birju and his innocent family by bringing them to his home, however both factions of the village, wanting revenge, go after Bali Thakur and his family. Shakti protects the innocent family and convinces the villagers to leave. Appreciative of Shakti's efforts to protect them, Birju Thakur finally ends his enmity towards him. Meanwhile, the police launch a manhunt for Bali in connection with the bombing. The next day, Shakti notices Bali's mother walking into the chicken coop area on his property and realizes that Bali is hiding there. Shakti follows her and confronts Bali, who is hiding inside. Bali's mother begs him to flee and escape the consequences of his actions, but Bali, consumed by his hatred for Shakti, refuses. When his mother tries to stop him from attacking Shakti, Bali spits in her face and kicks her in the stomach. Enraged by this, Shakti attacks and overpowers Bali, but ultimately spares his life, urging him to surrender to the police. However, Bali refuses to give up his vendetta and tries to attack Shakti again. He flees to an area filled with statues and idols, where the two engage in a final, intense battle with weapons. In the struggle, Shakti decapitates Bali with an axe, an act that leaves him devastated as he realizes that Bali has forced him to unleash his dark side. Although other villagers are willing to take the blame for Bali Thakur's murder, Shakti gives himself up to the police to end the cycle of violence once and for all. The film depicts the true meaning of education as "a tool to uplift uneducated people".

Revolving around Senapathy (Kamal Hasan), an ardent freedom fighter, and set in the time of the freedom struggle (partially), Indian is the story of how hysterically sad it can be for a revolutionary patriot to find that the country for whose freedom he fought is so much different from what he had hoped for it to become. Senapathy, a live witness and sufferer of the rampant corruption prevailing in our system - to which he loses his daughter - decides against being a muted spectator. A man disguises himself as a nanny to be with his daughter after his divorce. The film starts in a court where the divorce case was going and Janaki(Meena) was fighting for divorce from Pandian(Kamal) as she feels that she could continue her marriage life as she was not able to come to terms with living in a small house with no amenities and also Kamal is not able to spend much of the time with her as he runs a Dance school and also a choreographer in film industry. Finally Meena wins the case as the court agrees to give divorce. According to this verdict Pandian can meet her daughter Bharathi every Friday and that too in a public Place. So Pandian meets her daughter every Friday in a temple. But Bharathi wants to live with her father rather than mother. After some days Pandian sees and advertisement in a newspaper that Vishwanathan Iyer was in search of a servant maid who can also takes care of his granddaughter. After seeing this advertisement she calls him and speaks in a lady voice and when Vishwanathan Iyer asks for her name he first struggles and later he sees the street name as Avvai Shanmugan Street and says his name as Avvai Shanmugi. Then he goes to Nagesh and asks for his help. Nagesh accepted his offer for 20,000 rupees and he assured him that he could change him as old lady with the help of his Make up techniques. For this Pandian sells his bike and gives the money to him but still there is a shortage of money. Finally Pandian becomes Avvai Shanmugi and he goes for the interview in a Ladies bus, but Nagesh says that he make up stays only for 5 hours. Then he (Pandian as Avvai Shanmugi) goes to the house for the interview, where he finds that interview was already over and they asked all theothers to leave. During that time Bharathi, Pandian's daughter, meets with an accdient due fire as she was burning crackers and seeing this Pandian saves her. Watching these activities of Pandian,Vishwanathan Iyer immediately appoints Avvai Shanmugi. There Avvai Shanmugi was recognized by Bharathi and she finds and says that it was not Shanmugi but his father. Then lot of activities takes place there and Avvai Shanmugi and his daughter finds and shows Vishwanathan Iyer the different types of theft going on in the house with the help of Senthurama Iyer and the cook. As Avvai Shanumi resembles the wife of Vishwanathan Iyer, Vishwanathan Iyer(Gemini Ganesh) falls in love