The Sheep Detectives
Every night a shepherd reads aloud a murder mystery, pretending his sheep can understand. When he is found dead, the sheep realize at once that it was a murder and think they know everything about how to go about solving it. In this witty, new breed of mystery, George (Hugh Jackman) is a shepherd who reads detective novels to his beloved sheep every night, assuming they can't possibly understand. But when a mysterious incident disrupts life on the farm, the sheep realize they must become the detectives. As they follow the clues and investigate human suspects, they prove that even sheep can be brilliant crime-solvers. George Hardy has spent years caring for his peaceful flock of sheep in the quiet English village of Denbrook. Every evening, after tending to the farm, he gathers his sheep together and reads detective novels aloud for his own enjoyment, believing the animals are simply comforted by the sound of his voice. Unknown to George, however, every member of the flock understands every word. Inspired by the mysteries they hear night after night, the sheep have developed remarkable reasoning skills and secretly discuss the stories among themselves once the humans have gone to bed. Life changes forever when George is discovered dead under suspicious circumstances. While the local police begin investigating what appears to be an ordinary murder, the sheep immediately recognize that something is terribly wrong. Having listened to countless detective stories, they become convinced that the clues point to a carefully planned crime rather than an accident. Determined to uncover the truth and honor the man who cared for them, the flock appoints themselves as detectives. Led by the intelligent Miss Maple, the practical Mopple, the endlessly logical Sebastian, and several other memorable sheep, the unlikely investigators begin carefully observing the humans around them. Unable to speak directly to people without revealing their extraordinary secret, the sheep must work together by silently gathering evidence, following suspicious individuals across fields and villages, and subtly guiding the human investigators toward important discoveries. As the mystery deepens, hidden rivalries, old family disputes, financial secrets, and long-forgotten betrayals begin surfacing throughout the community. Each suspect appears to have something to hide, making it increasingly difficult to determine who can be trusted. While the police overlook seemingly insignificant details, the sheep notice patterns that only they can recognize because of their unique perspective. George's estranged daughter Rebecca returns to the village after learning of her father's death. Struggling with guilt over the years she spent away, she attempts to settle his affairs while forming uneasy relationships with the villagers. Police officer Tim Derry also becomes increasingly determined to solve the case, though he frequently misinterprets evidence that the sheep have painstakingly uncovered. The flock repeatedly finds creative ways to influence the investigation without exposing their intelligence. Danger grows as the murderer realizes someone—or something—is getting closer to the truth. Several members of the flock narrowly escape traps intended to eliminate witnesses, forcing the sheep to become even more cautious. Their friendship, courage, and loyalty are repeatedly tested as they weigh the risks of continuing their investigation. Eventually, the clues gathered by both the sheep and the human investigators converge, exposing the true motive behind George's murder. Long-buried secrets come to light, revealing that the crime was driven by greed, resentment, and desperation rather than random violence. Through teamwork, careful observation, and the detective skills they unknowingly learned from George himself, the sheep help ensure justice is served. Although George is gone, his lessons continue to live on through the flock he loved.