with Avvai Shanmugi and to escape from this situation Avvai Shanmugi says that she was already married and her husband left her to Kasi. To find the truth Sethuraman Iyer follows her and he gets caught with Muthaliyar(Manivannan), who was also in love with Avvai Shanmugi. Seeing this he beats Sethuraman Iyer and by this time Avvai Shanmugi now comes as Pandian and he rescues Sethuraman Iyer and says to mudhaliar that Sethuraman Iyer was the husband of Avvai Shanmugi. Pandian says a different story to Sethuraman Iyer that Mudhaliyar was the husband of Avvai Shanmugi. Similary when all the members of Vishwanathan Iyer goes to a jwellery shop, Joseph comes there and he was asking money from Avvai Shanmigi. Watching this Vishwanathan Iyer questions Shanmugi who it was and she says thet it was her husband so she could escape from the situation. So Vishwanathan Iyer says that he will give money so that he should leave Avvai Shanmugi and Joseph who was money oriented accepts the offer and during this time Sethuraman Iyer comes in and says he isn't the husband but Mudhaliyar was the husband of Avvai Shanmugi, but Joseph somehow manages the situation. Nassar(Bhai) who was the friend of Pandian was working in a tea stall and seeing this Kamal says him to go and meet Avvai Shanmugi in Vishwanathan Iyer house and him to go as dumb and as a Brahmin. He also joins in the job but he was caught by sethuraman Iyer and they came to know thet he was a Muslim and he can also speak. However Avvai Shanmugi saves Bhai. At some point of time Avvai Shanmugi hints to Vishwanthan Iyer that Janaki's rightful place is by her husband, Pandian and Vishwananthan Iyer also realises this and tells Janaki that she has no place in his house. So this made Meena very angry and she attempts suicide, but Avvai Shanmugi(Pandian) stops her and finally reveals that he was Pandian who came as Avvai Shanmugi to Janaki's hous to look after his daughter.Finally Janaki and Pandian understand the mistake made by them and they live happily.

The film was launched by C. V. Sridhar in 1980 as a Cinemascope venture and was then titled as Sakthi. Sridhar collaborated with Kamal Haasan after the success of the 1978 film Ilamai Oonjal Aadukirathu, which had also featured Rajinikanth. The film was meant to be the first film which featured Kamal Haasan and Ambika as a lead pair and stills were released featuring Ambika in a swimsuit. The film got delayed and was put on the back burner, before it re-emerged in 1986 under the title of Meendum Suryodayam and shooting progressed. It was planned for an April 1986 release, which got postponed to 1 May 1986.There was a local authority election in March 1986 and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won seats. Sridhar felt that if the film released with the title Meendum Suryodayam (Rising Sun), it would be seen as if they are welcoming the DMK's re-emergence, whose symbol was that of a rising sun. Hence the title was changed to Naanum Oru Thozhilali. Sridhar had previously started a film with the same title in the mid-1970s, with M. G. Ramachandran in the lead; that film was shelved

Ravi does not like that Kamla speaks disparagingly about his parents, and for taunting his death father for wasting his life by marrying his commoner mother. Ravi sees Mona swimming naked in the early morning sun on the beach and goes nuts. One day Vikram decides to drive his boat right through the local fishermen's nets that were deployed in the ocean, damaging them substantially. Raja is a witness and asks Vikram for compensation at his office. Vikram refuses, but Ravi intervenes and agrees to pay, as he has sympathy for the poor. Ravi starts pursuing Mona, and even serenades her. Mona and Ravi fall in love of which Raja knows nothing. Meanwhile Vikram advises Kamla to drop their fish prices in the market. This would force the poor fishermen to match their prices, which they cannot afford as they need to pay interest on their borrowings. This pricing move would wipe out all the poor fishermen of the area and allow Kamla to corner the entire market. Kamla approves the pricing move. The fishermen led by Raja contemplate their next move, but Ravi reaches out to Raja and befriends him, by drinking with him at a local bar. The friendship between Ravi and Raja grows. Ravi wants to marry Mona, but hesitates to ask her dad, so he decides to ask Raja to represent him. But before Ravi can ask, Raja tells Ravi how much he loves Mona, but hasn't had the courage to tell her. Ravi is heartbroken, and decides to step back from Mona. when Ravi finds that Raja is waiting to buy his own boats before he proposes to Mona, he arranges for a family friend to give Raja a business investment (without Raja ever realizing that the investment came from Ravi). Ravi writes a letter to Mona, and tells her that he is going away. They meet for one last time, and Ravi tells Mona that Raja loves her. Meanwhile Raja is ecstatic that he now has a business investment to buy his own boats. He prepares to propose to Mona. He rushes to Mona, only to find Mona and Ravi in a deep embrace. Raja is heartbroken and spends the whole night alone and drinking. Miss Joseph finds out about Raja's heartbreak. The next day Mona approaches Raja and says that she loves Ravi. And Ravi wont even talk to her, unless Raja fixes things between them, as he does not want to come between Mona and Raja. She categorically says that Raja is a great friend to her, but nothing more. To placate Mona, Raja pretends that all of this was only a ruse to get Ravi and Mona to profess their love for each other publicly. Raja then helps reunite Ravi with Mona. Post this Raja leaves with Miss Jospeh to visit her sister. Vikram tells Kamla about Ravi's affair with Mona. Ravi's grandmother, Kamladevi, is opposed to their love because of class differences. Ravi brings Mona to meet Kamla, but she was away on business trip. Ravi gives a holiday to all servants and proceeds to have some frolic with Mona. But Vikram finds out and tells Kamla that Ravi is alone at her bungalow with Mona. Kamla returns to the house and forces Mona to leave without meeting her properly. Kamla refuses to meet Mona formally, but tells Ravi to send Mr D'Silva to meet her. Kamla insults D'Silva over his and his daughter's status, and throws D'Silva out of her house. D'Silva has an heart attack after he is beaten up by Kamla's goons. When Kamla refuses to apologize to the D'Silva family, Ravi leaves her. Ravi goes to meet D'Silva, but is beaten up by the villagers and thrown outside the village. Kamla asks Vikram to buy the loans of the entire village. Kamla then sends the police with court orders to seize the boats of the entire village. The villagers send Mona to beg Kamla to relent. Kamla offers her a choice between Ravi and the welfare of the entire village. Kamla orders Mona to marry someone else within 7 days. Ravi threatens Kamla that if Mona gets married, he will commit suicide. Meanwhile Raja returns from his trip, & D'Silva asks Raja to marry Mona. Raja decides to help Mona and Ravi. Ravi finds out that Raja really loved Mona and that he sacrificed his own love for the sake of his friendship with Ravi. Ravi is shocked. Meanwhile Kamla decides that she cannot afford to lose Ravi and tells Vikram to get him back, by telling him that she is ready to accept all of his demands. Vikram decides to kill Ravi. Vikram abducts Mona and forces Ravi to surrender. He wants Ravi to commit suicide, but Raja intervenes and attacks Vikram's goons. Raja defeats the goons and asks Ravi and Mona to leave town asap. Ravi refuses to take Mona with him, as he knows that Raja loves Mona. But then Vikram gets up and shoots at Ravi. Raja sees this and comes in between, taking the bullets on himself. Ravi kills Vikram, but Raja dies. Kamla accepts Ravi and Mona.

A rich graduate from high society returns from abroad after his father's death; soon after his return, he learns that his property is in jeopardy and must fight to keep it. Gopi is an unemployed graduate from a middle class society and Vinod is a rich graduate from high society returning from abroad after his father's death. In order to claim the property of Vinod, the estate manager with his mob guys assaults him and make him a drug addict by repeated injections administered by a fake doctor. Gopi's lover Padmini's father, a family friend of Vinod's father, together with Padmini, come to the estate on an excursion. Due to her curiosity, she sees Vinod and finds out that he is in a dangerous state of health due to the drug addiction. Padmini later learns that Gopi and Vinod are twins separated at birth. With the help of the house's servant, Padmini replaces Vinod with Gopi and sends him to his mother's house to save him. Gopi takes it upon himself to save the estate and properties from the hands of Vinuchakravarthy and his accomplice.

Bhagyalakshmi (Sridevi) has a car accident while returning from a party and is hospitalised with severe head injuries. When she recovers, she is diagnosed with retrograde amnesia and she fails to recognise her own parents. She mentally regresses to the state of a child. While she is undergoing treatment, she is kidnapped and sold to the madam (Ganthimathi) of a brothel. Srinivas, also known as Cheenu, (Kamal Haasan) comes to Chennai to meet his old friend (Y. G. Mahendra). Together, they visit the brothel to relax. The madam sends Bhagyalakshmi, renamed Vijaya, to his room. Cheenu realises that she is mentally still a child and pities her. He learns that she is from a cultured family, and that she was kidnapped and forced into prostitution. He returns the next day and, after paying a huge sum to the madam, takes Vijaya out, supposedly on a pleasure trip. He takes her away to Ketti, where he is working as a school teacher. He takes her to his residence, where he protects her and also pampers her like a child. Viji, as she is called by Cheenu, has completely forgotten her past and becomes very close to him. When Viji accidentally spills ink over Cheenu's documents, angering him, their relationship is threatened, but they reconcile. Later, a local woodcutter named Nataraj (Nataraj) lusts for Viji and nearly assaults her, but she manages to save herself. When she tells Cheenu about it, he becomes livid with rage and almost kills Nataraj, but is stopped by his neighbours who were informed of the incident by Viji. Meanwhile, the wife (Silk Smitha) of Cheenu's boss is attracted to Cheenu, though he does not reciprocate her feelings. Viji's father Vedachalam (S. R. Veeraraghavan), who was searching her through the police, releases a newspaper advertisement about his lost daughter. A co-passenger who had travelled with Cheenu and Viji from Chennai to Ooty by train gives them a lead. Cheenu takes Viji to an Ayurvedic medical practitioner (Ramanamurthy) and leaves her there for treatment for a day. In his absence, the police come to his house searching for Viji. Finally, the police learn that Viji is getting treated at the doctor's place and reach there. Cheenu is unable to come as he is afraid of police action. The treatment goes through successfully. Viji regains her memory and completely forgets about the period between her accident and recovery. Vedachalam and his wife are happy and decide to leave. From the doctor, Vedachalam learns that the person who had brought her there had been taking good care of their daughter; he withdraws his police complaint and they begin their journey to Chennai with Viji. After the police leave, Cheenu comes running after the car in which Viji is travelling. He follows them to the railway station and tries to gain the attention of Viji, but she is unable to recognise him. Cheenu acts like a dancing monkey that Viji developed a liking for, but Viji, unable to comprehend, thinks that he is insane and begging for food. Cheenu continues his futile attempts to gain her attention, and the train eventually leaves with Viji not recognising him. Cheenu, who was hurt while chasing her car and trying to get her attention, is left alone, heartbroken.

He resigns his job after his boss scolds him and he returns to home in Goa. His orthodox Tamilian father V. Sivaramakrishnan (Poornam Vishwanathan) is always at loggerheads with the Hindi-speaking neighbor family. His mom Vandana (Athili Lakshmi). Jagannath (Satyen Kappu) is Siva's good friend (& owner of the house) and frequently comes to their house. Siva is angry with Vasu as he came home after quitting his well paying job. The family has a beautiful daughter named Sapna, a college student. Her father Kundanlal (Arvind Deshpande) and his wife (Shubha Khote) While being stalked by a perverted librarian (Sunil Thapa) on a lonely road, Sapna finds Vasu jogging and starts a conversation with him. Seeing this, the librarian goes away. Sapna thanks Vasu for pretending to be her friend, but he reveals that he doesn't understand Hindi. Vasu wants to make friends with her, but he unfortunately meets an accident and is admitted at the hospital. A shocked and sad Sapna sends him a gift- a mask with her name behind it. Despite the nasty fights between their families, Vasu and Sapna fall madly in love with each other. They get to know each other, experiencing the joy and innocence of first love. One day however, Sapna misunderstands Vasu (when he tries to kiss her on a lonely beach, without her permission) that he too is just lustful and does not love her truly, and she breaks up with him. Despite Vasu's efforts to make her understand his love, Sapna ignores him and is still angry. A week later, Sapna finds Vasu awake all night looking at her window hoping that she would forgive him. Heartbroken at seeing him like that, Sapna forgives him and signals him by turning her room light off and on repeatedly. They meet the next day and Sapna expresses her love for Vasu by kissing his hand. The lovers unite and they go around the beaches, forts, waterfalls and scenic places of Goa. While returning home late night, Vasu's bike runs out of petrol. So they pose as a newly married couple and ask for a lift in a cab. But to their shock, Sapna's father is in the car and he takes her home immediately! Vasu and Sapna keep meeting each other and fall in love even more. One day when Sapna returns from college after meeting Vasu, she finds the perverted librarian at her home. The man has secretly clicked pictures of her and Vasu together and shows it to her parents. Burning with rage, Sapna's mother forbids her from seeing Vasu and accompanies her everywhere she goes. Heartbroken, Vasu makes a plan and stealthily meets Sapna during her college lunch break. They go to a hotel for lunch and Vasu stops the lift halfway to spend sometime with Sapna. He sings a song for her using the broken Hindi he knows and they get carried away. This leads to a huge crowding at the hotel lift and someone calls the police! Vasu and Sapna's families are informed about this and they are mad with rage! Sapna is locked at home and Vasu's father scolds him very badly. Despite the opposition, Vasu boldly goes and meets Sapna in her home in the presence of her parents and expresses his love for her by kissing her on the lips. Sapna's mother screams and calls everyone claiming that Vasu is ruining their family honor. Finally, both the families meet and Vasu and Sapna clearly affirm their love for each other. Their families agree to get them married on one condition-that they should separate from each other for one year without any kind of contact. After such a period, if they still want to be together, they can get married. During the year there should be no contact between them whatsoever. Vasu and Sapna reluctantly agree to the contract hoping that they can finally get married after one year. Vasu goes to Hyderabad for a job, while Sapna stays back in Goa. During their year of separation, Vasu writes a letter every day to Sapna, in which he expressed his pain and feelings, but doesn't send it to her because of the contract. He learns to speak Hindi fluently from a young widow named Sandhya (Madhavi), to make Sapna's parents happy. And to drown his pain of separation, he also learns dance from Sandhya. On the other hand, Sapna visits all the places where she and Vasu used to go. Each time she walks past those places, all their memories come alive. She also visits a rocky hill by the beach, where their names 'Vasu' and 'Sapna' are painted on the highest rock. In order to make Sapna forget Vasu, her mother destroys the audio tape that he had given her. She also burns Vasu's only photo that Sapna had. In response, Sapna writes Vasu's name all over her bedroom wall, making her family even more angry. Sapna goes on a college trip to Mangalore, where her mother sends her relative Chakram (Rakesh Bedi) (whom she had called from Lucknow to woo Sapna and get her to forget Vasu) to spy on her. Chakram wants to marry Sapna, but she doesn't like him. Coincidentally, Vasu also comes to Mangalore due to a job assignment. He spots Sapna and follows her to her hotel room, but bumps into Chakram, who lies that he and Sapna are married! A shocked Vasu meets Sapna's college friends and asks about her, but they also tell that Chakram and Sapna are soon to be married. Vasu is heartbroken and proposes to Sandhya. She readily accepts and their wedding is fixed. The librarian meets Vasu in Hyderabad (he was attending a book fair) and learns Vasu is engaged to Sandhya. He goes to Goa and relates the incident to Sapna and her parents. When coming to meet him, she finds all the letters he wrote to Sapna, and discovers the truth. Sandhya goes to Goa and meets Sapna and finds that she is not married and is waiting for Vasu. Seeing their true love, Sandhya sacrifices her love and decides to unite Vasu and Sapna She tells the truth to Vasu and cancels their wedding, urging him to go and meet his beloved Sapna as their one-year contract was getting over. Sandhya's older brother Beni hears that the wedding is canceled and thinks that Vasu cheated his sister. In a drunken state, he phones his criminal friend in Goa and asks him to 'completely get rid' of Vasu! Sandhya gets to know that Beni has issued the order to kill Vasu. She confronts Beni, who admits that he was intoxicated. But the Goa criminal contact has already left. Sandhya calls Sapna's mother, since Vasu's house did not have a phone. Sapna's mom promises to give the message that Vasu is in danger, but then decides to keep the news to herself. Vasu reaches home, but Sapna is at the beach. The librarian follows Sapna to the beach and wants to sexually assault her for all the insults over the months meted out to him. Meanwhile Vasu reaches the beach and is confronted by Beni's criminal friend and his gang. The librarian sexually assaults Sapna brutally and runs away on his bike. Meanwhile the gang is about to stab Vasu, but run away after hearing the librarian's bike. Sapna and Vasu unite, but both are badly injured. They relate each other's tale and fall off the cliff in a tight embrace.. They are killed on impact.

After his father's death, he conveys this information to the cook, who tells him he will go to Madras and bring his relatives home. One day the entire gang is in a room, laughing at how they had duped Kalyana and will steal everything. He overhears, and runs to tell the police. She becomes pregnant, but Venkatachalam refuses to marry her. Kasi, who is secretly in love with Thilagam, claims Sanjeevi is her baby's father, which means he is sentenced to marry Shobha. Sanjeevi is enraged at his position, but goes ahead after Kasi pleads with him to save Thilagam from social disgrace. Sanjeevi sends Thilagam to live with Kasi till her pregnancy is over. Kasi tenderly looks after her, and when his community starts to inquire about her presence in his home, he tells them she is his wife to protect her (back in 1978 unwed motherhood was considered a disgrace in India). Eventually Indumathi learns the truth about her brothers guilt and Sanjeevi's innocence, and flies into a rage and demands Venkatachalam marry Thilagam for the dignity of womanhood. Venkatachalam is finally persuaded to marry Thilagam, and comes to see her after her baby is born. However Thilagam rejects him, as all he did was get her pregnant and afterwards he never even came around to see her; Kasi on the other hand not only stayed with her but cared for her, and she considers him a more worthy choice as a husband and father. An enraged Venkatachalam fires them both, but Sanjeevi approves of Thilagam's choice and sets up a job for Kasi to support his now-wife and child. The film ends with Sanjeevi leaving town, picking up Indumathi on the outskirts after she asks him to take her along.

Her life takes a turn for the better in Chennai with a very supportive friend-group in her office, particularly a widower, Janardhan a.k.a Johnnie (Kamal Hassan)who is a talented ventriloquist talking through his puppet, Junior. He falls in love with Anu, but is unable to muster up the courage to tell her about it. In an interesting cinematic twist, her ex-husband's mother discovers her presence in the city and takes up a job as a maid in her house. Anu also stumbles upon her old lover in Chennai and discovers that her letters to him never reached as they were intercepted by his mentally-challenged sister. Soon, Anu renews her relationship with her old love and life seems to be looking up for her. But the ghosts of the past continue to haunt her. Ramanathan comes to Chennai in the role of her boss - a contrite and repentant Ramanathan, who now wants to re-marry Anu and redress the wrongs he had done. The film opens with an Independence Day celebrations organised by the Sub-Collector (Janardanan) of the area and the participation of various tribal groups of the region. Ponni (Lakshmi) belonging to the Mudhuga tribe and Maran (Kamal Haasan) belonging to the Irula tribe who danced on the day are introduced to each other by the Sub-Collector. Ponni and Maran fall in love at the first sight even as they willingly pose for the media. These two tribes are rivals, who follow separate faiths and traditions. The Independence Day photograph of Ponni and Maran are published in the newspapers next day. Chellan (Soman), a Mudhuga, is in love with Ponni, but she dislikes him. Ponni's friend Maashi (Rajakumari) loves Chellan. Tension and strained relations in the Mudhuga tribes is cleverly exploited by the landlords of the area. The tribals practice the 'slash-and-burn' cultivation method, which is resented by the landlords who needed the tribals as cheap labour. Ponni revolts against the attempts of the landlords to hamper their traditional agricultural activities. Maran also stands by Ponni. The Ponni-Maran love affair is met with widespread animosity and opposition. News is spread that the mountain god and the powers of Nature will not be pleased with the inter-tribe relationship. Hanuman (Paravur Bharathan), an tool in the hands of the landlords. He works for them against the tribals. The tribal chief (Muthukulam Raghavan Pillai) warns the Mudhugas that their settlement will be destroyed by natural calamities if Ponni marries Maran and she is banned from meeting Maran. Meanwhile, Ponni's father Nanjan (Sankaradi) decides to marry her to Chellan. The police arrest Maran on false charges of holding firearms without a licence. Ponni meets the Sub-Collector and pleads with him to save Maran and manages to get him freed. The Mudhuga priest Bomman (Adoor Bhasi), through the influence of the landlords and Hanuman, set a trap to kill Ponni. And Bomman makes a prediction that the tribal settlement will soon be destroyed by the anger of Jakkamma, the mountain goddess. Pretending to be possessed by the goddess, Bomman demands human sacrifice to appease the powers and save the tribe. Ponni is chosen for the sacrifice and arrangements are made for the ritual. Maran and Chellan reach the spot in time and save Ponni. The film draws to a happy ending, Maran and Chellan marrying Ponni and Maashi respectively.

When a Brahmin family finds diminishing monetary opportunities in traditional priestly functions, the daughter must go out and work. Lalitha, the eldest daughter of a Brahmin family, is saddled with the responsibility of supporting her family, led by a father who witlessly procreates to a robust size of 10 household members. As poverty gets worse, Lalitha must turn to desperate measures to keep the food coming. Interesting comment on gender, tradition, and the caste crisis, slightly bold for its time. Lalitha's doctor-wannabe kid-brother also figures in the story.

Believing his wife to be dead, a soldier with the British-Indian army marries another woman and moves on. But what happens when he discovers that his wife is actually alive? Balu (Sivaji Ganesan) and Velu (Gemini Ganesan) work in British Indian Air Force and are fighting with allied forces in World War II. Their plane crashes due to bombs dropped by Japanese. Velu is grievously injured. Balu carries him 50 miles to a village in Assam. There Velu regains consciousness and his health starts improving under the care of Indroma(Savithri) and her father, in whose house they are staying. Japanese soldiers come in search of these two. Balu hides Velu and when Japanese are about to discover Velu, he gives himself up to save Velu. Velu recovers, and marries Indroma, teaches her Tamil and calls her Indra. velu is found my members of British Indian army the day after his wedding and has to leave with them, leaving his wife behind. Indra is pregnant and gives birth to a child, however, their village is bombed and she loses her eyesight. When Velu comes in search of his wife, he only sees the ruins of the former village and grieves thinking his wife is dead and goes to Chennai to his maternal uncle. After 5 years, Balu, who had joined Indian National Army under Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose when Bose had come to Japan, is acquitted in a court and released in Delhi. There, in a refugee camp, he sees a blind Indra and her son and comes to know that Indra's father had just died. He promises Indra that he will help her find Velu and unite them. So, Balu takes Indra and her son and travels to Chennai. Indra's son starts calling Balu as appa in spite of Indra telling him not to. They find a place to stay in Chennai and the house owner promises Balu that he will help him get a job in his company. On going to his house owners office, Balu sees that the owner of that company is Velu. He gets very happy and goes to Velus's house,only to see that Velu has married his Maternal uncle's daughter Janaki(Sowcar Janaki), who has heart problems and has a son also. Also, Balu also comes to know that Velu thinks that Indra is dead. Balu does not tell him the truth fearing Janaki would not be alive on knowing the truth. Velu gives Balu a very high position in his company. Janaki's sister Saro( Saroja Devi) falls in love with Balu and Balu also reciprocates. Meanwhile, Velu sees Indra and her son in Balu's house and gets shocked. Balu then tells him the truth about Indra, her blindness and Velu's son and cautions him not to talk with her as it might cause both Janaki and Indra to die. Janaki comes to know that Balu has a son and Saro loves Balu. She thinks that Balu is a married person ashamed of his blind wife and hence trying to cheat her sister. She hates him and cautions Saro against him. Saro comes to Balu's house, sees Indra's son Babu, calling Balu as his father and thinks that Balu has cheated her. Indra, on hearing this comes to Velu's house to meet Saro and clear the confusion. Velu, however, on seeing his blind wife pleading for Balu's innocence cannot contain himself and tells the truth to everyone. Janaki on hearing that Indra is her husband's first wife, cannot take the shock and dies. She unites Balu and Saro before dying and apologizes to Balu for having suspected him and thanks him for all the sacrifices he has made for her husband and family.
